Chapter 4: Lessons
 The next
morning Helga went to Charms and met Professor Flitwick, the Charms teacher. He
took to her at once and Helga found the lesson enjoyable. They were learning a shielding
charm that would keep her opponent from being able to attack her. In Muggle
Studies Helga earned a detention when she told Professor Cloud that TVs didnt
suck peoples souls in.
 Can you believe
that she gave me detention for that, Helga growled. Like she knows anything
about muggles and she teaches the stupid subject.
Emily shook her head. She felt bad for her half-sister and
decided to tell her so.
 Helg, I feel for
you, Emily told her. Your smarter then that old wench and you could easily
teach the subject yourself.
 Like I dont know
that, Helga snapped. That woman is worse the Filch and thats saying
something. You know that remake of a horror classic thought that I was spying
on the school. Like theres anything in here that I would want to see.
Emily smiled at her. She loved it when Helga got railed up.
 So what are you
going to do?
 Serve the stupid
detention, Helga said. However, I might be able to get it with your father or
at least mine.
Emily rolled her eyes.
 Fat chance of that
happening, Emily said. Im sure that Filch will most likely oversee your
detention.
Helga looked a little disappointed.
 Well a witch can
wish, cant she.
 When the
bell rang Emily headed off to Herbology and Helga went to Arthemacy. Professor
Victor introduced her to the class and then got them started on some
complicated charts. Helga at once dived into this and was the first, and only,
person that turned theirs in before the bell had even rung. During dinner Emily
told Helga of the horrible plant that she had to do.
Bubotubers werent Helgas
favorite plant in the world, next to Devil Snare. She remembered during her
second year she had a strong case of first ache. Her godmother had used the pus
from the plant to cure her. However, no one would even go near her. She could
still remember her godfathers words.
 At least your nose
is dead center.
 So do you want
some? Emily asked, grinning. You dont want to get a break out and hex yours
off and your nose isnt dead center.
 Give some to dad,
he needs it, Helga said.
Emily grinned even more.
 Oh come on, not
scared of being a running mark.
 Oh shove off,
Helga snapped, returning to her food while Emily laughed her head off.
 The next
morning was exciting for Helga. She was finally going to have her first Potions
Lesson of the term. She always liked to be in Professor Snapes class as he
always made the lessons exciting and she had inherited her mothers gift for
potion brewing and her unused talent of shutting up. She at once took her place
at the front so that her godfather would miss how well she was doing her
potion. She then pulled out a shinny apple and placed it right on Snapes desk,
where he couldnt miss it.
 When
Professor Snape entered he at once noticed the apple and frowned. No one gave
him an apple, which left him to wonder if Malfoy was sucking up to him again.
However, Malfoy wasnt in the room so he couldnt have given it to him. He
shook his head mentally and then addressed the class.
 Today were making
a Shrinking Solution, he told them. I want all of you to make sure that this
is done right, as the effects will be most unpleasant if mixed wrong.
Helga raised her hand.
 Yes, Miss Lupin,
Snape said.
 Is it alright to
ask you for help if we dont understand how something is going to work? she
asked.
Snape stared at her. No one, not even his Slytherins, had
asked him that question.
 Um, of course,
Snape said.
 Thank you, sir,
Helga said. Im glad that youve answered that because I dont want to be the
cause of aaccident.
She looked at Neville when she said this and he grinned. For
a Gryffindor, she knew where to send her cheek to.
 Anymore questions?
No one said anything and Snape
figured that no one had any questions.
 Get started.
 Helga
looked at the board and then pulled her first ingredient out. She took care
when she was cutting them, as she didnt want to make a bad impression on the
Potions Master. Snape watched her cut each part of the root carefully and then
add it to her potion. She then used great care in making sure she added exactly
a dash of leach juice. He continued to watch her until the door opened and
Malfoy entered.
 Helga didnt
hear Draco enter, so focused she was on her potion. Suddenly she was knocked
into and her and too many caterpillars went into her potion. The potion started
to hiss and bubble and she at once went looking for the dragons blood. She
found it and added two drops, causing the potion to go back to what it was
before the accident. She rounded on Malfoy.
 YOU ALMOST CAUSED
MY POTION TO EXPLODE, she bellowed. HAS THAT ARM TURNED YOU INTO A REMEDIAL
OR ARE YOU LIKE THAT ALL THE TIME? YOURE LUCKY THAT I HAD DRAGONS BLOOD TO
STABLIZE THE POTION OR IT WOULD HAVE POISONED US ALL.
He stared at her, loss for words.
 OH I SEE THAT YOUVE
FINALLY HELD YOUR TONGUE.
He stared at her even more, but then regained his voice.
 What is this
muggle word, remedial?
Helga looked at him and then burst out laughing. Soon most
of the class was laughing at him.
 WHAT IS SO DAMN
FUNNY? Draco bellowed.
Helga grinned at him.
 It means that youre
retarded, Helga explained. Im sure youve heard that word before.
Draco went red.
 Im not retarded,
he snapped.
Helga gave him a nasty grin.
 In my books you
are, Helga said. And thats the only book that I look at.
 When Snapes
Potions class ended, he had to admit that he was impressed with Helga. She had
used Dragons blood which stopped her potion from causing a lot of problems. He
had to admit that she was talented and that she kept her mouth shut. Yet, he
wondered now what had caused her parents to leave such a gifted child behind.
He guessed that soon he would find out.
 Helga
told Emily what had happened in Double Potions and Emily had to admit that she
was deeply impressed. She always tried to act big, even if she didnt know it.
And she knew that by insulting Draco Malfoy she had instilled in him the same
respect that she had learned from not only her godparents, but from the memory
of her own parents. When the bell rang Helga joined the line of third years
heading to Defense Against the Dark Arts. Emily wished Professor Lupin all the
luck in the world.
 Helgas
Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson turned out to be
very interesting for not only Helga but the rest of her class. They were
learning how to defeat Boggarts and Helga just loved the way that her father
taught. She grinned, thinking that maybe there would be a way to get them
together. She just hoped that she stayed around for that.
