Chapter
Three
By second period Sirius was decidedly sullen,
whilst Remus and James were enjoying a good chuckle at his expense. Even the
sight of Severus Snape when they walked through the
classroom door for potions couldn’t perk him up. Although it was a near thing
considering that he was still stuck with the hideous blue eye shadow and heavy
mascara, not to mention tart red lipstick. But having managed to be rid of the girls uniform and tacky jewellery, he looked a lot like a
bad drag queen.
Sirius slumped down on a stool, a space either
side of him, with Peter nervously fiddling with his supplies at the end of the
four seated row. Remus and James
exchanged a glance, simultaneously producing clenched fists, and one two three…
Neither of the pair wanted to be working with Peter, even if it did mean being
paired with a pouting Sirius. Because although, admittedly, Remus stuffed up
the occasional potion, no one managed to do quite as abysmally as Peter, who
wouldn’t be outdone in this case until a few years down the line by a young
Neville Longbottom. With the final nod of their fists
they quickly changed, a spread hand and appointed finger rested between them.
“I win.” James crowed, and quickly dropped onto
the stool to the left of Sirius, leaving Remus to the remaining stool. “Better
luck next time Remus.”
Before Remus could settle into his seat, a
grotesque bellow echoed from the front of the classroom. “Mr. Lupin, take your seat this instant!” Dashing forward, Remus
kept his eyes firmly affixed on his desk.
Standing before the class, was the rather
odious Professor Horace Slughorn. A
rather unfortunate name to have, especially when teaching children; as
similarities, between the man and the rather slimy animal which shared part of
his name, could not help but be drawn. The marauders themselves were
fairly certain, that as slugs do not have horns, that slug horn was a euphemism
for a slug’s…penis. A rather inspired deduction that never
failed to send the quartet into uncontrollable laughter and giggles at the mere
mention of his name.
His cloak swirled around his feet as he spun to
scrawl on the board, “Today you will be working on the first of two potions;
during this class you will prepare the swelling solution-”
Sirius suddenly perked up and swivelled to
trade a look with James, before shifting round to face Remus, eyes shinning and
brows wiggling, a look on his face silently begging: Moony…
Remus’ eyes widened in comprehension, his head
began furiously shaking, no, no nonononononono! The words forming soundlessly on his
lips, Dumbledore was already beginning to reach the end of his tether with them
this year, and it wouldn’t do to be expelled before Christmas during fifth
year, no one would hire them without O.W.L.’s under
their belts (so to speak).
However it seemed Sirius would go ahead even
without Remus’ agreement, as it seems James shared his view. A smirk dancing
across his lips as he and Sirius shared their own little look. Remus could only
pray that he wouldn’t be caught in the crossfire, or at least had a decent
alibi when their plot came to fruition.

A little blackened round the edges, Remus
stumbled from the classroom in a daze, clutching his book bag protectively to
his chest. The bag itself was rather the worse off of the two, barely clinging
together, and extremely charred. He didn’t even want to think about what had
happened to the books inside.
When Peter appeared at his side, spluttering
apologies, he just whimpered and tightened his hold on the poor little bag, as
if trying to protect it from further damage. A frightened look painted across
his features until James finally pulled the other boy away, giving Sirius a
sharp look that simply said ‘fix it!’.
With a quick step, Sirius slid his arm around
Remus’ shoulder and lead the shell-shocked boy away in
the direction of the Gryffindor dorm. His few words echoing
in Remus’ ear as they made the trek up changing stairways and seemingly endless
corridors. For once the Fat Lady put up little fuss over Sirius’ abrupt
manner.
Settled up in the dorm room, Sirius left Remus
perched on the edge of his bed, and went to grab a bowl of water and cloth. Placing them on the floor as he knelt before the smaller boy,
reaching out to pry the book bag from Remus’ death grip, being sure to set it down
in view once he noticed Remus’ eyes following it.
His hands flexed, two thick burnt rings across
his fingers and palms slowly coming in and out of view, the result of grasping
the heavy silver cauldron in a vain attempt to stop the contents spewing everywhere.
Sirius couldn’t help but hear the howl Remus had let loose echo in his ears,
reminiscent of the moments when the full moon sunk away while the sun rose.
Sirius gently ran the damn rag over his small
hands, clearing away the thin black coating over the burns, leaving them a
bright shiny red. A breathless whimper breaking its way through the smaller
boy’s lips, his eyes shimmering with tears as Sirius wrapped clean strips of
cloth loosely around both hands.
“I’m afraid that’ll have to do until James gets
back from Pomfry’s.” Shaking out another strip, he
folded and wetted it, rising up on his knees to drag the cloth across Remus’
dirtied forehead, taking care where the muck thickened, becoming a ruddy brown.
A sharp hiss escaping Remus as he pressed a little too hard, an oozing of red slipping down across the newly cleaned skin. “Sorry.
I’ll try to be more careful.”
A hesitant hand came up, wrapping around
Sirius’ wrist. “It’s…okay.” A weak thread of a voice, shaken
but a relief to hear. It was soothing to have Remus regain his voice so
soon after a brush with silver, he knew it wasn’t
unusual for Remus to stay silent for hours depending on how bad it had been. He
pulled Remus closer wrapping his arms around the trembling boy, pretending not
to hear the rough breathes and chocked off gasps. Sirius waited until Remus’
breath slowed before guiding him back onto the bed, then quietly leaving the
dorm on the hunt for James and Peter.
The pair was down in the hustle and bustle of
the common room, sat on one of the old battered couches, transfigurations
textbook out and between them, whilst James demonstrated some wave with his
wand, Peter staring with rapt attention.
Sirius dropped down onto the arm next to James,
staring into the fire crackling before them, tense and quiet.
James took one look at him and closed up the
textbook and handed it over to Peter. “Hey Peter. Can you give me and Sirius a
moment?” He slid his wand away and smacked Sirius on the thigh. “Come on. Let’s
go for a walk.” He pushed himself up and guided Sirius out of the common room, Peter sat on the couch, text clutched tight to his
chest glancing back and forth between them and the stairway up to the dorms.
“We’ll be back in a bit. See you Pete.”

The air was crisp outside, the grass shimmering
with frost, the sun low and dim, a cream circle on a monotone grey sky. Remus
always said he loved winter when he was younger, staring at the patterns the
frost made on the windows. Even now, he would lightly trace his fingers along
the glass, before pressing his palm to it, watching as the ice melted, then pressing it to Sirius’ cheek, his hand icy cold like
the pane of glass, a startlingly small handprint slowly fading away.
Remus’ childlike joy made Sirius fall in love
with the season, right up until that first full moon, the reminder that the
nights were longer and all the more painful. Right now though, Sirius’ thoughts
were as far from there as possible, kicking his toes into the hard ground as he
walked alongside James. Barely holding up his side of the
vapid conversation.
Only once they reached the lake did James stop
and look around. “Okay, so what’s going on? It can’t just be Remus,
you’ve had more mood swings than a pregnant witch.”
“You know we break up in a few weeks…”
“What?!” James wrenched off his glasses and
rubbed at the bridge of his nose. “Sirius, can we please just have a
straightforward chat?”
“Everyone’s going home. You’re off visiting
family, Peter’s going to America,
and Remus…”
“Is that…?” James sighed softly and pushed
Sirius to sit on a nearby rock. “Oh Siri.”
He lent forward, hands resting on Sirius’ shoulders. “I’m just seeing my grandparents, I’ll be gone for a week. Peter…well it’s no
big deal if you don’t see him this break, come on how often do you seek him out
anyway. And Remus, we’ll see him regularly, and even then you’ll be able to owl
and floo him.”
Sirius’ head dropped onto his open palms,
shoulders slumping. “Not this time.” His voice so very low, James had to come
even closer just to hear it.
“Wha-what do you
mean?” Sirius just shook his head, slouching lower, closing himself off from
James. “Siri, please?”
“Remus is getting worse. Every full moon leads
to more damage. He gets more aggressive the closer they come. He gets more
withdrawn with each exposure to… he’s getting worse James, whose to say we’ll
be able to handle it this time.” He stared back whilst James searched his face,
looking for something.
“That’s not all Siri.”
He watched Sirius’ eyes widen, “How long have I known you? Don’t bullshit me
here. What’s really going on?”
Wide eyes stared back at him, full of fear and
despair. His voice trembled as he spoke, thin and thready. “They know, James.
They know.”
“Fuck.” All would agree the sentiment was
wholly understating the supreme mess of things. But right at this moment, James
didn’t have anything else to spit out. “Fuck.”
