Chapter 3: Sleeping Dragons
Harry sat in the head office
staring into a cup of tea. Mrs. Weasley,
Tonks, and Hermione had arrived not long after Eris flooed away. He still could not understand why she
ran. Wasn’t she just as happy as he was
to realize she had family? He glanced up
at the silver haired witch who had been his twin’s guardian, Madam Prince. She seemed very kind and was obviously
devoted to Eris. Perhaps his sister was
afraid she would have to give up this mother figure.
“But I don’t understand something,” Mrs.
Weasley was saying. “Why did the poor
girl run off like that?”
Harry eyed Madam Prince with
interest as the witch frowned thoughtfully.
“She has known this was coming for a while now. Even if…even if Albus had not passed away we
planned to reintroduce her to Harry and wizarding Britain
once she reached her majority. She has
wanted to come out of hiding for some time now, and once she was an adult I could
not force her. It made sense to agree
with her wishes.”
“Why was she afraid to let me touch her,”
Harry asked in a flat tone. It hurt…gods
it hurt to feel like his sister was rejecting him.
Madam Prince gave him a sympathetic
look. “She’s afraid…well I guess I can’t
know for certain, but I think she’s afraid of making a commitment to you. Eris is used to being relatively detached
from the world. I am the only person who
she has known for her entire life. She
only began attending school two years ago and I sent her to America
for that. She has friends there, but she
holds them at arms length. There were
plenty of tutors in and out of the manor, but I switched them often using
different excuses for what Eris was doing living with me.”
Harry was glad for the
information, but confused as to how it answered his question. “But why wouldn’t she let me touch her? I just wanted to hug her so badly. I felt like I was being pulled to her.”
Madam Prince nodded with a knowing
look. “Your magic was drawing you
together. Touching would have resulted
in a complete recognition. And…well
magic aside, it has been a long time since Eris willing let anyone but me touch
her freely.”
It all
seemed so sad. Harry was glad that his
sister was able to grow up in a home where she was wanted, but what good was
that if she was all alone? It was almost
no better than the situation he had been in.
He was just about to question the older witch further when a loud crash
erupted from the fireplace. His eyes
grew wide as he recognized Eris tumbling out of the green flames, her hair wild
and blood smudged on her face. She was
pulling someone along with her but the figure was covered in so much blood that
he could not even tell if it was a man or a woman.
“Eris, what happened?” Madam Prince leapt to her feet and ran to the
girl’s side. Harry followed closely in
her wake, as did Remus.
Eris looked up with tears in her
eyes. “Felicity, its Draco.”
Harry froze. Everyone else continued to bustle around him,
but he could not move a muscle. How in the
hell did his sister know Malfoy? More
importantly, what had been going on that she was forced to carry his mangled
body to Hogwarts? He shook his head and
focused back in on the conversation around him.
“How did he get like this, Eris,” Remus asked
softly. He was kneeling beside her and
Draco, checking the boy over. Felicity
had moved behind Eris and was rubbing circles on her back trying to calm her
down. Professor McGonagall had
disappeared, most likely to run and fetch Madam Pomfrey.
“I…I don’t know for certain, but the dark mark
was in the air.” Harry watched as a
tremble went through the room. “I was
only home for a few minutes and I heard an explosion out on the grounds. The elves tried to keep me inside…but I
peeked out to try to see what was happening.
I could see wayward spells flying every where.”
“How do you know Malfoy,” Harry asked
softly. He bowed his head sheepishly
when Remus shot him a sharp look. It was
obviously a bad time for that question.
Luckily, Eris continued as though she had not heard him.
“When I got to him there was no one in
sight. I…oh god…I could barely recognize
him.” Eris paused and took several raspy
breaths. Harry desperately wanted to be
the one holding her. She was his sister,
it just seemed like it would be the right thing to do. “I cast a stasis charm on him and levitated
him to floo here.”
Remus was nodding and smiling
encouraging at the girl. “You did very
well, Eris.”
“Why did this happen to him,” Eris asked in a
whisper. She was gently brushing bloody
strands of blond hair from Malfoy’s face.
Harry felt his stomach clench at the thought of his sister liking the
ferret more than him.
Madam Pomfrey burst into the room
then. “Stand aside, stand aside! I need to inspect the boy and get him to the
infirmary.
Soon the
small party was rushing through the corridors with the mediwitch in the
lead. Once in the infirmary, Malfoy was
laid out onto a bed and Madam Pomfrey drew a curtain around him. Professor McGonagall, Madam Prince, and Eris
remained with the mediwitch to assist and Harry was left standing there
contemplating his sister’s relationship with his nemesis.
A gentle
hand touched his arm and Harry turned to see Hermione gazing at him in with
concern. “Are you all right, Harry?”
He shook his head. “How does she know him? Why would he go there for help? That must be why he was there. It can’t have been a coincidence.”
“Madam Prince is a pureblood,” Hermione said
matter-of-factly. “Perhaps Draco and
Eris knew each other from before school.”
Harry furrowed his brow. “How do you know she’s a pureblood?”
“Honestly, Harry,” Hermione said with a
frustrated sigh. “Do you forget everything
I tell you this quickly? Prince is
Snape’s, mother’s surname. She was a
pureblood, so it makes sense that Madam Prince is also a pureblood and possibly
a close relative.”
Harry liked this less and
less. First, his sister has some sort of
connection to Malfoy and now there was a possibility that some relative of
Snape’s was her guardian. Speaking of
Snape… “Wasn’t the git supposed to be
protecting Malfoy? How did he end up
like this?”
Hermione shook her head
sadly. “I don’t know, Harry, but it’s
just awful. If they shot the dark mark
into the air then they must have assumed he died. From the looks of him, I would have thought
the same.”
Trying to pull himself together,
Harry focused on the condition Malfoy was in.
Obviously Voldemort was displeased with the junior Death Eater for
failing to kill Dumbledore. The fact
that the wizard was dead any way did not seem to matter. Perhaps the stupid ferret would see the light
now.
Professor McGonagall emerged from
behind the curtain. Madam Prince and
Eris were close behind. Harry bit his
lip when he caught sight of his sister’s face.
She was deathly white and her eyes were wide and watery. Madam Prince had her arm wrapped securely
around the girl and Harry got the impression that Eris would topple over
without the support.
“How is he, Minerva,” Remus asked softly.
The
elderly witch released a heavy sigh.
“He’s in rough shape, Remus.
Poppy says he will probably be asleep for several days, but he should
come through whole. There may be some
scarring.”
Eris whimpered when this was said
and Harry had to once again suppress the urge to rush to her side and comfort
her. Her guardian was helping her and
that would have to be enough until she was comfortable with him.
___________________________________________________________________
Four days had past since Eris
rushed Draco back to Hogwarts and the young wizard was still in a fitful
sleep. She found herself crying often
and had to constantly remind herself that she had basically ordered Snape to do
this to him. The Potions master was still
invisible and tended to stand as far away from Draco’s bed as possible. Eris barely dared to acknowledge his presence
even when they were the only ones in the room.
She found it easy to sneak him food.
The man obviously was not going to do it himself. He never left the infirmary and his eyes
seemed glued to Draco’s limp form. It did
not take Legilimency to realize that he felt horrible about hurting the boy,
but he had done a bang up job of it nonetheless.
Eris leaned over and studied
Draco’s face as she had many times over the last few days. A thin, white scar trailed down the left side
of his face. She knew there were several
more on his chest and legs. They were
barely noticeable, but she knew they were there and that was all that mattered. It often crossed her mind that Draco may be
very angry for those scars, slight though they were. He had not been particularly vain when they
were young, but few seven-year-olds rarely were. If Lucius Malfoy was any indication then Eris
might be in trouble or Snape depending on who Draco decided to blame. Perhaps it would be beneficial to omit
certain bits of information when she returned his memories.
The blond
wizard released a low groan then and Eris leapt out of her chair. She saw Snape tense out of the corner of her
eye. “Draco? Draco, can you hear me?”
The boy
swallowed and licked his lips.
“Wa…water.”
Eris grabbed a glass of water and
held it close to her friend’s lips.
“Drink slowly. You’ve been
unconscious for four days.”
His eyes fluttered open then and
he blinked rapidly. “Eris?”
She
nodded and smiled. “You know, Draco, if
you wanted to get my attention there are easier ways than nearly dieing on my
doorstep.”
Draco began to chuckle, but it
quickly turned into a dry cough. Eris
set the water glass down and helped the boy move into a partial sitting
position, propping extra pillows behind him.
“It wasn’t exactly part of the plan.”
“I have to get Madam Pomfrey,” Eris said
softly. She gave his hand a squeeze and
then ran for the mediwitch’s office. As
she paced Snape she offered a slight smile, but his only reply was a curt
nod. “Madam, Draco is awake!”
“Goodness!” Madam Pomfrey hurried from the office and
Eris followed closely, her smile growing with each moment.
Several hours later Eris found
herself surrounded by the same group that had witnessed Draco’s bloody arrival
four days before. Two aurors had joined
the ranks as well as the school’s current potions master, Horace Slughorn. They meant to question under
Veritaserum. For his part, Draco had
remained calm and quiet, but clung to Eris’ hand. It had not escaped her notice that her friend
and her brother were constantly exchanging glares. She should have known that it would be too
much to ask that they were at least civil.
Apparently, the pair had a rocky history, and that seemed to be putting
it lightly.
“Now, Draco, we’re just going to have
Professor Slughorn administer the Veritaserum and then we’ll ask you a few
questions,” said the pink haired auror.
Eris had missed her name, but she seemed cozy with the Lupin so she
supposed she would meet her properly eventually.
The plump
potions master stepped forward with a vial of clear liquid. He placed three drops on Draco’s tongue and
then moved aside so that the female auror could come to the side of the bed.
“What’s your name,” she asked in a firm tone.
“Draco Lucius Malfoy.”
“Are you a Death Eater?”
Eris bit the inside of her cheek
and stared intently at her friend. She
hoped he would give the witch the answers she wanted. The blonde’s nose crinkled for a moment. “I was, but I failed my mission and now I’m
an outcast.”
The pink
haired witch was scribbling down Draco’s answers. Eris glanced over the auror’s shoulder and
tried to gauge the reactions of the rest of the group. “What was your mission?”
“I was supposed to kill Professor Dumbledore.”
“Why did you fail?” Eris held her breath. She didn’t have any idea why Draco had not
killed the old wizard, but she knew the answer could be the difference between leniency
and Azkaban.
“I couldn’t kill him. It just didn’t feel right,” Draco said in a
flat tone. The potion kept his voice
emotionless and his face lax, but Eris could see the sadness in his eyes.
Harry butted in then and Eris’
eyes widened when she saw the fury etched on her twin’s face. “Why would you agree to do something like
that in the first place?”
Lupin grabbed the boy and pulled
him back, but Draco answered anyway. “He
would have killed me. He would have
killed my mother. I don’t know if he can
reach my father, but I’m sure he would kill him too. I felt like I didn’t have any choice.”
The two aurors conferred in whispers for a moment and Eris tensed
when the witch glanced her way. “Just a
few more question, Draco. Who attacked
you?”
“I couldn’t see anyone. It was like they were invisible.”
“Did you hear any voice?”
“No.”
“Do you know where Professor Snape is?”
Draco frowned and Eris silently
pleaded for her mental tampering to hold up.
“I don’t know for certain. He…he
took me to a house and then he left me in a field.”
Everyone
in the room seemed confused by this. “He
didn’t take you back to You-Know-Who?”
“No.
He said that the Dark Lord would be sure to kill me for my failure. He said I needed to find somewhere safe to
hide and he would say I ran away.”
Harry and his two friends began to
whisper frantically amongst themselves then, but Eris tried to ignore
them. “One more question. Why did you go to Prince Manor for help?”
Eris cursed silently in her
thoughts. She should have thought of
this. There was no getting around it;
Draco was going to tell them about the oath.
“Eris and I swore an Oath of Protection when we were small. I knew she would help me.”
Felicity and Mrs. Weasley gasped
and Eris squeezed her eyes shut. She was
going to get an earful over this later and she doubted it would be pleasant.
“Okay, those were all the questions the
Ministry wanted asked.”
“Just a second, Tonks,” Harry said in a harsh
tone and pushed his way to the bed.
Ah! So that’s her name.
Harry glared hard at Draco for a
moment before speaking. “Are you willing
to help the side of the light? Are you
ready to fight against Voldemort?”
Eris tensed again, but Draco’s
answer eased her fears. “I’m willing to
do whatever Eris thinks is right.”
Eris looked to her brother and
their eyes met for a moment. He regarded
her thoughtfully and then nodded. It
seemed that he trusted her judgment and Eris spared a moment to wonder what
fool had failed to teach him caution.
The red headed boy muttered something that sounded suspiciously like
‘Slytherin’ and Eris suppressed a smirk.
Yes, Draco’s answer was very Slytherin with the way he placed all the
responsibility on her. Of course, it
took a great deal of trust to just hand over control like that. With the potion factored in, she knew he was
completely sincere.
The aurors left for then to deliver the results of the
interrogation and the rest of the group were talking amongst themselves. Eris glanced over to where Snape was
standing. There was a thoughtful
expression on his face and she hoped that they would be able to return to the
manor soon where she could speak to him without fear of being discovered. He noticed her watching him and his
expression changed. It shifted to
something cold and calculating. She knew
that he was thinking of the way she had removed the incriminating memories from
Draco’s mind. It took powerful
Legilimency to do such a thing and a rather delicate touch to do so without
damaging the victim. With the look Snape
was giving her now Eris was very glad, and not for the first time, that she had
several aces up her sleeve.
“Eris?”
She
snapped out of her staring contest then, cursing herself for her
inattentiveness. She turned and saw
Harry standing close to her. A quick
glance at Draco told her that the boy had slipped back into a deep sleep. “Yes, Harry?”
“Would you please come and have tea with me,
Ron, and Hermione?” She almost
said no, but his tone was so hopeful and there was a flicker of something
desperate in his eyes.
“Of course,” she said softly. She fell into step behind the trio and soon
found Lupin walking beside her. He
offered her his arm and she gave him a questioning look.
He leaned close and spoke
softly. “I thought you might appreciate
it if I came along and made sure he didn’t put too much pressure on you.”
Eris gave him a grateful smile and
placed her hand on his arm. She was not
entirely comfortable with him yet, but the past few days had taught her that he
was quiet and thoughtful. He had already
stepped into Harry’s path on several occasions, though they didn’t know that
she had noticed. “Thank you.”
He nodded and they continued to
follow the trio of friends. They headed
up to the seventh floor until them came to a tapestry which showed a wizard
teaching trolls to dance. Harry paced back
and forth for a few moments. Eris
glanced up at Lupin, but he just smiled and winked. Suddenly, a door appeared and Harry pulled it
open and motioned for everyone to step inside.
It was then that he noticed Lupin.
“Remus, I didn’t know you were with us,” the
boy said in a strange tone.
If Lupin noticed Harry’s slight frown,
he did not let on. “Oh, I just thought
it would be nice to spend some time with Eris.
I figured we would have many of the same questions for her and it
doesn’t make sense to have repeating herself a dozen times over.”
Eris stifled a chuckle and glanced
to the side where she was surprised to see Snape standing. He gave her a quick nod and slipped into the
room. No one seemed to notice the air
move, but she felt Lupin’s arm tense slightly and prayed that the scent remover
wasn’t wearing off. She stepped away
from her escort and slipped inside.
Several comfortable chairs surrounded a large, circular coffee table on
which sat a tray of biscuits and a tea service.
There was a fireplace in the background with several logs blazing. The chairs were upholstered in a dark
burgundy that reminded her of the carpet in the manor’s entrance hall. It was a rather cozy setting overall. She looked over to where Snape was standing and
decided to sit across from him so that she could observe his reactions to what
was said.
The
others settled themselves into the remaining chairs and Hermione began to serve
tea. Once the cups and biscuits were
passed out, the group sat in silence.
Eris nibbled on a chocolate covered biscuit and tried to put her
thoughts in order, deciding what was safe to tell Harry and, more importantly,
what was safe for Snape to hear.
“How did you meet Draco,” Hermione asked
suddenly. Eris was more than a little
relieved that the witch’s tone was only one of mild interest. The two younger wizards, however, tensed and
stared intently at her.
She
swallowed a sip of tea, going over her response carefully. “We met when we were three. His father was trying to get into Felicity’s
good graces to gain access to her Ministry connections. Mr. Malfoy brought his wife and Draco along
to be introduced. Where inseparable for
a little over four years.”
“What changed,” Harry asked softly.
Eris closed her eyes for a moment
and tried to push away the painful memories of a younger Draco being ripped
from her arms. “Felicity was alerted to
the fact that Lucius Malfoy is a Death Eater.
Obviously, considering my true identity, she couldn’t have him snooping
around anymore. My friendship with Draco
ended up being the victim.”
“I’m sorry,” Harry said gently. Eris gave him a hard look, but let it relax
into a sad smile when she realized that he was sincere.
“Feel sorry for Draco, not me. Prince Manor was the only place he could go
to escape from his boar of a father.”
Eris took another sip of her tea and studied Snape covertly. So far, he had shown no reaction to anything
she said. “I don’t like to think about
how ten years without a true haven has affected him.”
Right away Eris realized she had
said the wrong thing. Despite the sympathy
he had shown so far, Harry jumped on her words like a dog on a fresh bone. “Exactly!
You don’t realize what a total prat he has become.”
Eris chuckled and waved away his
words. “Draco has always been an
arrogant prat, Harry, but I think he’s proven that he isn’t a true Death
Eater.”
“That’s beside the point,” the young wizard
shouted and Eris stared at him with eyes wide.
“You can’t trust him, Eris. Once
he realizes what you are to me, he will turn on you. We have hated each other from day one.”
Eris glanced over at Snape once
more and saw that he was now frowning.
She wanted to tell him herself that she was Harry’s sister, if it wasn’t
obvious already. “His feelings for you don’t
equal his feelings for me. We have our
own history. It’s none of your business
anyway.”
Harry flinched. “None of my business! How can you say that, you’re my…”
“Enough!” Eris leapt to her feet, dropping her teacup
in the process. “I’ve had enough of
this. We can try this again when I’ve had
time to collect myself and Draco is fully well.
That way you can interrogate us together and save time.”
With that,
she turned and marched from the room, leaving the door ajar to ensure Snape’s
escape. She paused a few steps down the
hall and turned to ensure that he was following. He was only a few steps behind her, observing
with narrowed eyes.
“Later,” she muttered and continued back to
the infirmary.
______________________________________________________________________
Remus watched with a heavy heart
as Eris retreated from the room. He
wished that things would go more smoothly between the siblings. It didn’t take much to see that Harry
desperately wanted to be closer to his sister.
He imagined that the boy’s earnest looks mirrored his own. The girl looked so much like Lily. It was mostly in the eyes, but her strong
will echoed that of her mother as well.
Something else was bothering him now
as well, and it seemed a more urgent matter than sulky teenagers did. A strange void hovered near Eris at all
times. It was as if a large chunk of
space was wiped clean of all scent.
“Harry, have you noticed anything strange
around Eris?”
The boy was still glaring half-heartedly
at the door. “You mean besides the fact
that she holds the ferret’s hand?”
Remus chuckled and shook his
head. “I’m asking because I sense a void
following her. It’s almost as if there’s
a cloaked presence.”
Ron perked up then. “You mean like someone under an invisibility
cloak.”
“Well, not exactly,” Remus said slowly. “Where ever Eris is I’ve noticed a space void
of scent nearby. I thought perhaps she
was in possession of a shadow guardian, which would make sense for someone in
her position, but…”
“But its proper etiquette to alert friends and
allies of a shadow guardian’s presence,” Hermione finished for him.
“Very good, Hermione. If school were in session, I would award
points. Not many people know about
shadow guardians. They’re very rare and
those in existence are in the service of pureblood families.”
“Well, why wouldn’t she tell us then,” Ron
asked peevishly.
Harry sighed and Remus felt
another pang of sympathy for the boy.
This was not going easily or turning out like some happy Muggle movie
ending. Eris had not run into Harry’s
arms crying tears of joy over their reunion.
“I guess she just needs more time to trust us.”
Remus nodded. Yes, the trust needed time to build, but he
was going to keep a watch of that strange presence and speak with
Felicity. He had a strange feeling that
he might not like what Madam Prince would have to say.
