    Chapter 38: Slytherin’s Secret

The next day was one of the worst Harry had spent at the Castle. Although he did seem to say that a lot, today he really meant it. Seeing Ron acting like Colin Creevy and knowing who’d caused it but not being able to do anything about it, well that hurt. He’d numbed himself to Hermione’s fate, he needed to do so to function but he couldn’t do that with Ron, Ron hadn’t been in the dark lake for no reason. He had been up until now the thing Harry would miss the most. Now of course that title belonged to Draco but it didn’t mean that he thought any less of Ron, or Hermione.

It had been a hard day, not only for him but for several others. The other seventh year Gryffindors were terribly upset, they’d seen Ron slip away not long after they’d left the changing rooms the day before. They’d thought that he was doing something for Harry or he was sneaking off to meet up with Blaise. It seemed that Harry wasn’t the only one who wanted to see Ron and Blaise get together.

Unfortunately he wasn’t able to warn Blaise about Ron before the black haired boy met up with him. It was during break time that Harry felt the coin in his pocket heat up. When the DA had started up again they had altered the charms on the galleons to allow messages to be sent to Harry and a few other people if it was an emergency. With great trepidation Harry looked at his galleon and almost lost it, it was Draco…

He read the message over quickly, his feet already taking him somewhere in a hurry…Blaise!

Harry would have run to the dungeons if it wouldn’t have drawn too much attention, he knew Blaise wouldn’t want that. When he got there he was let into the Slytherin common room by Daphne. Luckily there was no one around who would question him, DA members were milling about and sitting restlessly in the chairs near the fire. They looked up at him and Harry wondered what could have happened to Blaise to make the Slytherins look that way. Blaise was popular in the dungeons, even more so since they knew he had switched sides and it was safe for them to do so as well.

He didn’t say anything he just headed through the door at the end to find the seventh year boys dorm.

Blaise was lying on his bed, clutching his pillow and…crying. Harry had never seen Blaise cry before. The Italian boy had always seemed too full of life, so hard to depress. He wasn’t sure he’d even seen Blaise frown before, or at least not when he could be himself and not the epitome of a Slytherin.

Draco was sitting on the edge of the bed trying to comfort his friend, he shot Harry a relieved look before turning his attention back to Blaise. Harry joined them and they spent some time trying to comfort the other boy.

Later in DADA, which he had arrived quite late for, he went over what had happened in his head. It seemed what they’d all wanted to happen had finally happened. Ron had gone to find Blaise after the match, hiding out somewhere near their changing rooms. When Blaise had appeared Ron had pulled him behind the building and asked him out. Blaise had of course accepted and that’s what he was so upset over now. At first he hadn’t realized what had happened and had been too shocked to figure it out, he hadn’t understood why Ron had acted the way he had.

Blaise had come across Ron in one of the corridors, probably just after double potions that morning. Seeing no one else about Blaise had risked a smile. Ron had of course flipped and had begun yelling and cursing at Blaise for all he was worth.

Blaise hadn’t told him exactly what Ron had said but whatever it was Ron had really hurt him. If he didn’t know that something was wrong with Ron he would have gone and punched his best friend’s lights out. He and Draco had only managed to calm Blaise down after Harry related to him the events of the previous night several times.

Only the fact that something must have happened to Ron calmed him and kept him so. Harry couldn’t blame Blaise for thinking that Ron had had a change of heart, after all they had only talked to each other for a short while. But now that he knew what was going on Blaise was angry and vengeful.

Not that he could blame Blaise for that either, he also wanted to make Dumbledore pay for this and everything else he had done to them. Did any of them matter? Not to that old man and Harry was sick of it. But he wasn’t ready yet. He wasn’t ready to do anything yet. Since the death of Tonks Voldemort had stepped up his game, instead of confining his attacks to the area around Hogsmeade and Hogwarts he attacked randomly. More and more families were disappearing, whether going into hiding or being taken, no one knew.

The outside world wasn’t safe anymore, it hadn’t been safe for a long time. But never before had Harry felt he and his friends could be safer out there than in Hogwarts. At least out there he knew what he was up against. In here he had no idea, how could he defend his mate and his friends if he didn’t know what was coming.

He had an idea, one night of training and almost constant DA practices weren’t enough anymore, he needed to do more than that. He’d talked to Krai last night, his familiar had comforted him after the thing with Ron. Krai had helped him in those hours, he’d listened as Harry ranted, he’d wrapped loosely around him when he cried and Harry’s touch seemed to help the snake also.

He’d discussed his idea with Krai; his familiar had agreed that it was probably their best option.

Now he just had to ask Sev and Remus.

    ***

Harry headed down to the Dungeons for his first ‘remedial potions’ lesson since Halloween. Last weeks lesson had been cancelled due to another attack at Hogsmeade. So this was the first chance he’d had to speak to Sev and Remus.

It had been over two and a half weeks since Halloween. Ron was still convinced that Harry was just some famous person for him to follow around and Hermione…

She and Ron had started hanging around together again, but this time as a couple. Harry hated seeing the deadened look in Blaise’s eyes whenever they passed him, he hated having nothing but reassurances for the other boy, the old “It’ll be alight in the end.” crap. It didn’t work out that way, it never did. It was like Ron and Hermione had forgotten anything and everything that was in some way linked with him. It was his fault that Blaise was hurting.

They didn’t remember the DA, everything that the three of them had been through over the years. Hermione didn’t remember that she was corresponding with her old boyfriend the International Quidditch player Viktor Krum and Ron didn’t know anything about Blaise. The only reason he could come up with for this was that both Viktor and Blaise had links to him, he and Blaise were friends and Viktor and he had been competitors in the Tri-wizard tournament. There was no other explanation, they remembered everything else, they’re schoolwork, their family, everything bar him. They didn’t even remember how to do summoning charms because of him and had had to relearn that in charms the other day.

He wanted to talk to Remus and Sev before they got started firing curses at him. He didn’t feel like having the conversations he needed to when he was exhausted, he had the funny feeling that he might just have to take off running after he’d told Severus what his Dad had said. He knew it was a good thing what he would be telling him, but it might just bring up bad memories for the man. And Harry didn’t want to do that, he actually liked Sev. And if someone had told him that last summer then he would have either laughed, hexed them or done both.

Harry felt Krai shift against his neck, the snake seemed a bit more aware of everything today. And was taking notice of his surroundings again, instead of using the journey to sleep. Harry absentmindedly stroked his familiars head while he thought.

Harry knocked on the door the moment he reached it, shortly after that Snape was opening the door and snapping at him to get inside. But like usual things were different the moment Harry passed the threshold and the door was closed. He was swept into a light hug by his Godfather, the other occupant of the room and Sev’s hand clasped his shoulder in a friendly gesture.

‘He looks a bit more alert today.’ Remus commented, pulling away. His Godfather’s eyes were on his familiar.

‘He is but he still doesn’t speak much.’ Harry replied. He missed the sudden look of understanding in his Potion Master’s eyes.

‘Harry when you said he was poisoned, I assumed it was from some common variety used to kill rodents that you’re familiar might have consumed when feeding.’

Harry shook his head. ‘I thought that at first but it just seemed a little too coincidental. I think its Dumbledore but I don’t know what poison it was. Hagrid never said, I don’t think he knew.’

Snape nodded. ‘If he had he would have come to me for an antidote. But Hagrid has no knowledge of these matters, he would likely have assumed what I did and acted accordingly. May I examine Krai?’

Harry nodded and handed Krai over. Snape did everything from checking Krai’s teeth and eyes to rubbing at the scales at the back of the snake’s head and sniffing it. Harry felt that that was distinctly weird. Seeing this Sev smirked but didn’t offer an explanation.

‘What about his eating and excretory habits?’

‘Er, he’s gotten better over the last few days, but at first he hardly ate anything at all.’

‘Did he excrete more than seemed physically possible after eating such a small amount?’

‘Yeah.’ Harry replied, hoping that Snape had some idea what was wrong.

‘Harry, Krai has been given a very subtle and dangerous potion. The potion is known as ‘Latia Kawe’, its an old name originating in the Elven language. The literal meaning is ‘Animal death’, it was invented at a time when both Muggle’s and Wizard’s feared all manner of magical creatures. It was created to kill any creature, whether Magical or Muggle and is highly illegal. The base for it is a concoction of silver and Wormwood. The combination is quite deadly on its own but when another substance is added it is basically the end for whatever creature has come into contact with it…’

    ‘Does that mean…’

‘No Harry not yet.’ And he went into lecture mode. ‘Luckily the potion can be diluted by an infusion of sandalwood essence. In its pure undiluted form it is un-curable and death occurs within an hour of consumption in some species but can react almost instantly within other species. Werewolves and snake varieties being two of them. But the diluted form dependent on its strength can be reversed if caught in time. Dumbledore wouldn’t dare give an instantaneous dose as one of the last ingredients to be added is a piece of the Wizard or Witch that created the potion. Saliva or hair being the most common. This enables the potion to distinguish between human and animal. How it is done remains unknown, the secrets of those who made it have been lost and thankfully no one has been able to recreate its effects.’

‘I don’t care about that, what about Krai?’

‘The form Krai has been subjected to invokes terrible sickness in the creature, it lasts for several days then the effects wane over a period of one week, maybe even three until completely gone. But the potion remains in the system slowly weakening the immune system and penetrating the most vulnerable places of the body. Krai is currently in the waning period but in a week and a half, maybe slightly more than that the potion which is spread thinly throughout the bodies system will re-join at a point on the spinal vertebrae before ascending rapidly to the brain. Upon contact the potion reacts instantaneously with the cerebral fluid, causing a small implosion reminiscent of a brain storm and instant death. The result is sudden and untraceable to the maker as all aspects of the potion are obliterated upon impact. This is not so with the instantaneous dose as the burnout is so fast that not all of the potion is obliterated. He wouldn’t dare use that, an examination would reveal both the method used and the maker.’

‘How do we stop it?’ Harry asked, his irritation growing, he didn’t need to know this he just needed to know how to fix it.

‘It will take me a week to brew the antidote and it must be administered hourly for five days. You will have to leave Krai with me as you will be in lessons. After its administration Krai should recover quickly. But he must continue to pretend to be weak or Dumbledore will know something is wrong and try a different tactic. Unfortunately when you return from the Christmas holidays, I am of course assuming that you don’t want to stay here during Christmas…’ Harry nodded. ‘When you come back he will know it has failed and will try something else, there is nothing we can do about that. We will all just have to be on our guard for threats.’

Harry nodded. ‘Sir do you mind if I go back to my dormitory? I don’t feel like practicing.’

‘I understand Harry, however I have one more thing I must tell you.’

He waited until he had Harry’s full attention before continuing. ‘We know what it is that has been done to Ron and Hermione.’

Remus stepped forward drawing Harry’s attention away from Sev. ‘The spell is degenerative, it attacks any memory or feeling associated with a certain theme, thing or person. In this case, you. It begins by weakening the ties. In Hermione’s case it began by weakening your friendship, by attacking the memories that the person stars in. In the beginning she would have known you, remembered you but would not have understood you’re significance in her life. This has steadily worsened and now she has no memory of you in her life baring that you are a famous student at her school. With Ron the caster sped up the effects, he had no need to be subtle. Unfortunately there is no reversal spell, it will only end when the caster dies. But there’s no guarantee that they’ll get every memory back.’ Remus finished sadly.

    No guarantee?

Harry could barely do anything, he just nodded again dumbly before turning back towards the door. This time though he did remember to pick Krai up on his way. He was almost at the door when he remembered that he had some things to tell them too.

‘Um, me and Draco. We’re going to bond at Christmas. We figure Dumbledore already knows so what’s the point in hiding it. We want you two to come and be the witnesses.’

‘We’d be honoured Harry.’ Remus replied, Sev just nodded.

Neither of them stepped forward to hug him or offer him any other form of comfort, they both knew to give him his space in events like these. Everybody was different, Blaise needed comfort when he was upset. But it made Harry feel uncomfortable, he was getting better though. But right now he didn’t feel like being comforted. Harry just wanted to go to his bed.

Harry nodded. ‘We were also wondering if you wouldn’t mind training us during that time. We can’t do much with just one night a week and DA practices.’

This time it was Sev that answered him. ‘Of course Harry.’

Harry was almost to the door again when he stopped. ‘My Dad…he gave me a message for you.’

Harry sighed, bringing the memory forward, he knew every word his Dad had spoken by heart. He’d remembered it because it made him realise that even though his Dad was a bully when in school, he had eventually grown up. It made the disappointment he’d felt at his Dad’s actions lessen. He’d been able to forgive his Dad after that.

‘He said…“I want to apologise for every name I’ve ever called him and every prank I’ve ever pulled. All I can say for my actions is that I’ve had time to get to know him in a way, the circumstances of his life, I understand him better now. I didn’t then and I didn’t make the effort to get to know him but I wish I had. I want you to tell him and Moony that they have my blessing. It may not be much and it may not matter at all, as even if I disagreed I couldn’t stop them. I just think, if we’d all been friends maybe their lives and your lives would have been different.” They said that they didn’t blame you for telling Voldemort about them and they told me to give you both their blessings.’

He couldn’t turn round and look at either of their faces, he just left.

    ***

It was a week later when Harry made a breakthrough. Sev had brewed the antidote for Krai and Harry had left the snake with him two days ago. Earlier that day Sev had given him detention and Harry had been able to go and see how Krai was doing. His familiar looked much better and seemed to be enjoying his time spent with the ‘Dark one’ as he called Sev. But when he saw Harry he had been perfectly content to curl up in his ‘Master’s’ lap and be petted while Harry told him all that had happened. Krai gave him advice on his ideas for the DA and made a few suggestions of other places to look into for Slytherin’s portrait but that was all.

He knew that the bond between them had shifted again. Krai didn’t guide him so much anymore, he still kept a few secrets but he told him more and more each day of the things that he could. Krai encouraged him to think for himself now, he made suggestions when they talked or when asked but he didn’t rattle off lists of things for Harry to do that day anymore.

The end result of a familiar bond was what they were heading towards now. Friendship. The familiar was a guide, they helped their bond mates overcome weaknesses and gain new strengths. When their job was almost over their roles as Mentors lessened and turned to friendship, a strong friendship almost at the same level as that of a soul mate, a husband or a wife. And that was what Krai was to him now, a companion, not a mentor. Harry was in charge of his own life now and Krai had given him that. He’d known not to trust Dumbledore since fifth year, just being told to take a seat in the man’s office made him queasy. How long would he have lasted on his own? How long would he have lasted without knowing the things Krai had told him?

He wasn’t sure he would have.

The entrance hall was quiet and dark when he took the final step up from the dungeons.
He glanced around and luckily didn’t spot Mrs Norris, it wasn’t past curfew yet but it was pretty close.

    Then he saw it.

There was one thing that Harry had never even thought about before. In the entrance hall, upon the wall above the first landing of the stairs that led to the grand staircase was a crest. The Hogwart’s crest and there on it was a lion, an eagle, a badger and…a snake. The crest unlike the tapestries around the castle was solid. Each figure upon it moulded and embossed with patterns of feathers, fur and scales. Standing there at that moment he actually studied it for once instead of just glancing at it in passing. The lion and the snake were facing each other, so were the badger and the eagle, coincidence? He didn’t think so.

It may not mean anything but it was an interesting observation. The closer he stepped to it the more certain he was that he was finally in the right place. Now all he needed to do was figure out the password.

He supposed that ‘Open’ would be the most obvious thing in the world, after all that was the password that guarded the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. What else could it be? If the password was in parceltongue then who needed really complicated passwords anyway?

    ~Open~

    Nothing happened.

~Speak to me, Slytherin, greatest of the Hogwarts Four~

    Nothing!

What else was there? There’s never been anything else. How could he come this far and fail? He knew it was here, it had to be. The portrait was behind this wall he was sure of it.

Oh come on plea… Please! Well it had worked before, so why not now?

    ~Please Open Up ~

For a moment, he thought it hadn’t worked then he heard a soft sigh and a breath of air swept past his cheek. Glancing around he saw no other difference, baring a patch of wall that had darkened in colour. One rectangle of pale grey stone had turned a light brown. To the touch it felt glossy, polished as opposed to the unpolished yet smooth feel of the old stone that had been worn so by its many years of occupancy.

There was no handle but Harry was still convinced that this was a door and since he couldn’t pull he pushed instead. The door swung open easily. This surprised Harry, as he was expecting some slight resistance from a door clogged with dust, after all it hadn’t been opened in centuries.

But then he saw what lay beyond and he knew that Voldemort had been there. A long time ago perhaps but he had been there. He remembered the portrait in the chamber, the lifeless form of Salazar Slytherin slumped in its frame. He knew that no portrait could survive such an attack as what must have taken place. The walls were blackened, the stone flaking and cracked as though a great fire had ravaged it, its heat great enough to even harm stone.

Taking a step inside Harry felt a numbness creeping in, this was the only hint he had. The only way to save Draco.

A sudden burst of anger had him slamming his fists into the wall. The black dust fell in a shower from beneath his hands.

‘There is no need for that my young friend!’

The exclamation brought Harry around. He hadn’t seen it but this room was kind of like a little corridor, the darkness had hidden the rest of it and at the end of it was the portrait. And looking out at him were Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor. He’d seen Salazar before of course, so his appearance shouldn’t shock him so but none of the times he’d seen him had he been living. Well he wasn’t exactly living now, a moving portrait was nothing but a parody of life. But either way seeing this semblance of life was more shocking than the stone figure in the chamber, the dead portrait or the dead man’s actual face, real and preserved but less alive than that stone statue.

Harry had seen a similarity in their looks before but now, he didn’t have to look for it, no now he was faced with the glaringly obvious. Salazar’s skin was golden, almost the exact same shade as Harry’s own. His black hair was worn long much like Harry’s own, the only difference being that whereas Harry’s hair was more wild, Salazar’s was straight and had begun to be peppered with grey.

The grey eyes so like Draco’s were fixed on him. As were another set. Godric’s blue eyes were focused on him as well. The other man, slightly older than Salazar brushed a lock of his auburn hair from his eyes and regarded him with a small smile. He was clearly the one who had spoken.

‘An heir of ours here again. It has been so long.’

He turned his attention back to Salazar in time to catch a soft sigh. ‘Hopefully this one will not disappointment us so.’

‘That young man was not our heir Sal, he may be blood kin to you distantly but neither he nor the actions he has taken are any fault of yours. Remember that.’

    ‘Tom Riddle.’

The sound of Harry’s voice brought both of their attentions back to him. Salazar’s gaze turned speculative for a moment.

‘Are you the one we have been waiting so long for.’ he said cocking his head to the side, his regard intensifying.

Harry nodded slightly, though he couldn’t say whether he was answering Salazar or not. The man smirked in answer.

‘Step forward boy. We can do you no harm.’ Even as he did so Harry noted Salazar’s choice of words, “we can do you no harm” instead of a reassuring ‘We will do you no harm.’ Maybe those words weren’t in Salazar’s vocabulary.

He stopped just before the painting, a sconce upon the wall lit itself and cast his features into pale relief. Both men nodded, Godric’s a more hearty nod than Salazar’s almost invisible incline of the head.

‘He is ours.’ Godric muttered. ‘But it he the one?’

‘Why are you here boy?’ Salazar snapped. ‘Do not waste our time if you have no purpose.’

Harry swallowed. This was so weird. He’d honestly never given the Founder’s much thought, well not unless you counted second year and the opening of the Chamber of Secrets. But recently he’d been thinking about these two a lot and what he would say to them when he found the portrait but now, standing here he had no idea where to begin.

Sighing he tried anyway. ‘The Sorting Hat told me your story, he told me that since then your descendents have been cursed and die young after baring one or two children. I have just found my mate and have no wish to see him die…’

‘But everyday the desire to mate with him grows stronger…’ Salazar interrupted him. ‘And one day soon you must give in to your desires and what then, if he is successfully seeded and carries to term your deaths are assured. Is that all you come to us for?’

‘Now Salazar do not carry on so.’

The dark haired man sighed at his own lover and mate. ‘Godric I had hoped that this child would be the one to end all of this…’

‘He may yet be love, have patience. He is here, only one other has ever reached us here…’

‘Yes and such a disappointment he was, to think that my family line could beget that! That my brother could bring him and his ancestors into this world.’

‘Voldemort…Tom Riddle, he isn’t your heir’ It was a statement, not a question as Harry already knew the answer.

‘No child he is not.’ Godric agreed. ‘But Salazar blames himself still for that young man’s existence…’

‘He isn’t young anymore.’ Harry muttered. But Godric ignored him and continued.

‘Salazar’s brother had a bastard child and that child was the ancestor of the one who would call himself Voldemort. As blood kin Sal feels it is his responsibility to eliminate him.’

‘You tell him too much Godric.’

‘Hush love, we must know. Child…’

‘My name is Harry.’ He interrupted quickly. ‘And I have only until Christmas to find an answer.’

Godric nodded. ‘Harry, forgive his crankiness life has not been good to him and spending so many years with just each other to talk to has made him a trifle odd.’

‘Me!’ Salazar exclaimed. ‘And what about you mate of mine?’

‘I do not know what you are talking about.’ Godric replied before turning his attention back to Harry. The figure of Salazar just threw up his hands in an exasperated manner.

‘Now Harry you mentioned that you had a mate, would you tell me what creature it is that you are? As the gift does not seem to have fully manifested in you yet.’

‘My familiar…’ he began ignoring the sudden stiffening of Salazar’s frame and the hope in his eyes. ‘My familiar says that I have four bloods and that it is unlikely the fourth will come through. He hasn’t told me what that one is yet. He says he wants me to focus on the active ones for now rather than dwelling on or hoping for what I might not get.’

    ‘Completely understandable.’ Godric agreed.

‘But which bloods do you have?’ Salazar exclaimed, loosing patience.

Harry shot him an exasperated look before continuing. He thought both Founders were a little eccentric. ‘Dark elf and Cat demon. But my strongest blood is the Draco.’

For a moment he didn’t think they had heard him then Salazar let out an almighty ‘whoop’ and grabbed Godric and led him in an impromptu jig around the chairs in which they had been seated. Bemused Harry watched them for a few moments until they finally seemed to settle down again.

Salazar was smiling now and a genuine smile too, gentle and almost paternal. Filled with pride, something that Harry didn’t see often.

‘You are the one to defeat him then?’ Godric asked.

    ‘Voldemort? Yeh I am.’

Salazar let out another ‘whoop’, this one much quieter than the last. Godric just shook his head. ‘I should have made him take a bet.’

    Harry smiled.

‘We’ve waited a long time for you to come Harry.’ Salazar breathed.

‘How did you know that I was the one to defeat him?’ Harry asked, thinking that there was no way they could have heard the prophecy.

Salazar sighed before retaking his seat. ‘The tail is not a long one, nor is it particularly pleasant. It is something that I am not proud of but stand by as a decision I had to make and could not have changed, even now for a better solution for one does not exist. You spoke of the sorting hat, did he tell you of my heritage? The blood that runs through my…and your veins?’

    ‘Merlin’s blood.’

‘Aye Merlin’s blood. Understand that as a child knowing that you were the descendent of such a being would give you great confidence in your abilities. Almost to the point of being condescending and hurtful to those you saw as beneath you. It is easy for such a thing to occur. I am sure it still does nowadays, maybe for different reasons but still there. No doubt a child with a special skill not present in his siblings is sometimes treated as a Prince and the others spurned.’

Thinking of his own childhood with the Dursleys Harry nodded. In that case though it was having the special skill that was undesirable to the family.

‘Well so it was like for me. It had been so long since the Merlin line begat a son that I was hailed and treated as a star newly come to earth. It was so that my reputation grew as a…impolite individual. My path might have been so different if I had not come across three others, powerful like myself but more humble than I. And if I had not found my lifemate amongst them, our lives and yours would have been so different. Life was good and I lost that seemingly dark personality that still haunts my name to this day. But some things must be kept hidden from the masses.’

    ‘Your relationship.’

‘Aye it was not a common thing back then. Amongst wizards it was as is now accepted. It was the Muggleborns and their families that had such a problem with our union. The spell to erase memory was such a necessity in those times, to protect a wizards identity from those Muggles that would do him harm and to protect that same wizard from those who would hurt him for whom he loved. Like you I wished to protect my mate. It was no secret that I had a dislike of teaching Muggleborns for teaching them increased the risks. I hope that you would not blame me for this.’

Harry could only shake his head. He’d always thought that Slytherin found Muggles and Muggleborns to be inferior, this made so much more sense.

‘But even with that threat, I was happy.’

‘We both were.’ Godric said taking Salazar’s hand in his. ‘And we remain so.’

‘Yes we are.’ Sal smiled. ‘That all changed when we became pregnant. Yes ‘we’. Almost at the same time it would appear. Such a strange thing, but welcome. I am sure you know how and why a wizard can get pregnant. No? Magic of course. As long as there have been mates of same sex there has been pregnancy. Our kind are too few to worry about such a little thing as gender. Magic makes so many things possible. It was a great gift in those days to be chosen to bear a child. For even though it is possible not everyone is found deserving of such a thing. And to gift us with two children, we were blessed.’

‘It is known amongst witches and wizards that when a child comes alive in the womb so does his magic. At that moment when the child within me came awake I had a vision. I am not prone to the divinatory arts, so when this occurred I was most surprised. My child with a burst of awakening power gave us an insight into the future of our world. And what I saw…I saw the rise of the dark arts and a Lord of the Dark so great that he would rival Mordred himself. I saw our world turned upside down by a false ruler and the last of my blood overcome by his power. How was I to stop this? I couldn’t even tell Godric all that I had seen.’

‘I kept my fears secret until after the child was born, hopeful that I would see more. But no further vision came to me. It took many years for the solution to be realised. Have you ever heard of an Oracle?’

    Harry shook his head. ‘No.’

‘An Oracle is a spirit, a spirit that knows anything and everything. The spirit is always female and she will answer you any question that you may wish to ask. But you may only ask once so you must choose wisely. It took me some time to decide on my question but I finally asked “How is the Dark Lord to be defeated?” The answer that I was given was simple at the best. The Oracle said that “the only way to defeat the Dark Lord was for the blood of Merlin’s line to still be strong”. And that was all the answer I was given. Re-examining my memories of the vision, I saw at least eight living descendents of our line, spread out across the world. And I realised the problem. Magic is a limited force but not many know how it is limited. A certain amount of magic exists in a family line. In Merlin’s more than most but still a limited amount and when divided by so many descendents, no single descendent had the necessary power to defeat him. And not knowing each other but a little couldn’t come together to defeat him. I had to find a way for the power to be contained in no more than two individuals.’

Harry was shocked, he could see where this was going. ‘But if Voldemort is of your line then doesn’t that mean he has a share of this power?’

‘Yes but it is much more complicated than that. Since the full level of power is gifted upon the seventeenth year a portion of power is given to whoever reaches this age first. The ones that follow receive progressively less power. So since Merlin’s day his true level of power has been depleted, for when a member of the family marries they then share the power allotted with their future offspring. The power boosted by the power of the one they wed, but though increased is still limited. Whenever a member dies their power goes back into the whole. Tom Riddle is the last living descendent of my younger brother’s line.’

‘So when you were born you were given less power than your sisters?’ At Salazar’s nod he continued. ‘Your brother who was born after you was given less than you. So when you wedded Godric your children received their power from what remained in his line and yours?’ Salazar nodded again. ‘So when a member of your family died the power they held rejoined the portion that remained.’

Salazar nodded. ‘I was the last of our family to die. My sisters all went before me and so did my younger brother. By that time I’d realised what I had to do. I had to ensure that in the time of the Dark Lord my descendents would be powerful enough to defeat him.’

Harry had a sudden understanding. ‘You cast the curse. You were the one who set it, on your own family. You needed to make sure that Merlin’s power wasn’t divided too many times.’

‘It was the only way. The curse I cast would change circumstance so that no more than two descendents would be alive for any significant length of time. Unfortunately it meant that the children of my line would lose their parents at an early age.’

Harry nodded. ‘My Father, Remus told me they had him late in life, they saw my birth but died soon after. And my Mum and Dad died when I was only one.’

‘I am sorry about that.’ Salazar said with regret.

‘Voldemort killed him.’ Harry muttered to himself, trying to make sense of who to blame.

‘Your Father would have died an early death Harry but not then, and you would have still had your Mother.’

Salazar’s words were blunt but truthful. It was still Voldemort’s fault.

‘So how do I stop this curse from taking Draco?’

Harry asked, purposely avoiding any further thought of his parents death. He still needed the painting, that hadn’t changed.

‘Defeat the Dark Lord. There is no other way.’

A/N…Ok so what do you think? Was the magic explanation pure confusion or did it make sense. I’ll hopefully be going into more detail and answering more questions in the next chapter.
