Hermione rubbed her ever expanding belly and looked over at Remus who lay peacefully beside her.
“Can you believe you’re going to have a baby?” That seemed to be his favorite question as of late.
“Not me, Remus, we. We are going to have a baby. And you are going to be the best father in the world.”
At that, Remus leaned over and kissed her softly on the lips. “I hope so.”
“I know so,” she said, as she always did. She glanced around their bedroom: the four poster bed hung with white chiffon, the French doors leading out onto the patio, the white walls stenciled with roses, and now the bassinet, waiting anxiously next to their bed. How had it come to this?

Hermione had returned to Grimmauld Place the summer after her 7th year to have Remus teach her how to Apparate. Her test was later that month and she was very nervous. In the past year alone, her life had changed drastically, and for the better. She was engaged to be married and she had a secret. A secret she was dying to tell her beloved, but she made herself wait. Wait until she could surprise him with it.
Remus had thought that after her Apparation test was over she would be returning to live with her parents. Hermione did nothing to dissuade him from this assumption, even after he’d insisted that she stay a couple of days after she’d passed the test, “to celebrate.”
Hermione had just smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “I want you to miss me,” she’d teased.
As she was getting ready to leave, she handed him a slip of paper. “Come with me.”
“Are your parents expecting me?”
She brushed his question aside. “I have a surprise for you.”
Together they Apparated to the address on the slip of paper.
They were standing in front of a row of red brick townhouses. Flowers bloomed in window boxes. A cat next door meowed. Children played across the street. A decorative wrought iron fence stood in front of them. “Do your parents live here?”
“Shhh....” she said, putting her finger to his lips and smiling. Opening the gate, she led him around to the gardens in the back.
The gardens were small and practical. Although the weeds had overtaken the flowers, they had potential.
“My mother had gardens like this,” Remus reminisced.
“Did you like them?”
“Yes. When I was little, I used to help her. I don’t think I was very good at distinguishing between weeds and flowers then though.”
She laughed. “But you are now?”
“Yes, as I got older, and her arthritis bothered her more, I would help her plant the flowers each year and keep the gardens weeded. She’d help as much as she could and direct me as needed. I did it for her really, she loved those gardens. She’d sit for hours in the garden, admiring the flower blooms, inhaling their scents, watching the butterflies and the bees do their work.”
“What would you think about reviving these gardens?” The way she asked him was more than a question; it was an invitation.
“Hermione?”
“Let’s go inside.”
She dug the key out of her pocket, smiling mischievously at him and enjoying the bewildered expression on his face.
She inhaled sharply as he ran his hands along her back while she fumbled with the door. She leaned back against his chest for a moment, eyes closed, breath still. “I love the way you touch me.”
He leaned over and kissed her forehead. “I love touching you.”
The thought sent shivers up her spine. She straightened, giggling.
Opening the door into the kitchen she breathed a sigh of relief. Harry had done well. On the table was a candlelit setting for two. She looked around the room. He’d cleaned up a bit: dusted the counters, plugged in the refrigerator where no doubt wine was chilling. She’d promised Harry a new broom for all his help but knew he’d never accept it. She turned to see the surprised look on Remus’s face.
“Are you hungry?” she asked with feigned innocence.
“Hungry for what, my dear?”
“Food, for right now.”
“And later?”
“Hmmm… later…” her words trailed off, her voice husky. She shook her head and fetched the wine, pouring them both a glass. Raising it, she said, “To us.”
Accepting the glass, he nodded, “To us.”
Together, they drank their first toast.
After seating Remus, she pulled the chicken out of the oven that she’d prepared earlier. Harry had seen to it that it was kept warm for their arrival.
As she served him dinner, she said, “I don’t think I ever thanked you properly for the Apparation lessons.”
Remus smiled wolfishly at that. “Well, it wasn’t exactly all hard work. I rather enjoyed our evening lessons.”
She smiled knowingly. “Perhaps there are still some things you can teach me.”
“Are you propositioning me, Ms. Granger?” Ms. Granger. Mrs. Lupin. She liked the ring of the latter better.
“And what if I was?”
“I’d say you best keep quiet if you’d like to finish your meal. I’m not sure the kitchen table would be sturdy enough.”
She laughed then. “You are too much, Remus.”
After dinner, she gave him a tour of the house, saving the bedroom for last. She gasped when she opened the door. The bed had fresh sheets on it and a new white comforter with rose petals sprinkled on top. Harry wouldn’t have thought of that. That must have been Sirius.
Leaving him speechless in the doorway, Hermione slinked away into the bathroom and shut the door.
When she slipped out, Remus was sitting on the bed reading a magazine that had been on the bedside table. She waited for him to look up. When he finally did, the expression on his face was worth the wait. She was wearing a black negligee which accentuated her body beautifully. As she stepped towards the bed, the magazine slipped absently from his fingers. He groaned as she kissed him and then proceeded to remove his clothes using only her mouth and her teeth, her tongue caressing his skin for good measure.
As they lay together in the tangled sheets, Hermione looked deeply into his eyes. She waited until he recognized the seriousness on her face. She saw the telltale twitch that meant he knew something was up.
“Welcome home Remus,” she whispered. She watched eagerly as the his expression shifted from one of concern to one of disbelief and confusion to one of comprehension.
“Yours?” he said, breathless.
“Not mine, Remus, ours.” She waited, giving this statement time to sink in. “Well, at least after you marry me anyway. You are still planning to marry me, aren’t you?” she teased.
“Yes,” he answered. He laughed at the absurdity of it all as he pulled her towards him, kissing her deeply. “You are a most amazing woman,” he said, trailing kisses down her neck. “Did I ever tell you how much I love you?”
She arched her back as his kisses traveled lower. “You could never tell me that enough.”
“Good, because I don’t ever plan on stopping.”
