Rating: PG, I think. Wow. I wrote a PG story...this one's a bit more...deep, I guess you could say. But...but...it was supposed to be PWP....
Dedication: This goes out to those of you who reviewed...most especially Sorceress Jade and Lady Eclectic. Thank you so much! Your reviews really mean a lot to me. :-)
Author's Note: I got the idea when I was making raspberry shortbread cookies. It was supposed to be something very different...I actually probably never would have finished it, if it hadn't been for the praise on ff.net. I literally read the reviews, and then went and wrote this.
Raspberry Surprise
Ron frowned down at the cookie dough in front of him, poking at it morosely. What sort of detention was this? Making cookies? But that's what Hagrid had left for them, and that's what they would do. He and Draco both had detention for causing a disturbance in Care of Magical Creatures. Even though they were now technically a couple (though only Harry knew that), they still ended up getting into fights. And Draco had made a comment about Hagrid...Ron couldn't just let it go, just cause they were now sleeping together.
"This is stupid!" Draco whined, poking at the dough. "Why do we have to do this?"
"I don't know." Ron said. He really didn't. Hagrid had just left them in his hut, with everything they'd needed and told them to make the cookies. He had things to deal with, but he trusted they'd behave themselves. Apparently one of his newest creature acquisitions was loose. Now they were doing their best to make raspberry shortbread cookies. They had made the cookies all right, now they had to get the filling in.
"Just...make a little hole in the top of the cookie." Ron said, pressing into the ball of dough with his thumb.
"I have to touch it more? It's...sticky." Draco shuddered.
"Then use a spoon." Ron said, handing Draco a piece of silverware. "Now make an indentation in each of the balls."
Draco took the spoon, and the two boys made indentations in all of the cookies, Draco mumbling under his breath the entire time. Ron was actually enjoying himself. Baking was fun. But Draco kept muttering about slave labor and complaining to his father.
"Now we put the filling in..." Ron grabbed the jar of raspberry jam. "Use your spoon...just a little bit..." He felt a sense of pride at knowing things Draco didn't, even if it was only baking cookies. He smiled at Draco's flat expression. The blankness in his eyes and the curl of his lips said quite plainly he did not want to be there and he was not enjoying himself. But he diligently dropped jam into the cookies. Ron spilled some on his finger, and, lacking a rag, licked it off.
"Mmm!" He said, nodding. "This stuff is good."
"You *ate* some, Draco drawled.
"Yeah...it's good." Ron said again, shaking his head at Draco. He continued filling the cookies, tempted to hum as he did so. For some reason, the more fidgety and bored Draco got, the happier Ron was. It wasn't often that he got to flaunt knowledge around. And Draco knew it. Maybe that was half the problem. Draco liked being in charge...well, most of the time. Ron flushed at memories that little thought brought up. Maybe in public Draco liked to take charge, but behind closed doors it was another story entirely.
"Now what?" Draco said. They had finished with the filling.
"Into the oven." Ron said. "Well...on the fire." Hagrid had a hearth with a stone slab for baking. Ron and Draco transferred the cookie sheets onto the fire, and Ron sat down. There was still some of the jam left. They had used it sparingly, just in case.
"That was the stupidest detention ever." Draco said, crossing his arms.
"And it's not over." Ron said, pulling the jar over to him. He had already put his spoon in the wash basin, so he just stuck his fingers into the jar to get some of the jam. 'We have to wait for them to bake."
"Oh, bugger this for s lark!" Draco said, standing up suddenly. "I have better things to do then sit around here twiddling my thumbs."
"Sure you do." Ron said.
"My god, are you still eating that?" Draco asked, sounding disgusted.
"Yeah, I am." Ron answered. "Here...just have some. It's good." Draco just sneered, but sat back down at the table. He glared at Ron from under his silver blonde bangs, and Ron was struck suddenly by how beautiful Draco was. Even if he *did* sneer half the time.
"Come on..." Ron coaxed. He realized they had about an hour to kill, and Hagrid had told them they'd be alone for their detention. He could think of a few ways to put that hour to good use...he slowly licked the jam off of his fingers, gazing intently at Draco, who gave one of his sharp laughs.
"Going to seduce me, are you?" He said, arching an eyebrow. Ron laughed in an embarrassed sort of way. Ever since their little escapade with Harry, he'd become a bit more experimental in the bedroom. He still wasn't sure exactly what to think of that, so to save himself he tended not to. Neither he nor Harry had ever mentioned it again-after a rather awkward conversation that same night-but Draco had hinted at further...interludes, both boys willing. But it was teh conversation with Harry that stuck out mostly in Ron's mind. It had brought up...things...
"Nah..." Ron said, sarcastically. "Why'd I want to do that?"
"Because you want me." Draco said, simply. Ron shook his head, laughing softly.
"Yeah. I do." Ron said quietly. He gave Draco a warm smile. "Now try the jam!" He dipped his fingers in the jar again, scraping them around the sides to gather some of the sticky stuff. He held out his fingers for Draco, who took his wrist.
"Fine." The blond snapped, running his fingers lightly over Ron's wrist. He brought the red-heads hand up to his mouth, and his tongue darted out to lick the red jam from Ron's fingers. He licked slowly, dragging his tongue from the base of Ron's finger to the very tip, before taking it into his mouth and sucking gently. Ron moaned softly, closing his eyes as Draco sucked a second finger into his mouth. Ron already knew the things that Draco's mouth and tongue could do amazing things.
"Mmmm." Ron said, as Draco ran his tongue along his palm. He pressed his hand to Draco's cheek, his thumb running over the smooth skin or Draco's face. It still amazed him that they were together. He still had plenty of urges to snap Draco's neck, but they were balanced by urges to do completely different things to him. And Draco *wasn't* an evil git. Ron had been allowed a few, brief glances into Draco's mind. And that was enough. He supposed it all went along with...everything.
"Whose seducing who here, hmmm?" Ron whispered as Draco nipped lightly at the skin of his hand. "You want some more jam?" Draco only nodded, his grey eyes smoldering. Ron dipped his fingers again in the jar, but this time smeared the jam on his lips. Draco leaned forward, his tongue sliding out to run leisurely over Ron's lower lip. It lapped at the jam, threatening to slide into Ron's mouth, but only just. Teasingly, Draco nipped Ron's lower lip, before soothing it with his tongue. Ron squirmed, already excited. He couldn't take much more of this teasing. But Draco kept it up.
"Like this, eh?" Draco murmured, sucking Ron's lower lip between his teeth. Ron gave a little growl in response, and pressed his lips firmly against Draco's. He wrapped his arms around his lover, and pulled him onto his lap. Draco slid easily off of his chair and onto Ron, wrapping his legs around Ron's waist. The chairs in Hagrid's hut were certainly large enough to hold the two of them comfortably. Ron shifted Draco so that he was more firmly settled in his lap, his hands grasping at the Slytherin boy's back. Ron assaulted Draco's mouth with his tongue, pushing his tongue between Draco's lips roughly, savoring the taste of his lovers mouth. Draco opened his mouth to Ron willingly, his tongue dueling with Ron's fiercely. His mouth tasted faintly of jam, from licking it off of Ron.
They sat there, kissing passionately for a few minutes. Ron loved the warm weight of Draco in his lap, his hands on his shoulders, neck and twined in his hair. Ron ran his hands over Draco's back, his thumbs pressing lightly into the flesh on either side of Draco's spine. He loved feeling the ridges and curves of the smaller boys back. Draco's tongue in his mouth began to caress, lightly and slowly. It seemed Draco was in a tender mood today. Ron enjoyed the gentle kisses, light and soft and warm.
Ron slid his hands around, tracing the now-familiar line of Draco's shoulders. He slipped them down his front, to the heavy silver buckles of Draco's school robe.
"Ron..." Draco mumbled, pulling his lips away and resting his head on Ron's shoulder.
"Mmm?" Ron asked, his hands stilling in their quest to divest Draco of his robes.
"What am I to you?"
Ron recognized the tone in Draco's voice. It wasn't one he heard often. It was empty, and hollow, and completely devoid of emotion. Ron had decided it was Draco's sad voice. Or maybe it was his scared voice. Ron still wasn't quite sure. But it only showed up when Draco was worried about something or bothered about something or feeling very emotional. And that wasn't often. Now...what was Draco getting at? What was he to him?
"I dunno." Ron answered, without thinking. Draco made a scoffing noise, and said something that sounded suspiciously like 'typical'. What was that supposed to mean. "Uh...it's not something I really think about." He said, lamely. Obviously this was important to Draco. "I mean...do you?"
"Yes." That same, dead tone. Ron was really beginning to get worried. He swallowed hard, steeling himself for a serious conversation. Usually these sort of things ended up with Draco getting very huffy, snapping, and trying to storm off. Luckily Draco was on Ron's lap, so that would be hard.
"Oh." Ron said. "Well...what do you mean?" He asked. If he was going ot answer, he needed to know what Draco waned to know.
"I mean what I said, Weasley." Uh-oh. Draco was back to last name basis. He was upset. Ron placed his hands on Draco's back, just resting them there while he collected his thoughts. What was Draco to him? Draco was....Draco. That was all there was to it.
"You're Draco." Ron said stupidly.
"Oh for the love of..." Draco sat up, and Ron knew he was handling this all wrong. He tightened his grip on Draco's back as teh Slytherin attempted to climb out of his lap.
"Draco, don't do this." Ron said, his tone a bit harsh. Draco froze immediately, his grey eyes flashing. Ron set his face in a determined, almost blank stare If that's the game Draco wanted to play, fine they'd play it. "I don't know what you want from me! I don't know what you want to know."
"It's a simple question." Draco hissed. "What am I to you?" There was an insistence creeping into his voice. Ron's panic was rising.
"You're Draco!" Ron said again, forcefully. "I mean...that's all I can come up with."
"I know that...but Draco the what? Draco the lover, Draco the amusement, Draco the friend...what am I to you?"
Now Ron understood. He had never thought about it before. He always sort of thought of Draco as his boyfriend, even though they'd never discussed the dynamics of their relationship. And they kept it secret. And never ever spoke of it. So it was a severely screwed up relationship....Ron realized that.
"Well...you're my boyfriend...aren't you?" Ron knew his voice sounded pathetic. He hadn't mean for that question to pop at the end. What happened to him being in charge of situations like these? "I mean...I know we never talked about it, but that's how I think of you. And...well...." Ron's mind went back, to the one conversation he had had with Harry over it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So....you and Draco?"
They were lying awake in their beds, late after everyone else had gone to sleep.
"Yeah." Ron stared at the underside of the top of his canopy.
"Were you going to tell me?"
"At some point. No one knows. It would be...weird."
"I can imagine. So...are you two a couple?"
"Like is he my boyfriend? Yeah." Ron went on to explain how things had happened. He left out the meeting in the astronomy tower...the details, at least.
"Have you two...you know."
Ron didn't really want to answer, but he knew he had to. He couldn't keep it from Harry, his friend was already hurt he hadn't told him about dating Draco.
"yeah." Ron said. he couldn't blink, couldn't swallow.
"Did it hurt?"
"What? Huh...oh." Ron could feel himself blush. Well, he was sort of glad he had someone to talk to about this. He and Draco never really discussed anything. And it was kind of nice to talk about it. "Um...no...he didn't...I....we..." He didn't know how to say it.
"I get it." Harry said. "I was just wondering cause of earlier."
"Oh. Yeah." Ron was still a little weirded out by that.
"It was fun." Harry said, as calmly as if he had been discussing homework. "It didn't cause problems, did it?"
"Uh...no. I mean...it was Draco's idea...not that I didn't want it..."
"It's okay." Harry said, still calm. "This isn't going to change things, is it? You're still my best friend. And...I'm glad I could share that with you."
"Yeah. Me too."
"Do you love him?"
"I don't know." Ron had been thinking about that for a good long time himself. "Maybe...I guess...."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What?" Draco's cold voice brought him back to the present.
"Well, when Harry asked, I said yes..."
"Ah."
Draco really wasn't adding much. But then. he never did. He usually let Ron do all the talking, staring at him blankly or in a superior manner.
"You talked, did you?" Draco hadn't asked before. He had left the subject of Harry alone, except for a few hints and implications.
"Yeah." Now it was Ron's turn to be withholding. If Draco wanted to know something, he could come out and ask it. At least he wasn't sitting all stiff in Ron's lap anymore. He had relaxed some.
"I'm assuming he's all right with this, then?"
"Yeah. We talked for a while." Ron wasn't going to say about what.
"Did you now." It wasn't a question. "What did you tell him?"
"Everything." Ron said. "I mean...everything from me." He realized that sounded weird. "Why I was with you, how it happened, stuff like that. I didn't tell him anything about you."
"Oh." Draco nodded.
"He's okay with it." Ron assured Draco. "He's happy."
"Happy?" Draco's voice betrayed skepticism.
"Yeah." Ron dipped his head and blushed. He didn't want to say anything....about how he felt. It had only been a few months. And Draco certainly didn't....feel that way about him.
"Forgive me if I doubt...why the hell would Potter be happy you're with me?" Draco voice dripped it's usual conceit and superiority.
"Cause...I told him...stuff." Ron shrugged, dancing around the subject. Even his own mind liked to skip over it. He had only just admitted it to himself, and only late at night.
"Like what?" Draco's voice was like a crypt. Dry, dead and cold.
"Oh you know..." But Ron could tell by the way Draco's eyes were focused on him that vague answers would not be enough. "How I felt about you, that's all." He finally said. He hoped that would be enough for Draco.
"And how do you feel about me?" Still expressionless. It put Ron on edge. Even if he had decided to tell Draco...how he felt, how could he say it to those empty eyes and that icy expression?
"I...don't know." //So much for bravery, Weasley// Ron told himself. He took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. Draco was just staring at him, his head titled back to his chin jutted out a bit. What face was that? But he was obviously expecting more. Ron took another deep breath. He looked Draco strait in the eyes, his hands pressing firmly into the warm skin of Draco's back.
"I've thought about you a lot." Ron said, keeping his voice steady. "I've never...been with anyone before. You know that. So I don't know what it's normal to feel. I mean...in my head, I know...but this isn't in my head. It's real...and it is definitely nothing that ever happened in my head. At least not before we got together...." he took another deep breath. It was always so easy in his head...when he had been in romantic situations in his head it had been far different then anything he had ever done with Draco. Usually he had grand romantic scenarios involving Hermione. And he had been smooth, and suave, and she had fallen for him just like in the books. Then, at some point, he had had deep, secret thoughts concerning Harry. But that was mainly because they were best friends. Again, it had been perfect. There was no stuttering, no stammering, no looking for the right words...and the other person had always responded correctly!
"Okay....uh...remember when we were first together? I mean....the *first* time?" When Draco nodded curtly, Ron continued. "You said there was a fine line between love and hate. Well...I've been *on* that line for a while. I used to hate you...but obviously I don't anymore." This was it. He could always leave it as is. But....what good would that do? He wouldn't stop feeling the way he felt. And all he would ever be able to do was think about how he felt, and how Draco didn't know, and it would eat him up inside... "Now...I think I love you."
There. It was out. It was said very quietly, and Ron had to tear his eyes away. He said it while looking down at their laps, his voice coming out choked and sounding as though it was from very far away. He couldn't bear to look up. Couldn't bear to meet Draco's eyes. He didn't even pay attention to Draco's physical reaction, just squeezed his eyes shut, his throat closing up...
"Ah."
Ah? Ah!?! What sort of a reaction was ah? Ron looked up, his eyes full of surprise and met Draco's stare, which wasn't as cold or dead as it had been. It was back to normal. Ron swallowed, his whole body tingling. He was having trouble breathing, and he felt lightheaded.
"I'm not going to say it, if that's what you're waiting for." Draco said, softly. Ron just nodded. Draco gave him a funny little smile...the same one he had seen in the Tower, that first night. The sad, resigned smile.
"I sort of figured you wouldn't." Ron said. He swallowed hard, trying to get past the lump in his throat. He had said it, and Draco was still there. So why did he still feel so...weird. It was like...well, he couldn't explain it. If Ron were a muggle, he would have used electricity to describe the way his body tingled. Draco stroked his cheek lightly, and kissed him very gently. Ron closed his eyes, wishing the weird feelings would stop.
"Teh cookies!" Draco said suddenly, leaping off of Ron's lap. "The damn cookies!"
They'd forgotten. Ron leaped out of the chair as well. The cookies were turning black and crips, and they were beginning to smoke. The grappled with cloths and got the pans off of the stone, onto the table to cool.
"Well...Hagrid won't know the difference." Ron said, staring down at the blackened cookies.
"Mmmm." Was all Draco said, but he managed to say it in a way that was insulting. Ron let it go. The burning cookies had certainly served to break the tension.
“Well....guess our detention's over." Ron said. "I've got to get started on my Divination homework. God, I hate that class..."
"I have practice." Draco said. The two nodded, kissed briefly, exited the hut, and went their separate ways.
