Chapter Four
Harry, followed closely
by Draco
and Pansy, who stood on opposite sides of him, walked up the steps to
the
entrance hall just as the rain started once again. The girls plus Vince
and
Greg threw up their hoods on their cloaks and ran ahead leaving Harry
and Draco
walking up the steps, in the rain. This time Harry didn’t stop, just
closed his
eyes and let his feet move him.
“You love the rain
don’t you?”
Draco whispered, stepping closer to the ex-Gryffindor. Their hands
touched and
Harry grinned, nodding.
“It makes me feel
clean.”
“That’s what I
thought.”
Harry paused and looked
up at the
taller Slytherin, who looked back down at him.
A smile crossed Harry’s face quickly but Draco caught it.
“Don’t figure me out
too fast
okay? I like keeping a few things from everybody.”
Draco smirked, “Of
course you do.”
Harry rolled his eyes
and entered
the school, closely followed by Draco. The group of Slytherins stood
just outside
the doors, waiting for their leader and his love. Harry paused and
sighed,
turning to Pansy, who smiled at him.
“Will you go with me to
get the
rest of my stuff out of Gryffindor tower? Most of it is already with
Remus but
my trunk, old books and some stuff I wanted to keep safe are still in
the
tower.”
“Of course darling.
After dinner
alright?”
Harry nodded, falling
silent. He
walked towards the Great Hall, Draco and Pansy on either side with the
two
other girls behind and Vince and Greg bringing up the rear. Harry
looked blank,
as usual as he was led to the Slytherin table by the blond and black
haired
girl. A few people watched as the odd group moved to sit down and
silence
remained over the room as everyone ate. Yet, the Gryffindorks still
glared at
Harry as he sat there, head down, staring at his plate, next to Draco.
“Darling?” Millicent
spoke to him
for only the second or third time that day. Harry glanced up at her,
his green
eyes wide and his face almost blank except for the hidden pain deep
down
inside.
“Harry, don’t let them
get to you.
You are stronger than they are and so much better than they are. They
are petty
and selfish and not worth your pain. I know that they were your best
friends
but the way they have treated you this year thus far, is less than
unacceptable. They are the bane of our existence and while they think
they are
doing the right thing I couldn’t disagree with anyone more.”
“I very much consent
with that.
The way the Gryffindors are acting is just a way to prove that they are
not
what they say they are. Brave and courageous my arse. They think they
are so
much better than everyone else and yet look; they turn on the supposed
Golden
Boy without even looking back. Darling, they do not deserve your
tears,” Blaise
spoke up.
“‘You’ll
make your real friends in Slytherin.’ I should have
listened when I had the chance. Thanks guys.”
“Where did you hear
that?” Vince
popped into the conversation. While most thought he was stupid and he
still
wasn’t completely and totally smart, he could string more than two
words
together.
“In one of my many
conversations
with the sorting hat, my first actually, at my sorting.”
“Why didn’t you
listen?” Greg
asked.
He shot a look at
Draco, “I had
just met a person who reminded me way to much of my cousin to want to
be around
constantly.”
Pansy grinned at him,
“Yes, Draco
can be annoying and almost seem fat at times.” Everyone laughed,
including
Harry.
“HEY! That was NOT
funny!”
“When have you seen my
cousin?”
“Like two years ago
when they came
to get you and everyone threatened them and all that stuff. Oh Merlin,
I never
thought I’d seen anyone so fat.”
That brought more
laughter to the
Slytherin table.
“He is the size of a
whale isn’t
he?”
“Oh yes.” They ignored
the looks
they were getting and continued to chat away, not caring what their
lives would
bring them around the next bend in the road. Glancing around at the
rest of the
group, Pansy shoved her hand in the middle of the rest.
“I propose a pact.”
Harry set his hand on
hers and
smiled at the black haired girl, “I second it.”
Slowly everyone
followed their
leads and all the hands were on one another, “I propose that no matter
what, no
matter where our lives take us, no matter how we end up later in life
we’ll
stick together and remain friends. We’ll look towards each other for
help
before we go to anyone else. Pact proposed?”
“Aye!” Everyone grinned
at each
other.
Harry fell silent again
while
everyone around him spoke in hushed voices, “Is my new name darling or
something?”
Vince smirked and
whispered to the
former Gryffindor, who silently reached for Draco’s hand without
knowing it,
“The girls enjoy calling everyone pet names of sorts.”
“Draco dear can you
hand me the
water?” Pansy asked sweetly and Draco did what she asked, handing the
pitcher
of crystal clear water to Millicent who gave it to Pansy. The girls
continued
to chat away about the stuff they had purchased this afternoon
shopping.
“See what I mean?”
Vince smiled at
the smaller boy and Harry shot him a small smile, scooting closer to
Draco, who
dropped an arm around his waist.
Dinner had ended in
this area of
the Great Hall and the only things in front of the seven were glasses
of water
or nothing at all. Harry brought his hand up to cover his mouth as he
yawned,
tired from the day of being fitted. He curled into Draco’s side and
smiled
contently, happy to have what he wanted after so long of wanting it.
Pansy’s soft voice
filled Harry’s
ears, “Darling?”
Exquisite jade eyes
opened to
stare straight at the indigo eyed girl. She smiled tenderly at him,
“Ready to
go?”
He consented and the
group stood
as one, making their way out of the hall. The black haired boy shoved
his hands
into his pockets and wandered towards the stairs to head to the fourth
floor.
Blaise pointed it out of Draco, who stepped back and grabbed Harry’s
hand. They
spoke with their eyes quickly and a gesture from Draco had Harry
walking back
up the stairs to the next floor.
“Where is he going?”
“He has to talk to
Professor Lupin.”
“Lupin’s here?”
The white blond nodded,
“I don’t
think Harry would have made it this far without him. Lupin is his only
anchor
to his parent’s world. Harry trusts him more than anyone. I think they
keep
each other sane.”
The rest were silent as
they
wandered back down to the Slytherin common room.
Up two floors Harry
stepped into
Remus’ room, “Remmie?”
“In here Prups.”
Harry wandered to the
potions room
and poked his head in; Remus was brewing a potion in a large cauldron.
“Hey Remmie.”
“Take a seat Prups.”
Harry plopped on a
stool and
watched Remus work for a bit.
“Gryffindor pretty much
kicked me
out.”
“Albus told me. Are you
okay about
that?”
“I’m perfectly fine
about it.”
“Harry,” Remus’ voice
held a
warning tone. His ‘I’m fine’s has become a famous line to Remus and
personally
the werewolf was tired of hearing it. He glanced over at Harry, who was
staring
at the wall behind him that held the finished potions. Remus took a
moment to
just look at Harry. He looked happier now than he had before but the
black
circles under his eyes were the thing that caught his eyes.
“No, Remmie, I really
am. I should
have listened in the first place that’s all.”
“To whom?”
“The Sorting Hat. I was
supposed
to be a Slytherin.”
Remus was silent for a
moment,
“You wanna know what your mother told me a week and a half before she
died?”
Harry blinked and
silently (as
usual) turned towards Lupin, who was now sitting on a stool. He had a
far away
look in his amber eyes and he was staring right above Harry’s left
shoulder.
“She owled me one random day and told me to watch over you. Told me
that
everything would be okay once I could watch over you and that she would
always
be watching over us. Of course I didn’t know what she meant until after
she
died.” He stopped in his speaking only to start up a moment later, “I
fought
for you you know, after they shoved Siri in prison. I fought to bring
you into
my custody. They told me that I couldn’t have you, that you were
protected
where you were. For some odd reason I didn’t believe them. I only wish
now I
fought harder.”
“It’s not your fault
that they
hated me Remmie. It not your fault at all for what they did to me.
Don’t blame
yourself. You’ve got me now.”
“Only because you
threatened to
leave England
if they didn’t get you out of that - and I believe this is the exact
quote was
- ‘that god forsaking bloody house soon’. That was something huge when
you
stormed in to the office during a meeting with... who was it again?”
Remus
grinned; he knew exactly who it was.
Harry mock glared at
him, “Lucius
Malfoy.”
“Oh yeah. I think old
Lucius is
now scared of you. I mean you looked pretty freaky, barging in like
that. And
then you demanded Albus Dumbledore to do something and what’s more is
he
actually did it. Hmm.”
“I am very much aware
that you get
a huge kick out of the fact that our number one spy is scared of little
old me
but I only came to talk to you to make sure that you are okay with this
Rem, I
mean, you were a Gryffindor and all.”
“I wish I wasn’t. Harry, the people who did this to you don’t
deserve the title of being a Gryffindor. No harm done and no hurt
feelings on
my part. I’m okay with it, as long as you’re okay with it.”
“I’m all right with it,
I promise.
Marauder Honor.”
Remus winked and
ruffled the
Potters hair before Harry hopped off the stool and vanished from sight.
Remus
sighed and dropped his head into his hands; he rubbed his temples and
stared at
the floor. He closed his eyes and hoped to whoever was watching him
that he was
doing the right thing with Harry and the current situation. He hopped
he wasn’t
letting Lily down in any way, shape or form and he hopped that James
was proud
of his son the way Remus was proud of Harry. He was taking this all in
stride
and with his head held high even though it was obvious he was hurt with
what
his thought to be best friends did to him. Isolation? Harry? Ha.
Remus stood and sighed
before
going back to the potion on the counter. Pausing he remembered who his
would be
son was hanging out with all day. He silently prayed that they knew
what being
Harry Potter’s friend meant. Glancing at the potion he sighed, he would
need
the headache remedy when it was finished.
One floor down Harry
wandered into
Pansy, who was waiting for him.
“Ready, darling?”
He nodded and she
reached for his
hand as the group of Gryffindors from dinner walked up the steps of the
stairs,
Hermione and Ron in the front. They froze at the sight and Pansy shot a
smirk
at Harry, who gave her a small smile, it was obvious he was
uncomfortable in
front of these people.
“Come love, let’s go
get your
stuff,” Pansy spoke and Harry nodded as she started to pull him up the
stairs
towards the seventh floor.
They had only made it
to the top
of the staircase on the fifth floor when, “What do you think you’re
doing!?”
followed them. Pansy felt Harry’s whole body tense but did not see it;
even the
hand in hers became a little harder. His shoulders were shoved back and
his
eyes had been slammed close at the sound of Ron’s voice. Pansy couldn’t
blame
him, Weasley had on hell of an annoying voice. She squeezed the hand in
her own
and wished she had taken up Draco’s offer to come with. Harry slowly
turned the
two of them around.
Ron shivered and
Hermione’s
gripped his hand at the look Parkinson was giving them. Even at her
height and
only being two steps above them Pansy made the two Gryffindors feel as
if they
were specs on the ground and dirt under her feet with that look. She
stared
with her cobalt eyes at them down her nose and those eyes were two
blocks of
pure ice. Harry’s face was the same as it normally was, blank, even his
eyes
held no emotion. While she explained to them that they were going up to
Gryffindor Tower to get the rest of Harry’s school things her voice was
snotty
and screamed ‘I-am-so-much-better-than-you’ll-ever-be’. Their
conversation was
interrupted by hurried footsteps and Neville Longbottom appeared at the
bottom
of the sixth floor steps, holding Harry’s weightless trunk.
“Damn,” he muttered to
himself and
made his way to Pansy and Harry. “After I saw you guys leave I
followed, not
you of course but I headed up to Gryffindor Tower.
Ron and Hermione
had been announcing to us all day that you were a traitor and not a
Gryffindor
anymore. Personally Harry, I can’t blame you for getting out while you
could. I
guess they didn’t realize what kind of stuff you could give them.
I’m sorry myself for
not getting
to know you better when I had the chance but you always seemed so
untouchable.”
Neville shrugged, not noticing the smile at the creeping across Pansy’s
face
and the look in her eyes softening, “But anyway back on track, after
you guys
all left I ran up to Gryffindor Tower to get your stuff together,” he
handed
the trunk to Harry, who set it at his feet and looked back up at the
taller
boy, “It was hard cause Ron went on a throwing spree and threw all of
your
stuff around the dorm room and I knew that they would come up and burn
it if I
didn’t do something, so I did.
It should all be in
there. I fixed
what I could, like that photo album of yours and I threw out all the
sweaters
from the Weasley’s and the ugly socks plus all of your old clothes,” He
turned
towards Pansy, “I noticed you pulling him around all day, shopping, so
I
figured that it would be okay,” back toward Harry, “Hope I didn’t get
rid of
anything of importance, it’s all still on my bed if I did. Check for me
please?”
Harry stared at him in
shock
before he nodded and dropped Pansy’s hand to step around the trunk. He
dropped
and popped the latch, feeling Neville drop next to him. He went though
the
clothes, checking sizes for anything larger than a 24 waist and the
shirts for
anything bigger than a small, then moved towards his books and old
school
supplies. Everything was there, including the letters from Sirius and
Remus and
his photo album.
“Everything there?”
Harry nodded and closed
the trunk,
raising himself to his full height he glanced at Pansy then hugged
Neville.
“Thanks.”
“Not a problem.”
Harry stepped back and
smiled
sheepishly at the taller boy.
“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU
ARE
DOING!?” Ginny’s voice filled the air as she pushed her way to the
front of the
group, which had become larger. “Get away from my boyfriend you whore.”
A loud slap filled the
air and a
gasp followed from more than one person. “Call him a whore again and
you’ll be
dead before you hit the ground.”
“Oh and by the way,
this
relationship is finished Gin,” Neville said not doing anything about
the fact
that Pansy had just slapped the Weasley girl, “I’m not an idiot Ginny,
I know
what you’ve been doing with Colin. Well, want to know something? I’m
sick of
it. This is over and if you come near me with so much as a ten foot
poll, I
will hurt you. I’m sorry that I am a bit of a conservative and I don’t
want to
have sex until I am positive I am madly in love with the person, male
or
female, and married to that person. I thought that that could be you,
guess I
was wrong huh? You call Harry a whore and yet you’ve slept with more
people
than I can count.”
Pansy sniggered and a
loud voice
filled the hallway, “What’s going on here?! Students were supposed to
be in
their common rooms a half an hour ago. Granger, I’m ashamed.
Gryffindorks get
to the common room before I make your points below zero.” Draco rounded
the
corner, eyebrow raised in Pansy direction. “NOW!” Everyone scattered
expect for
Ginny, Ron, Hermione and Neville. The former were staring at the
latter. Draco
walked up the steps and stared at the four Gryffindors who remained.
“What’s
going on?”
“Neville brought my
stuff, Weasley
called me a whore, Weasley and Granger tried to stop me from going to
the Tower
and Pansy slapped Ginny,” Harry said before everyone could start
speaking at
the same time.
“Thank you Longbottom.
One hundred
points from Gryffindor for calling somebody a whore and for existing.
Pansy
thirty points to Slytherin for sticking up for Harry. Now shoo before I
make it
two hundred.” The two Weasley’s and Granger ran up the steps.
“Harry, come here.”
Harry moved
quickly into Draco’s embrace, taking a deep breath in. He started to
shake and
Draco slowly brought the two of them to sit on the steps. “What’s his
password
baby?”
“Pans, run down to the
painting of
three men looking like they are up to something. Say ‘Moonstar’ to it
and get
him here now.”
Pansy nodded, tore off
her robe
and ran down the hallway. Less than two moments later two sets of
running
footsteps filled the hallway around Neville, Draco and Harry, who was
now on
Draco’s lap, curled up. Professor Lupin appeared and dropped down to
his knees
in front of the two on the steps. He ran his hands up and down Harry’s
back and
let the shorter boy bring him into the hug.
Neville watched as
Remus moved
away from the two and stood and as Draco slid an arm under Harry’s
legs,
picking him up easily. He followed Pansy, Draco and Remus down the
hallway to a
door like Draco described and Remus asked it to open to the hallway.
The door
opened and Draco headed towards the door with the stag and everyone
followed
the two in.
“Neville?” Remus voice
brought him
out of his shocked stupor. He glanced towards his old Professor, who
looked far
too old for his age, “Thanks.”
Neville nodded and
watched Draco
walk into a room with a lily on it. He nodded towards then noticing
Pansy’s
presence next to him, “Are they together?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
She laughed, “Today.”
“They seem so...”
“In love? I know. Draco
has been
in love with Harry for a long time, too long almost. I have never seen
him care
for someone as much as he does for Harry.”
Neville glanced at
Pansy, taking
in the way she looked, she was beautiful and she knew it but at the
moment she
looked exhausted. She stared at the door that Draco had just entered, a
blank
look in her eyes. Silently she moved towards the couch and sat down
heavily.
Cracks filled the air causing Neville to flinch as the black haired
Slytherin
cracked her back then put her face in her hands.
“He doesn’t deserve any
of this.
He needs to be held him and loved him and told everything will be okay.
He
needs friends and family and everyone he can get. They don’t realize
how much
he needs people around him right
now.”
“That’s why you were so
easy on
him when Malfoy bright him over this morning.”
“Yes.”
He stared at her for a
moment, “Do
you think he’ll be okay with me?”
Blue eyes met blue, “I
think he’ll
be fine.”
“Pans?” Draco’s tired
voice
floated out to them.
“Coming dear.” She
stopped in the
doorway and smiled. No one heard what he was saying, “Of course dear.
I’ll have
it here as soon as possible okay? Good, sleep tight dear. Harry
darling? Feel
better okay? Goodnight loves.”
“Miss Parkinson?”
Remus’ asked and
Pansy glanced at him, “Tell the others that they are more than welcome
to come
up here. Actually, I’d feel better if they did stay here tonight. You
too
Neville.”
That night, Millicent,
Vince,
Greg, Blaise, Neville, Pansy and Draco all stayed in the same place. It
remained that way until the end of school.
Life went on as normal
after the
incident. Harry chose to ignore it and ignore them but what they said
to him,
what they did to him, still rung in Draco’s ears and he promised
himself that
they wouldn’t get away with it. He wouldn’t let someone so petty hurt
Harry and
not suffer the consciences of it. The Slytherins watched as Harry
became Harry
again, slowly but surely. Still, he didn’t speak as much as he had used
to,
smile in public as much as he used to and he never played Quidditch
again. It
took a lot to gain his trust and for Neville even longer. The only
people he
really trusted were Draco, Remus and Pansy.
Graduation came and
went and
everyone remained strong in their separate relationships. Harry gave Remus Grimmauld Place and his best friends’ son
back
while Remus shocked Harry by telling him about his secret relationship
with Severus.
Pansy and Neville started to date and moved into a large apartment in London with
Blaise and
Greg while Millicent and Vince had their own. Fred and George had
settled down,
Fred with Lee Jordan and George with Katie Bell and the four of them
shared a
large apartment. Many felt sorry for Katie. Luna had oddly gotten
together with
Oliver Wood. She was his main supporter at Quidditch games and the two
had
married soon after the girl had entered her seventh year as Head Girl.
She was
still in school while Oliver visited all the time. They were compatible
for
each other so everyone was happy for them.
Draco and Harry, well
that was a
different story. Their love only grew stronger everyday, every second
they
spent with each other and they jumped places, sometimes staying at Grimmauld Place with Remus and Severus, mostly
at Malfoy
Manor with Lucius and Narcissa. It had taken Lucius a while to get used
to the
fact that his son was gay and in love with his former ‘masters’
greatest foe
and murder but he had and pulled Harry close after finding out about
the small
young man’s childhood. They still had their moments but with Narcissa,
who
dotted on Harry, and Draco with his protective nature, neither had
anything to
worry about.
Still, Rain calmed
Harry and everyone
slowly grew used to finding him near a window when it was raining. His
blond
lover helped the black haired short man in every way he could, mostly
by
performing a spell that made rain sounds. Nightmares never were a
problem.
At the moment it was
around Halloween
- the first for many as real adults - and everyone was curled up, under
thick
blankets with hot chocolate or coffee near the fire in one of the
larger Malfoy
living rooms. Four huge, fluffy couches sat in the room, occupied by
couples.
Blaise and Greg shared the longest and biggest one with Millicent and
Vince
while Narcissa and Lucius and Harry and Draco took up two of the
smaller ones.
Pansy, Neville, Luna and Oliver shared one, with one blanket. Severus
and Remus
were on the floor, under the blanket Harry had gotten Remus. He had
loved the
blanket the first time he had seen it and used it all the time, taking
it with
him when he came to visit his son at Malfoy Manor. They were near the
fire and
looked fast asleep. Fred and Lee were curled up, leaning against the
largest
sofa with George and Katie close by. Silence was the only noise,
besides the
fire of course, that covered the people in the room.
In the distance, sounds
of rain
hitting windows started up and Draco felt Harry relax instantaneously
in his
embrace. The smaller young man was seated between Draco’s long legs,
his back
to the blond’s front. He was in sweatpants and one of Draco’s large
sweaters.
The small man spun in the dome of blankets and wrapped his arms around
his
lover’s waist, resting his head on the hard chest near his heart.
Draco smiled at him and
tried to
ignore the look that his mother was currently giving him. Their eyes
caught and
she stared at him intently, telling him to do what he had wanted to do
for a
long time. He rolled his eyes at her and she grinned, triumphant.
Waiting was
the hard part, Draco realized as he let his love keep his arms around
his
waist. Harry finally shifted and Draco plunged his hand into the
cushions on
the couch, opening the object he was looking for and pulling something
out of
it. His hand closed tightly around it as he nudged Harry’s, which
opened before
he slipped the object on. A look of confusion filled Harry’s face and
he pulled
his hand out of the blankets.
“Draco, what is this?”
“What does it look
like, love?”
“A ring.” That gained
everyone’s
attention, even the still half asleep Remus and Severus.
“Good job, points to
you.”
“Draco.” A warning.
“Yes, love?”
“What’s it for?”
“What do you think it’s
for?”
“Stop answering my
questions with
questions. Now, what is the ring for?”
Draco grinned, “I want
you to
marry me.”
Harry froze and
blinked, “Why?”
Amusement flared in
silver eyes,
“Why? Oh I don’t know, maybe because I love you?”
Emerald met silver and
everyone
around them held their breaths. A smile covered Harry’s lips and he
leaned up
to kiss his lover, laughing as he did so accepting the proposal and the
love he
knew Draco would shower him with.
