Chapter
4: A Seer
I
can still remember the letter I sent to Harry. Our first exchange
ever. A sweet memory, but so sweet it almost tastes bitter at the
end. Because it announced a change so big I could never, at the time,
had imagined. Maybe if I hadn't written to him, he would have
forgotten all about this foolish girl he had met, pretending to be
someone.. Maybe we would never have seen each other again. And this
is a sad thought. Because I would have missed most of my life. I
would have barely lived at all, if I had had no knowledge of the
world I had been meant to live in since the lineage existed. But I
had been so well protected that my life hadn't even tasted anything.
Harry had delivered me, offered me something new, and I had jumped.
Without knowing where the other side of the gap was, or what I would
find there. I just jumped. And today I'm glad I did.
Dear Harry,
I
hope you're alright with your relatives as they didn't seem easy when
you had them on the phone. During our fist meeting, I didn't learn a
lot about you, and even in my dream you didn't quite talk about
yourself. Why is that? I am curious to know a bit more about you. I
would fancy seeing you again as soon as possible, because I... I have
this strange feeling about you Somehow I know you will have an
important place in my life. Anyway, fix the date and time to your
liking.
Lena
PS:
Hedwig scared the hell out of my father this morning but except for
that she is behaving. What a sweet owl!
It
was true: I couldn't wait: his face had been present in my mind ever
since I met him, even though my friend Liz was trying to distract me,
I just kept thinking and disconnecting from the world. These sad,
green eyes kept passing in front of my eyes. The owl was nice, she
liked to peck my fingers, nicely of course. I just hoped Harry
wouldn’t miss her too much.
Soon,
I got Harry's answer.
Lena,
Meet
me today, 4 O'clock in Old London, Preman Street, number 28. If you
see a café there, then get in and sit. If not, wait for me in
front of number 30. Do not reply to this letter and be very careful.
Please bring Hedwig.
Sorry
for the short notice, I'll explain when I see you. It seems that the
facts about your identity had been discovered, you are in danger,
don't stay alone.
Harry
What
did he mean by "the facts about your identity had been
discovered" ? Did he mean that everybody now knew I was, well I
thought I was, this Dumbledore man's relative ? Something I myself
wasn't even sure of?
And
who were these people he was talking about: who could possibly want
me harm without knowing me? Oh, yes, these men from the dark side as
they called it. God, I really had to remember everything from this
new world, otherwise I'd get lost... So there are sneaky nasty men
after me because they learnt I was the Light side leader's last
living relative. Ok.
"What
the hell did I get myself into ?!" I asked myself out loud. The
owl heard me and made a funny noise. I laughed. "Yes, you're
right. I'm going crazy." I replied.
Looking
at the time showing one o'clock, I went downstairs and joined Father
and Liz for lunch. The maid was on her day off so I served everyone.
This finished, Liz and I decided to have a look to my mother's diary
in my room.
The
cover was beautiful. It was dark blue, but when you moved it the
cover's colour kept changing. It was sparkling and covered with
pieces of dark velvet and glittery material. It looked oddly like an
old, several hundreds of years old book, the pages were yellow and
the strangest thing was it smelt like old book, soil and... sun?
I
opened it carefully and read on the first page:
'This
is the property of Anna Dumbledore, daughter of Vivian and Albus
Dumbledore, born on the 18th of November 1945. I got this diary for
my 16th birthday from my Father. My mother died when I discovered the
world, living me orphan with only my father, who I love. He taught me
everything I know, except for one thing that my mother did: lesson
number one, life is the more precious gift, do not waste it.
However, I never got to know my mother's past and lineage.'
-
"Did you know that your grand mother died giving birth to your
mother?" Asked Liz quietly.
-"...
No." I answered softly. "No, I didn't. That's kind of...
weird, is it not? My grand mother, then my mother. I do hope I will
not fall pregnant anytime soon." I added bitterly.
A
silence filled the room. A heavy silence. I looked up to see what was
wrong. Liz was looking pathetic.
-"
I don't understand what is all this about, Lena. First this boy you
jump on, then this strange meeting you absolutely want to have with
someone you don't even know, and this story with your mum.. it's
annoying, I feel really stupid, you know, because I can't follow.
It's boring to be kept out of thing."
-"Well
it's not my fault I can't share all of it with you, this is too
important to tell anybody, and there is nothing wrong with my mum!
It's not my fault, nor hers, if she died."
-"That's
the thing, I'm not anybody ! I'm supposed to be your best
friend, for God's sake! I should be the first person to know
everything, but no you decided to keep it a mystery and discuss I
don't know what with this boy !"
-"I'll
have you know that this boy, as you call him, isn't just any
boy !"
-"And
how can you possibly know that? You don't even KNOW him !! You've met
him for 2 hours and already you speak like you've known him for ages!
What did he do to you?"
-"JUST
LEAVE US ALONE, LIZ ! THIS IS NONE OF YOU BLOODY BUSINESS !!!" I
screamed.
I
breathed heavily and got away from her grip.
"You
have no right to speak like that about him. You're just bloody
jealous. Get out of my sight" I finished in a cold, angry
whisper.
How
dared she do that to him! He could seriously hurt her if he wanted:
he was a wizard. these were things that didn't concern her.
This
was my family, my grand dad maybe, all my mother's side I had never
met, and they maybe were wizards and witches ! It couldn't possibly
tell her that, it was so... intimate. This was Harry's secret and
mine.
I
decided to get ready for Harry's meeting. I pulled out my mother's
necklace and put it on. It was glowing nicely, a bit light actually.
I wondered for a second if it was magic, but that thought passed by
quickly.
I
changed into a black dress with small straps on the shoulders. It was
a bit big because I hadn't found the good size, but I had really
wanted it so it was two size too big.
I
always used to dress very carefully when I wasn't sure of myself
because a lot of people didn't like my character or my temper, and I
though that at least they would like my body.
'So
beautiful, but a real bitch, this girl' people used to say about me.
They wouldn't think any better about it after that because I would
hit them or insult them harshly. I didn't like people bothering me.
But
this would not happen because I had felt at ease and chatty with
Harry last time, and I didn't think he would judge me or anything.
And I figured that he appreciated me surely because he wanted to meet
me again.
I
got out of the house without meeting anybody on my way and went to
the nearest train station. Checking the timetables, I waited for the
train a few minutes and got to central London, to the address Harry
had given me. Walking on the street, I neared the number the wizard
had given me. It reminded me that I had to actually check if it
existed, as he had told me in the letter. Arriving in front of the
right place, I had a look. There were 2 big old houses joined by a
high wall. Nothing between them. I walked a little further to see if
maybe it was the next junction, but there was nothing at all. Coming
back, I felt something warming up against the skin of my neck, but I
heard a loud, low noise and raised my head, distracted. What I saw
was unbelievable. The two houses had teared apart, leaving place to a
small, wooden door to apparate between them. It was very old. I took
a step towards it, unsure.
I
put a hand on my necklace and the other was playing with my handbag a
bit nervously.
As
nothing else happened, I took another step and slowly climbed the 3
or so stairs leading to the old door. I put a hand on the handle and
turned it, opening the door.
And
I had sworn I would never, ever, forget the sight that had been
offered to my eyes at this moment. It had been my first contact with
the wizarding world, and I had been amazed. I had wanted so much at
that moment to become one of them. I would have given anything. But I
hadn't known at that time that this world had not been so foreign to
me, after all. It should have been a part of life, if my father
hadn't been such a coward, if he had fulfilled my mother's wishes
properly. Maybe he hadn't understood them, being the muggle he had
been. But my secret life was soon to be discovered anyway, by these
people I thought so strange, and I was never to be anonymous again. I
had always been, after all destined to great things. Since the very
start.
The
creaking opened door showed me lots of people in a kind of pub.
Except
they weren't normal people, and this was certainly not a normal pub.
People
there were all wearing some kind of dresses, robes I would say, women
wore sort of dresses with thin, long cloaks or robes over them.
Their
drinks were nothing I knew, small sticks turning in by themselves,
the pictures and paintings on the wall were moving, owls were flying
in and out of windows, and a man just got out of a fireplace
in very green flames. Wow.
I
must have looked completely bewildered and flabbergasted because
some people, witches for that matter, suddenly turned their heads and
stared at me, examining from head to toe. I felt, well, uneasy,
because for the first time in my life, I wasn't fitting with the
place. I was apparently not enough to wear a Cacharel dress. 'Well,
you have to excuse me, I don't own any of these robes...' I
thought.
-"Lena
!" someone called. I turned my head, and saw Harry. He was also
wearing a robe, thrown on jeans and a sweater I could guess. His hair
looked like he hadn't brushed them for a year or so. It was very
messy and very.. dark. But it was clean, and I liked that.
I
still felt uneasy because now, even more people were looking at me,
at us. These witches were now staring angrily and looked appalled
that Harry was talking to me, apparently.
-"What
are you staring at !" I asked in a bored voice.
Let's
give it some style. Harry shot a surprised look at me, I
shrugged. The witches were now whispering furiously, and one of them
said:
-"Come
on, Pansy, let's go somewhere decent. First Potter, then a
muggle, we really can't trust this place to be presentable."
-"Yes,
you're right, that Potter is a nuisance, and muggles shouldn't be
allowed in here. Actually, I don't even think they are."
another one answered, shooting a dirty look at me.
I
looked up and saw a very ugly girl about 17 years old, dressed in
pink, looking down at me. 'So, she thinks she is superior? I'll show
her a piece of my mind, then'. I felt very mutinous and needed
someone to take my anger and bad temper on. That was perfect. 'sorry
Harry' I thought.
-"
Hello, I'm Anna Dumbledore, nice to meet you, Miss..?" I asked
in a sure, polite voice to the poor little wretch.
She
apparently lost her voice, for she kept trying to speak without being
able to. Her friends looked the same. I felt that this little bit of
information had come as a real unexpected surprise, a bad surprise if
they were on the... let's say, the dark side of this war.
-"Pansy
Parkinson." Harry replied in a calm voice.
-"Well,
Miss Parkinson, you do know it's not convenient not to answer
a question when asked? For your information, I am no more a muggle
than you are, and am a friend of the very respectable Mr Potter here.
I think that the only indecent person in this place would be you, so
will you please get out ?"I finished, looking very serious and
authoritarian, pointing at another door of the large room.
I
had perfectly no idea where it led and hoped it wasn't the toilets.
The
girl trembled a bit, but said nothing. She just took her bag, threw
some weird money on the table and led the 2 other girls to the door I
was pointing, muttering in her breath to her nearest friend.
I
put my arm down and forced myself to calm down a bit. I hadn't spoken
loud so the entire scene had passed unnoticed. Fortunately. I turned
and faced Harry, fixing my hair a bit with my fingers.
-"Do
people always do what you tell them to do ?" He just asked.
-"No."
I answered. " Sorry about that, she was getting on my nerves.
Let's sit ?"
-"Yeah,
sure."
Inside,
I was thinking that she had believed me, so I mustn’t have looked
too much like a muggle. After all, wizards and witches could wear
normal occasionally, couldn't they?
We
sat at a table and simply looked at each other. There was this weird
silence that neither of us wanted to break first. I, quite
unconsciously, check him out. He looked fine, I like he way his hair
was falling in his eyes. He was wearing big, very big black trousers
and a green tee-shirt.
-
"Harry. Please, tell a bit more about yourself. Who were your
parents? Why do you have to live with people who hate you?"
-"My
parents were Lily and James Potter. They met at school, Hogwarts that
is. They fought for the light side."
-"Wait,
what do you mean by the light side?"
-"Our
world is at war. Not all wizards are good. One wizard turned bad some
50 years ago. His name is Voldemort. People are dead scared about
him. He committed hundreds of murders, crimes, and is accompanied by
his followers, named the Death Eaters.
My
parents were working for a very secret organization called the Order
of the Phoenix, which goal was to stop Voldemort from destroying the
Muggle World and killing all the muggle-borns and half-bloods witches
and wizards from our world. They believe in the purity of the
wizarding blood, you see.
When
I was one-year old, my parents were both murdered whereas I survived
Voldemort."
-"Oh,
that's where the Boy-Who-Lived come from !"
-"Yeah.
Everybody call me that. When I arrived at Hogwarts as a First-year. I
didn't even know that. I didn't know I was famous, and even less
why."
-"So
your aunt and uncle took you in?"
-"They..
had to. I was placed there by Dumbledore. He said that the blood ties
would protect me."
-"What
blood ties ?"
-"My
aunt has my mother's blood. And I was famous because while surviving
Voldemort, I destroyed him. My mother died protecting me, and the
curse used to kill me rebounded and killed Voldemort. If my mother
protected me, then my aunt can protect me as well."
-"But
protect you from what, if Voldemort was killed?" I asked a
little loud. This story was incredible. But at Voldemort's name,
people in the pub suddenly jumped or stood, or stared at me angrily.
I felt a bit surprised by this sudden reaction.
-"Don't
say his name too loud, people hate it." He whispered to me.
-"Oh
! Ok. But why, then?" I asked again, referring to my last
question.
-"Only
his body died from the curse, but his soul remained." He
answered. He bent down and looked at me in the eye. "Listen,
what I'm going to tell you is very secret so keep quiet."
He
took out his wand and said:
-"
Muffliato ! " I didn't know what it did, as nothing
apparent happened. But Harry continued on his explanations.
-"
He separated his soul in several pieces, and hid them in different
places. So when he died, there were other parts of his soul still
remaining and he kind of lived. It's complicated ! So I've got to
find the other pieces and destroy them, so I can kill the real
Voldemort who returned a few years ago. This task was given to me,
and Dumbledore, well, taught me all of it. He was helping me with it.
But now..." he finished in a small voice.
"But
he is going to pay for all he did." he added coldly.
-"Dumbledore
was murdered, wasn't he?" I asked in a soft voice, and drew
closer, touching his arm.
Bad
thing.
The
contact made the air suddenly turn and everything sort of froze. I
felt very compressed and my vision went black. Still conscious, I
abruptly had my vision back, but what I saw wasn't the ordinary
scenery I had just left.
A
very high tower, in a large castle. Lots of lightening, voices,
sounds. An old, white bearded, man wearing grey silvery robes and ..
Harry, coming on the top of the tower by the mean of.. broomsticks ?
The
ancient looked ill and very tired. Asked Harry to get a Professor and
as the young man was going near the door, he took out his wand and
sent a spell at him, while the door opened suddenly.
All
this happened very quickly and as Harry had frozen behind the door,
leading out of the top of the tower, I thought, another teenager came
out of the door. He was pale and had white blond hair. He was holding
his wand as well, and used it to disarm the old man. They started
talking and the old man looked more and more ill. The blond guy was
quite enthusiastic but the old man suddenly said something and he
changed bizarrely: he calmed down and seemed to realize something.
Harry was still behind the door, unseen.
Suddenly
the door burst open again and several men entered at once the small
platform. They all wore long, large black cloaks and white masks. I
thought they were quite scary-looking. One of them came nearer the
old man, who apparently said something that made them all laugh.
The
evil looking man had long hair that could be seen hanging out of the
mask. He suddenly took out his wand, pushing the blond young out of
the way, and sent a curse at the bearded old man, who flew up in the
air. I felt myself following his trace, even thought it appeared I
didn't have any body. The old man was ejected from the tower and we
both fell, fell even quicker, down the tower and towards the ground.
The wizard fell heavily on the ground, at the foot of the stoned wall
of the tower.
I
came nearer and studied his face, feeling a bit shaken.
He
was dead, but his body didn't seem to be affected in any way by the
fall. He strangely look like someone familiar. I was sure now. I had
seen the man elsewhere. His eyes were familiar for a first. It was
easy, I had the same ones, as my mother had, I remembered from the
pictures. I didn't know from where I had seen this man, though.
I
felt everything turning again, and quickly felt something hard on my
back. I opened my eyes, and found I was lying on the floor. How did I
get down there ?
-
"Lena, are you alright ?" a voice asked. I turned my head
and sat. Harry was speaking to me. I stood and sat back on my chair.
-
"Y-Yeah, I'm ok." I answered. I was a bit out of breath.
Every
head in the pub was now looking at me. Apparently, they weren't used
to see people faint in there.
-
"Come on, let's go." said Harry, standing up. He made a
gesture to help me up, but I stopped him, silently.
We
made our way towards the door I had showed to the other stupid girl,
and Harry opened the door. We were standing in front of a large wall.
-
"Err, are you sure this is a way out ?" I asked.
-
"Yes, don't worry. Just watch." He answered, chuckling.
He
took out his wand, and tapped several stones in a special order. The
wall suddenly moved and opened a kind of door. We walked out and once
again I found myself in a.. an amazing place. A bit like a giant
shopping street, for a wizarding one.
Harry
gestured a little green park on our left, and once there, we sat on a
bench.
-"
What happened ?" he asked immediately. "Normally, it's me
who faints in front of everybody!" He added, smirking slightly.
-"
Well, when I patted your arm, something weird happened. I felt all
dizzy, and suddenly I was somewhere else. I promise you, everything
was spinning and moving, and I was on the top of a tower, in an
enormous castle. You know," I said, realizing something
suddenly, "I think I actually witnessed the death of this
man you told me about, Albus Dumbledore." That's why he looked
familiar! "I shrieked. "He is a relative".
-"
You had a... a vision ? You saw it happen ?! Are you a.. are you a
Seer ?" He asked looking completely bewildered.
-"
What's a seer ?"
-"
It's someone who is good at divination. No, I'm joking. A Seer is
someone who can see some parts of the future, the past, the present,
who can make prophecies, who can see in a crystal ball.. Someone who
had the Inner Eye, as my divination teacher would say."
-"
You study divination ? WOW ! and you think I'm a Seer ? I bet it's
very common in the Wizarding World."
-"
No it's not. It's a very rare gift. The last one was Cassandra
Trelawney, that's got to be like 200 years ago ! And the first one
known was one of the four founders of Hogwarts, she was Rowena
Ravenclaw."
-"
Rowena Ravenclaw ? That's funny, the name rings a bell."
-"
You know this name? But she was a witch, how could it be possible for
you to.."
-"
I don't know. I don't remember from where I heard about it anyway."
I cut in, looking at a large tree. I had never seen a tree like that
before. Fluffy, that was the word.
-"Lena,
this is important, if you're a Seer, you have to hide even more.
Nobody must know. Imagine, this could be very useful to Voldemort ! A
Dumbledore, and a Seer ! You know what, I think I should introduce
you to the Order."
-"
What order ?"
-"
The Order of the Phoenix, you know, the one I told you about."
-"
I don't know.. Maybe ?"
-"
Look, I've got to go to the lecture of Dumbledore's will. It's in
Gringott's, the Bank. Do you want to come. Maybe we could learn
something useful."
-"His
will? But if I'm his relative, then there will be my name on it,
that's sure ! Yeah, let's go."
-"
But if he didn't know he had a living relative, then we'll never
know. Let's go anyway."
We
moved from the bench, but as we were heading to the way out of the
park, we saw that four boys, and several girls, all around 18 years
old, who were standing in the way and looking dangerous.
I
looked at Harry silently. I had recognized one of the girl, she was
the one I had asked to leave. Her friends were with her. I could see
she had gone to get her mates. Not so brave, after all.
-"Err,
Lena, we're gonna have a bit of trouble. These are all the Slytherin
in my year, at Hogwarts, and all supporting Voldemort. Gringott's is
at the end of the Street you saw. It's safe, so if we are split, go
there, Ok ? And take care." He whispered. He then took his wand
out, and yelled:
-"
For Dumbledore !!!!"
And
we charged.
And
there I was, involved in my first fight. It had allowed me to get rid
of all the tensions, all the feelings I had starting to keep in when
I had recognized the boy I was with. I had become close to him in no
time, but already I had started to put some distance with the world I
had lived in. With my friend Liz. I never heard from her again. And
she never knew about vampires. I had been slipping away from my dad's
grip, from the oh-so-perfect world I had been supposed to fit in, and
I had been glad of the change. But much more was yet to come. Yes,
much more...
