Hey,
thanks for all the wonderful reviews. The usual disclaimers apply. Here we go
again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After
spending the afternoon and night looking through all the books that Hermione
had stashed around her parents house. It hit her. At 3:00AM. Grimmauld Place. Severus and Lucius
needed a place to stay like Grimmauld Place. With all the charms, wards, and other
protections that were put on there, nobody could get in unless you were let
in. And it wasn’t like those two were going to let a bunch of Death Eaters
know where they are. Now it was time for some sleep. She would think of where
in the morning. Maybe Kingsley had some ideas.
BANG!
Hermione
jumped awake. What was that? Grabbing her wand out from underneath her pillow
she jumped from her bed and went running for her bedroom door.
CRASH!
BANG! AAAHHH! HELEN!!!
Oh,
god, it was her parents, something was happening to her parents. Breath. I
can’t go dashing out there without a plan, that won’t help them. Slowly
opening her door, Hermione stuck her head out just far enough to look down the
hall. Her parent’s door was open. She saw two flashing green lights and
several shadows. Death Eaters. Death Eaters were in her house, and had just
killed her parents. Where was the Order? Slowly but quickly she opened her
door a little further, slipping around the door jam, she quickly made her way
down the hallway in the opposite direction. Once she made it around the corner
at the end of the hall, she ran quickly to the stairs and down through the
front foyer, down the hallway to the study. The fireplace in the study was the
only one connected to the floo. Upstairs she heard more crashing and yelling.
The Death Eaters were looking for her. Obviously they didn’t find her sleeping
peacefully in her bed. But really, what did they expect. They weren’t exactly
being quiet as mice. Just as she eased the study door closed several popping
noises were heard around the room.
Hermione
froze. Slowly turning around, she breathed a sigh of relief. It was the
Order, not more Death Eaters.
“They
have killed my parents. They will be down here any second looking for me. We
have to go.” With this statement the Order started leaving.
Remus Lupin pulled her to him, and apparated
them away. Just as they were disappearing Hermione looked over her shoulder to
the study door as it burst open revealing the Death Eaters.
Landing
in the square in front of 12 Grimmauld Place, Hermione and Remus quickly made their way to the
house that was just appearing. Walking up the stairs, Remus quietly opened the
front door so as not to disturb Mrs. Black’s portrait. Obnoxious painting.
The other Order members were already there. Mrs. Weasley ran up to Hermione
and enveloped her in a crushing hug.
“Oh,
you poor dear. Horrible, just horrible. Come with me now, let’s get you a
cuppa and you can tell us what happened.”
Thus
sheperding Hermione out of the foyer down the hall, to the backstairs leading
down to the kitchen. Inside, sitting at the old, scared kitchen table was
Harry, Ron and Ginny. Hermione’s three best friends. Seeing her, they jumped
up and ran to her.
“Hermione,
they wouldn’t let me go…”
“Oy,
Hermione, what you get up to know…”
“Hermione, I was so worried, that haven’t told us…”
So
happy at seeing their friend standing there, Harry, Ron and Ginny couldn’t even
wait for the others to stop talking before they started in.
“Alright
you lot, that’s enough. Let her at least sit down. She’s had a terrible
shock.” Mr. Weasley said.
Ginny
grabbed on to Hermione’s arm and gently lead her over to the table. Sitting
down on her right side, Harry sat on her left and Ron right across from her.
Mrs. Weasley brought over the tea she offered and Hermione was grateful. She
was cold. So cold, she couldn’t stop shivering. Holding the warm mug full of
tea felt wonderful. Slowly taking a sip, Hermione looked around at all the
people milling around the kitchen. All in different poses, either openly
staring at her, or trying to pretend they are attending other business while
they were staring at her. Did they think that she was going to start screaming
at any second? She honestly couldn’t, she just couldn’t.
“Hermione,
I know this is hard. But we need to know what happened tonight. They wards
for your house started screaming. We got there as soon as possible.”
“I
know you did Kingsley. It all happened so fast. I was asleep. But I couldn’t
have been asleep for long, because at 3:00 I finially figured out a solution to our other
problem.”
“We’ll
worry about that later, go on for now. You were asleep…”
“Yes,
a loud banging noise woke me. I think it was the Death Eaters breaking the
wards and apparating inside the house. Grabbing my wand, I jumped out of bed
to go see what was going on when there were more crashes, and bangs, and I
heard my father yelling for my mother.” Pausing, Hermione looked around the
room. Everyone was looking at her, with a mix look of horror, sadness, and
pity. No one wanted to know what was going on in that room, but everyone had
an idea. “I slowly opened my bedroom door and stuck my head out. I saw that
my parent’s bedroom door was open. Just then there were two flashes of green
light and I saw shadows in their room. I knew it was the Death Eaters and that
they had just killed my parents. I quickly left my room and ran down stairs.
I had just made it to the study to floo out when you all appeared. You know
the rest.”
“My,
god Hermione.” Harry breathed. Hermione turned to him. You could see, in his
eyes that he was blaming himself. Thinking that if she wasn’t his friend then
the Death Eaters wouldn’t have killed her parents, and tried to kill her.
“Harry,
no, stop it. It’s not your fault. I am a target all on my own. Not just because
I am friends with you. I represent everything they stand against. They
believe that muggleborns are inferior, that we are no better then squibs when
it comes to our magic abilities. But I prove them wrong. I am a muggleborn that
is the top of our class in every subject, but divination but really, and I am
hailed as the smartest witch since Rowan Ravenclaw herself. They have to try
to destroy me on mere principle alone, never mind that Harry Potter the
boy-who-lives-to-be-a-pain-in-their-ass is one of my best friends.”
With
Hermione’s little speech, Harry started smiling, and by the time that she was
finished everyone was out right laughing. No one had ever heard Hermione use
language like that.
“Alright
everyone, I think everyone needs to go back to bed. We all have to be up and a
jobs very soon. Let’s meet here, tomorrow evening to share any information
about this attack that we can learn.” Kingsley said. With that everyone
walked over to give Hermione a hug before they all shuffled out of the kitchen
to head home or up to bed.
“Kingsley,
wait, may I have a word with you for just a minute.” Hermione asked.
“Sure.”
“Well,
it’s about the other thing. We need to make another Grimmauld Place. A house, where Lucius
could live, and Severus too if he comes forward, that will be safe. I don’t
know where, but that is the best solution.”
“You’re
right Hermione, mmmmm, maybe Malfoy Manor itself. We can get Filius out the to-do
the charm work and the rest of us can popover at some point today to set
individual wards and detectors. All of that plus the original Malfoy safeguards
should be enough. I will go to Azkaban first thing and ask Lucius if he is ok
with your plan and us securing his house. I let you know what he says. Good
job, Hermione. And know that…”
“I know Kingsley. Thank you.” Hermione
left the kitchen to slowly make her way up to the bedroom that she shares with
Ginny. She didn’t think that sleep would come, but she felt so tired, she just
wanted to lie down. Entering the room she glanced at Ginny’s bed. She was
just staring up at the ceiling. Hermione gave her a sad smile and wandered
over to her bed. Placing her wand beneath her pillow she lay down and drifted
off to sleep.
In
another part of the country, Severus Snape was just stepping into the shower.
He was no longer tired. After decades of teaching, grading papers and spying
his body only need a few hours of sleep each night. After his quick shower, he
dressed, in something other than his bat robes, and walked to the kitchen. He
was hungry. Passing his couch he saw yesterdays Daily Prophet sitting there.
Thinking that he might as well read that one before today’s arrived he picked
it up carrying it with him into the kitchen. Opening it, all thoughts of
breakfast left his head. Grabbing blindly for his chair he sat dumbly at the
kitchen table reading and re-reading the first page article. They know. Lucius
gave them the memories. He was cleared. It was all too much for him to get
through. He didn’t have to hide anymore. Truthfully he was a solitary man,
but now he didn’t have to think every step he took outside this house through.
He was cleared of everything. Total forgiveness.
Half
an hour later a delivery owl found Severus still sitting at his kitchen table
staring at yesterday’s Daily Prophet. Looking up Severus saw the owl perched
on the table next to him with the latest edition. Reaching over he removed the
paper, paid the owl and gave him some treats that he kept in the kitchen. He
just stared at the rolled up paper for the longest time. Did he dare open it?
What would today’s paper say? Gathering his courage, he unrolled the paper.
“NOOOO!”
Jumping up he grabbed his cloak and wand
and ran out of his house and apparated away.
Sitting
in his cell in Azkaban Prison, Lucius Malfoy greeted the guard who brought him
his “breakfast” and paper. Oh how he missed Canary’s breakfasts. She somehow
always new what he was in the mood for that morning. Many a times before he
did. But alas, it did not do anything to morn the past. He knew that the
Ministry believed him. It was in the paper yesterday. But he didn’t dare hope
that he could leave. The war was still on. Voldemort is still alive. That
means he still had a price on his head. He wouldn’t remain alive five minutes
outside these walls. He knew that. Someday. Harry Potter would win this
war. Walking over to the table he sat. After placing his napkin in his lap,
after all being in prison is no reason to let good manners slide, Lucius reached
for the paper. After reading the headline, Lucius jumped up, knocking his chair
over and ran for his door shouting “GUARD!!!”
