ch.4 Negotiations
Hermione's Uncle came back through the office and idly picked up the paperwork, looking it over from long habit. "Looks like everything's in order. Not that I expected anything else". He smiled affectionately at Hermione. "This may be very different from anything Hermione was educated in, but she is very good at it. OK, fax off copies of all this to the Sellers."
He turned to Severus. "There's not much here for the Sellers to dislike. I think you've probably bought yourself a house. Are you relocating to the States, then?"
"I think I may spend time here when I want to get away. There are a lot of memories in England, not all of them are good." His eyes met Hermione's. Her Uncle nodded, loking from one to the other. "Professor, we'd be pleased to have you over for dinner this evening?"
"Actually, I thought perhaps Hermione and I might go out somewhere. We have a lot to discuss."
Both men regarded Hermione with raised eyebrows, and she was reminded again how much they resembled each other. You don't suppose Dad's family somewhere way back when...? She shook herself out of it. Seeing as how it seemed inevitable that she would have dinner with him SOMEWHERE she decided private was better than with her Uncle and Aunt. They DID need to talk.
"I thought I would take him to La Cucina" she said.
"Then we'll see you for dinner another time". Her Uncle shook hands with Severus. "You'll be around until the sale closes? That usually takes about two weeks or so."
"Yes, I'll be around."
"Great. You'll enjoy La Cucina. Great food, nice atmosphere. Have a good time, you two."
La Cucina was one of the nicest retaurants in town. Italian, of course; small tables, white linen, quiet and relaxing with soft music playing so that conversations weren't easily overheard. And the staff were all quite discreet; friendly and attentive and pleasant, but not intrusive. The food was excellent, much beyond what one might expect in a small Arizona town, and the wine cellar was rather extensive. Hermione wasn't exactly a wine buff, but Severus seemed to be. She watched, bemused, as he discussed labels and vintages with the restaurant owner who had dropped by their table to say hello to Hermione. Her Aunt and Uncle loved this restaurant, and were good and steady customers, so the family was well known in the restaurant.
As they ate they made small talk, she told him about her Aunt and Uncle and the rest of her family. She was an only child but spent vacations with a large extended family. He was reluctant to talk about his childhood, kept asking her questions. It struck Hermione how different he was from 'the Profesor' she thought she knew. This man was pleasant, funny, stil rather sarcastic, but not at all cold or mean tempered. It was remarkably pleasant meal.
She asked suddenly,"How much of what you were as Professor was really you, and how much was a part you played?"
"You mean how mean and snarky and cold am I really?" He asked with an amused smirk.
She blushed then, and stammered, and finally laughed. "Yes, I guess that IS what I'm asking".
He sobered, "I didn't grow up like you, Hermione. I had a miserable childhood. A lot of my 'Professor' persona is taken from my father. He WAS that person; he was cold and looked down at everyone. He used his sarcasm the way some men use a belt or whip. My mother was quiet and timid, afaid to cross him. I grew up largely alone. When I got to Hogwarts I didn't know how to interact with people except to imitate my father. And then I ran into Black and Potter. I think you know most of the rest. Some of the 'Professor' IS me. I don't like having to deal with dunderheads and idiots. I have little patience with them. But I'm not that cold, and I DO enjoy some things in life."
"Yes, I've noticed" Hermione murmured, and he laughed. "Did your father have your voice?"
"It's hard for me to remember my father clearly, Hermione. The memories are too clogged with emotion. After I went to Hogwarts I saw him rarely. He died some years ago. And my mother is a home for elderly witches. I visit once a year out of duty. She is quite mad." After a pause he smiled and leaned closer to her, "How exactly would you describe my voice?"
Shivers went down Hermione's spine at the tone. "You know what I think of your voice. You admitted you read my mind. And don't tell me 'some books are easy'. Your voice is drop dead sexy. It can be a caress all by itself. I'm not the only student who thought so, you know."
"Do tell?"
She was laughing now as she spoke. "Most of the students just thought you were horrible, but some of the girls, the ones who liked CHALLENGES, used to talk about your hands, your voice, what might be under your robes. More than one girl giggled about her dreams with you as the romantic lead."
"And did you?"
"I don't giiggle very much."
"Dream about me, I mean. Because I dreamed about you. I didn't even notice the other girls. I don't like giggling. So, did you?" "Er, what?" She couldn't seem to take her eyes off his lips.
"Did you dream about me?"
She met his eyes. "Yes," she said slowly, feeling suddenly hot all over. "I dreamed about you..." She found herself remembering an especially hot dream, where had the content come from? She had never done such things. She had never even IMAGINED such things. He watched her, smirk firmly in place, as if he were reading her mind right then.
They talked on through the main dish with the ever present wine. Hermione was a light-weight where alcohol was concerned and was feeling quite tipsy by the time they finished their shared desert. The fresh, cold breeze outside held a dampness that promised rain or snow. They drove back to her small house in a surprisingly comfortable silence.
As they pulled up in front of the house he asked "Why do you live here? Why in this muggle town when there is a wizarding town close by?"
"You forget, I'm muggle born. It doesn't seem strange to me. I wanted to be close to my Aunt and Uncle, close to their office. And for awhile at least I didn't want to be around anything to do with the magical world. I wanted to forget all about it for awhile." She sounded troubled again.
"And now?" he asked softly. "And now I can't really forget it. It's part of me, the same way the muggle world id part of me. I'm going to have to live in both worlds."
"And will those worlds include me? Include US?
"I want them to include us. I've missed you terribly, both the snarky Professor AND my one-night lover. I want a future with you."
"Then you shall have it. Any way you want it. Albus would be delighted if you would come back and teach for him. Oddly enough,I think I would miss teaching if I quit it. But we don't have to do that if you don't want to."
"I think I would like to be at Hogwarts as a teacher."
"We could live here vacations if you like, be near your realtives."
"My parents are thinking of retiring here." "then that would be perfect."
"Are you coming in?"
"Only if I stay."
