CHAPTER FOUR
Jack tapped on the desk in front of him. He yawned widely, rubbed his eyes and sighed. He was tired. He hadn't had enough sleep last night. He had a feeling of unease that he couldn't explain. It had kept him awake most of the night and it was becoming rather irritating. He looked at his watch and saw that it was time for the briefing. He got up from the desk and made his way to the briefing room.
When he entered the room, he saw that Carter, Teal'c and Mitchell were sitting at the table. He frowned slightly when he saw that Daniel was missing. It wasn't unusual for Daniel to be late for a briefing as he usually was caught up in translating the artifacts that the SG teams brought back. He sat down and looked over at the members of SG-1. He sighed softly. He missed going out into the field. While he knew that SGC needed someone who understood it and its people, he missed the action. He hated the fact that he had to let his 'kids' leave without him. Mitchell was doing a good job though. His kids got along with him and Jack had to bite back a grin as he remember Daniel standing in the corridor, checking the out the man's ass. Mitchell was an attractive, but he was 100% straight.
Another few minutes passed as they made small talk and Jack frowned as he realized that Daniel was really late. That was unusual. He looked over at Carter and asked, "Have you seen Daniel today?"
Carter shook her head and replied, "No sir. I've been busy getting my office put back together. I'm still unpacking from my recent stint in Area 51. I haven't really had time to socialize."
Jack looked over at Teal'c and Mitchell. "Have either of you seen him today?" he asked.
Mitchell shook his head. "I went to talk to him earlier, but his office was empty. In fact, his lights were off. I had just assumed that he had a late start this morning," Mitchell said.
"I, too, have not seen DanielJackson. He and I were to have breakfast this morning, but he did not appear," Teal'c said with a rumbling voice.
The uneasy feeling that Jack had since last night intensified. He reached for the phone that was sitting on the table and picked it up.
"Front Gate," a voice said.
"This is General O'Neill. Has Daniel Jackson signed in today?" Jack asked abruptly.
"No sir, he has not," the voice said.
"Thank you," Jack said and put down the phone. He picked it up again and dialed Daniel's house. It began to ring on the other end several times before the answering machine picked it up. Jack left a short message on the machine and hung up. He was quiet for a moment before he looked at SG-1.
"I want you three to go to Daniel's house and check on him. I could be paranoid, but I have an uneasy feeling about this. Daniel isn't usually late like this. Call me and let me know if you find anything," Jack said.
They nodded and left the briefing room. Jack sat back in his chair and sighed. "Oh, Danny boy, what have you gotten yourself into this time?"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Daniel groaned as he became aware of his surroundings. He froze as he remembered being knocked out. Damn, it was a spell. He opened his eyes and blinked at the bright light. He looked around warily and saw that he was in the infirmary at Hogwarts. Shit! He did not need this.
He sat up on the bed and looked around to see if anyone else was in the infirmary. There was no one that he could see. He got off the bed quietly and began to make his way to the door. He paused as he heard a noise, but when nothing happened, he continued to make his way out of the infirmary. He crept down the hallway, making sure to stay where it was shadowed. He looked around the corners warily. He heard someone walking down the corridor and looked around wildly. He saw a shadowed alcove and dove in. He leaned up against the wall and waited for the person to go by.
"Really, Mrs. Malfoy, I've checked for spells and whoever you brought to the infirmary last night, is not Harry Potter," a low velvety voice said.
Daniel shivered at the voice. God, Severus Snape. Daniel bit back a moan as he remembered his old Potions Professor. Even after all these years, the man's voice still had the ability to make him quiver with lust. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
"It's Harry, I'm sure of it. You know that Harry can't hide from me. I was one of his best friends. I would know him anywhere," Hermione said firmly.
Daniel growled softly. Bitch, what right did she have to interfere with his life? He had been perfectly happy being Daniel Jackson. His work was important and he had good friends. He lived his life as he wanted and no one was going to take that away from him. Not even his so-called best friend. Daniel sighed in annoyance. Jack was going to go ballistic when he found out that his friend was missing. Not that he could do anything about it. Jack wouldn't be able to find him in the Wizarding World. Jack wouldn't even be able to find the Wizarding World.
"Mrs. Malfoy, I think your desperate need to find Potter is going to your head. The man in the infirmary is older than Potter by at least ten years. You cannot hide that fact. There is no evidence of any glamours and I have found no trace of a potion in his blood," Snape said in annoyance.
"Surely, after five years, the any trace of a potion would disappear," Hermione said.
"Who is the Potions Master here, Mrs. Malfoy? Because I know damn well its not you," Snape said snidely.
Daniel bit back a snort of amusement. God, he would love a chance for Jack and Snape to meet. They would snark back and forth to each other. It would be great entertainment to see who could be the most sarcastic.
He watched as Snape and Hermione walked past him. He waited until they were gone and began to creep down the corridor again. He had gone a few steps when he heard a voice from behind him.
"So, this is who was hiding in the shadows."
Daniel whirled around and stared in shock at Severus Snape. Damn it, he had forgotten how silent and deadly that man could be.
Daniel glared at him. "Look, I don't know what the hell is going on here, but I don't like being kidnapped from my apartment. You don't know whom you're messing with. I have some very important friends who will be looking from me," Daniel said coldly.
Snape smirked at him. "Oh, be assured, they won't find you here."
Daniel crossed his arms and glared. "You would be amazed at how easy it would be for them to find me," Daniel said snottily.
Snape gave him a through look. He began at Daniel's feet and slowly dragged his eyes up his body until they reached Daniel's eyes. Daniel could feel his body getting warm. Oh god, Snape was checking him out. He could feel his eyes widen in astonishment.
"God, you're checking me out," he blurted out.
Snape glared at him. "I was not," he said coldly.
"Oh, I assure you, I've been on the receiving end of those looks enough time to know that you were definitely checking me out. Jack is so going to kill me," Daniel moaned. "He was right. I'm always getting kidnapped because I'm too pretty."
Snape gaped at him in astonishment. Daniel had to bite back his laughter. He never thought he would see Snape so taken aback. It was almost enough to make his kidnapping worthwhile.
Snape blinked and his face went blank again. "Do you get kidnapped a lot?" the man asked sarcastically.
Daniel sighed mournfully. "Like you wouldn't believe," he said flatly.
Snape gave him a bewildered look. He opened his mouth to say something when a loud voice from behind Snape began to yell.
"He's gone! Harry has escaped!" Hermione yelled. She was running down the corridor, making her way towards Snape. She stopped in shock when saw Snape and Daniel talking. With a squeal of delight, she ran over and threw herself at Daniel. She hugged him tightly and Daniel gave Snape a look of confusion. He had to keep up appearances. He couldn't let the man know that he was Harry Potter.
Daniel took a hold of Hermione's arms and forced her off him. He took a step back and glared at her. "What the hell is going on here? You were that woman who thought I was this person Harry. Did you kidnap me? Why? I want to know what the fuck is going on!" Daniel demanded in a loud voice. "What right do you have to kidnap me? Do you know how much trouble you're in with the United States government, let alone their military? I have friends who will be looking for me. They will not be happy about this," Daniel said coldly.
Hermione looked at him in shock. "Harry! It's all right. You're here now. You're back at Hogwarts. You don't need to hide anymore," she said earnestly.
"Look, you crazy lady, I have told you over and over, I AM NOT HARRY! My name is Dr. Daniel Jackson. I am an Archeologist and a Linguist. I work for the United States Military. I was born in Egypt on July 8, 1965. You can find any of this on the internet. I don't know why you keep thinking I'm this Harry, but you need to get some help, some professional help. Now, I'm leaving this place and if you try to stop me, I'm going to hurt you so much, that your grandchildren will still be feeling it."
With that said, Daniel turned and began to walk down the corridor. As he made his way through the castle halls, he realized that he couldn't act as if he knew where he was going. That would be too suspicious. He stopped, turned and looked at an amused Snape and a shocked Hermione. "How the hell do you get out of this place?" he demanded.
"Harry, please," Hermione pleaded.
"You," Daniel began as he pointed at Hermione. "Shut up! I don't talk to crazy people. I was talking to tall, dark and broody. I need to know how to get out of here. You don't want to be around when my friends find me," Daniel said.
Snape gave him a look of amusement. "I must say, I haven't seen Mrs. Malfoy speechless in quite some time. Are you hungry?" he asked.
Daniel blinked at him. "Ah"¦yea I guess. Why? Does this prisoner actually get food?" he asked snidely.
"If you come this way, I can get you some food," Snape said as he gestured down the hallway. Daniel looked down the hall and realized that it was the way back towards the infirmary.
Daniel crossed his arms and gave Snape a look of annoyance. "Do I look stupid to you? Hello, a Doctor here. I have two PhDs. I've also been kidnapped enough to know that if I go anywhere with you, especially that way, I would just be going back to the place where I escaped from. Maybe you have forgotten, but I'm trying to leave this place," he said.
"Do we have a problem, Severus?"
Daniel jumped in surprise and whirled around. He bit back a curse as he realized that Albus Dumbledore was standing behind him. His blue eyes twinkled merrily as he looked at Daniel over his glasses. Daniel took in the long, bright purple robe. There were silver stars all over the robe. Daniel tilted his head and looked at Dumbledore thoughtfully. "Have the circus kidnapped me? Because I have to tell you, that outfit that you're wearing is quite"¦clownish."
Dumbledore smiled at him. "Thank you. I quite like it myself."
Daniel stared at Dumbledore. He had just insulted the man's robe and Dumbledore didn't even blink. He was definitely getting senile.
"Who are you?" Daniel demanded.
"Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts," he said cheerfully.
"Headmaster? Are you telling me that I was kidnapped by that crazy lady and brought to a school?" Daniel asked incredulously.
"Um"¦yes. Terribly sorry about that. Mrs. Malfoy was sure that you were her missing friend. I didn't realize that her desperation to find her friend had gotten so out of hand that she would kidnap someone," Dumbledore said apologetically.
Hermione huffed. "I have told you once and I have told you twice, that man is Harry Potter. I don't know why you won't believe me, but I know it's true!" she said adamantly. She stamped her foot in frustration.
Daniel gave her a sharp look before turning back to Dumbledore. "Great, then can I go home?" he asked politely.
"Surely you would like to stay awhile? See the castle?" Dumbledore asked cheerfully.
Daniel was tired of being ignored and put off. He wanted to go home, preferably before Jack started knocking heads when he realized that Daniel had been kidnapped. Jack hated having one of his 'kids' missing.
Daniel's face turned cold and he walked up to Dumbledore. "Maybe you didn't understand me the first time, so I'm going to speak smaller words in hopes that you can understand. I want to go home. I have friends who will not be happy that I am missing. You don't seem to understand the severity of kidnapping me. I work for the United States military. I am someone they will do anything to get back. I don't care if we're in Britain. My friends will do anything and everything to get me back, even if that means going through your government to do it. You don't want to mess with my friends," Daniel said coldly.
Dumbledore's eyes dimmed and his face grew serious. "Mr.?" Dumbledore began.
"The name is Dr. Daniel Jackson," Daniel said coldly.
Dumbledore's eyes widened at the name. Daniel looked at him warily as Dumbledore closed his eyes and sighed in resignation. "Of course, Dr. Jackson. If you would follow me, we can talk about this in my office."
Daniel looked at him suspiciously. "You know my name, don't you?" he asked.
"Yes, I have heard of you before. I hadn't realized that it was you that Mrs. Malfoy had kidnapped."
"How do you know who I am?" Daniel asked. "Have you been spying on me?"
"I have heard of your name through the British government. I'm not exactly sure what it is that you do, Dr. Jackson, but I know that you are someone very important to the United States government. They will not like the fact that you have been kidnapped," Dumbledore said seriously.
Daniel snorted. "No, they won't, but it's not them you have to worry about. Once my friend Jack finds out that you have kidnapped me, my government will be the last one you'll need to worry about," Daniel said gleefully.
Dumbledore cleared his throat. "Yes, I'm sure. If you would follow me. You two should come as well," Dumbledore said to Snape and Hermione.
They made their way to Dumbledore's office and Daniel looked around the castle. He could see that nothing had changed since that last time he had been here. He made sure to look as if the moving pictures and stairs confused him. He jumped back as he saw a ghost and looked at Snape, who had snorted in amusement. He decided that he didn't like the man's amusement and stopped. He decided that he would return the favor and gave Snape a through once over. His gaze began from Snape's feet and traveled up his legs. He made sure to stop Snape's crotch, lick his lips and trail his gaze up until he met Snape's wide eyes. He licked his lips, smirked and walked on. Ha! See how he likes it, Daniel thought to himself. He glanced over at a stunned Snape and smiled to himself. Who knew the last nine years with Jack would have such an effect on him.
They entered Dumbledore's office and Daniel sat down on one of the chairs. He had just sat down when Fawkes trilled excitedly and flew over to land on Daniel's lap. Ah, crap! Daniel thought to himself. He knew Fawkes could tell who he was; he just hoped that Fawkes wouldn't give it away.
He made sure to look shocked when Fawkes landed on his lap. "Er"¦what is that?" Daniel said warily. He gave Dumbledore a bewildered look and looked back down at a crooning Fawkes.
"That is my familiar, Fawkes. He is phoenix," Dumbledore said cheerfully.
"Phoenix? But isn't a Phoenix just a myth?" Daniel asked skeptically.
"Not exactly," Dumbledore said. "There are many myths about them. The Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and the Egyptians all have stories about the Phoenix, but they are in fact, a reality. They are just in hiding."
Daniel gave Dumbledore a sharp look and look back down at Fawkes. "It is said that a Phoenix, or a Bennu, was the companion to Ra, the Egyptian sun god. It is said that a Phoenix holds the soul of Ra," Daniel said thoughtfully. He looked Fawkes over and wondered if Fawkes or his kind had anything to do the G'ouald. Could they have been companions to the Ancient false gods? He would need to ask Teal'c if he knew anything about the Phoenix.
"Yes, but as we all know, the Egyptian gods were just a myth," Dumbledore said.
Daniel snorted in amusement. Only if Dumbledore knew what Daniel did. He reached down tentatively and began to pet Fawkes on the head. Fawkes crooned ecstatically and looked Daniel in the eyes. They gazed at each other a moment and Daniel could've sworn that he heard a faint voice in his head. He shook his head to clear his mind, looked around the office, and noticed that little had changed. Some of the knick-knacks had been replaced and he could see a portrait or two had been moved, but other than that, it was until the same.
He swallowed nervously. "Um"¦why are the portraits moving? Why did the stairs move? Why did I see what look like a ghost floating pass me?" Daniel asked. "I think I have been very patient, but some things just don't make sense to me. Where am I?"
"You, Dr. Jackson, are at Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," Dumbledore said.
Daniel frowned. "Witchcraft and Wizardry? Are you telling me that you teach magic here?" Daniel asked in disbelief.
"That is exactly what I'm telling you. You are in a hidden world. Welcome to the Wizarding World, Dr. Jackson."
Daniel was quiet a moment then began to laugh. "All right, you got me. Did Jack put you up to this? Is this payback for the teddy bear incident? Because if it is, it's pretty damn good, but you can stop now. I figured it out," Daniel said in amusement.
Dumbledore shook his head. "I'm not sure who your friend Jack is, but I assure you that this is not a joke. There is truly a hidden magical world. It has been hidden for over a thousand years now," Dumbledore explained.
Daniel snorted. "Sure there is and I bet there are dragons, unicorns and elves as well."
"Why yes, there is," Dumbledore said cheerfully, his blue eyes twinkling merrily.
Daniel crossed his arms and said, "Prove it. Show me some magic."
Dumbledore looked over at Severus and smiled. "If you would, Severus?" he asked.
Snape grumbled, took out his wand and pointed it at the small silver statue sitting on Dumbledore's desk. He muttered a spell and the statue began to rise. Daniel looked at it, his expression unimpressed. "Yes, I'm sure that's great, but a simple string could lift that up. You'll have to do better than that to impress me or even make me believe that what you're saying is true."
Snape glared at him and with a wave of his wand, turned the statue into an owl. Daniel froze as the owl flew over to him and landed on his shoulder. The owl nibbled on his hair and Daniel reached up to pet it. It flew back over and sat on the desk, where Snape turned it back into a statue. Daniel swallowed, looked over at Snape and said, "Ok, color me impressed. So magic is real and there really is a Wizarding World?" he asked.
Snape smirked at him and Dumbledore nodded. "There is indeed."
"Great, but if I see a flying house and young girl with a dog, I am outta here," Daniel said firmly.
Hermione snorted in amusement as Snape and Dumbledore look at him in confusion. He forgot how little the Wizarding World knew of the Muggle world. Daniel sighed and shook his head. "Never mind. It loses something in the explanation. So, tell me about the Wizarding World," Daniel said.
"I don't know why you pretend that you don't know anything about this, Harry. It's getting old. You know damn well there is a Wizarding World and you know exactly who we are," Hermione said in frustration. "Why do you persist in hiding?"
Daniel glared at Hermione. "I swear to god that if you call me Harry one more time, I am going to hit you, woman or not. I AM NOT HARRY!" Daniel yelled. "Get that through your tiny little mind."
Dumbledore sighed with exasperation. "Hermione, I must insist that you get over this foolish notion that Daniel Jackson is Harry Potter. The British government knows Dr. Jackson. He has been working for the United States military for the last nine years. He is well known to them. I'm afraid that it is just impossible for Dr. Jackson to be Harry Potter. His background is too well known," Dumbledore explained.
"Thank you!" Daniel said in exasperation. "At least someone believes me." Daniel turned to Snape and smirked. "What about you, tall, dark and broody. Do you believe me to be this Harry Potter?" he asked. He was genuinely interested to know if he could fool Snape. They had worked together for several years. Severus had trained him and helped him, along with Hermione, Ron and Draco, to defeat Voldemort. They had become friends after a fashion. Snape was one of the very few people who had truly known him.
"Not hardly, Dr. Jackson. You aren't arrogant enough or even insipid enough to be Harry Potter. You are smart, where Harry Potter was a lazy misbegotten twit, whose only claim to fame was to kill one Dark Lord," Snape said snidely.
Daniel blinked. "Huh"¦tell me how you really feel about this Harry Potter," Daniel said sarcastically. Snape smirked at him.
"Regardless of who this Harry Potter is, I want to know how you know about me, Mr. Dumbledore," Daniel said the Headmaster.
"Please, call me Albus," the Headmaster replied.
"Thanks, Mr. Dumbledore, but I don't think I will," Daniel said coolly. He ignored the snort of amusement coming from Snape.
"Er"¦yes. Well, I have monthly tea with the Prime Minister of Britain. I overheard a conversation about you over a year and half ago, I think, something about a lost city. He was very excited about it. Once he realized I was there, he discontinued his conversation. When I inquired about it, he told me that it was classified, but he did talk about how he was an admirer of yours. He was quite effusive in his praises. I'm afraid I didn't really understand a lot of what he was saying, but I heard enough to know that you were very important," Dumbledore explained as he sipped his tea.
"Well what do you know? The Prime Minister likes me," Daniel said in bemusement.
"Before we continue, would you like something to eat?" Dumbledore asked.
"Please! I didn't get dinner last night, nor have I had breakfast," Daniel said in irritation as he gave Hermione a glare. Hermione didn't see it as her thoughts were directed inwardly. He hoped that she would take Dumbledore at his word. He didn't want to have to continue fighting her for his identity.
Dumbledore called for a house elf and ordered some lunch. As they ate, Dumbledore began to explain about the history of the Wizarding World. Daniel already knew about it, but coming from an archeologist point of view, it was rather exciting. He asked questions that he wouldn't have thought to ask before.
"Was Merlin really a wizard or was he just a myth?" Daniel asked.
"Yes, he was a wizard. His actual name was Myrddin, but he was also known as Merlin. There are conflicting stories about where he came from. Some say that he had a mother and lived with her until her death; others say that he came to this world and was an actual being of light. There is not much known about Merlin himself, just of his actions. He was the most powerful Wizard in all of history. There is even a rumor that Merlin himself is still alive, waiting for us to need his guidance once again," Dumbledore explained.
"What about the rumors that he was the Father of all magic on earth?" Daniel asked excitedly. The more he heard, the more he realized that Merlin was indeed responsible for the birth of the Wizarding World. It couldn't have been just Merlin though. He would've needed help. Did he activate the Ancient gene, therefore causing the gene to mutate and grow? Daniel was sure that it was the gene that gave the Wizards the ability to use magic. Did that mean that Jack now had the ability to use magic? Could the dual download of the Ancients knowledge have activated Jack's gene? Could that be why Jack was able to heal Brata'c when he had been injured?
Dumbledore laughed. "Hardly that. He wasn't the Father of magic, but it is said that he gave us the ability to learn how to harness magic. If he hadn't, we would still have magic; we just wouldn't have been able to use it."
Daniel nodded. That sounded about right. He would love to find Merlin and asked him all about it, but sadly, he had no idea where the Ancient would be. Even if he was around, what made him believe that Merlin would even talk to him?
"So when did he die?" Daniel asked.
Dumbledore chewed on his lip thoughtfully, his gaze absent. "If I remember reading the histories correctly, it was said that he died around the time the Wizarding World hid itself. There are rumors that Merlin was a time-traveler or an Immortal as he had an unusually long life. It was said that when he died, he ascended into a being of magic," Dumbledore said with a chuckle. "Of course, that is purely hogwash. I'm afraid that records from Merlin's time weren't kept as well as they should have and a lot has been lost through the ages. They are nothing more than rumors and myth. When did Merlin actually die, I'm not sure, but I doubt he ascended into a being of magic."
Daniel held in a snort of amusement. He couldn't help but feel smug as he realized that he knew something that Dumbledore didn't. He wondered what Dumbledore would say if he knew that Merlin -- the Father of Magic -- was in fact, an alien. He was so very tempted to tell him, but he restrained himself. Jack would kill him if he told Dumbledore anything, just to see the old man speechless.
"Well, this was great and everything, but I really need to be getting back," Daniel explained.
"I'm afraid, Dr. Jackson, that I cannot allow you to leave with your memories of the Wizarding World," Dumbledore said regretfully.
Daniel looked at him in disbelief. "Excuse me? Are you saying that now that I know about that Wizarding World, you have to kill me?" he asked in outrage.
Dumbledore looked confused for a moment before smiling. "No, Dr. Jackson. There is a simple spell that will erase your memories from your time here. There will be no killing."
"Why would you want to do that?" Daniel asked in confusion.
"Simple, it's imperative that we keep knowledge of the Wizarding World a secret. You are an important person, Dr. Jackson. You are important to your government and the British government. Your absence will be missed and we can take no chances that you might tell anyone about the Wizarding World," Dumbledore explained.
"Who would believe me?" Daniel asked incredulously.
"I'm afraid that there are those who would believe you. Peace has been held between the Muggle World and the Wizarding World by a shaky treaty. Only certain people in the governments know about us. It is easier that way," Dumbledore explained. He took out his wand and pointed it at Daniel. "I am sorry about this. I would have loved to have talked to you further," Dumbledore said.
Daniel got up from his chair. "Hey, wait! Don't do anything foolish. I won't tell, really."
Daniel began to back up from Dumbledore. He didn't want to have to use his magic, but there is no way that he was going to let them Obliviate him.
"Again, Dr. Jackson, I am sorry," Dumbledore said. He had just raised his wand when a bright light flashed behind him. A strange noise was heard and Dumbledore was hit with a blue light, knocking him unconscious. Another sound was heard and Snape and Hermione were knocked out as well.
"Well, that was interesting. Who knew Gandalf was into kidnapping," Jack said impishly. He looked over at Daniel and grinned widely. "Why do I have to keep saving your ass, Danny boy?" he asked cheerfully.
"Ah, hell," Daniel groaned.
