Now a pre-wedding chapter.
Blinded: Chapter 39
Two months later:
Hermione woke up, stretching her arms out wide and feeling refreshed, but nervous. Today was the day she was finally getting married. The planning for the wedding had turned into two months as there was more to plan than she'd realized. It didn't seem like this day would ever happen when they were in the thick of the investigation with the MacAteers. All thoughts of kidnappings and death were now gone. It was time for happier thoughts.
Hermione looked around and realized she was alone and had slept in her bed by herself. Scorpios had started the night in her room, but must have left sometime during the night. Draco of all people had wanted to stick to tradition and not see the bride on her wedding day before the ceremony. He'd slept in another wing of the manor, while Hermione had stayed in their bed with Scorpius cuddled up to her after reading seven stories together. They'd given Scorpius the chance to decide if he wanted to stay with Hermione or Draco last night.
Scorpius had stood in the middle of the room for a few moments tapping his lips in his Hermione like way, and then proclaimed, "Herminee reads me more stories at night than Papa, so I choose her." He smiled widely at his soon to be mum.
Draco's mouth opened wide, "Seriously? My own son doesn't want me?" He was pretending to be shocked while Scorp stared at his Papa then looked over to Hermione for her reaction.
Hermione put her arms around Draco and looked up at him, "This is a good thing. He wants to be with his new Mum. It doesn't mean he doesn't want you, it just means he's opened his heart enough to let me in."
"I have a big heart!" Scorpius shouted out jumping up and down and then ran to them clinging to both of their legs. Yes, it was a heartwarming moment and a sign that things were finally right in their lives.
Running to the loo before she did anything else she wondered when Ginny was going to get there. This baby was growing quickly, and Hermione noticed her trips to the loo had increased. Ginny had laughed at her when she'd mentioned this the other day, "Just you wait! You haven't seen anything yet. Wait until the end of your pregnancy when you and the loo become best friends."
"Oh, that already happened at the beginning." Morning sickness had plagued her often as she was still working on the MacAteer case. It had gotten so bad she'd had to run to the bathroom or else accidently vomiting in front of everyone. It wasn't exactly the way to show how great a leader you were if you couldn't even hold down your breakfast. Thank goodness the worst of the sickness was over. Today she only felt an enormous case of nervous butterflies floating around in her stomach. It truly wasn't because she had doubts about marrying Draco. No, it was more from something happening that she never truly thought would happen. After her breakup with Ron, and the turmoil she'd gone through and the intense heartbreak, Hermione had given up on love. There had been a point where she'd convinced herself that being single and successful was enough in her life. One could still have great sex without a husband, or so she'd told herself as she'd floated from one man to another while in France. Her heart had been held securely in a locked box within her and she hadn't allowed herself to feel. It was easier that way to not be receptive to emotions, and it was easier to not miss her friends she'd left behind in England.
The knock at the door interrupted her wanderings thoughts and she jumped at the intrusion.
"Knock, knock," Ginny Potter stuck her head in the bedroom door. "How are you feeling? Ready for the big day?"
Her smile put Hermione at ease as she came over and wrapped her arms around her from behind giving her a big squeeze. It felt so good to have the closest thing she'd ever had to a sister back in her life. Hermione hadn't realized how much she'd missed Ginny until the past year as the Potter's had edged their way slowly back into her life. It felt good. It felt right. It felt like home. There hadn't been any question at all that Ginny would be her Matron of Honor on her wedding today.
"Not only am I ready, Gin, but I'm feeling excited," she said standing up to stretch. "Now this little one has been doing somersaults all morning in anticipation of it's mum and dad's big day."
"As it should be at 18 weeks along. This baby is very lucky to not only be getting a loving mum and dad, but a devoted big brother, and a hoard of crazy cousins, aunts, and uncles."
"I just wish my parents could be here today." Hermione could feel the tears building as she pictured the Wilkins in Australia who wouldn't even know that today their only daughter would be getting married. Right before Ron had gone on his cheating spree exploding any trust Hermione had in him, she'd also found out that there was no way to restore her parents memories. Experts from the Department of Mysteries had tried for weeks and failed at all attempts. This had only given Hermione one more reason to leave England and all the memories of her now lost childhood.
Ginny pulled her into her arms, "You know that you are another daughter to my mum and dad. They've always loved you and dad's so excited to give you away today. Mum was so thrilled when you asked her to plan this shindig."
Hermione laughed while wiping away the tears, reaching for a nearby tissue.
"Now, no more crying babe! This is to be a happy day and once I get your makeup done you can't mess it up. Alright?" The bossy Ginny took over with hands on her hips making her best girlfriend laugh like she'd always been able to.
"Girls?" Molly Weasley hollered out from the hallway. "I have the dress, all pressed and ready to go." The Weasley matriarch came bustling into the room exuberant as always. "Oh, there she is, the blushing bride."
"Oh, mum, they only call them blushing brides when a bride is still a virgin. As you can see, Hermione let that ship sail a long time ago," Her arms motioned towards the bride's bulging belly.
If anyone else had said that Hermione would have been offended, but coming from Gin she could only laugh because it was all too true. "Sadly," Hermione looked at Molly smirking, "You know the captain who was responsible for letting that ship sail away the first time," Ginny almost fell over in a fit of laughter.
Molly looked shocked at first and then laughed along with the younger ladies, "Yes, my foolish, younger son let the best thing in his life get away. I'm so glad that you're still letting us be a part of your life Hermione."
"Always, Molly," she reached out to hug the closest person in her life that counted as a mum now. They stood embracing each other for a moment then Molly stepped back, brushing tears off of her cheeks.
"Now, let's get busy making you the most beautiful bride ever." Molly patted Hermione's arm.
Ginny huffed, flipping her hair in mock offense, "I thought I was the most beautiful bride ever?"
"Oh, darling, don't you know? Every woman is the most beautiful bride ever on their wedding day." Molly hugged both girls to her in her nurturing way. Hermione felt safe and loved and wondered how Draco was feeling right now.
Draco sat on the bed trying to get Scorpius dressed, which by the way was proving to be an impossible task. "Little man, you have to hold still or we're not going to be ready to marry Herminee."
The toddler froze in place as he stared up at his papa."I have to marry Herminee," his lower lip poked out, "I really love her."
Draco pulled his son into his lap to put his socks on. "Of course you love her and so do I. Nothing will stop us today from getting married." The boy started to cooperate which made Draco give a sigh of relief. He hadn't gotten much sleep last night with his mind racing with thoughts about today. Then in the middle of the night, Scorp had wandered into his bedroom crying about having a bad dream. He hadn't wanted to wake "His Herminee", so he'd come looking for his papa. From there, having a wiggling toddler in his bed, wanting a drink, and having to go potty...a lot. He'd had to take an Invigoration Draught to boost his energy so he wouldn't look like the walking dead today. It was hard to believe that he was getting married again. There were many differences this time from the first wedding. This time it was his choice whom he was marrying. Next, he actually was in love with this bride. Lastly, he was going to be standing at the end of the aisle with hope and happiness in his heart. He still could remember his wedding day to Astoria. Draco had stood there wanting to throw-up as Astoria in an over-expensive and very fluffy wedding dress that resembled a Meringue pie, came sauntering down the aisle. She'd acted like she was a queen and he should be lucky he was getting her. There had been no love and only dread that day; not something one should be feeling right before they were to be married. They had come to a mutual understanding of tolerance through the years, but once Scorpius had been conceived and born, Astoria had strayed from their marriage bed and not made a secret of it. Everyone in their Pureblood circles knew of her infidelities. There were many women, single and married, that had tried to lure Draco into their beds but he hadn't succumbed to their traps. He'd been too busy raising Scorpius, running Malfoy Enterprises, and working his Ministry job. With his father safely locked away in Azkaban, and his mum living a new life in Paris, there were only a few occasions where he'd indulged himself in a night of sex with a stranger with no attachments. He'd felt very alone in his life with only the love of his tiny son. The night he came home to find Astoria dead and sprawled out on the floor had sadly been one of relief at the dreadful woman's demise. It had also been the worst night of his life at discovering his son's disappearance.
He sighed taking a deep breath as he fussed with Scorp's hair. It wasn't easy taming his curly, blonde locks. Harry was coming soon to take him to stay at his house until right before the wedding. He'd promised Draco that he'd put a movie on for the boys to watch so none of them got mussed up or their women would kill him.
Draco couldn't help but grin thinking of Hermione. How in Merlin's name was it even possible that he was marrying Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age. If anyone back in their Hogwarts days had told him this day would happen, he'd have cursed them up and down and backwards and sideways. The two of them falling in love wasn't something they'd planned on or pursued; it had just happened. Two people that thought they'd nothing in common had found out that all along they'd been very much alike. They complimented each other mentally, physically, and emotionally. They were able to keep up with each other academically and while debating any topic, except quidditch. Even after all these years, Hermione still didn't love going to quidditch games. This hadn't hindered her relationship with her two best friends through the years nor with her intended husband.
"Papa, be done with my hair." His hands came up to swat at the comb Draco was using to try and tame his curls. "I look just fine." Scorp stood in front of the mirror and gave a cheesy grin.
"Yes, you do son. You're very handsome." Draco reaffirmed his son while trying not to laugh at his Scorp's vanity.
"That's because I look like you Papa." Scorpius tried standing taller and walked in a circle with a swagger that was very similar to his father's.
"Are you two gents ready for a wedding?" Harry came in trying not to snicker after hearing the conversation that had been taking place.
"I'm a ready to go and marry my Herminee," Scorp said proudly, while Draco and Harry tried not to crack up with laughter. He never knew next what was going to come out of his son's mouth.
"Let's be off then young man to meet up with James and Albus. They're waiting at my house."
Scorp turned to his dad, "I'll see you soon Papa." Then the cheeky little man winked at Draco and skipped out of the room.
"I hope you know what you're getting into marrying Herminee, I mean Hermione. She can be a handful at times." Harry's raised eyebrows and crooked grin only made Draco laugh.
"It's too late to back out now. Not that I'd want to. She's probably curse me every which way and back again. I'm in this one for life," Draco said.
Secretly he hoped that there was a heaven and that they'd even be together there too. Too much had happened getting them to this day and he'd fight for their right to be happy together forever.
Harry stuck his hand out towards Draco, "Well, here's to great happiness with my beautiful friend and sister. I never would have ever thought in a million years that you two would fit together, but the Gods felt so otherwise. Here you are, a Slytherin marrying a Gryffindor. Just remember and never forget...treat her right Malfoy."
Draco took his hand shaking it tightly and speaking with a quiet voice, "I will Potter. I know how lucky I am. She's more than I hoped to ever have or what I deserve." It wasn't often that he appeared vulnerable to anyone besides his mum or Hermione. Today was bringing out many emotions in him.
Harry grinned, slapping him on the arm, "See you soon. Don't think too much before the ceremony. Your mind will play too many tricks on you. On my wedding day I'd almost convinced myself that Ginny should marry someone better and more handsome."
With a quizzical look Draco asked, "Well, you ended up marrying her, so what helped you through those moments?"
A goofy grin crossed Harry's face, "The moment I saw Ginny walking down that aisle looking so beautiful and only having eyes for me. Well, I was hooked and knew I was making the right decision. You'll see what I mean in a few hours."
"Thanks, Harry. That didn't happen the first time...I mean with Astoria. When I saw her walking towards me I felt like I wanted to vomit." Draco almost felt guilty finally telling someone how he'd felt that day. He'd kept it a guarded secret up until now.
Harry laughed, "If I see you getting green around the gills I'm going to hit you with a stunner, so none of that."
"OK, wise one. You better go. Knowing my son and how he loves to play with the floo powder, he's probably already at your house and the three boys are tearing it apart. I'm sure you recall what happened last time we left them alone too long." It was never a good idea to leave these particular little boys on their own for more than a few minutes. Both men had learned this lesson before in the past and had been thoroughly chastised by a miffed Ginny Potter.
"God help us all if that happens. Ginny will have my balls in a vise." Draco winced at the thought as Harry waved leaving a grinning Draco. He kept picturing Hermione walking towards him. Funny how Scarhead would be the one to give him such good advice on his wedding day. Yes, times had changed much from their Hogwarts years.
OMG! I was so going to have the wedding in this chapter. So sorry about that. It just seemed liked a good stopping place and have the wedding ceremony in the next chapter. Anyhow, I feel so bad that it's taken so long to write another chapter I wanted to get this out to you. I promise you that I have already started writing the ceremony and it will be coming out shortly. Thanks for still reading! Hopefully this story will be wrapped up within the next few chapters and then an epilogue.
