Chapter 4: Strange Giftings
Marvin glanced at Severus again,
who was trying very hard to pretend that Harry was not walking along side them
laughing his ass off. After the cotton batting had settled on the floor and
Mrs. Krivdal had silently assessed the carnage, things had been quickly repaired
by the wizards and witches while Marvin watched with a nervous smile. Wendy
was reprimanded gently for not letting Marvin know immediately that she was
gone from home without permission. Once Ginger understood what had happened
she really couldn’t be mad. Young witches and wizards really had no control
over their little bursts of magic. Of course, Justin immediately set about
altering the wards so that Wendy would no longer be able to Apparate away.
Apparently, it was quite uncommon for someone as young as Wendy to manage that.
Severus had attempted a quick
escape after depositing Wendy into Ginger’s arms, but Mrs. Krivdal had insisted
that they all sit down and watch Marvin open his graduation present. The Krivdals
had gifted him with four sets of everyday wizarding robes in lovely jewel tones
of garnet, emerald, sapphire, and yellow tourmaline. They had all beamed at
him and his excitement and laughed as he lamented the fact that he wouldn’t
have much of an opportunity to wear them after the summer. Mrs. Krivdal had
simply patted his hand and told him that she was certain they would come in
handy eventually.
Harry hiccupped, drawing Marvin’s
attention to him once again. Severus was glaring at his fellow wizard as
well. “Really, Potter, it was not that amusing.”
“Oh, but it was,” Harry insisted.
“You didn’t see the look on your face, Severus! It was just…so…and with the
little twitch…and then the cushion…POOF!”
Harry dissolved once again into a
fit of giggles and Marvin tried very hard to bite back a smile. “Harry, you’re
being mean.”
“Do not try and tell me you didn’t
think it was funny! That sweet little girl kissing him on the nose and
then…and then…TWITCH!”
“And you wonder why I have doubted
your intelligence for all these years, Potter,” Severus snapped and then
proceeded to brood for the remainder of the walk home.
Once they’d reached his house,
Marvin hurried inside with the intent of ordering pizza for everyone only to
find that Lucius had managed on his own. “I’m impressed. here I thought you
weren’t paying attention.”
Lucius sniffed. “As though I
would pass up the opportunity to use the telephone without you hovering about.”
Marvin rolled his eyes and grabbed
a piece of pizza. Ron and Draco were nestled close together on the couch
receiving disdainful glances from Severus. Marvin had heard enough about it in
everyone’s letters to know that Severus was simply sick of seeing the couple
hanging all over each other, but it had only been a few months. Harry and
Ginny were quietly discussing their wedding plans with Sirius, who was acting
as Harry’s parent for the wedding along with Remus.
“It will be just a week before
the students arrive,” Harry said with a small smile. “That’s the earliest we
could get Hermione back.”
Sirius chuckled. “She couldn’t
cut her trip short for once? Doesn’t she ever miss spending her free time with
all of you?”
Harry shrugged. “She takes
continuing her education very seriously. We usually get her to ourselves
during the shorter holidays, but she did go away this Christmas. Poor Marvin
still hasn’t gotten to meet her.”
Marvin laughed. “As though I
needed one more person hounding my about my last year of school! I am looking
forward to meeting her though.”
“That’s good,” Ginny said with a
bright smile, “because you’re pretty much going to be her escort.”
Marvin frowned. “But I thought
she was paired with Ron, since she’s the Maid of Honor.”
“Yes, but Ron will run off with
Draco and you’re paired with Tonks and she’ll want to be with Remus.” Ginny
smiled and patted Marvin’s leg. “Luna will go back to Neville and I don’t
think Severus will dance with you.”
Marvin glanced over at Severus who
was still sulking and eyeing his pizza with suspicion. “I guess that’s true,
but what if Hermione brings a boyfriend?”
Sirius, Harry, and Ginny all burst
out laughing and Marvin frowned, thinking that they were being a bit cruel
towards their friend. Harry noticed his look and calmed down first. “Hermione
is married to his teaching and research, Marvin. I’m not even sure she sees
any other human beings during the summer. She goes to pretty remote places.
Everyone at Hogwarts is taken or…er...” Harry glanced over at Severus before
continuing. “Or not an option. I’m taken, Draco and Ron are gay, you’ve got
plans for Severus, and she never sees anyone away from Hogwarts.”
Marvin smiled slyly. “What about
you, Sirius? You haven’t settled down yet.”
Sirius laughed and shook his
head. “Hermione’s too smart to settle down with an old mongrel like me.
Besides, I like playing it stag, it suits me.”
“Careful, Sirius,” Harry
cautioned. “Marvin is a notorious plotter. If you’re not careful he might
formulate some plans for you.”
Sirius eyed Marvin for a moment
and the muggle wasn’t certain he liked the way the wheels in the grey-eyed
wizards head were spinning. “I’m been known to pull off a few schemes.
Perhaps its time that someone planned something for Marvin.”
“Well, now what could you
possibly do to someone as boring as me,” Marvin said with a half smile. He
wasn’t sure he liked the idea of a Marauder plotting against him. What would
Sirius try to do?
Harry snorted. “It hasn’t escaped
our notice that you’re single as well, Marv. Maybe its time for someone else
to play matchmaker for a while.”
Marvin grimaced. “What, and dash
the hopes of all the nice, young, witches who have been owling me all year with
marriage proposals? Harry, I do have a heart. Besides, I can’t let you get in
the way of my latest master plan, but I thank you for the warning. I’ll have
to keep my eyes open.”
“Speaking of which,” Harry said,
checking his watch. “I think it’s about time that we all closed our eyes for
the day. Dumbledore will be here bright and early to set the wards in place
and then we’ll be flooing back to Hogwarts with the Krivdals.”
“Oh yes, I almost forgot,” Marvin
said waving at Severus to get his attention. “Sev, Mrs. Krivdal and Wendy are
staying at Justin’s flat in London for the summer so that Ginger will be able
to visit them regularly. Isn’t that wonderful?”
Severus continued to glare at his
half-eaten pizza, but Marvin detected a slight change in the man’s onyx eyes.
They softened just a touch.

The next morning Severus woke up
with a crick in his back from sleeping on the couch. There simply hadn’t been
enough room to transfigure beds for everyone and so the younger members of
their group had slept on the floor and Lucius slept in the guest room he had
occupied all summer, leaving Severus with the bed. Everyone else was still
asleep, so he took the opportunity to utilize the bathroom before indulging in
the joy of waking the rest of the laggards up.
As they all sat around enjoying
their breakfast they heard the loud ‘pop’ signaling Albus’ arrival. The barmy
old coot swept into the house wearing blinding white robes with yellow suns
embroidered on them. “Good morning everyone! I’m glad to see that you’re all
awake and present to see Marvin open his graduation present. Do all of you
have your presents as well?”
Severus allowed himself a slight
smile at the thought of the roll of parchment he had within his robes. He
smirked as Harry, Sirius, and Ron scurried off to collect their presents. When
everyone was settled again, Harry offered his present first. “Here you go,
Marvin, why don’t you start with this one?”
Marvin accepted the brightly
wrapped package with a smile and quickly tore into it. Inside was a large
photo album full of magical photographs. Severus couldn’t help but smile at
the look of glee on his ‘little brother’s’ face as he flipped through the
book. There was a copy of every picture that had been taken during Marvin’s
last stay as well as dozens of photographs of everyone from all the years that
Marvin had missed, but read about in his favorite books. There were pictures of
the Marauders by the lake, himself when he was taking his Potions N.E.W.T.,
James and Lily on their wedding day, Harry when he was a baby, a Weasley family
Christmas photo, Tonks and Remus at their wedding, the Golden Trio during their
Hogwarts days as students, and dozens more. The poor muggle looked quite
overwhelmed at the gift, and Severus wondered how he would react to the rest of
them.
“Thank you,” Marvin said
tearfully. “This is just amazing! I can’t believe some of the pictures you
have in here, Harry.”
Sirius pushed his present forward
next. Marvin dove in once again and let out a small gasp of pleasure as he
pulled out several large books. “Interesting, they’re all on the wizarding
world’s view of muggles throughout the ages. Fascinating! Thank you, Sirius. These
should be quite an interesting read.”
Ron and Draco held out their
present then and Severus was pleased to see that they had indeed decided to buy
Marvin a set of formal robes as opposed to…other things they had considered.
They were a lovely shade of blue, just a touch darker than Marvin’s eyes, and
trimmed with silver. “Thank you both. I hope I get a chance to try them out
soon.”
Draco had a mischievous glint in
his eyes and Severus gave him a warning look. The blond smiled. “Well, you’ll
have a different set for the wedding, but you could always come to the Yule
Ball at Hogwarts this year.”
Albus quickly shushed them all and
held out a thin, flat box. “Your gift, Marvin, from Minerva and myself.
Something that we hope you will enjoy for many years to come.”
Severus held his breath as Marvin
accepted the box and opened it slowly. If the muggle didn’t accept this gift,
then Severus’ own gift would be somewhat pointless. Still, perhaps Marvin
would be pleased by the gesture…
The last piece of paper came off
and Marvin pulled out a small stack of parchments. Everyone was silent as the muggle
began to read the top parchment only to let out a small gasp a moment later.
Severus deftly caught the parchments as they slipped from Marvin’s shaking
hands.
“You…you want me to teach at
Hogwarts?”
