Falling into Destiny
Chapter Thirty-Nine
"You weren't at the match."
You looked up as you yawned, stretching your back. It wasn't until you saw Blaise that you realized you might have been napping when you'd been meaning to do your homework. The quiet common room and lull of the fire had apparently done you in though.
"I was tired, plus I needed to focus on some research," you remarked easily as you moved your legs, placing your things neatly onto the coffee table not far away.
"You're always working," the twelve year old complained with a frown. "When was the last time you went outside?"
Outside like the stone circle. The place where you had almost killed Draco. You could still remember how you felt as you watched the spell building its way up the stones. And the horror when you saw what state Draco had been put in. There was so much about that situation that you were still trying to understand. Which explained the extra books you'd picked up at the library; the ones you'd just put on the table.
"Frown anymore and your face might stay that way," Blaise said in a mild tone.
"It hasn't yet," you tossed back.
"Yes but you're prettier when you're not frowning."
You looked at Blaise for a moment curiously before remarking back, "Pretty sure I'm pretty no matter what I'm doing."
"I said prettier, not that you aren't still pretty when you frown. I just prefer you when you're in a good mood. And sitting around by yourself all day studying instead of going out and having fun isn't going to make you any happier."
"No but it will make me better informed."
"Informed about what?"
"My class work."
Blaise rolled his eyes as he took a seat next to you. He went back to keeping quiet as you started to work again. Within a couple of minutes, more and more people began to slither into the common room. This included some of the quidditch players. It didn't take you too long to notice that someone was missing.
"Where's Draco?" You asked Blaise.
The darker skinned boy shrugged. "He might still be in the hospital wing."
"Why?"
"He fell off his broom," Blaise told you easily.
Fear pricked you harder than you would have expected. You sat up a little straighter and tidied up your books. Anything helped when you were stopping yourself from going to check on him. You had promised yourself that you'd keep your distance for the second time. This time you had the image of him laying on the ground, pale and malnourished, to help you harden that resolve.
"What happened?"
"He was playing, he fell off," Blaise said in a tone that let you know he thought that was obvious.
Given his tone of voice, instead of asking for more details, you shifted topics. "Who won?"
"Gryffindor," one of the older boys said as the sat on the far side of the couch. "Those dramatic fools."
Your face was probably the picture of curiosity as you shifted to look at him better. Blaise finally took a seat in one of the nearby arm chairs as the fifth year turned to look at you.
"Potter raced around the pitch all game as though he was the sole target of the bludgers. And then he took a dive into the supports of the stadium before catching the snitch. Then apparently Lockheart removed the ones in one of his arms so he was rushed to the hospital wing...again."
"Didn't he just get out?" You joked with a slight smile.
The two other slytherins laughed to themselves at your joke. It made you feel like the air had lightened a little. Though just because you were joking didn't mean that your mind was completely taken off of Draco. You wished it had though. Thoughts of him being in the hospital wing brought up unpleasant imagery.

"Finally," you said as you smiled cheekily. "I was starting to think you were becoming an insomniac."
Draco looked at you in confusion. You were sitting on a swing. The ornate carvings on the wooden seat and metal work connection points seemed familiar. As did everything around him actually. Plus the fact that he couldn't make out any part of the castle in the distance was strange.
"Where are we?" Draco asked as he looked at you as though it was your fault he couldn't recognize where he was. "How did we get here?"
Though he still wasn't sure where "here" was.
You gently dug your feet into the grass. It was sun warmed and very green. That was something that should have seemed out of place to Draco given the time of year but he was still stuck on the location as a whole.
"I call it the Dream World," you said easily as you walked closer to him. "It's not a real place...I mean it can be based after a place but this is still a dream."
"This doesn't feel like a dream."
"That's because I'm here. Normally your mind goes over your hopes and fears when you sleep to help you make sense of everything. When I cast my own mind to someone else's dreams, I become a part of them and they become more concrete. It becomes a space that I share with someone else - part dream, part real. It's why I call it the Dream World."
"You're making no sense," Draco gripped. "Stop talking nonsense. Where are we really?"
"I told you - you started to dream. And I connected to you when—-" you stopped as you realized that Draco wouldn't accept that answer. "Okay you know how I can...hear your thoughts sometimes? Well I can be in your dreams sometimes too."
You hoped that was simple enough for him to accept it. Despite the fact that your father had taught you this particular form of magic, you had a hard time finding any references to it in the library. You'd found some obscure passages on advanced legilimency and divination but it was just as vague and unhelpful as the description you'd given Draco. There may have been more information on the technique when your father had been alive but it had been lost or ignored over the ages.
"Why?" Was Draco's next demand as he looked around the dream world.
"You fell off your broom at the match and went to see Madam Pomfrey. I wanted to make sure you were alright," you responded as you got off the swing.
Which was silly. You knew he'd be alright. Madam Pomfrey would have seen to it. The urge to go find him in the hospital wing had been like an itch that got stronger the longer you ignored it. By the time you'd gone to bed, there was no way you could concentrate on anything else. Without being able to concentrate you wouldn't be able to cast your mind into other's heads. So in an attempt to reduce the fatigue you were going to feel you let your mind roam to Draco. Who, as it turned out, had been in his own bed.
"You're lying. Why didn't you come see me in the Hospital Wing if you were so worried?" Draco asked scathingly as he squared off at you.
"I'm supposed to be keeping a distance," you said with a bit of a grumble, glaring at the ground at some point between you and him.
While that was the truth, you hadn't really wanted to let him know that. Unfortunately lying in the Dream World was beyond your capabilities. It was a place of desires, worries, and fears. People like your father could obscure the truth but you weren't very good at manipulating the not-world around you yet. The most you'd been able to do is blur the features of your face in the memories of those you had visited. It helped them not realize you were the one in their dreams but unlike your father you couldn't take on a new face and body in this world just yet. You couldn't obscure the truth that much. As such, the truth came out even if you didn't want it to. Which was why you had admitted to keeping your distance from Draco to Draco.
As he spoke, Draco strode forward. "Why are you supposed to do that?"
"Really Draco?" You asked as you took a half step back into sitting on the swing, hands gripping the rope tightly. "Remember what happened at the stone circle? I put you in the hospital. I don't want to do that to you again."
"So don't," he said simply. "You said it won't always be like that anyways."
"Because I planned to keep my distance," you admitted with clenched teeth.
This was a bad idea. You should have just kept your mind to yourself and waited till morning to make sure he was alright with your own two eyes. You should have suffered through a day of fatigue but no...you'd decided to cast yourself and connect to him.
"You're not doing a good job at that."
"You're telling me," you said with a deep exhale. "Okay. So you're okay right? Because I can't stay here all night arguing with you if I want to function tomorrow."
"Why not?"
You rung your hands around the rope of the swing and leaned back on it a little. Draco kept a respectful distance but he was still too close for you to make use of the swing without hurting him. Not that you wanted to swing, mind you, but it did mean that he was within reach. You knew if you wanted to stop answering his questions you could get him to stop asking them. The boys you had visited so far didn't seem to mind a lack of conversation when you kept them otherwise entertained.
But the thought of using Draco like that made you feel sick. It would have been wrong. He was so much younger than the others you'd connected to. Not to mention the fact that it was Draco. You couldn't do that to him...
"Don't ignore me."
You looked up into his eyes with your own. Draco stared at you as the cyan glow of your eyes entranced him. He could feel a sort of shift in the air as it warmed up to the perfect temperature. And it felt like his heart had picked up its pace a little. Honestly it felt like something very good was about to happen very soon. He just wasn't sure what.
You sat forward a little as you took in the change of the twelve year old in front of you. He'd suddenly gone quiet just like you'd been hoping. His mouth was slightly parted which let you realize he'd started breathing just a little bit quicker. You could hear as he swallowed out of reflex.
You could probably get him ready for so much more...
No. No. This was Draco. He was 12. No.
You squeezed your eyes closed once more and gripped the imaginary ropes so tight that you felt them rubbing your skin.
"I'm not ignoring you. I'm just trying to be a good girl, Draco, and not steal your energy. That's why I have to go, so I can go gather energy from others instead."
He stared at you for a moment as he tried to process and understand what you just said. You leaned forward from the swing and affectionately kissed him on the forehead.
The feel of your lips against his skin tingled in all the right ways. Unfortunately for him you'd vanished before he could ask you to do that again.
