The Grindelwald Legacy
A/A: Thank you so much for the good reviews, and I’m sorry for the delay in posting. That stupid bug’s got a grip on me again and I seem to have gone into lethargic mode. Will post what I can, when I can, but might be a bit slow going for a while. ccino
Chapter 39
As they walked towards the castle, the carriages that would bring the students from Hogsmead station were being prepared by Hagrid. “What are those things?” Lucy asked when she saw the large, black skeletal horses being harnessed to the carriages.
“Those are Thestrals, I am disappointed you are able to see them.” Albus told her.
“You’re what? Why? Course I can see them, they’re ugly, but not exactly invisible. Though looking at them I wish they were. Ugh.”
“Thestrals are a magical creature, and only visible to those who have witnessed death. That is the reason I am saddened they are visible to you.”
“Wow. Are they vicious or anything?”
“No, but you will learn about them during your lessons with Hagrid, there is not much about magical creatures that our Hagrid does not know.”
“We spoke a few times, he loves dragons you know.”
“I was aware of that.” Albus laughed. It would appear he has a kindred spirit in you when it comes to all things bestial.”
“Probably, except I’m not too keen on spiders, and I saw some whoppers in a shop in Diagon Alley. Err, you don’t have any like that here do you?”
“Some, and much larger than the ones you saw. As long as you do not enter the Forbidden Forest you will avoid them.”
“Why is it forbidden? I mean is it just because of the spiders, or are there other things in there too?”
“There are many things in the forest that one would not wish to meet when alone. It is best you avoid it.”
Lucy shivered as she looked back at the dense foliage and multitude of trees behind them. “The ghosts in the castle are bad enough, I don’t intend to go looking for trouble Headmaster.”
“I am glad to hear it. Ah, home at last. I believe you know your way to the dungeons, find Professor Snape and he will show you to the Slytherin dormitory. I must go to the kitchens and inform Winky of her new service starting tomorrow.”
Finding herself alone, and wary of the Bloody Baron showing up again, Lucy headed towards the dungeons. Gran and the headmaster never did explain why the Professor had left, and she wondered what kind of reception she would receive.
“Have you never heard of knocking Miss Grindelwald?” Severus snapped when Lucy opened the classroom door.
“Oh, sorry Professor, I wasn’t sure if you were in here or not.”
“Had you knocked, then my reply, or lack thereof, would have immediately informed you of whether or not I was in residence. In future you will not enter this room without knocking first, then you will wait for admittance to be granted. Is that understood?”
“Yes Sir.”
“Well, what do you want?”
“The Headmaster said I was to find you, so you can show me where to go.”
“Wait in the corridor, I will escort you when I have finished this.”
Lucy stepped back outside and closed the door. “Crabby beggar.” She muttered under her breath.
Severus finished sorting through his timetables, then arranged them on the desk ready to collect before heading to the Sorting feast. He would only hand out the seventh year timetables, the prefects would pass on rest.
Lucy shifted from one foot to the other. The ten minutes she waited felt more like half an hour, and she was cold in this corridor.
Severus smirked when he found her shivering. “Are you too dim witted to think of using a warming spell Miss Grindelwald?”
Lucy scowled at his retreating figure. “No I’m not, I just didn’t think I’d have to wait so long.” She followed him along a corridor which sloped downward quite steeply in places, they turned left and stopped in front of a portrait of a snake, curved in the shape of a letter ‘S’. “The password is ‘Puris ab intra’, meaning ’pure from within’. Do not forget it, do not reveal it to anyone other than another Slytherin. It is subject to change, in which case you will be informed via prefect of the new password. In you go.”
Lucy stepped through the long portal into a large, low-ceilinged, dungeon like room. Green lamps, chairs, and sofas were dotted about the room, as well as tables and the occasional rug scattered on the floor. Noticing the fire blazing in the hearth, Lucy stepped towards it.
“Don’t get comfortable yet, your dormitory is down there. Your belongings have already been taken to your dorm, so it should not prove too difficult to find your locale. You will share with four other female students, Millicent Bulstrode, Pansy Parkinson, Tracy Davis, and Daphne Greengrass. I suggest you make yourself known to them at the earliest opportunity, and acquaint yourself with them. As they will be your housemates for the next two years, it would be inadvisable to make enemies of any of your peers. The boys dormitories are on the upper level of Slytherin, I do not expect you to find any reason to locate yourself in that area. Likewise I do not expect to enter these rooms and find a male presence in the girls dormitories. As your head of house I am obliged to listen should you have any problems as regard schoolwork, peer pressure and such, I do not expect you to have any of these problems Miss Grindelwald. Settle in, find your room, and I will collect you when the students arrival is imminent.” Severus turned and started to leave the common room.
“Yeah, thanks for that Professor.” Lucy said softly.
He turned to see her staring round the room and hugging herself.
“And that remark means what exactly?”
“It means I understand perfectly, you aren’t interested. I gathered you don’t like me a long time ago so don’t worry Professor, any problems I might have, I wont be knocking on your door.”
He stared at her for a moment. “It was not my intention to make you feel alienated Miss Grindelwald. If you have a true problem, then come to me by all means.” He relented.
“Yes it was Professor. You hated me from day one because of those blasted Lionfish spines. I’ve tried real hard to be right with you, and you rejected every attempt I made. Well I’ve got the message so don’t worry, I won’t be bothering you.”
Slightly discomforted by her words, and the manner in which she spoke, Severus felt a small pang of guilt. She had not snapped at him, her words more downhearted than anything else, as though she had given up, lost her fire. “I do not hate you Miss Grindelwald, that does not mean I like you, merely that you are just another student here to give me a headache. You will have the same privileges, and punishment as the rest of my Slytherins, I will not treat you any different provided you behave yourself. I cannot say fairer than that. Good afternoon to you.”
When he left Lucy looked once more round the room, then made her way down the passage that housed the girls dormitories, The third door along said sixth years on the small plaque attached to the door and she went inside.
Five large four poster beds were arranged round a large, hexagonal room. Five of the walls had a bed, cabinet, chair, and wardrobe, while the other wall had a large fireplace with a door on either side. On investigation, one opened to reveal a large, walk in closet, it contained shelves for the communal storage of luggage, pegs for outdoor coats, and a shoe rack. Since her cases were already in the cupboard, Lucy checked the beds and found her backpack and schoolbag sat neatly on the chair by one of the beds. The other door led into a bathroom, with a row of sinks, four bathtubs, and a communal shower with several showerheads.
Closer inspection showed her things had already been put away, only the contents of her backpack and schoolbag still intact. Lucy chuckled to herself at the thought of one of the elf’s trying to figure out what the laptop was, or where it was supposed to go. As with the common room, this room was decked out in green, occasional silver trim showing up here and there. The walls were of stone, with dark wood panelling on the lower half. She bounced on her bed to see how springy it was, finding it a little on the soft side. Smiling slyly to herself, Lucy willed it to be a bit firmer, then bounced again. “Perfect.” She stated, then hid her bag in the bedside locker. As an afterthought she willed the cabinet to be locked against everyone but her, then opened her wardrobe and donned the new school uniform. As soon as she put it on it began to change. The black tie, which until now had a small Hogwarts crest on it, now was green and silver, with a small serpent on a green field depicted just below the knot. Her jumper became dark green, and her socks had a green stripe around the edge. She quickly removed the socks and put on a pair of black tights in their place.
When Severus entered the common room a couple of hours later, he found Lucy sprawled of the sofa reading a magazine. “The carriages have already left for the station, follow me to the main entrance. Once the students arrive and begin embarking form the carriages, make your way into the Great Hall and take a seat at your house table. You will recognise it by the banner hanging above.”
Lucy stuffed the magazine under the seat cushion, then had to run to catch up with the professor.
By the time they reached the main entrance she was panting.
