Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Disclaimer: If J.K. Had thought up a character like Lucky, she would have put her in the first five books. So I guess this means that I don’t own them. I barely own a DVD player and a copy of the first two movies. Try and take them and I will cut off your hand and feed it to my boyfriend’s turtle. Who just happens to be named Mad Eye Moody. And is vicious, and hisses. A lot.
Rating: NC-17, for violence, language and sex. Please read responsibly.
Authors notes. Oooohhh…. many, many thanks to Joy, who seemed to like my character so much that she just couldn’t wait for me to finish it, and begged to Beta it, just so she could read the main story first. Cheeky little chit. Hmm… my kinda lady. Cool beans.
First off: I do not advocate teenaged smoking. Lucky just seemed to scream it though, and as I am a smoker, it seemed to work.
Second: I DO NOT ADVOCATE VIOLENCE PERPETRATED ON CHILDREN WHAT SO EVER. But every good heroine needs something big to get over, and again, Lucky just screamed this.
Thirdly: *sniff* I do not live in either Los Angeles or England. I live in the furthest corner of the northern continental United States of America. It rains. A lot. And the only thing I have to do most days is write. As such, if there are any mistakes pertaining to these areas, that’s why, and I beg your forgiveness before hand.
Chapter four: Snape learns the truth
Albus Dumbledore walked into his office and sat down at his desk, ignoring the younger professor who stood fuming in front of it. He picked up his quill and began writing, before glancing up, amusement in his eyes.
"Yes, Severus?"
That was all that Snape needed to let loose the vitriol in his system, added to by the hour and a half he had had to wait for the Headmaster to finally arrive. "WHY DID YOU NEVER TELL ME I HAD A CHILD?!?" He all but shouted, his teeth clenched, his fists tight.
"What on earth could you be talking about, Severus? You, have a child?" The amusement that should have been in his voice was lacking, Snape noticed.
"I saw her. Black hair, looks just like her mother. Katriana Hunter. They call her Lucky? You know, the American’s seeker." More sneering, even if he knew that it had no effect on Dumbledore.
"Ah. I see. What makes you think she’s your child?"
"She’s sixteen. Serita left me less then seventeen years ago. The timing fits." Snape started pacing.
"She could have run right into the arms of another man. It has been known to happen." Dumbledore sat back, threading his fingers together on his chest.
Snape paused, then shook his head. "No. Rita’s not like that."
"People change, over time, Severus. You know that."
"Not Rita. She didn’t have it in her to change that dramatically." Severus stopped in front of the desk. "And you know that I am right about the Hunter Girl."
"Yes, Severus. I do. She is your daughter. Her full name is Katriana Black Hunter. Her mother called her Ana. She was born August fifth, nineteen eighty. At thirty six minutes after one. I even have a baby picture."
Snape felt his hands twitch. "Let me see."
Dumbledore nodded, and d upd up, walking up the stairs, leaving Snape to deal with what he had just learned. His hands were full out shaking now, and he could feel a dryness in his mouth, and an ache in his throat.
He had a daughter. He was no longer alone in this world. And Rita..... He could have Rita again. If she’d have an old battered death eater like him.
Merlin. Almost seventeen years since he had last seen, heard of, or touched her. When she had left, it was as if she had just disappeared off the face of the earth. A clean getaway.
Too clean. She would have had to have help. And had Black known about his niece, Snape had no doubt that he would not have gone after Pettigrew. Black had been all about his family, and part of the feud between the two of them was the way Severus had treated Sirius’s only sister.
And Potter had already gone into hiding. So Lily couldn’t have helped.
And Lupin had been buried deep by Dumbledore.
Which left Dumbledore. The old fool had helped her to run, then concealed the birth of his daughter for almost seventeen years.
By the time Albus had returned to the office, a small box in his hand, Snape had worked himself back into a fine temper.
"You helped her escape from England, didn’t you?" His voice was low and calm. But Dumbledore knew what really lay behind those words. Severus was feeling lost, cast adrift, almost like a child that has been told that all his dreams were lies.
"Yes, Severus. She came to me, and I helped her go to America. That was when she told me that she was pregnant. Had it not been for her child, she would have stayed and tried to save you." He sat down at his desk. Setting the box on the desk, in front of him, he folded his hands on top it.
"Where is she now? In LA?" Snape began leaving. "I can go to her. Ask her forgiveness."
"No, Severus. She is not in LA anymore." This was going to be the difficult part.
"Where is she? I have to know. I need to see her, to explain." He was desperate.
"I am sorry Severus."
"Please, I know she must hate me, but I have to explain. Please I need this." As the older wizard shook his head Snape’s shoulders dropped. "Why not?"
"Because she’s dead."
Snape froze, and his shoulders caved in further, as though absorbing a body hit. "Merlin." He whispered, his voice broken. "When? How?"
"Eight years ago. She was murdered in her home."
"Who’s raising my daughter then? Is she in a home? An orphanage?"
"No. Rita’s husband is raising her."
"Oh, Merlin." Snape’s voice was even more broken. "She married."
"When Ana was four." Dumbledore watched the spy. "I understand that it wasn’t a love match. More of a business arrangement for Rita."
"Then I will apply for custody of my daughter." Snape’s voice was regaining some of it’s strength. A good sign, or simply the fact that the younger man was pushing the hurt aside until he could deal with it in private.
"No, you can’t."
Snape whirled around, his face full of cold fury. "Why the bloody hell not?"
"Because Ana doesn’t know you. Her stepfather is the only father she knows. How would you feel about tearing her away from her family?"
"She’s my daughter, and I will not allow her to ignore me."
"She doesn’t know you, Severus, and who knows what Rita told her about you, if she even did." Dumbledore stood up, holding the box in his hand. Walking over to Snape, he handed the box to him. "Severus, tread carefully. I have a feeling that all is not as it appears in Ana’s life. There might be hidden pitfalls that you can’t see. That I can’t see. And if we are to protect her from the Dark Lord, we have to gain her trust before we rip her life apart."
"Why do you know so much about her?"
"One tends to pay attention to a student when they turn down the offer to come to this school."
"She was accepted to Hogwarts and she turned it down?" Snape was incredulous. No one had ever turned down Hogwarts; at least not to his knowledge.
"Yes. How could she have not been, when she is Slytherin’s heir." Dumbledore shrugged. "But she chose Unicose over us. Pity, she would have been a magnificent student."
"According to the transcripts sent to me by the American school, she is." Snape looked down at the box. "Was Rita happy?"
Dumbledore shook his head sadly. "Who can say what happy really is. Perhaps she was, in her own way, or perhaps she just survived. Maybe you should ask Remus that question. He was the one who knew her after she left. He is also your daughter’s Godfather."
The bloody werewolf. He knew more about his daughter then Snape did. And yet another person who refrained from telling him about her. That had been the secret that had been in Lupin’s eyes when ever he had looked at him.
Snape’s hands tightened on the box, and he suddenly remembered it. And what it held.
Turning on his heels, without a further word to the Headmaster, he left the office, flying down to his private chambers.
He gently placed the box on the coffee table in the sitting room, and sank heavily into the couch. His hands came up and covered his face, and he began to shake.
He had a child. The woman he loved was dead. She had married another man, and on top of it all, he wasn’t allowed to claim his own daughter.
The scent of Rita filled his memory, and he could still see those amber eyes, flecked with onyx, smiling up at him with love. The feel of her skin beneath his hands, the sounds of her voice in his ears, he almost swore she was there now.
Seventeen years. A lifetime. And she had been dead for eight of them.
Tears began to leak from his tightly closed lids, and he shook harder. Pain lashed at his very soul, and a howl of despair rose in his throat.
He had fallen in love with her when she was in her fourth year, he in his fifth. She had been smart, witty, and bloody beautiful. She had also been Sirius Black’s younger sister. And a member of Potter’s little circle. Despite the fact that she had been in Slytherin, while all the others had been in Griffyndor. Most of her housemates had given her a hard time, but she had simply shaken it off, saying that there was no force on this earth that would make her turn from her own blood.
Lupin had been the closest to her, and the younger Severus had almost been afraid that she would go to him, instead of returning his feelings. Having learned his lesson with Lily Evans, he had refrained form making his own declarations of emotions, and had watched, and wanted, from the sidelines, while Rita shone with her friends.
In the end, nothing had come from his crush in school, and he had graduated, and gone into the service of the Dark Lord, while she faded from his life, but never his heart.
It had been a sunny day in April when he saw her again. She was in Diagon Alley, shopping for the Potter’s wedding, when she had bodily run into him. He had almost brushed her off, with one of his trade mark cutting snipes, when he caught sight of her eyes. Those eyes that had haunted him since he had graduated.
The eyes that haunted him still.
They had ended up having lunch together, and talking about what had happened since school. They ended up agreeing to having dinner together. One date turned into two, then three months later, he had learned the truth. She was Voldemort’s daughter. The product of an affair with her mother, Black’s mother.
Of course, he didn’t learn it from her. But from the Dark Lord himself, who wanted his daughter to join him at his side. Snape had immediately gone to Dumbledore, who told him that Rita needed to be protected. At Hogwarts, perhaps.
Snape had thrown that idea aside. She would never had stayed. So he had decided to drive her away, to protect her.
The words they exchanged still tore at him.
And she had left him, run to America, and had his child. A child he hadn’t known about. A child he wanted with every fiber of his being.
There were no more pictures of Rita. He had destroyed them, to keep their love a secret. And while he still yearned for an image of her to hold in his hands, something tangible, he didn’t need it. Her image, her face, every nuance of her was etched into his memory, to be savored and never stolen, or used against him.
He wondered who had married her, who had given his daughter her name. But it was immaterial.
While he was banned from telling her who he was, he could still spent time with her, get to know her, and learn everything there was about her. He was, after all, the Potion’s Professor. And his daughter had his talent, so much so, that she was going into his field as a profession.
He could mourn for the love he had lost, and learn about the child he had gained.
If only he could protect her, and keep her a secret.
He reached out and lifted the top off the box that held the first clues to his child.
