The two armies crashed together. Spells filled the air. Harry saw parts of his army leading Deatheater’s away towards the school and the traps set there. As he made his way through the fight, stunning Deatheater’s as he went, he saw Bellatrix and Lucius face off.
“How did you escape?” Lucius asked as they circled each other.
“Did you know that Dumbledore was proficient at wandless magic? No? Well, neither did the fools at the Ministry. He’s here too ya know. He is going to help our Master kill Potter.” Harry had to swallow his rage and continue his mission, find Nagini. Hermione, Neville, Luna, and Ginny followed him and Draco. They all knew that if Harry fought Voldemort before Nagini was killed, they would still loose the war. There was a sudden boom from the school. All eyes turned and watched as Gryffindor Tower fell to the ground, bodies falling with it.
“Keep going Harry.” Draco called as he gave his shoulder a push. The group continued and, finally, spotted the snake. She was surrounded by three masked Deatheater’s who were fighting off Minerva and Severus. They started to close the gap when a familiar shock of red hair stepped in front of them.
“Hello Harry.” Ron grinned as he faced his former friend.
“Ron. What are you doing here?” Hermione gasped.
“With all the chaos that followed the build up to this, several inmates were able to escape. The prison was no longer guarded.”
“You can still turn this around Ron. Don’t you see? Even though we aren’t fighting with Dumbledore, we are still here, in the final battle.” Harry said as he watched his former friend.
“Why should I when you picked them over me?” Ron nodded towards Draco.
“I didn’t. I decided to save him when his family helped me. Why should anyone be forced into something they don’t believe in? Voldemort is still going to die, the world will be saved, and people will get to live happy lives again without fear in a more open and accepting world. Isn’t that what we wanted?” Harry watched as Ron thought about what he said. He saw when things finally clicked.
“What have I done?” Ron asked as he lowered his wand.
“You were blinded by Dumbledore, just like a lot of us were.” Harry said, a small smile forming on his face.
“Will you help us Ron? They won’t be expecting the Golden Trio to be back together. You could be what helps us win this War.” Hermione asked, hope tinging her voice.
“Yes. What do I need to do?”
“Help us kill Nagini.” Harry started to say only to watch in horror as Ron turned and ran full tilt towards the snake. The Deatheater’s saw him coming and welcomed him only to be surprised when he swiped his wand in a slicing motion while screaming the severing charm. Nagini moved, the spell barely missing her and lunged at Ron. They heard a blood curdling scream as Nagini bit him. In a rage, Harry ran for his friend, Deatheater’s falling as he passed. His magic was growing out of control. Behind him he heard a gasp, but he was zeroed in on Nagini. He grabbed her and pulled her away from Ron. He pushed with all his worth, sending his magic deep into the snake to destroy the last Horcrux. He could feel it sizzling, but not fading like the others. Nagini was fighting to bite him when Harry felt her weight lessen. He looked and saw her body falling away, sliced a few inches from where he held her. Neville was off to the side, the sword of Gryffindor in his hands, covered in Nagini’s blood. As her body hit the ground, they heard a heart stopping roar. Everyone in ear shot stopped and turned. Voldemort had felt his last Horcrux vanish and he was ready to end things. The sea of people parted as he made his way towards Harry. They split, the Deatheater’s on one side and the Army of Hogwarts on the other. They made a clearing just big enough for a proper duel. In the background the sounds of battle still raged in the forest and the school. Harry could hear the suits of armor clanking and the screams of those who were injured or dying.
“Ready to die Harry?” Voldemort asked as he readied himself. Harry knew he was going to cast the killing curse. That the wands would battle until one was over powered.
“Terms first Tom.” Harry said, grinning as Voldemort flinched at his given name.
“No one else can draw a wand on either of us. Should one of our wands break, we can take one from one of our soldiers. Should we both die, this war ends at once. We will each have a second for if one of us dies to continue the fight. Sound fair?”
“Sounds fair to me.”
“Oh, one more thing, Albus Dumbledore is to leave the grounds immediately. He was banished when he turned and is not welcome here.” Everyone felt the surge of magic as a single robed figure was flung into the forest. Harry sent a message to the trees, Dumbledore was not to leave the forest. Everyone watch, some in surprise, others in fear. The Deatheater’s didn’t know that this boy was so strong. Harry and Voldemort squared off. Voldemort casted the killing curse and was shocked when a wall of earth popped up in front of Harry, sending the curse into a Deatheater.
“I am the true heir to Hogwarts. I have powers you know nothing about Tom.” Harry tried to stun Voldemort, missing him by millimeters.
“You may be the heir to Hogwarts, but I am a direct descendant of Slytherin himself.” Voldemort threw a violent purple spell at Harry who dived out of its way.
“Then why does the school obey me and not you?” Harry shot a body bind at Voldemort, hitting his legs. Voldemort fell to the ground, said the counter curse as he went.
“It’s because the school know what you would do to it. How you would corrupt it into something it was not meant to be.”
“I would make it better! A true place for greatness to shine!” Voldemort sent an exploding charm straight to Harry’s wand and watched in glee as it exploded. Harry looked up at him and grinned.
“That was my first wand, the one that was the brother to yours. Now, descendant of Slytherin, meet our ancestor’s masterpiece.” Harry pulled Slytherin’s wand out from the holster at his wrist. Harry watched as Voldemort’s face contorted with rage a greed.
“That wand will be mine.”
“You’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers first.” Both casted the killing curse, their spells meeting in the middle. The true battle had begun. Who would over power the other? Harry watched as Voldemort slowly gained ground, his spell was just about to touch Harry’s wand when he felt Draco place his hand on his shoulder. He felt others do the same and before long, every member of the Army of Hogwarts, had formed a chain connecting themselves to Harry. Harry felt the love, friendship, and family bonds. His spell was pushing back harder and harder. Voldemort watched in horror as the ground he had gained, quickly disappeared.
“This is the end Tom. I have reasons to live. To fight harder than you. I have people who love me at my back. You have only those who fear you or want to be like you.” Harry gave one final push and watched as Voldemort was swallowed up by a ball of green light. When the light faded, there was a dead patch of ground scorched black and nothing else. When the remaining Deatheater’s saw that Voldemort was truly gone they panicked. Some scattered, running back into the forest, some just gave up, surrendered their wands and were detained by the Auror’s.
“Do not give chase. Let those who live in the forest fight them. We will round the rest up later.” Harry called. He sent a message to the school that Voldemort was dead and it was to open the floor under all enemies left in the school and deposited them to the Room of Requirements turned holding cell. Harry made his way back to the school, taking in all the details as he went. He saw the dead, but didn’t place faces. He watched as they were levitated to the front lawn and laid out in two rows. There were far more dead Deatheater’s than Auror’s and students. Harry made his way through the school to the Room of Requirement’s. He opened the door and saw the remaining Deatheater’s fighting to get out.
“Your Master is dead. Burned to nothing, a black mark upon the earth. The Auror’s will be taking you in as soon as all the dead are collected.” He walked away and went to the Great Hall next. He sat down in the middle of the hall and dropped into the deepest meditative state he could get and connected with the school. Draco found him like that, a glowing list of locations and numbers floating in the air. He called all those who were available and sent them to the locations. He soon found out that the school was telling Harry where people were trapped. They found several wounded who would have died had they not been found. Everyone worked throughout the night and well into the next day digging up the wounded and dead buried amongst the rubble. The wounded were sent to St. Mungo’s, the dead laid out for identification. Harry didn’t rise from his meditative state for three days. When he did, he found a plate of food and a tall glass of water waiting for him, Draco asleep on the ground next to him. He gently woke Draco up and had him fill him in on what he had missed. Harry was relieved that his side had lost so few, but the few they did loose broke his heart. Ron had died in the hospital from Nagini’s poison. Snape tried to save him before sending him off well before the battle had ended. The twins had been severely wounded and the healers didn’t know if they were going to make it. Lupin and Tonks were both in the hospital. Lupin had lost a leg while fighting Greyback, Tonks was fighting for her life against an unknown curse. There were a handful of students who were dead, every one of them had fought their parent. Draco hadn’t even finished telling Harry all the details before he was out the door. He stood at the top of the stairs and watched people move about doing what they could to ease things fro those who had lost someone.
“Attention everyone!” All eyes turned to him.
“Every single person who lost their lives defending this school, this world we live in, will be remembered!” They all watched in shock as a statue rose where Voldemort fell. It was white marble veined with black. The square base rose several feet before the monument continued. The marble shaped itself into the house mascots back to back holding up the Hogwarts crest. Behind the crest was a set of crossed wands. Everyone watch as the base was inscribed with the name of every person who lost their life defending the school.
“I personally will ensure that they are all buried with honors. They will never be forgotten.” Harry turned and went back inside. They still had a lot of work to do before school could start up again. He looked out the window and sighed. It was snowing.
I hope you all enjoyed the final battle. It took me a while to get this chapter just right. I will be posting an Epilouge that will lead into the sequal. Thank you for all the wonderful comments.
