The duel (albeit a brief one)
Morning sunlihit hit Thea's closed lids, and she rolled over in her bed moaning slightly. She had purposefully slept in this morning, telling her roommates to go on without her. Sandra, a girl she particularly liked, had even snuck her back some food from the dining hall. Thea was grateful but unwilling to attempt any solid food right now, as she was still feeling a little queasy due to Adrianna's curse.
Thea stretched her legs under the duvet her mind sharpening as she became fully awake. Yet again her uncle's words played inside her head. Who knew two sentences could be so terrifying? And that's what Thea was; terrified. Terrified and panicked, and she was finding it increasingly hard to maintain her infamous composure and control. The memory of her breakdown in Snape's office brought a burning sense of shame and disgust in her chest, and she rolled over to scowl up at the ceiling.
Her Uncle's fine script seemed to flash up there on the creamy ceiling; 'Voldemort will wish to see you soon. (No arguments).'
So many things were wrong with those words. Not only would she soon have to face the leader of the DeathEaters, the infamous foe of Harry Potter and all muggles everywhere, but her Uncle knew she did not want to pledge her allegiance to the Dark Lord.
For so long she had been treading the line between a normal young witch and a 'typical' Slytherin. Outsiders might find her cold and occasionally cruel in her indifference, but she knew that she couldn't support the values the DeathEaters held in high esteem. It was of course expected of her to join. Her father was after all one of the most trusted of Voldemort's followers.
Thea choked on a scornful laugh. She was born to follow and support these values, but she could not. Her father's brainwashing had long ago lost it's effect once Thea realised that intelligence was the key to success; not scare tactics, not how pure your blood was, not who you followed.
She didn't want to think about all this. The relationship between herself and her father was already practically non-existent, and besides, what would happen to her if she turned down her offered place in the order?
Shaking her head, Thea threw back her duvet, wrapped a towel around her tall frame, and padded down the hallway to the girls' bathroom.
Later, her hair hanging wet and slightly tousled down her back, Thea walked into the Library. Few students were sitting at the long tables, as it was officially class time. However Thea noticed Hermione seated at a corner table and made her way over.
'Hey.' Thea said as she dropped wearily into the seat opposite. 'What are you reading?'
Hermione looked up, 'Advanced Formulae for Medieval Potions and Brews.'
'Ah, that is an interesting one.' Thea said with a smile.
Hermione closed the mighty tome and peered at Thea openly.
'You don't look so good. Are you feeling better now, or did that bitch really hurt you?'
Thea had to laugh. 'I'm feeling much better. Thank you. Just a little achy, and a little tired. But I'll survive.'
Hermione nodded, seeming satisfied. 'Have you heard about Adrianna's punishment?'
Interested, Thea cocked her head and said, 'No.'
Hermione leaned across the table, excitement and perverse joy shining in her eyes. 'Apparently Snape really chewed her out, and now she has to clean up everyone's potions at the end of each class, for a month.'
Thea raised her eyebrows. Wow, that was a harsh punishment. And poor 'watch my manicure' Adrianna would be very unhappy up to her arms in potions and cleaning fluid. Thea let out a delighted and slightly sinister sounding laugh.
At that moment there was a commotion at the door, and Adrianna stormed in followed by her group of underlings. 'You!' She hissed as she stalked across the floor towards them.
'Do you know what he's making me do? All because my curse went a little off course!'
The usually beautiful girl looked decidedly ruffled in her anger, but to Thea it was about as scary as a disgruntled kitten.
'Adrianna,' Thea spoke in an icy-calm voice, 'we both know that curse did not go 'a little off course'. You purposefully attacked me. And don't think I'll let you get away with such insolence.'
Thea knew her arrogant tone would grate at Adrianna's own bottomless pit of self-worth and prejudice, and Thea was slowly getting that dangerously calm feeling which meant a fight was imminent, and she didn't much care.
'You are not better than me! Sitting here with Mudbloods! Talking to the enemy!' Adrianna spat, her cheeks red with anger, her eyes flashing.
Thea laughed. A genuine, cold and scornful laugh, which made the remaining few in the library turn around and look. Adrianna's eyes narrowed and Thea saw as her hand went into her robe obviously intending to throw another curse her way.
But Thea was sick of simple curses and other empty forms of magic. Thea wanted to really hurt someone today, really feel it as she caused them pain. And so before Adrianna's wand was even fully out of her robe, Thea pulled back her arm and punched Adrianna full in the face.
Thea visited the gym regularly, she had even convinced her parents to build her one, despite the fact that it was a largely Muggle invention. Her punches were strong, and she knew how to throw her shoulder into the action to put as much force behind it as possible. Therefore it was no surprise to her when the 'delicate' Adrianna let out a small cry, before falling to the floor in a dead faint.
Calmly collecting her books, and ignoring the looks of shock on the faces of those around her (including Hermione's, though hers was tinged with a smug look of satisfaction) Thea left the library, pretending that her knuckles were not killing her, and that she was totally in control. As always.
Sitting in Dumbledore's office Thea was disappointed to see that Madame Pomfrey had managed to treat the worst of Adrianna's bruise, so all that was left was a faint pink stain on her cheekbone. Thea had been hoping that the girl would be walking around with an impressive black eye. Shame I didn't even get a chance to see my handy-work, Thea thought, biting back a smile.
'Hmm, hmmm. Tsk, tsk.' Muttered Dumbledore in his usual jolly and slightly eccentric manner. 'Fist fights in the library. How dreadful!'
'She hit me, Professor!' Whined Adrianna, using her best innocent expression that had absolutely no effect on the seemingly oblivious Dumbledore.
Snape however, who as Head of Slytherin had been called, frowned menacingly down on the simpering girl.
'Now Thea,' Dumbledore began, fixing his twinkling eyes on hers, 'I know that Miss.Serucer hit you with a curse yesterday and that you might want to retaliate,' (Thea admired the way he chose not to say she wanted revenge.)
'But we cannot have violence in this school. Is that understood?'
Thea bowed her head slightly. 'Of course, professor.'
A pause, and then Dumbledore broke into a childlike grin of complete pleasure. Thea found herself smiling right back at him.
'Ok. Thank you, Miss.Serucer, you can go.'
Adrianna stared incredulously at the professor as if he was losing his mind.
'Aren't you going to punish her?' she exclaimed in an insolent tone.
'Not under the circumstances, no.' Dumbledore replied briefly, the same happy smile on his face, though Thea noticed how his eyes hardened slightly.
'But. . . ' Adrianna began, only for Snape to snap,
'Miss.Serucer; out. Now!'
Pouting, her eyes spitting fire, Adrianna was led from the room by Snape, who then re-entered, closing the door behind him.
Dumbledore's smile faded into a look of concern.
'Severus tells me you have not been yourself lately.'
Thea said nothing, whilst inside she fumed that Snape had told someone else about her recent behaviour. It was bad enough that Snape knew she had briefly lost control, and now Professor Dumbledore knew as well.
Sighing Thea said, 'I've received some bad news recently professor, but I am trying for it not to effect my work.'
Dumbledore merely nodded wisely, and Thea wondered why he did not enquire further. Her eyes flicked to Snape, but he was watching Dumbledore's face intently.
'If you ever find yourself in trouble,' Dumbledore said, his voice taking on an unusually serious tone, 'any kind of trouble no matter how severe, I want you to know that you may trust myself and Professor Snape. Do you believe that you can trust me?'
Thea thought on this and then nodded.
'And Professor Snape?'
Thea looked up at him and he peered down at her his face without expression.
If Dumbledore could trust him, than she could.
'Yes.' She said.
Thea knew that many thought Dumbledore was a trusting old fool, but anyone with half-decent observation skills could see that behind those twinkling, jovial eyes, was someone far more deep, intelligent and watchful than anyone could ever guess. Thea trusted Dumbledore, because if anyone was the closest to the truth, it was he.
'Good.' Dumbledore said, his voice once more light. 'Go with Severus now. And remember that my door is open anytime.'
'Thank you, Professor Dumbledore.' Thea said as she stood up and followed Snape out of the door, looking back once to see Dumbledore waving enthusiastically at her.
Thea smiled as she walked along the hall. Once inside Snape's office she sighed quietly. Man, this place is beginning to look familiar, she thought none too happily.
'Take a seat, Miss.Carter.'
Thea sat down across from Snape; no soft armchairs this time.
'Of course when Dumbledore said he would not punish you, he meant he would leave that responsibility to me.' Snape explained in a neutral voice, his eyes twinkling with vicious amusement, as if he too was pleased that Adrianna believed that Thea would go without punishment.
'However,' He began, the fingers of his right hand resting against his cheek in long lines, 'Considering your circumstances of late I have chosen a punishment that I think you might find interesting.'
Thea was now listening intently.
'You will see me every other night after dinner to assist me in my potion work.'
Thea's jaw almost dropped. Everyone knew that Snape tested and concocted potions for the Ministry of Magic, and for Thea, assisting him would be a dream come true.
Punishment? Shit, this was a damn reward!
Desperately trying to fight back a satisfied grin, Thea said, 'Of course, Professor.'
Snape smiled and to Thea it looked genuine, then his eyes were hooded once more and the effect was gone.
'You are dismissed.'
Thea left the room with a much lighter tread than the one she entered with.
