Chapter 4 - Losses
Harry awoke in excruciating pain. His strangled cry of agony quickly brought a figure to his bed in the Hogwarts infirmary as he curled into a fetal position. A hand gripped his and he clutched desperately at it, knowing it to be Severus'. The bed dipped as Severus sat down beside him.
"What's happening to me?" Harry ground out through clenched teeth.
"Poppy thinks your body is rejecting the fetus," Severus told him, his voice was soft and gentler than Harry had ever heard it.
Fetus? What fetus?
Pregnancy potion, remember?
Oh, yeah. That thing he kept trying not to think about. It was hard to overlook it now as pain tore through his body, radiating from his lower abdomen. Another pain hit and he locked his muscles against it.
Gentle fingers pushed the fringe off his forehead.
"Oh, God," he breathed as the pain subsided. " Cruciatus is nothing compared to this." He shifted to look into Severus' dark eyes. They were filled with concern. "What is she going to do?"
"They're preparing a room to do magical surgery," Severus said, his fingers sliding through Harry' damp hair. "They were going to move you to St. Mungo's but Poppy doesn't think there's time. There is a specialist on his way."
Harry could only nod as another pain hit. His entire body shook now and his hand, still tightly clasped with Severus', had an eerie unnatural glow to it.
"Oh, I say," a man's voice rose nearby and Harry felt Severus stand, although he didn't let go of Harry's hand. "You didn't mention that the patient was Harry Potter."
"Idiot," Severus muttered softly. Harry wanted to smile hearing it, but his jaw was clamped shut to keep from screaming.
The voices continued, as he lay curled, still clutching Severus' hand. Harry recognized Pomfrey's and Dumbledore's as they contemplated cutting Harry open.
Won't that be fun?
The stranger's face came into focus above him. "Mr. Potter," he began, "I am Healer Horatius Cato, a specialist in all aspects of male pregnancy." His voice was calm and informative, but not without sympathy. "You seem to have a magical battle going on within you. There are two possibilities - either the baby's magic is incompatible with yours, or there is more than one fetus and their magics are incompatible with each other."
Harry struggled to keep up with what the doctor was saying, but his concentration was wavering through the pain wracking his body.
"Either way, I'm afraid this pregnancy will have to be terminated," he said compassionately. "The conflicting magics just can't co-exist in a magical space without damaging your magic as well as deforming the developing fetus. Do you understand?"
Harry nodded, guilt overwhelming him. He hadn't wanted this child to begin with and now he had his wish. In self-defense, he wondered if the dark magic from his scar had something to do with it.
"I need your permission to operate," the medi-wizard said and Harry nodded. "And I'd like to speak to the other father."
Harry's eyes moved to Severus. The healer looked back and forth between them, realizing the connection, but if he was going to say something, he thought better of it.
"Very well. Madam Pomfrey, please prepare Mr. Potter for surgery. Professor Snape, if I may have a word."
As Harry's bed was levitated away, his fingers slipped from Severus' grasp.
*****
Severus watched the bed containing his love float away. Magical surgery was risky, no matter how skilled the doctor. The one before him was the best in his field, but it didn't relieve Severus' anxiety at all.
"Professor," the doctor in question said, regaining Severus' attention. "I'd just like you to know that there will be risks involved."
"I'm aware of the statistics, Healer Cato," Severus replied, grateful that his voice hadn't cracked with emotion.
Cato shook his head. "I've never seen such a volatile reaction before, and I'm not certain what to expect when I reach the womb."
"Considering Mr. Potter's magical power, I am not surprised."
The healer nodded thoughtfully. "Is there anything particular about the conception that I should know about?"
Severus sighed. Withholding anything from the medi-wizard could risk Harry's life. Severus would lay down his own first. He explained about the potion and the mysterious dark curse. Cato considered all the ramifications and finally nodded his understanding.
"Under the circumstances," Severus added, "considering who the patient is-"
Cato held up his hand, interrupting. "I assure you, my medical oath ensures complete secrecy."
Severus inclined his head. "I did not mean to offend, but…"
"I understand. And I do thank you for your candor."
Severus nodded and shook the man's hand.
"I'll do everything I can," Cato said.
Watching the doctor as he moved away to prepare for surgery, Severus swallowed. It was going to be a long night.
*********
Severus stood frozen, arms wrapped around himself, gripped with a fear he had never known. Even standing before the Dark Lord, worried that the Dark Lord would see through his defenses, and knowing his death would come slowly, he had never felt the kind of terror that had taken hold of his heart.
Why is he screaming?
Harry's screams permeated the door behind which he suffered, echoing around the ward and resounding within Severus' chest. His anguish reverberated in Severus' very soul, and he was flooded with a sense of impending loss, that which he would lose if Harry didn't make it through this night.
He knew that the very same sounds would come from him, should that ever happen-
Sudden silence settled around him, more devastating than the horrendous screaming preceding it and Severus moved quickly to the door in an effort to hear what was happing on the other side.
A crash and a shout rose from within.
"Albus, are you all right?"
Poppy's voice.
"Yes, Poppy."
"I've never seen anything like it before."
Cato, Severus recognized.
"Why isn't the sedative working?" Poppy demanded.
"The magic is too strong for the potion," the doctor replied hurriedly. "Just try to hold him."
Another scream rang from within the room, then eerie silence settled again.
******
Severus jumped back as the door opened. Albus emerged, looking tired and old, but Severus strained to look over his shoulder and into the room. Albus pulled him away.
"How is he?"
"It's too soon to tell, Severus." Albus moved across the room and slowly lowered himself into a chair.
"Are you all right?"
Albus nodded. "I'm afraid I had to lend a magical hand. Harry's magic being so strong…it would not release the babies."
Babies?
"Babies?" Severus gasped. "As in plural?"
So there were two fetuses.
"It really would be best if the doctor explained it. I would not wish to relay the incorrect information."
"Albus-"
Fortunately, the doctor emerged and Severus stood up, horrified at the blood soaking the front of his medical robe.
"Mr. Potter will be fine," the healer assured Severus. "Madam Pomfrey is finishing with him. He will need special care while he recovers though."
"What-?"
Cato held up a hand. "Please, Professor Snape. I think it would be more appropriate to wait for Mr. Potter before explanations are made."
Severus snarled. He wanted some answers. "When can I see him?"
"As soon as Madam Pomfrey settles him into a bed, I believe. He will sleep for while though. We've given him several potions to keep him calm and put him to sleep," Cato said. "He's physically and magically exhausted."
********
Severus moved to lean over Harry as he stirred. A small groan had alerted Severus to Harry's waking. Brushing the fringe off his pale forehead, Severus could feel the heat of his skin.
Fever? The healer didn't mention fever.
It seemed low-grade, but Severus would be sure to mention it to Cato. Harry's eyelids fluttered and Severus leaned close enough for Harry to see, unsure if the spell on Harry's vision would still be working.
"Severus?" Harry said, his voice gravelly.
Hours of screaming will do that.
Severus held Harry's head up and pressed a cup of water to his lips. Harry took several swallows and Severus gently laid him back down on the pillows.
"I'm sorry," Harry croaked.
Severus blinked. Sorry? Scowling, he was about to ask what the devil he was apologizing for until he noted the pain in Harry's expression. The normally bright green gaze was dull and moist.
Tears?
Severus stared. He couldn't recall ever seeing Harry cry. Not even when he'd broken Harry's heart had Severus heard anything resembling a sob.
"Harry, what are-?"
Pomfrey barged into the room with the finesse of a hippogriff, interrupting them. "Ah, good, Mr. Potter, you're awake," she stated the obvious. "I have your potions." Another obvious statement as she was carrying a tray with several goblets.
She shooed Severus out of her way and began waving her wand around Harry, hurrumphing and tsking as she went along. "Poor dear, it's always something with you, isn't it?"
Under her keen eye, Harry drank two of the four potions. "Healer Cato is on his way," she said.
Severus watched Harry as he settled back into the pillows, his gaze averted and his expression completely shuttered now.
Harry Potter mask number five.
Pomfrey's fussed with Harry's blankets and his pillows and Severus hoped the medi-wizard would be quick in arriving. It didn't look as if Harry could keep his eyes open for much longer.
Cato arrived in short order and, after repeating the series of diagnostics, he settled into a chair beside Harry's bed. Severus could tell that Harry was trying to give the healer his complete attention but between exhaustion and the potions, Severus doubted he was completely coherent.
The medi-wizard seemed to notice this as well and he began promptly. Cato's acumen lifted marginally in Severus' eyes. Severus paid close attention, knowing he'd have to repeat everything again - numerous times in all likelihood - for Harry.
"Mr. Potter, what happened is quite extraordinary," Cato began. "The fertility potion you took-"
"That I was manipulated into taking," Harry corrected.
At least he's paying attention.
"In whatever circumstances, Mr. Potter, you did assimilate the potion." Harry nodded and Cato went on. "The potion did its job perfectly. It created the womb and fused the necessary ingredients necessary to create the embryo."
"But how?"
"Magic, Mr. Potter," Cato said. "The same magic that sparked the first life form on Earth to live billions of years ago. It's as simple and as complex as that."
Harry seemed to consider that. Severus wondered if several new classes should be added to the schools curriculum judging by the ignorance that the students exhibited.
Cato went on. "Miraculously, a natural baby was conceived at the same time."
What?
"What?"
The healer spared Severus a smirk. "Yes, Professor. A natural conception occurred at the same time, creating its own womb and its own embryo."
Let's see the Headmaster give you any shite after this.
Severus was still trying to get his mind around it. A true love conception? He knew he loved Harry but didn't realize how poignant - how strong it was. It also meant that Harry loved him just as much in return.
He looked at Harry's confused expression and smiled. Harry blinked at him. Severus would be sure to explain later, but for now the healer continued.
"Both of the magics from these two separate but potent pregnancies fought for dominance. As they were two different types of magic, they couldn't - wouldn't coexist. I'm afraid the struggle within you would have, quite literally, torn you apart."
"What did you do with - um-?"
"The creation of a magical life is a very complex matter. With the help of the Headmaster, we were able to contain the magic, which should be released back to the elements. I'm sure you and Professor Snape will decide on that."
"What about the b-babies?"
Cato blinked. "Mr. Potter, you were only several weeks pregnant. The embryos themselves were less than a millimeter in length. It was the magic of their creation and sustenance within your body that caused the problem. Were you a woman, both embryos, even one from a fertility potion, would have grown in the womb as twins.
"But since they were magical conceptions and thusly resulted in magical complications," Cato continued, "there are now magical repercussions."
"And those are?" Severus prompted.
"His magical stores are drained and will need some time to recuperate."
"For how long?" Severus asked, trying to predicate Harry's questions.
"A few months," Cato speculated. "But - there is still some residual magic left from the embryos and that magic may manifest itself as large bursts of magic."
"Like wild magic?" Harry asked.
"No. It will more likely show when you try to cast something - the power will be multiplied. It will be erratic though. I would suggest you don’t attempt anything stronger than a Lumos for at least a week. Unfortunately, you'll have little to no magic available to you and when it does manifest, it will likely be out of your control."
"Great," Harry muttered.
Severus ran his hands through Harry's hair, trying to comfort him in some small way. Harry's eyelids began to droop and Cato ended their discussion.
******
Albus Dumbledore gasped. "A natural pregnancy, you say?"
"Yes, Albus. That's what Horatius said," Polly confirmed, nodding exuberantly.
Albus sighed. On one hand, he was trying to protect them, but on the other hand, he had been right in his initial opinion that they belonged together. If only his boys could get a break from fate and find happiness together.
"Are you listening to me, Albus?"
"I'm sorry, Poppy. Go on."
"I was saying that we must keep Harry at the castle. Without his magic - any magic - it's too dangerous for him outside."
Dumbledore frowned. It would indeed be unsafe for Harry, especially living alone, but how would he convince Harry, who had only recently earned his independence? Who was only now beginning to live his life as he chose? Especially after suffering a loss such as this?
Perhaps Severus would convince him.
*********
Harry was exhausted. Every bone, every muscle in his body ached. Movement alone was a chore more strenuous and taxing than defeating Voldemort had been. On top of that, there was the ache in his chest.
It wasn't your fault!
Deep inside he knew that, but he couldn't help going over every minute of the time after he'd heard about the potion. There was no way he could have known about the 'natural' conception. Harry knew that, though Severus' reaction to it puzzled him.
But he did know about the potion. And he'd done nothing. He hadn't taken care of himself, he'd imbibed like a sailor on shore leave and he'd completely disregarded his health, exposing himself to even more Dark magic. How could he have been so careless with a young life?
How could he have not wanted that life? Even if it were a result of trickery and manipulation, it would have still been his - and Severus's. And there was that. How could Severus ever forgive him for this?
Severus doesn't blame you.
He didn't seem to. Severus had hovered over Harry's bed after the healer had left, trying to stress the importance of Harry being careful with his magic. Harry didn't give a damn about his loss of magic. It was temporary. His other losses were so much greater. So much more permanent.
Severus had finally left a few minutes ago, having been summoned to the Headmaster's office. Harry was tempted to ask Pomfrey for a sleeping draught. He wanted to sleep - forever.
"So, this is what Malfoy did to breach the contract."
Harry turned his head, wincing at the pain, to see Sirius and Remus move to the foot of his bed. Sirius' voice was rough with concern. Remus also looked distraught.
"That's what he did, yeah," Harry replied softly.
"That bastard. I'll kill him."
In as much as Harry didn't really want to talk about it, he felt he needed to tell the truth. Severus, and their baby - babies - deserved it. "Sirius, it wasn't his baby."
Sirius took on a confused look, until realization set in. "You mean he gave you the potion but you slept with someone else?"
Harry nodded, wincing again.
"Which is what you did to breach the contract." Remus nodded, understanding. "That's why there were no penalties."
Harry nodded, slowly this time, waiting for the next question. He dreaded hearing it, and more so having to answer it.
"Who did you sleep with?"
There it is.
Harry squeezed his eyes closed, wishing it was a week from now and this was all behind them. Peering back up at his godfather, he saw only curiosity. It wouldn't last. Remus on the other hand looked as if he already knew.
Werewolf senses, idiot.
Oh, yeah. Remus probably did know.
"Sirius, Harry looks tired. Maybe, we should come back later," Remus suggested.
Unfortunately, Sirius wasn't stupid. He noticed the hesitation and glared at Remus for a moment before turning back to Harry. He gingerly took Harry's hand. "Harry," he said. "It's not going to matter who it is. Not anymore. It voided the contract…"
Sirius looked back and forth between them. "What aren't you telling me?" Harry bit his lip as Sirius' face took on a thoughtful expression, and then he stood up abruptly.
"Snape," he growled. "By all the gods and their bleeding fanatical whims," he swore, pacing away. "That's why Malfoy cursed him with such a nasty hex. He spoiled Malfoy's plans. Slept with his-" He spun back, his face contorting with a strange combination of horror and disbelief. "You slept with Snape?"
"Sirius," Remus said, trying to soothe his growing temper.
"Snape?" This time it sounded more like a roar.
With monumental effort, Harry looked away.
Sirius cursed again, rather colorfully and then halted mid-sentence. He leaned over Harry's bed, holding his face so he couldn't look away. "He's the one who hurt you after you killed Voldemort, isn't he?"
"Sirius," Remus pleaded.
Sirius ignored Remus, waiting for Harry to answer. Harry bit his bottom lip. He wanted to explain, but he didn't want to talk about it. His emotions were a mess right now and, even if he didn't want to listen to Sirius swearing and threatening to do awful things to Severus, he knew he would feel better once his godfather knew the truth. Still unable to speak, Harry nodded.
He closed his eyes as the tirade began, occasionally hearing Remus' pleas for Sirius to calm down, or to lower his voice. Harry rolled to his side, suppressing his groan, and pulled the blanket tighter. He was so bloody tired.
"Black, you insensitive clod."
That was rather tame for Severus.
Harry had to agree with his inner voice, but he didn't acknowledge Severus' presence either. He didn't want to listen to them shout, or cast hexes, or even physically brawl. He wished he had enough magic to toss them all out of his room.
"What are you shouting about, you flea-bitten mongrel?" Severus growled, moving closer. "And what have you said to upset Harry?"
"Me? You great bat, I'm not the one who seduced a student and-"
"So, Potter's come clean, has he?"
"Potter?" Sirius blustered. "You're fucking him and you still call him Potter?"
"What's the bloody difference what I call him, Black? And I'll ask again, what did you say to him?"
"Oh, for Merlin's sake, put your wands away. The two of you," Remus said.
Harry started shivering.
"I'll say anything I like to my godson, you greasy, perverted pedophile. And I won't need a wand to rip you limb from limb."
There was a blast and several crashes, but Harry didn't bother to look.
It's about time Pomfrey showed up.
But it wasn't Pomfrey. Dumbledore's voice was calm and even, yet deadly as he told them, "You will all leave Harry's bedside now, or you will regret it."
After some scuffling and muttering, Harry felt the bed dip again. A hand slowly dragged across his forehead, pushing his fringe aside, as if to expose his scar.
"Are you alright, Harry?"
Harry only nodded, although his eyes burned and his body still trembled. He kept his eyes shut tight.
"I will speak with them," Dumbledore promised.
*******
"This is all my fault."
Lucius stared down at Harry, wrapped tightly in his blankets on his bed, looking for all the world as if he wanted to touch Harry but dared not.
And he'd better not.
"I agree," Severus said. "If not for that damnable potion, Harry would not be here."
Lucius head snapped up and he caught Severus' gaze. "If not for the potion, Harry would still be mine."
Severus smirked. "Hindsight is sometimes a rather brutal reality to bear."
"I will make it up to him," Lucius said with a sneer. "He knows that my intentions were-"
"Where were your intentions when he was screaming in agony?" Severus challenged.
That certainly deflated his ego.
Lucius shoulders slumped and he turned back to Harry. "Had I known…"
"It's too late for that now," Severus said. He truly wished to rub Lucius' face in it but he wasn't sure if Harry was actually asleep. "Harry has to deal with yet another loss now."
Lucius nodded, his expression grim. "Thank you for telling me, Severus. I realize that you didn't have to."
"No, I didn't."
"I will call on Harry again when he is well enough," Lucius declared as he moved to leave.
"Oh, and Lucius," Severus called and waited until Lucius turned from the door. "The reason why Harry miscarried was because there was another conception."
"Oh?"
"Yes." Severus couldn't help his lip from curling upwards. "A natural one."
Oh, for a camera.
Lucius' expression certainly was fit for framing, but Severus left it at that. He just wanted Lucius out of Harry's life.
Wordlessly, Lucius turned and left. Satisfied, Severus settled himself in a chair beside Harry's bed. He desperately wanted to speak to Harry - make him understand, but Harry never woke up when they were alone.
When Harry was awake, half a dozen Weasleys or worse, Black and Lupin, always surrounded him. And Black could only marginally contain his contempt when they were in the same room. Severus persevered, restraining his own ire for Harry's sake.
Gently picking up Harry's hand, he pressed it to cheek. "Talk to me, Harry," he whispered. "What's going through that Gryffindor head of yours?"
********
Harry had had enough. He knew they were all conspiring to keep him at the castle but the pain was manageable now, and it was high time he resumed his life. Hell, he'd taken worse from Voldemort - when he was fourteen.
He would have to postpone the opening of his shop, but there was no urgency about that. Cassi and Millie would understand. And he'd missed a lesson with Bill.
Bill had understood about the delay. Gringotts hadn't given Bill a deadline for training Harry so there was no real pressure there either. They also needed to discover if his depleted magic stores would reflect in his ability to detect Dark magic on objects.
It didn't help that there were several different stories about Harry's confinement. Only a select few knew of the real reason. The press had been told that Harry had a magical allergy and his friends and family simply that Harry had miscarried. Harry, Severus, the doctor, Poppy and, Harry supposed, Dumbledore were the only ones who knew about the double conception.
Harry had been told that the Malfoys had visited but he'd been asleep at the time. He was grateful about that. Harry wasn't sure what he would've said to Lucius.
Sirius and Remus had visited again, treading very carefully on the topics they discussed - mostly plans for the future and Harry taking care of himself, especially with his lack of magic. Sirius had looked like he wanted to say more, but Remus kept a firm hand on his arms as if reminding him to keep quiet.
Avoiding Severus had been difficult. Even though he'd resumed going to classes, he still visited Harry in the evening. Usually, Harry had other visitors as well, which made it easier to endure. Whenever he'd come alone, Harry had to pretend to be asleep. Harry just didn't know what to say, how to feel. He wanted Severus to comfort him, but he was afraid that Severus blamed him, or that he blamed Severus. Either way, it didn't bode well for conversation.
Harry had finally given up looking for something to wear and called Dobby. He'd tried to send Dobby home to fetch him some clothes but the house elf said he "couldn't go to Harry Potter's house because Harry Potter's wards weren't letting Dobby in." Harry was somewhat smug about that. If a house elf couldn't get past his blood-wards then he would be perfectly safe and his bloody wardens couldn't bitch about him going home.
Dobby did manage to find Harry a set of clothes from somewhere in the castle. Dobby assured him they weren't stolen or otherwise nicked inappropriately, so Harry put them on.
He was trying to decide which Floo to use to get home, when a woman entered the hospital and moved directly to Harry's room. She was rather diminutive in stature and she had a round face and round glasses almost as thick as Harry's used to be. Pomfrey had reapplied the sight spell to his own eyes as soon as she'd considered him strong enough. It made Harry wonder why anyone would bother with glasses when it was easy enough to correct the problem.
"I'm Vera Valentinian," the woman said. "Are you leaving?" She peered around a bit nervously.
"Yes," Harry said.
"Can we have a little chat first?"
"About what?" Harry asked. He didn't want to take a chance having someone come in and trying to stop him. Without magic, he'd have little chance. He was feeling a little weak now too. "Who are you, anyway?"
"I'm a healer," she said with a smile. "Healer Cato sent me."
Harry slowly sat on the bed, curious. "Really?"
"Yes." Ms. Valentinian took a seat in one of the chairs near his bed. " I, too, have lost a child. It's painful and confusing and the guilt can be overwhelming."
Harry stood up abruptly. They'd sent a psychiatrist? "You have no idea what I feel," he snapped.
"Oh?" Her tone was curious, patient.
"You are a-a …and I'm a, well-"
"So, I don't know how you feel because you're a man who happens to have been pregnant?" she asked, raising her eyebrows.
"No, no," he said quickly, and gave himself a moment to think. "Tell me," he said, resuming his seat. "What do you think about before you have sex?"
Taken aback, she blinked. "I beg your pardon?"
"I'm serious," Harry insisted. "Humor me. If you are going to have sex with someone, what are your concerns? That you love them?"
She smiled indulgently. "Yes."
"You trust them?"
"Yes."
"You want to have a baby with them?"
"Ah, I see," she said, finally understanding. "You mean do I ensure that I'm protected?"
"Yes. Do you?"
"Of course."
"Exactly," Harry declared.
"I don't-"
"I never had to think about such things," Harry argued. At her surprise, he added, "not because I'm careless, but because I prefer men. The only woman I ever slept with was a prost- a professional. I had no idea that there was even a chance that I might become pregnant. I don't have the right equipment, right?"
"You never knew wizards could become pregnant?" She looked surprised.
"No," Harry insisted. "On top of that I was given a male fertility potion without my consent. I'm tired of being lied to and manipulated." Harry's resolve strengthened with his own words. "I've been hunted by Voldemort, faced him and finally killed him. I've fulfilled my obligation. I just want to go on with my life."
"Mr. Potter, I know you're a private man but you really need to face some of these challenges that you've been forced to deal with."
"I have faced them. They're over - done. I'm not going to dwell on them." Harry flinched at the sadness in her eyes. "Look, Doctor, I know I'm probably completely messed up so I don't need anyone else to tell me that. I'm looking ahead now. Isn't that good? Moving forward? I have plans and prospects now, and choices that I - me - Harry Potter, will get to make for myself.
"And one of those choices is to get out of here now, before it's too late. No offense, Ms. Valentinian, but I'm fine."
"And what about your magic?"
"My magic will come back. Healer Cato told me that. Until then, my flat has wards on it that even the headmaster would have trouble getting through. I'll be perfectly safe there."
She gave Harry her card. "If you ever want to talk," she said.
After she left, Harry called Dobby again and Dobby was more than happy to take Harry to a Floo he could use. His determination stronger than ever, Harry tossed down the Floo powder and said, "Harry Potter's flat."
********
"He's in complete denial," Vera told the group assembled in Headmaster Dumbledore's office. "He left, by the way."
"What do you mean, he left?" Severus asked sharply.
"He was dressed when I went in. He said he was leaving."
One firecall to Pomfrey confirmed that Harry was indeed gone.
"He's a headstrong young man," Valentinian said. "And I do believe he has issues about his loss."
Severus shook his clenched fist. Damned idiot boy! They hadn't even had a chance to talk. He could tell from the moment Harry had opened his eyes that morning that something was wrong. And now he's gone.
Reminds me of a time not long ago. Should have tied him to the bed.
"He has no magic," Minerva pointed out. "He couldn't Apparate. Maybe, we can catch him."
"He could have taken a Floo," Albus said. "Any number of them could have been used."
"He closes his Floo to only himself whenever he leaves the apartment," Severus said.
"So, no one can get in?" Albus asked, curiously.
"Er, no Albus. I'm afraid I taught him how to do blood wards."
The Headmaster sighed, his relief apparent. "At least he is well protected."
