Chapter 4 Jane’s first day at Hogwarts. Glow of the Unicorns
Albus Dumbledor rose from his chair as professor MacGonagall tapped a spoon against the side of her glass.
“Attention please!” “Headmaster?”
“I will not detain you for long. I know you must be hungry after your first morning of classes. We have a guest staying with us at present and I hope that you will all help to make her feel at home during her stay with us.” Thinking ’For quite some time I hope.’ “Please welcome Miss Jane White.”
When Jane heard this she went as red as a beetroot. ‘Oh God. Everyone is looking at me.’ She kept her head down and studied her hands in her lap, leaning a little against the potion master. The staff were politely applauding and a few of the students followed suit. She stayed that way until the head master said “Grubs up.”
She was startled when the table in front of her was suddenly laden with food. Dishes full of steaming mashed, boiled and roast potato. Plates of beef, pork, and chicken. More dishes containing various vegetables. Jugs of gravy and sauces. She had never seen so much food in her life.
When she looked up she noticed that all the tables were full of food just like this one. And everyone was eating. Not only were they eating, they were talking as well. ‘Wow. Aunt Aggie would have walloped her if she had spoken at mealtimes.‘ She peered up and down the table she was sitting at to see that the staff too were happily filling their plates or eating all chatting to each other. ‘All but the vampire that is.’
“Eat up dear. Just help yourself.” Minerva told her.
She did not need telling twice. She began to pile food onto her plate. So much so that it was falling of the sides of it.
Severus raised an eyebrow as he watched her out of the corner of his eye. “Perhaps you could just put your food directly onto the table. Then you would not have to worry about it falling off your plate.”
Her face went red again and stopped, keeping her head down so that no one would see the tears she was now trying to hold back.
“Severus. Leave her alone. Jane, carry on at eat what you will. It is good to see a healthy appetite. Please, do not feel embarrassed.” Then she leaned close to her and whispered, “take no notice of misery guts there.”
Jane couldn’t deny that the food looked and smelled wonderful. She looked at Snape, well scowled actually. He scowled back.
“Meany” She said to him before tucking into her food.
“Pig” He replied.
“Vampire” She shot back round a mouthful of mashed potatoes. Causing some of it to spray out of her mouth and onto his robes.
“Disgusting little street urchin.”
“Yeh, but I give a damn good wedgie though don’t I.”
Severus glared at her. He wanted to tell her to fuck off. But she just turned back to her food with a silly grin on her face and carried on eating.
The pupils sitting nearest to the head table had heard the exchange between Snape and the new girl. This caused more giggling to erupt at the tables as they passed on what had happened.
Snape had had enough. Pushing his plate aside he stood and turned towards the staff door so that he could head down to his dungeons. Automatically, Jane got up to follow.
Snape turned to her. “Miss White, I have classes to prepare for and do not require your assistance. Especially from you. Please, return to your seat. You obviously feel the need to devour everything available.” With that he turned and marched through the door, leaving an extremely embarrassed Jane gaping at the space where the potions master had been only a moment before. Not too sure what to do now she turned to Professor MacGonagall, who smiled at her and patted the seat where Jane had been sitting.
“Don’t worry Miss White. Professor Snape is just reverting to type. He is that way with everyone. Carry on with your lunch and think nothing more of it.”
Albus leaned towards Minerva. “I must say, she really did put one over on him did she not?”
“She certainly did. I don’t believe I have ever seen anyone speak to Severus in such a manner. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” Minerva and Albus could not keep the smiles from their faces.
So it was that a much more sedate Jane sat back at the table. She picked at her food now. Appetite gone. Watching the students from under her lashes, she knew they were laughing at her. ‘I wish I had never come here. They all think I’m a fool.”
What Jane did not know was that she had become something of a hero in the eyes off many off the students. Especially the Griffndors. Ron had decided he was in love. He turned to Neville. “Wonder when she’s gonna get sorted. I hope the hat puts her in Griffindor. We could use someone like her.”
“Yes, and we would soon loose every house point we have.” Hermione shot at him.
Harry grinned. “Yeh! It’d be worth it though, just to see the look on old greasy git’s face each time she gives him a showing down like that. She‘s kinda pretty too.”
“She’s more then pretty.” Ron told him through a mouthful of food. Wonder how old she is?”
Similar conversations were going on at the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw tables. Slytherin were not quite so kind. They were looking at her suspiciously. They were not happy about how she had treat their head of house. Moreover, one of sixth year in particular was covertly watching the girl sitting at the head table. ‘Hmm. I think I will send a letter to father this evening.’ Draco Malfoy had a feeling that their was something very, very special about Miss White. Whether it was a good something or a bad something he did not know. But he was determined to find out.
As the students and teachers left the hall to go to classes Jane was back in the headmasters office.
“I’m sorry.”
“Whatever for/”
“For upsetting the vam…..er.. professor Snape. I made him really angry and he hates me more then ever now. If you can get me my clothes back I can be out of here ever so quick. You won’t have to see me again.”
“Ah! Do not worry about professor Snape my dear. I can tell you that he will not be dwelling on it. As far as you leaving us, although we shall not make you stay here, I sincerely hope that you will. We shall of course endeavour to make your stay with us as comfortable as possible. Jane! Please. We want you here.
“Er…you do!? Why? I…I mean. Why?”
“You are a very special young lady Jane and you have a great gift. Several actually. Gifts that I do not believe have ever been bestowed upon anyone before.”
“What gifts?”
“This evening when professors Snape and MacGonagall meet with us, I shall explain as best I can. Until then, I think that maybe it is time you started to meet some of our students and some of the staff. Each day you shall attend a different class, see what we do here, discover some of what our world is about.” She paled. “Do not worry, I shall accompany you during these classes. You will have a chance to make friends and discover things that you have never dreamed possible.”
First off was magical creatures. They walked across the lawns towards the Forbidden Forest where the vampire had first found her. That night seemed a lifetime away. In reality it had been less then twenty-four hours. Walking past the hut that was Hagrid’s home and round to the back to the edge of the forest she could see a group of children standing next to a paddock. The boys stood a little way back from the girls. They were all in the same age group as herself. They just looked older. All of them were gathered around the biggest man she had seen in her life. He was enormous and she vaguely wondered if there was a beanstalk nearby.
“Hagrid? Hagrid?”
The giant man turned around and saw Dumbledor and Jane stood a little way back. Walking toward them he greeted them. “Oh! Ello Professor, and¾
?”
“Hagrid. Just the man. Allow me to introduce Miss Jane White.”
“Ello Jane.” Hagrid held his hand out to her.
Jane however had other idea’s. As soon as Hagrid had taken his first step in their direction she had shot behind the headmaster, holding onto his bright yellow robes and peeking round at the colossal figure in front of them, her eyes as wide as saucers.
“Jane, come forward. Hagrid is a kind and gentle person. He would not let any harm come to you.”
Stepping round, but staying close to Dumbledor, she peered up into a pair of eyes that were so kind, they belied the look of the man they belonged to. “Hello.” Her voice came out in a squeak as she took Hagrid’s hand and he began to pump it up and down, Smiling at her as he did so.
She was bouncing so much with each shake of his hand that she didn’t notice the magic that was transferring across to her, as it had from others, from this gentle giant.
“S’ really nice ter meet ya. We got some unicorn foals terday. D’ya wanna see ‘em?”
After seeing her uncertainty, Albus gave her a gentle nudge and she followed Hagrid as he went back to the paddock.
As they approached the students moved back a little, not wanting to get stood on by Hagrid but wanting to get a closer look at the girl.
“Huh! What do you reckon? Muggle or Mudblood! And look at how she is dressed. I wonder who’s bin she savaged those clothes from.” He laughed nastily along with his friends.
These whispered comments came from a tall boy with white/blonde hair and a handsome face.
Jane had heard him though she did not know who had spoken, and looked own at herself. The nurse had brought her some nice clothes to wear and she couldn’t explain how they had changed to an outfit identical to the one that had arrived in. Professor MacGonagall had tried several times to change them back, but it would only last for a moment and then they would change back again. She wasn’t too bothered. If there were any Uncle Pete’s around here she did not want them to notice her. Still, the comments had made her feel a bit uncomfortable.
The feeling did not last long when she saw what Hagrid had been talking about.
“Oooh!” They really were unicorns. Three of them. The girls had been stroking them but, as Jane approach the fence they moved towards her. Much to the disappointment of Hermione Granger, Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil. The foals gently nudges against her, each of them vying for her attention and blowing softly into her hands and neck. As they were touching her a soft silver shimmer had begun to radiate from the foals, spreading and encompassing Jane along with it. She did not notice it, being so enthralled with these beautiful creatures. But others had. Nor did she hear the gasps that came from the students as they stared at the scene in front of them. Even Malfoy was enchanted as they all watched to see what would happen. Just as Hagrid was about to step forward the glow started to fade. As it disappeared the foals stepped back and returned to the other girls who were grouped close by.
Jane was feeling absolutely elated at this moment. She could not explain why she felt this way, but she did. Turning towards the headmaster, she felt rumbling below her feet.
Hagrid suddenly found his voice. He had a pretty good idea what was causing that rumbling. And it wasn’t good. “Okay boys an girls. Th’ lessons over. Les’ av yer all back in the castle, now.”
The rumbling got louder and the students began to move away. But they did not go far before the cause of the rumbling appeared through he trees and stopped.
Standing there were two, full grown unicorns.
Hagrid looked worried. “O¾
oh! This is not good. No, this is not good at all. All of you, get behind me. Move slowly an don’ make any noise.”
Albus stayed where he was, and Jane, taking her cue from him, did the same. She had no idea why. It just felt the right thing to do.
Unicorns, full grown ones anyway, did not normally come out into the open like this. They were not partial to open spaces. And they certainly did not associate themselves with humans. The pair stood for a moment and looked around. When their gazes fell on Jane they began to walk slowly toward her.
“Jane. Jane. C’mon slowly over ‘ere. Its not safe. Them beasts is dangerus.”
She ignored Hagrid’s frantic whispering and arm movements. Something told her to stay put and see what these magnificent beasts would do. As they got closer she looked down at the ground. As with the foals, the two unicorns stood in front of Jane, but instead of nuzzling her, they lowered themselves down onto their front fore legs and bowed to her. The stallion, on the right, kept her his long golden horn to the outside of her left leg as he gently put his lowered head against her leg. The mare did likewise on Jane’s right. It was a sight to behold for those watching. They were bowing to her, literally. Very gently and slowly, she lifted her arms and placed a hand on the head of each beast. Again, as with the foals, she was not aware of anything else but the unicorns.
She had always had a way with the animals on the farm. Even Tub, the mean and nasty bull Uncle Pete kept for stud, would calm when she was near.
Across the lawn, most of the schools inhabitants were stood watching. Mr Filch, the school caretaker had run inside and gone straight to the staff room at the approach of the unicorns, to warn the other professors, shouting that trouble was coming. The sight that met them was enough to make them stop and just stare. All of them had gone out with their wands at the ready, followed by a lot of the student body since classes had actually finished for the day. Now they were all hanging down at their sides. Even Professor Snape was mesmerised.
As Jane stood with her hands on the heads of the unicorns, once again a shimmer began to radiate from the two creatures knelt at her feet. This time the glow was golden. It got brighter and brighter and began to flow around all three of them. As it encompassed her it started to change colour and become white. Glowing steadily as it became so bright that no one could look directly at it. Then it started to fade. No fireworks, no bangs or pops or anything else that was expected from the crowd that were looking on. Then the unicorns simply stood and walked away. By the time anyone was able to look over to Jane she was laid in a heap on the ground, fast asleep, with a smile and a look of total contentment on her face.
Hagrid silently walked over and picked her up, tears streaming down his cheeks, as he carried her toward the castle.
No one said a word as they followed. The crowd that had been standing just outside of the school watching were just as quiet. They parted to let Hagrid through as he made his way to the hospital wing. He was not the only one who had been moved by what had happened. Quite a few of the female teachers had tears falling down their cheeks. Even Flitwick was dabbing his eyes. Snape gave them a disgusted look and followed Hagrid up the stairs along with Dumbledor and MacGonagall.
As soon as Hagrid had laid the sleeping girl gently on the bed, Poppy began to run her wand up and down over her sleeping form. “Well, she seems to be in good health. She is just in a deep but natural sleep. What happened out there headmaster?”
“Something so special that even I cannot explain Poppy.” We all witnessed it, but I confess that I am at a loss as to what it was that we saw. Any forthcoming suggestions are welcome.”
No one spoke. No one new what to say.
“Well, I think that it would be best if my patient was allowed to rest.”
“She is not your patient Poppy. She sleeps here, that is all. And I for one would like an explanation from the girl as to what the bloody hell happened out there. Wake her up.”
“As long as she is under my care Severus, I shall decide when and if she is to be woken. Right now I say that she should be allowed to sleep. Albus, tell him.”
“We would all like to know what happened out there Severus, but for now, I think that Poppy is right. Let her sleep and we can discuss this later.”
With that Albus headed off, followed by MacGonagall.
“Well, I s’pose I’d best be getting back too.” Hagrid left to go back to see to his foals.
Severus huffed as he glared at the med witch, turned on his heel and left.
Jane woke an hour later feeling more rested then she had for a long time. Just as she was sitting up Poppy came over with a pile of clean clothe and a glass of water.
“Oh. I am glad to see you’re awake. How are you feeling?”
“Fine thanks. What am I doing here? Where are the unicorns? I didn’t dream it did I?”
“Well, you are here because you fell asleep during Hagrid’s class and he carried you back here. The unicorns I assume have gone back to wherever they came from, and no, you did not dream it.”
Now, go have a wash and then you can put these clean clothes on. Your others got muddy when you decided to have your nap. These are such nice robes, it’s a pity they’ll change as soon as you put them on.” Poppy was chuckling as she spoke. “I have found you some muggle clothes for you. I am hoping that maybe they will stay as they are once you put them on.”
She headed of to the bathroom to get washed and clean her teeth. It was a luxury to be clean all the time now. After she had finished she went back to her bed to find a lovely two piece. The dress was pale turquoise, fitted and cut to reach just above the knees and it was sleeveless, with a sweetheart neckline. It had a short matching bolero style jacket with long sleeves, it had no fastenings on it as it was designed to stay open to show off the neckline of the dress. Jane didn’t want to put it on and watch as it changed into her usual baggy jeans and sweatshirt. Not this time. She remembered the boy out side. Putting on the clean knickers she reached out and picked up a bra. Never having owned on before, she was unsure ho to put it on. Poppy had come back through and noticed her struggling with it.
“Let me help you, I take it you have never worn one of these before.”
“No I haven’t. Thank you madam Pomfrey.”
“I believe friends call each other by their first names. When we are alone you can call me Poppy.”
“Thanks Madam Pom¾
Poppy.” She was grinning until she turned back to the dress. Then her face fell.
“What’s wrong? Don’t you like it? It doesn’t matter you know. As soon as you put them on you will have your favourite jeans and jumper back again.”
“I know. That’s the trouble. Its too nice to go and spoil like that. You know you could give me any old thing and it would still happen. It seems a shame to waste such nice clothes.”
“They are not wasted. As soon as you take them off they revert to their original state. Put it on anyway. I’m dying to see you in it. Even if it is only for a moment.”
They were both laughing as she pulled the dress over her head and Poppy zipped up the back. She put the little jacket on and Poppy grabbed her hand and ran with her to her private rooms, hoping to get there in time so that she could see herself in the mirror. Just as Poppy held her in front of it just as they started to change.
“NOOO!” She cried. The dress seemed to waver a bit and then stayed as it was when she had first donned it. She looked back at Poppy and back to the mirror again. It was still the suit. And it looked lovely on her. It flattered her already perfect figure. Poppy had picked up a brush from her dressing table and started to brush the girls long black hair. By the time she had done with it, it gleamed almost a blue/black. Next Poppy pulled the hair from just above her ears and swept it back, fastening it on the back of her head with a silver clip in the shape of a butterfly.
The nurse smiled into the mirror at her.
Jane smiled back. “I look almost pretty.”
“Pretty. Jane, you were already pretty. Now you look beautiful.” Come. It’s nearly time for dinner. Lets go give everyone a shock.”
Jane didn’t move. “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.” She was wondering if any of the males down there were like her Uncle Pete.
Why ever not?”
“Maybe its better if they don’t see me like this.”
The dress began to waver again and Poppy started to get a feeling that their was a bad reason why the girl was suddenly so nervous. “Nonsense. You look perfect and I am dying to see the expressions on the faces of the entire population of Hogwarts when we enter the hall tonight. She hugged the young girl. “You know, no harm will come to you while you are here.”
The dress stopped wavering again.
“Come on. Lets go knock some socks off.”
“Poppy.” The nurse looked at her. Taking in how pale her face had suddenly become. The way her shoulders slumped, and the fact that her eyes were downcast. “The headmaster told Professor Snape that we have to go back to Uncle Pete’s. I don’t want to go back . They’ll leave me there. They’ll make me stay. I’ll just run away again if they do.”
Poppy studied the girl.. She really wasn’t sure what to say. “I will talk to them Jane. I know that they would not force you to go if you have a good reason not to. And I believe that you do have a good reason, don’t you Jane.”
Jane did not look at her. She kept her eyes to the floor said nothing.
It had not been a question. Poppy thought that Falls Farm had not been good for her.
Right now though she wanted Jane to come down to dinner and make a grand entrance. She wanted them all to see what a truly lovely young lady she really was. Especially Severus. Then hopefully, they would all take the time to discover that she was as lovely on the inside. She had heard comments made by some pupils, mainly the purebloods, about Jane’s clothing. Not very nice ones either. Five minutes later, poppy came out of her office. “Well, come on then. We don’t want to be late do we.”
Jane sighed and hurried after her and down the staircase to the Main Hall for dinner.
Jane suddenly stopped.
“Come along dear. Why have you stopped?”
Jane looked down at her trainers. They were in a terrible state and the sole was coming off one of them. Plus they were two sizes too small and hurt her feet.
Poppy called for a house elf. When it appeared Jane jumped back in shock.
“You is wanting something Madam Healer.”
“Yes. A pair of shoes for this young lady if you wouldn’t mind. As you can see, her current ones are not suitable.”
The elf was gone in a wink.
“What was that?” She asked her.
“A house elf course.”
Before she could ask any further questions the elf had re-appeared and was holding a pair of smart black court shoes.
“Oh they’re perfect.” Poppy praised.
As Jane held her hand out for the shoes the little elf shook his head and knelt down at her feet, holding out a shoe with one hand and taking hold of her ankle with its other.
“I is honoured to be putting the missis feets in these shoes I is. Very honoured. Yous has very pretty feets miss, small too. Dainty like. Kali will make the to proper size when you has them on.” After the shoes were on, kali snapped her fingers and the shoes fit perfectly.
“Thank you very much, er… Kali was it?”
“Kali is honoured to serve Assimilater. Any time you is needing anything, you calls for Kali. I is being there in a flash I is.”
Before either of them had a chance to say anything further to the elf, she was gone.
Poppy said: “Its best to leave it for now. We can tell Albus later. Lets go to dinner.”
