Blinded Chapter 38
What had she been thinking? Who plans a wedding in a month's time? That one month was now going onto month two. Thank goodness she'd asked Molly to help her otherwise the wedding would not be happening at all. Hermione had never wanted a huge wedding but things had quickly spiraled out of control and it was going to be much bigger than she'd thought of originally. Once Ginny had heard that Hermione had asked her mum to help plan things, her nose had gotten out of joint. She'd rushed in to help plan even though she'd just had her baby, it didn't matter because she wasn't going to be left out of the fun. Hermione shook her head at remembering that conversation. Ginny had said 'fun' and Hermione wanted to know what was so much fun about planning a wedding. It had been stressful and she hadn't a spare moment to think about anything but the wedding planning. When she and Draco had joked one night about just eloping, she wished now they'd gone ahead with the wild plan.
Right now, she, Ginny, and Molly were wandering around the bridal shop in Diagon Alley looking for the perfect wedding dress. This would be a lot easier if she wasn't pregnant and as far along as she was. It seemed like every day her stomach seemed to be growing. This was a good thing except for trying to find the perfect dress and one that would still fit her in four weeks when the wedding would take place. She knew she was exaggerating but that's how it felt. If time had permitted she would have had a dress custom made but that couldn't be done in a few months. She was left only with the option of finding a dress she liked and then altering it to fit.
"What about this one?" Ginny held up a dress that would look great on a very skinny person, not a woman whose belly expanded farther out than her breasts.
She tried to laugh at her or tell her why it wouldn't work but the words wouldn't come out. She stood with her mouth wide open staring at the small, clingy, mermaid style dress.
"Oh, close your mouth Hermione, I'm only joking. Don't you think I get the whole pregnant thing?" Ginny reached down and pinched her stomach that still made her look very pregnant. "I wish this thing disappeared once the baby popped out but it doesn't. It gets worse after each baby you have."
Hermione took a huge breath as she watched Ginny playing with her jiggling flab. Gods, that would be her after she had her baby. Looking down at her own stomach she knew that it would only get bigger as the months went by.
"But, look at what you get in return," Ginny leaned over the buggy where Lily lay sleepy quietly, her beautiful, deep auburn hair poking out of her bonnet. Her rosy cheeks next to porcelain skin made her look very much like her mum. "Can you believe I finally got a girl? Harry thought for sure that it would be another boy. Ha! We showed him didn't we Lily?" She leaned down to kiss the newborn on her delicate, little nose.
Hermione smiled, "Yes, she is worth it." Looking at the Potter baby made her place her hand over her stomach where her own baby was moving. It was exciting to feel the first tiny flutters of movement, that Ginny had compared to gas.
"Oh, Hermione, look at this dress." Molly was holding up a dress that finally made Hermione break out into a huge smile. Everything that they'd looked at up to this point had been too fancy for her tastes. She wanted something more simple but elegant.
Taking the dress from Molly's hands she hugged it to her chest and scurried off to the dressing room. Once she tried it on, she sighed and studied her figure in the mirror. The floor-length lace wedding gown was breathtakingly beautiful. The swathes of floral lace and sheer paneling gave the neckline and sleeves a soft look that accented her full breasts.
The classic vintage boat neck and elbow-length sleeves had lovely detailing that flattered yet flowed for a perfectly comfortable fit. The look was classic, figure forming, and frankly, she knew it would make Draco dumbfounded when he saw her walking down the aisle.
"Well, does it fit? Come on out and show us," Ginny yelled at her.
Hermione took one more look at herself in the mirror, smiled, and exited the dressing room. As she walked out onto the fitting room stage she heard both Weasley women gasp.
"Cor Blimey, that's the one," Ginny said with excitement her hands shooting into the air.
"I have to agree with you, Ginny. You look absolutely beautiful dear." Molly dabbed at her eyes as the tears started to flow down her face.
Hermione stood flabbergasted at the tears Molly was shedding.
"It's OK, Mione. She did the same thing when I finally found my wedding gown. That's a good sign that you need to buy this one."
"All I need now is a veil and shoes," she said with a giggle. She wondered how Draco and Scorpius were doing looking for wedding clothes the next street over. Hopefully, they were having as much luck as she was.
"I wanna go home. This isn't fun." Scorpius was squirming as his father was trying another set of dress robes on the small boy. "When can we go for some sweets? You promised me. I want some ice cream." The boy's wiggling was making it difficult to size the robes to his frame. With all of the arm flapping and stomping of his feet, it was taking ten times longer than it should.
Draco's patience was gone. Harry had accompanied him and Scorp to help them find dress robes while the women were with Hermione to find a wedding gown. He hoped that they were having an easier time than they were.
"Papa, you're not listening to me." Scorp stomped his foot again and looked like he was in tears. His red face contrasted with his normal porcelain skin.
Harry swooped in to lift the squirming boy in his arms. "Hey, Scorp, how about we make a deal? If you are patient and hold still so we can get you ready for the wedding, then not only will I take you for ice cream but we'll also go to Weasley's Wizard Wheezes to look at all of 'Harry Potter's' brothers and sisters. What do you say?"
Scorpius looked at Harry with big eyes and then turned towards his papa, "Can we really do that if I'm a good boy?"
Draco looked down at his young son, so like him in almost every way, including giving his parents a hard time as a child. He immediately calmed down when he thought back to the times when he didn't know if his son was alive or if he'd ever wake up from the curse. He needed to be a better father, just like Harry. That man had the patience of a saint, after all, patience is a virtue that would be good for him to practice.
"That would be fine with me son. Thank you, Harry." He nodded towards the man who he never thought he'd ever call a friend but that's who he was now.
Scorpius held so still he resembled a statue. It almost made Draco laugh, but he didn't want to give his son any extra attention when he was trying so hard to be good for ice cream.
The tailor finally finished with all three men and they were out the door. Scorpius skipped ahead of them singing and laughing, "Ice cream here we come. I bin good you get to come to my tummy now. I love ice cream yes, I do."
Harry couldn't hold it in anymore and bent over with laughter. Draco by this point had to join in with his friend, "Oh, I love kids." Harry said as he wiped the tears from his eyes from laughing so hard.
"I agree. I just wish I'd been more like this when I was his age." Draco sobered up quickly thinking back to his childhood and how he was raised in such a strict environment. "I think I would have been flogged by my father if I'd skipped down the street singing at the top of my lungs. Malfoys' don't sing in public. Malfoys' don't run in a public place." Draco mimicked his father sounding exactly like Lucius Malfoy.
"That was kind of scary," Harry said, "You sounded exactly like your father. I'm sorry your childhood stunk. Mine wasn't much better."
Draco looked over at Harry, "Why? What happened? I mean I know about your parents and things but what else?"
Harry looked down at his feet as they walked, trailing behind Scorpius who still was happily singing and smiling at everything around him. "My uncle and aunt hated me and didn't want me living there. In fact, I spent about ten years living in a cupboard under the stairs."
Draco stopped walking to stare at Harry, "What the hell? They made you live in a cupboard under the stairs? We treated our house elves better than that. They had their own rooms that they lived in. My mum made sure to treat them well since my father never did and she wanted them to do a good job in our home."
"In fact Malfoy, they used to lock me in that cupboard at night. I did all of the housework, cooking, and yard work for them. My fat cousin sat around watching the telly and playing with his many toys and friends. Their favorite pastime was to bully me. I didn't have any real friends until I came to Hogwarts." Harry finally looked at Draco who stood there open-mouthed in shock.
"So Ron and Hermione were your first friends?" Draco asked still staring at Harry in amazement. He'd had so many friends growing up like Theo, Vincent, Gregory, Pansy, Daphne, and Blaise. They played and studied together often since they'd all been homeschooled until Hogwarts. That's why they were all so close when they first got to school. All of a sudden he looked at Harry Potter with new eyes. He'd lived a hard life with an abusive family. When he finally got away from them to Hogwarts, he found out he had to save the magical world, and by the way, beware of the madman coming after you.
"Yes, they were and still are my best friends. I've made others since then but they will always be the most important to me." Harry gave a small grin and Draco nodded back to the man with understanding. He was glad that he finally knew this man better. He'd been so jealous of Harry all through school getting all of the attention when now he realized it had meant nothing to him.
"Look, Papa, it's the ice cream place with the big F," Scorpius broke the heavy conversation the two men had been having. They were getting ready to walk in when he heard someone calling his name.
"Draco, I had a feeling that you gents would be heading this way." Hermione walked up and glided into his arms giving him a long kiss. "I missed you."
"I missed you too. I bet the people with you weren't whining as much as what I had to hear back at the tailors." Draco said with a grimace.
"Harry, were you whining again?" Ginny walked up slapping him on the butt. "What did I tell you about causing a scene in public."
Harry grinned and grabbed his wife giving her a bigger and more longish kiss than what he'd seen seconds before with Draco and Hermione.
Molly Weasley came huffing and puffing down the street pushing Lily in her buggy, "My goodness you ladies walk fast. I could barely keep up with you two."
"I needed ice-cream mum," Ginny said laughing while Harry put his arms back around her.
"No, I need ice cream cause I was a good boy and held so still. Uncle Harry said he'd buy me ice cream if I did a good job." Scorp was tugging on Hermione's hand. "Come on Herminee! My tummy says it wants some sweets right now."
Scorp stopped for a moment and put his hands on her protruding belly and then pressed his face against her shirt, "Baby, do you want ice cream too?"
The adults tried hard not to laugh at the boy, Hermione had the hardest time not shaking with laughter. "What does the baby say Scorp?"
The small boy stepped back and looked up as serious as he could be, "It says it's very hungry for ice cream and needs it right now. So come on." He started tugging on her arm again towards the entrance.
Hermione turned back around to Draco, "I guess our children have spoken. Let's go." She walked inside with Scorp, both of them smiling at the prospect of eating something sweet.
Ginny pulled Harry along with her, "I think the Malfoy children have the right idea. Let's go, Potter."
Molly shook her head and tsked at her daughter, smiled, and walked in as Draco politely held the door for her and Lily.
Later that night after Scorpius had been fed real food, bathed, had storytime, and then tucked into bed, Draco and Hermione lay on the sofa. She was nestled in Draco's arms lying on her back and tucked under his chin. Draco's hands were drawing circles up and down Hermione's pregnant belly. She felt herself slowly drifting away to sleep, that is until Draco started talking and his words woke her immediately.
"Harry and I talked today," Draco said as he kept rubbing her belly waiting to feel the baby move. Now that the baby's movements could be felt by its father, he had a hard time keeping his hands off her ever-expanding belly.
"Well, it's about time you and Harry talked." She winked at him as Draco smirked back at her. "What did you talk about?" Hermione closed her eyes as she was close to falling asleep again while Draco caressed her stomach.
"Oh, we've talked before, you smartass. It's what we talked about that surprised me. We discussed our individual warped childhoods."
Hermione sat up turning around to look at Draco, "What did he tell you?" Her voice shook a little when she asked the question. What in Merlin's name had they talked about?
Draco figured that she already knew everything about Harry's childhood but he still wanted to talk about what he'd heard. It had been troubling him the rest of the afternoon and evening. He'd always hated Harry Potter for the fact alone that he was "The Great Harry Potter: Savior of the Wizarding World". Now that they were grown men and he'd gotten to know the real man, his eyes had been open to everything he'd gone through in his life.
Hermione was now turned around staring at him with almost terrified eyes. Was there something that she didn't want him to know about Harry? Why was she reacting this way?
He reached out to run his hand down the side of her face, which in turn calmed her enough that her shoulders settled down and the frightened look left her face. He started to explain how it had all started with them watching how carefree Scorpius was skipping and singing down the street in his excitement of finally getting his ice cream.
"As soon as Harry told me about his prison in the cupboard under the stairs, I felt foolish that I'd complained about my father's strictness growing up at Malfoy Manor in our perfect pureblood family," He noticed the fallen look on Hermione's face and the sadness displayed in her eyes. There seemed to be more to the story than what Harry had alluded to earlier.
"He was verbally abused and treated horribly by his aunt, uncle, and cousin. They should have been taken in by the authorities for child abuse and neglect." There was so much venom to her words, compared only to the likes of when she'd talked about the MacAteers in the past.
"I feel rather sorry for everything he went through. No kid should have to grow up surrounded by that. At least I had a very loving mum who counteracted my father's harshness." Draco had always wondered just how much of a bigger prat he would have been if it hadn't been for his mum's interventions at times. He probably would have been the same kind of father to Scorpius that Lucius had been to him. He almost shuddered at the thought.
"Don't ever say that you feel sorry for him though. I'm serious, he'll kick your butt or hate you even more than he did at Hogwarts. He doesn't want people to pity him." Hermione's lips pinched together. "Please tell me that you didn't do exactly that?"
"No. I just listened. Anyhow, Scorp and his urge for ice cream broke up our discussion about our terrible childhoods. You also happened to come along right then too." This made her smile, the tension leaving her.
"I'm glad that I did. I'm not saying you shouldn't ever talk to him about it but he's finally happy with his life. Harry doesn't want to dwell on his unhappy childhood. He has what he never had before; a family that loves him."
Hermione lay back down and snuggled close to Draco, her head resting on his chest. He, in turn, became silent as he got comfortable, head back against a fluffy pillow, enjoying holding his soon-to-be wife. He also was happy with his life. It was time for all of them to be happy. Soon the beautiful woman he was holding in his arms would be his wife, new mum to his son, a new child being born within the year, and he couldn't think of anything better than that.
OK, the real wedding is up in the next chapter. I hoped you enjoyed this more laid-back chapter of wedding preparations. There's not too much left with this story. EmmaW: to answer your PM, I can't say if anything bad will happen before the end or not. You will have to wait and see. I'm not saying yes or no, I'm just saying anything could be possible. Please also go read my other two WIP stories: Living and Playing With Granger. They are both very different! Thanks for reading.
