Chapter 4: The
First Day
Breakfast was a strained
occasion. Hermione was quiet and was obviously frustrated about
something. Ron and Harry gently tried to get it out of her, but she
was not going to let anything slip. Ginny thought she recognised the
signs but decided it would be best not to try and discuss it when
Hermione so clearly didn't want to. Besides, this was Hermione, she
was probably stressed about lessons or exams or Head Girl stuff and
not at all what Ginny had thought. The timetables came around and Ron
and Harry both groaned at the inevitably bleak days they had with all
their worst subjects. Hermione focussed on her timetable, appearing
to be soaking it all in, memorising every inch of it. To her though,
the page was a swirl of lines and fudged letters. She stared at it
with her mind firmly fixed on her dreams. Suddenly she looked up and
turned to find Malfoy at the Slytherin table, he was sat with the
usual cronies, but he seemed detached from them and a moment after
her eyes found him he looked up, straight at her. She whipped back
round. "He knew exactly where I was." She thought. "He'd
already looked for me and found me and knew where I was sat. So
what?" She snapped silently. "Probably just to purge the
hideous memory of being so close to a mudblood like me last night,
disgusted with himself. He just wanted to confirm how awful I am to
him." She gathered her things quickly and stood up to leave.
"I'm off. There's something I need to do before Transfiguration.
See you there." and with that she was off at a brisk walk, not
even glancing at Malfoy on her way past the end of the Slytherin
table.
She walked quickly to the
owlery and looked out of one of the huge, glassless windows over the
grounds and across the lake. An owl landed on her shoulder and hooted
softly in her ear, she turned to see the striking white feathers of
Hedwig. "I don't have a letter for you, I don't have anyone to
write to." Hedwig looked into her eyes and nuzzled her head into
Hermione's cheek. "I have to get over this. It's just a minor
hiccup to the start of the year, once classes start everything will
go back to normal." With that she gave Hedwig a quick stroke and
moved to the door, Hedwig pushed off and flew up into the dusty
beams. Hermione practically ran to Transfiguration to get there on
time. As she arrived her classmates were just filing into the room,
Professor McGonagall was already in place at the front of the
classroom. Hermione took a seat next to Harry and got her things out
of her bag.
"Are you ok?"
Harry whispered, she nodded and gave him a reassuring smile. It was
clear once the lesson started that this year was going to be very
hard work, McGonagall gave them a speech much like the one two years
earlier about their OWLs, this time about their NEWTs. Some of the
tasks they were told they would be attempting made Harry and Ron
visibly nervous, Hermione grinned with excitement, finally something
that might challenge her, especially the more advanced Conjuring
spells. The rest of the day passed normally, each teacher giving the
same old speech about the importance of this year.
Hermione had a free
period at the end of the day, in which she had arranged to meet
Justin in the library. She arrived and looked around for him,
checking the aisles as well. He wasn't there yet, so Hermione sat
herself at a spare desk and got out some homework to be getting on
with. A few minutes later, among the gentle whispers of students busy
working and gossiping under their breath, Justin entered, looking
flustered.
"Sorry. Mad day."
He sat down opposite her and stared at the desk.
"Are you alright?"
Hermione asked, tentatively.
"Yeah, just, I don't
know, Malfoy was just in the entrance hall and he was acting weird."
"Weird? In what
way?" Hermione asked, stunned.
"He cornered me, he
knew I was on my way here and told me it was totally out of order
that two, well, muggle-borns were head boy and girl. But he wasn't so
polite." Hermione's mouth dropped open. "He said I should
watch my back."
"Oh my god. That
little bastard. Maybe we should tell Dumbledore? I mean he can't just
go around the place threatening people like that." Justin looked
uncomfortable and a little bit scared.
"No, it's not worth
it. He's all mouth really." Hermione nodded and smiled
reassuringly. They got down to business, sorting out dates for
prefect meetings and a timetable for getting their leaving party
arranged in good time.
"McGonagall said
that previous seventh years have just thrown something together last
minute, but there's no reason why we can't organise something really
special if we want to and it doesn't distract us or anyone else from
our NEWTs." Hermione raved. After nearly an hour they decided to
call it a day. Justin set off to meet some friends from their lessons
and Hermione decided to amble down to the entrance hall in case Harry
or Ron were there. As she turned the corner onto the final set of
stairs the familiar red heads of Ron and Ginny popped out of the
small crowd of people heading for dinner. She made her way over to
them smiling, determined to rid all signs that anything had been
bothering her.
"Hi Hermione."
Ginny beamed at her, Ron looked sheepishly at the floor.
"What?"
Hermione asked, "What did I miss?" She probed.
"Oh nothing."
Ginny shook her head, "Shall we go in?" She turned without
waiting for an answer and set off toward the Gryffindor table. Ron
and Hermione followed slowly.
"So, what did I
miss?" She jokingly teased.
"Nothing." Ron
snapped, seeing her stunned expression he quickly softened, "She
was telling me stuff about her and Harry that I just don't want to
know. That's all. I just don't want to think about it." He
stumbled his way through the words and Hermione could tell he wasn't
being entirely truthful.
"Ok." She
nodded, deciding it was best to drop it. They sat themselves opposite
Ginny and a few minutes later Harry joined them, kissing Ginny as he
sat down. "Hard day?" Hermione asked Harry, he rolled his
eyes and began piling food onto his plate.
"Double potions this
afternoon. Two hours of Snape and his criticism. You were very wise
not to take it as a NEWT Ron."
"I know." Ron
answered, grinning through his mashed potato.
"I'm thinking about
a career change. Who wants to be an Auror anyway? Too bloody
dangerous." Ginny patted his leg reassuringly, Hermione looked
at him earnestly,
"Harry, it'll be
worth it. It's all you've ever wanted to do. Anyway, Snape wouldn't
have accepted you into his class if he really thought you weren't up
to it. You showed him with your OWL result. He's just bad at keeping
his personal feelings out of the classroom. Very poor teaching skills
if you ask me."
"Yeah," Harry
grinned, "You'll make a much better teacher. Think of all the
homework you'll get to set just so you have lots of marking to do!"
Ron laughed and sprayed half-chewed food all over the table, causing
Harry to laugh out loud and Ginny to squeal and pull away in disgust.
Hermione shook her head and tucked into her food. A calm feeling
washed over her, the first such feeling since she'd got back to
Hogwarts. Everything felt normal again and she giggled inside at her
own foolishness.
As the four of them joked
and laughed through dinner Ron was increasingly aware of Hermione's
knee against his. He kept up pretences admirably, all the while
feeling stirrings he'd been hiding for the last three years growing
stronger in his belly and his trousers.
