He had caught up with the younger vampire quickly enough and followed silently as a wolf from a distance. Edge was tense and completely closed off to him. He felt his chest constrict but knew it was his own damn fault, but he couldn’t bring himself to leave the younger, not just yet. There were still somethings he wanted answers to and things he felt he needed to do.
Edge returned to the castle but seem bothered when he couldn’t find his Childe there. He followed close enough he could sneak into the castle but was too slow to sneak into the revolving staircase that took Edge out his sight. With a sigh he reached out through the bond being careful not to alert Edge to his being there. He would not be able to see anything but he would be able to hear and smell whatever Edge did. An old man, no doubt another human, was explaining that the Childe had gone to another location for the Christmas holidays. Naturally, Edge was upset, but settled when he was told he could join his Childe, but would need an escort to the location. Spells to ensure sight and sound was taken from him would also be required. He felt himself tense just as much as Edge had. Sight and sound to a vampire was just as life-saving as their sense of smell was. He would not allow Edge to go without him.
Reaching out, he found the old mans mind, and found his way inside. The man was an Occlumens and Legimens, but it was still easy enough to sneak his way in. He had centuries of practice at subtle mind control, the wizards meager years of experience was nothing compared to his. With the idea planted, he stepped back and allowed things to play out on their own. He was not disappointed when he felt a reluctant pull on the bond to summon him. He allowed a few minutes then made his way into the office.
The dark haired Potential was not happy to have to escort them both to where ever the secret location was hidden. He smirked at the wizard enjoying the scowl that was sent his way. The man, Severus apparently, would be fun to play with. He could smell recent potions all over the man. A Potions Master. Well, that could be useful. On a whim, he touched the others mind with his own and was surprised to find he would not be able to get in without notice. He searched the shields for any weaknesses and found none. Very interesting. He found himself curious on how powerful the others mind would be if he transitioned.
It was unnerving to be so handicapped on their travel. He kept his grip on Edge and gritted his teeth. All he had was smell but it was enough to tell him they had arrived in a city. The old moldy scent of the building they entered made him scrunch his nose in disgust. The feel of the place made his skin crawl. It was a dark house but he could not sense any recent evil within its walls. He felt the spells lift away and was instantly assaulted by the most horrific screeching and yelling he had ever heard, and for him that was saying a lot, and sighed in relief when it stopped. Quietly, he followed the Potions Master through the house allowing Edge to remain between them. The human was nervous with him so close, but seemed okay yet still tense with Edge, and his scent was different than before. It was not as tantalizing as it had been and had the slightest sour hint, so slight others might have missed it. Was Edge aware of the change? Had the Childe formed a Pair bond? Surely not. He was still much too young for that. Wasn’t he? How different could development be when feeding from a Potential?
They had entered a small, well-lit study that was warm from a blazing fire in the fireplace. He allowed himself a few seconds to soak it in before focusing on the bodies inside. The wolf had progressed but still hindering himself with Wolfsbane. He felt irritation rise. What good would he be as a Guardian if he kept crippling himself so much? The Childe had moved close to the Potions Master. He eyed the two closely throughout the conversation. The Childe was in front, obviously a protective move against an unknown such as himself, and the stoic man allowed the dark cat the privilege without fuss. In fact, he seemed more relaxed than he had been the entire time. There was a bond there, that much was obvious, but did it go deep enough to be a pair bond? There was only one way to find out.
And that was how he ended up almost losing his arm. He took the offered blood sent to him from the Headmaster, reached out to place the suggestion he was to remain in the house, and settled himself into a room of his own. He acted as though he wanted to leave but was quite content to remain where he was. He was warm, had a roof over his head, and a bed to sleep in during the day. What vampire could ask for more?
Talking about Darius with Edge had made him feel vulnerable. The only slightly positive thing that came of that little discussion was that Edge had taken to spending time with him each morning. His adopted Childe look pale for a few nights, despite feeding, and his eyes were haunted. The little clan eventually was able to make the vampire smile again. It made him question just how they were all able to coexist among each other. He took to watching them, observing them as they interacted with each other. It was good to see Edge being accepted so well. It would make things easier.
The full moon came and went.
He had been pleased to notice the change in the werewolf. He had finally accepted what he was and would fulfill the Guardian role quite nicely. Just as he assumed, the wolf was strong without the poison running through his system each month. He was surprised; however, that the mate had been bitten. What was going on there? Was there a point to that? He had kept quiet when Edge told him they were going to bond during the first full moon. There would be no point in arguing. Even he could tell it had already been firmly decided before the mate had even been bit. He felt his heart yearn for his late Guardian. His heart also yearned for his own little family again, the one that was no longer within his reach. He could not begrudge Edge for keeping the little family he had found together the best he could.
His concern lay with the Childe and the Potions Master. The Childe was powerful, a fact that was only enhanced by being turned, and further enhanced by feeding from a Potential. He had already mastered many skills that took himself and Edge much more time to accomplish. It was also clear that the youngest vampire was severely attached to the dark haired human. He was certain there was more to the boys feelings than just the bond or friendship. The Potions Master even seemed to have an attachment to the little vampire. It was more subtle, but he noticed that the spy constantly kept track of the boy if they were in the same room. He had even caught the Slytherin (whatever that label meant) watching fondly as the Childe would interact with his friends. Would the Childe be able to function if the spy ever perished?
Watching the Potions Master leave in a hurry bothered him. The man smelt afraid and nervous. He could remember Edge mentioning that he was a spy. The man must have been going to meet with this supposed Dark Lord. He was even more bothered when the man returned unable to walk on his own. It had taken both the Childe and Edge to carry the Potions Master to his room. Edge was visibly upset when he had returned to his room that night.
“How is he?”
Edge looked at him. “He’ll recover. Do you actually care?”
No, but Edge did. “He appears important to you.”
“You really aren’t going to try to get along with them, are you?” Edge sighed and shook his head.
“I have no desire to attach myself to others, no. It has not gone well in the past; I suspect the results will end up the same.” In all honestly he was so very tired. Five centuries was a very long time live. He did not say so to Edge.
“You never know until you try.”
He said nothing for a minute or so. “Why did you turn the boy?”
Edge tensed and looked away from him. He looked bothered. “I…” A deep sigh. “I wasn’t supposed to. I had been recruited to kill him, honestly, but when I tasted him…” Edge ran a hand through his hair. “I’m sure you understand the rest.”
He narrowed his eyes. “Not really. There were other options.”
“You think I don’t realize that now.” Edge growled at him. “I was hungry, tired, and alone. I was always okay with being alone as a human but being this…a century alone is just depressing.”
Yes, that he could agree with. His own self isolation was hard but for Edge, who was forced into isolation; it must have been much harder.
“I was desperate. My instincts yelled to turn him so I did without thinking.” Edge started to pace growling under his breath. “You think I’m proud of it? You think I don’t regret what I’ve done every single night since?”
“Of course you do. You wouldn’t be you if you didn’t.”
Edge paused looking at him inquisitively. “I don’t understand you. I sometimes feel like I never did.”
He shrugged in response. “It makes sense now why you didn’t turn them both. You did wrong by your Childe so you have him feed from the Potential to gain strength and power quicker.”
“Their names are Harry and Severus.”
He waved that statement off. “Knowing their names and using them are two different things. Using names implies attachment. I shall use labels instead.”
Edge was silent. He could feel those blue eyes staring at him. He stood and walked over to his once lover. Edge watched him calmly. “Why are you so determined to be alone?” His voice was soft.
He said nothing, just raised his hand to a pale cheek. The truth could not be said; not right now. He stared longingly into those blue eyes that had captivated him so long ago and still did now. Edge did not move. He simply continued to watch him patiently.
“Dante…”
“Yes?”
“Don’t leave me alone.”
His heart clenched in pain. The words were said so brokenly, so vulnerably. Once upon a time he would have instantly promised that he would go nowhere. Now, though, he knew better. It was a promise he could not make. When no words came, Edge had stepped away, teeth visibly clenched, and walked out the door. It had felt like he had been stabbed. His hand clenched into a fist as it lowered back to his side and his eyes clenched shut. He could not promise Edge that he would stay but he could make it where Edge would not have to be alone again. Edge had his own little clan and he would make sure he lost none of them. That he could promise and would see to before he left for good.
The Childe had his Guardian. Edge was gaining the mate as his Guardian. Those three were already taken care of. The last one, the Potions Master, could still be lost to them. He would need to fix that. Making his decision he snuck into the basement lab and took a small empty vial from the shelf. He made sure it was clean and placed the necessary magic on it before filling it with his blood. He waited until the sun had risen enough to take the Childe under day sleep and snuck his way into the bedroom. Silently, he placed the box and note into the drawer, before pausing to just look at the two curled together on the bed. He had what they did once. He could distinctly remember curling around Edge when he was human, basking in his warmth while he slept. A deep longing settled in his bones but he was not envious of the two on the bed. The fact remained that he was so very, very tired. He turned and left just as silently as he had entered.
Potions Master,
You have no reason to trust me. I have given you none, so I will be straight to the point.
In the box, I have provided a vial full of my blood. Should you find yourself with the need, use it. It has multiple charms to keep it fresh and sanitary.
I do this on the assumption you will need it. The Childe will be unable to turn you, should you desire, due to your current bond. It will be foolish to ask.
I do not image Edge will be willing either, for the fear of upsetting the Childe, and for the fear of putting you through unimaginable pain.
You will need to make this choice for yourself. I will not be able to stick around much longer so this is the best I can do.
If you continue on the path I believe you are on, you will need this in the near future I am sure.
The choice is yours.
P.S - Your body will attempt to reject it. Take it in small doses. Be prepared to be sick.
He had forgotten that Christmas came just around the corner. He had been invited to join the festivities, as was Edge, but he declined. It would do no good for him to join them as it would only make the atmosphere tense and uncomfortable. Edge accepted. He was not surprised. It was just before midnight that Edge joined him in his room.
“You look lively.”
Edge gave a small smile as he stretched out on his bed. “It was nice. It’s been a while since I was surrounded by so many nice people.”
He had nodded and sat on the edge of the bed at the younger vampires feet. “You always did seem to crave human interaction.”
Edge simply shrugged closing his eyes.
A blast of magic surged through the walls. It was not human magic, but vampire magic. No one but them would feel it. A bond had been formed and settled. Edge shot up, eyes wide, before moving quickly toward the door. He grabbed him to prevent Edge from leaving.
“They can’t have. Let me go.”
“They did. There is nothing you can do about it.” He had believed this would occur. He was unsure how he felt about being right.
Edge turned frightened, wide eyes to him. “But…”
“I know.”
And he did know. It was the same bond that simmered between them still to this day. Since the Potential was still human it would still be a Pair bond but classified as a Claim. It would be harder to break now. He understood the fear that Edge was feeling for his Childe. The Potential was human and could/would die. The Childe would feel the loss intensely. He could only hope the Potions Master took his offer seriously. The transition would be much harder now, willing or not, but the loss would only be temporary instead of permanent.
Edge was shaking slightly. “But there is a war…Severus is a…he could literally be killed…”
“Edge.” He said it sternly catching the youngers attention. He stared into those blue eyes. “All the more reason to leave them be.”
“But…”
“Would you rather they kept themselves from each other? Or would you want them to enjoy what they have? It would be more painful for your Childe to lose the Potions Master with regrets than it will be to lose him now, bond or not. Trust me.”
His meaning was not lost on the vampire in front of him. The shivering stopped as Edge took in his words and the tone they were said. “You have regrets? Dante, what is going on?”
He sighed as he moved away turning his back on Edge. “Too many.” He left the second question unanswered.
He tensed briefly when arms wrapped around him but eventually relaxed. He felt warm for the first time in many years.
