Chapter 40: the party
Sirius
I had agreed with Lydia to wait for her and her parents at the entrance. Lucius and Narcissa had chosen to hold the party on the beach, so a special area had been blocked of. Here and there I saw light flashes of the reporters who were taking pictures of all the attendees. I had noticed Lydia from across the lawn. She was wearing a blue gown, that had a neckline that rivaled the neckline of Lex’ top yesterday. As she walked, I also noticed that the skirt had a slit that revealed most of her legs. It was very daring, and I wondered what she’d had to do to get her parents to agree on this dress. As was the custom, I took her hand, kissed it, and told her she looked stunning. She simply smiled, and I was introduced to Lord and Lady Fawley. ‘Shall we enter?’ I asked Lydia, offering her my arm.
I spotted Philippe Leblanc and made to join him and Selena, Lydia however, tried to stop me, and pulled me towards an empty reception table. Philippe probably noticed, because not a minute later, he joined us, Selena on his arm. ‘Bonsoir Sirius, Lydia comment allez-vous?’ he asked, politely. Lydia gave him a cold greeting, which made me wonder what it was she had against the Leblanc family. A waiter passed us with a tray of champagne, I took two flutes, and handed one to Lydia. Sophie and Diego also joined us at the table, and Lydia grumbled under her breath. It caught my attention that she didn’t join in the conversation, but I paid it no mind. I didn’t notice the other guests, until Selena stopped talking mid-sentence, poked Philippe, who looked at someone behind me. I turned around, and found myself looking at Lex’ parents, followed by my brother, who was arm in arm with Lex. I understood the commotion now, she had looked good before, but now she looked beautiful, like a royal. She managed to look beautiful without showing too much skin or cleavage.
Lydia interrupted my thoughts ‘you have some drool’ she rubbed her thumb over the corner of my mouth, doing away with the non-existent drool. I looked back at Lex, who was just turning her head, I couldn’t be sure if she saw that. Luckily for Lydia, that was the moment when Abraxas Malfoy and my uncle announced the engagement of Lucius and Narcissa, each of them giving a rather lengthy speech.
After the speech they did the name calling for the tables. As I expected, we were seated with my parents, Lex and her parents and Lydia and her parents. That meant that during diner, most of the conversation was ruled by the men at the table. I was secretly glad when the orchestra started playing and we had an excuse to leave the table. The orchestra started playing a Foxtrot, and Regulus lead Lex on the dance floor. Lydia, had been sulking all throughout diner, and she hadn’t spoken to me much, until Philippe made his way over to us. To humor her, I paid attention to her monologue about the music that she found boring. ‘Do you mind if I ask Lydia to dance?’ Philippe asked me. I looked at Lydia, who discreetly shook her head ‘If she doesn’t mind, I don’t see why I should’ I assured him. Lydia grimaced at me, but accepted Philippe’s offer. I was curious about why she was acting this way, but it seemed I would never understand girls. I watched the dancing couples, looking for one couple in particular. As the music changed, I saw Regulus being tapped on the shoulder. I couldn’t be sure, but I thought that it was Tom who now bowed to Lex before taking her into his arms for a waltz. Regulus made his way towards the table, when he spotted me he halted ‘your face looks like a thundercloud, what’s wrong?’ he asked, handing me a glass of wine he’d picked up from a passing waiter.
I said nothing, but kept my eyes on Lex and her dance partner, it was indeed Tom. ‘She’s not his type, you know?’ Regulus asked. ‘Huh?’ was all the reaction I could give him, before Lydia came back, claiming my attention. I led her in a waltz as well, trying, and failing to pay attention to her. How could Lex not be this Tom’s type? And how did Regulus know that? When the song ended, Lydia didn’t let go, so I obliged her in another dance.
I couldn’t find Lex in the crowd on the dance floor, so I kept looking at the tables. Lydia stepped on my toes, I knew that she’d done it on purpose, to get my attention. I apologized to her, and tried to pay more attention to her. ‘It’s pathetic that you keep looking for her at every turn.’ I was confused, ‘has she said anything about last night?’ I asked her, unsure. Lydia shook her head ‘No, Sophie came in before I could bring it up.’ With that I decided to ask Sophie to dance next, maybe Lex had talked to her.
When the song ended, I insisted that I needed to use the loo to get rid of Lydia. I made my way towards Sophie ‘can we talk?’ I asked her, she didn’t seem surprised, it was like she had been waiting for me to come to her ‘I told Lydia that I was going to the bathroom, so probably I should head that way, can you meet me there?’ She nodded.
About five minutes after I had reached them, Sophie arrived, handing me the glass of wine I had abandoned earlier. ‘Shall we walk on the beach?’ she asked, I followed.
She only spoke when we reached the beach ‘you want to know if Alex said something about yesterday?’ she asked, I nodded, taking another sip of my glass. ‘She was confused, she still thinks you don’t like ‘er in zat way. I tried to explain to ‘er that you didn’t want to take advantage of her.’
We walked in silence for a while, Sophie opened and closed her mouth as if she was going to say something, but thought better of it. After the fourth time it got on my nerves so I told her to spit it out. ‘Be careful wiz Lydia, she eez trying to make my brother jealous, and uses you for zat, she does not care eef you or Alex get ‘urt.’ So that was the problem, I now understood Lydia’s earlier reactions. It made perfect sense now, Lydia liked Philippe, and had been jealous when I mentioned that Lex and Sophie got along so well. I thanked her for her information, and we headed back. When I reached our table, Lydia was at my side immediately ‘where have you been?’ she said, swaying a little on her feet. Sophie gave me an I told you so look, making her way towards Diego. Lydia threw her arms around me, and kissed my cheek ‘I missed you.’ Alarmed, I took a step back ‘you’re drunk’ I told her sternly, looking around for backup. I noticed that most of the adults had already left, Lydia’s parents among them, I was on my own. ‘Let’s get you to bed’ I told her, taking her arm to lead her away. She didn’t struggle, which was a surprise. We had made it to the garden when she tripped and fell, pulling me with her. She hit the ground rather hard, and I landed on top of her. I planted my hands on either side of her face to get up again, when she moved her head towards mine, and kissed me. The sound of a glass shattering caught my attention, I looked around to see that someone was making a hasty retreat. When the light of one of the lanterns hit the retreating person, I saw that it was Lex, that red dress of hers unmistakable. ‘Fuck’ I said, getting up. Lex didn’t turn around, it was Lydia who answered ‘oh yes please’ she said. I was disgusted by Lydia’s behavior, and summoned our house elf Kreacher to escort her safely back to her room, before going after Lex.
Alexandra
When I saw Lydia and Sirius making out on the ground in the garden, I was shocked. I forgot that I was holding a glass, and it slipped from my fingers, catching his attention. I turned and ran from the scene, blinking several times to fight the tears I felt coming. They would have to wait until I was in the privacy of my room. I had almost reached the party again when I slowed down. I reached Regulus, who had been in conversation with Tom, both men looked at me in concern ‘what’s wrong?’ Regulus asked. I shook my head, not wanting to break down here, where everyone could see. ‘Can you take me to my room?’ I asked, looking over my shoulder, not wanting to see Sirius anytime soon. ‘We should say goodbye to our hosts, it would be impolite not to’ Tom said, waving to someone behind me. As if summoned, Lucius and Narcissa were there in the blink of an eye and we excused ourselves, ensuring that it was a great party. ‘Can we walk via the beach?’ I asked them, having just spotted Sirius at the entrance. I took off the heels I was wearing, they would only slow us down when walking in the sand. ‘Why does it feel like we’re running from my brother?’ Regulus asked. I shook my head again, I was not going to have a breakdown in front of them. ‘Alex?’ This time it was Tom who asked. ‘I don’t want to talk about it right now’ I told him. They looked at each other, but it seemed like both agreed not to push it. I must have looked very upset if Tom agreed to that, but I was grateful. We reached my room, and both kissed me goodnight before making their way towards the end of the corridor, where Tom’s room was, assuring me to call if I needed anything.
As soon as I had closed the door, I let a few tears escape. I was grateful that Pixie wasn’t here to see me, probably she was tending to my parents. I changed into something more comfortable, and pulled out the pins my mother had put in my hair. I grabbed a blanket and left trough the terrace doors, not wanting to face anyone any time soon. I was almost to the edge of the terrace when I heard forceful knocking on my door. ‘Come on Lex, I know you’re in there, open up!’ It was Sirius. I ignored the knocking, leaving him to Pixie to deal with. As I made my way towards a quiet and secluded spot on the beach, the wind picked up, almost like we were about to have a rain storm. I sat down in the sand, and put up wards so no one would find me even if they tried. When I was sure of my privacy I allowed myself to feel. I couldn’t stop the tears that came, I felt so hurt, not even 24 hours ago, I found out that Severus had slept with Isaura, and now this. I knew that neither boy was my boyfriend, that I had no claim on them whatsoever, but it hurt like hell that they both choose some other girl. It started raining, I couldn’t go back inside, I didn’t want to see anyone, so I just curled up in a ball of misery and cried as the rain soaked me.
AN: Sorry I couldn't post before going to Paris as the chapter wasn't finished. I'm back now, and I finished the chapter.
