Chapter 4 A Wand Of Bone
Sky looked stunned as the wall opened into an archway, which in turn opened onto a long cobbled street, twisting and turning further than she could see. Having known nowhere but her cell and the Professor’s rooms, Sky was fascinated and afraid at the same time. And there were so many people everywhere.
Severus pulled her through the arch and let go. As soon as he did, she turned to scuttle back into the yard but the arch was gone and she was met with a solid wall. With an exasperated sigh, the Potions Master grabbed her arm and pulled her along to a shop halfway down the cobbled street.
“This is Madam Malkin’s. Here you will be fitted for your robes.”
Pushing her through the door he followed her in. A short dumpy woman approached the Professor immediately.
“Good morning Sir. I take it you wish to have your daughter fitted with new robes.”
Severus frowned. “She is not my daughter Madam. She is nothing at all to me. And yes she is to be fitted with standard robes and any other item of clothing and footwear necessary for her stay at Hogwarts. Costs are to be charged to Hogwarts Benevolent funds so do not go overboard. I shall be back to collect her in one hour. Good day.”
He turned to Sky. “You shall stay here until I return.” Severus turned on his heel and was gone.
“Right dear. Let’s have a look at you.” When the woman spoke, Sky jumped.
“Nothing to be nervous of dear. Come with me.” Sky followed her into the back of the shop, eyes wide as she looked around the place.
“On here.” Madam Malkin told her, patting a low stool. The woman laughed when Sky sat on it.
“No dear I need you to stand on it.” Sky did as she was told and the woman told her to remove her outer robes. A new one was pulled over her head and the woman began to place pins around the hemline and sleeves.
After what seemed to be a long time Madam Malkin removed the robe and told her to step down and get dressed.
“What a pretty stone? What is it made from?” The woman asked Sky, indicating the stone around her neck.
“Don’t know. Won’t come off.” Sky told her.
Madam Malkin put her fingers on the stone. It was the colour of a Mediterranean sea. “It really is beautiful. And you say it won’t come off?”
“Won’t come off.” Sky told her again.
Madam Malkin thought the girl was a bit strange, beautiful, but strange. But she also felt a bit sorry for her. The way the Professor had spoke about her and to her made Madam Malkin think that the girl was definitely unwanted.
When Severus returned after an hour, Sky was standing looking at the wonderful array of dresses and robes that Madam Malkin had on display in her shop. She had never seen anything like them and could not help but compare her own shabby robes to these. Her eyes shone as she looked at them.
She ran her fingers down one of the robes while rubbing at her stone, something she did habitually without realising. The robe was turquoise and shimmered in the light that shone through the shop window.
Severus told Madam Malkin to have the items delivered to Hogwarts, took hold of Sky’s arm and dragged her away from the gowns at which she looked. “The likes of you has no need of frivolity. Come with me.”
Madam Malkin watched them leave. ‘Poor girl.’ She thought. Madam Malkin felt even more sorry for the shabbily dressed girl. The Potions Master seemed to be dragging her about as of she were a sack of potato’s, barking orders at her as he did. The girl didn’t object in the slightest. In fact, if she was any judge of character, the girl seemed terrified of him. “Come to think of it, the girl had seemed a bit afraid of her too. Another customer entered the shop and Madam Malkin forgot her musings and concentrated on her next sale.
“Your books are to be delivered tomorrow. We shall purchase your cauldron, scales, phials and telescope next.”
They entered a shop Severus told her was called an apothecary’s. After telling Sky to stand still and touch nothing, he told the man behind the counter what he wished to purchase. He also gave him a list of items he required for himself and as soon as the items were packaged and paid for, Severus reduced them and placed them in his pocket. Once more he dragged her out of the shop and into the cobbled street.
“I am in need of refreshment. We shall go to Fortesque’s before we purchase your wand.”
Sky was about to nod but before she had a chance he once more took her arm and dragged her along the street at a fast pace, stopping when they reached an area where several tables were set outside.
“Sit.” He barked and Sky took a seat at the table he indicated. She rubbed unconciously at her arm. It hurt where he kept grabbing it and squeezing. A young woman stepped over to their table with a small pad and quill. Not giving the girl a chance to ask what they would like, Severus ordered a coffee, sandwich and cauldron cake for himself, and a small pumpkin juice for Sky. He did not see why he should pay for her food. He was buying her a pumpkin juice, that was plenty. She could eat when they got back to Hogwarts.
After watching him eat for a while and earning herself a glare Sky sat and looked around her. People were sitting at tables chatting. Some had children with them and the children were making strange noises. Curious, she stared at them. Something about the strange noises made the corners of her mouth twitch upward. She raised her fingers to her mouth to feel them. It was a strange feeling and she didn’t know quite what to make of it. Their mouths were open as the strange sounds emitted from them, making her own mouth want to widen even more.
It was the first time Sky had ever heard laughter and she didn’t know what to make of it. Severus noticed her holding her hand to her mouth. “Take your hand from your mouth you silly girl. Anyone would think you had not heard laughter before.”
Sky’s slight smile fell at his words and her hand fell to her lap.
Severus narrowed his eyes and studied her. “You have not have you?”
She shook her head. “Laughter?” She enquired.
“Something one does involuntarily when one is amused.” He told her.
Sky had no idea what he meant and Severus could not be bothered to explain further.
He concentrated on his coffee and cake, watching her as her eyes strayed back to the laughing children. Studying her as once more her lips quirked at the corners and her fingers moved to cover her mouth.
Reaching across the table, he gently removed her hand from her mouth. For some reason, he could not fathom, he wanted to see her smile. Once again her face fell.
“Keep your hand away from your mouth.”
Patiently, he watched her until the corners of her mouth lifted again. He could see her hand twitching to lift before she placed her other hand over it. Slowly the corners of her lips lifted more and more, her lips parted slightly and she gave her first true smile, only a small one but her eyes shone as she did so. Severus was suddenly awestruck. As soon as he realised what he was doing, he scowled and slammed his cup down.
“Come.” He barked and Sky’s smile fell as she stood to follow Sir.
Her head turned to look back at the smiling children until they were out of sight as he once more pulled her along behind him. When he stopped, Sky looked at the small building in front of her. She struggled to read the words on the front. “Olli .. Vadner”
“Ollivander’s.” He corrected her. “This is where we shall purchase your wand.”
He opened the door and a bell chimed from somewhere inside the small shop. As Sky looked round she could see hundreds of small boxes stacked from floor to ceiling.
“Good morning.” Came a voice from the back as an old man with wide silvery eyes appeared. He nodded at Severus then his gaze turned to Sky.
She stood fingering her stone as usual as the strange man looked her up and down. He walked around her full circle, stopped in front of her and rubbed his chin.
“Hmm. Hold out your wand arm.” Mr. Ollivander told her.
She looked over to Severus and he stepped forward and lifted her right arm. Mr. Ollivander pulled a tape measure from around his neck and measured her arm. From there on in, the tape went to work on its own, moving about her and even measuring the length of her hair as Mr Olivander told her about the different woods used to make his wands and the various magical cores that were used inside of them.
Then the man ran his hands over the rows of narrow boxes, removing several and placing them on the counter. Sky stood and rubbed her stone with the fingers of her left hand as Mr. Ollivander removed a wand from its box and passed it to her.
“Rowan wood, dragon heart string 9 inches.”
Sky stopped rubbing the stone and took the wand. When told to do so, she waved the wand and nothing happened, nor did anything happen with the next couple of dozen wands that she tried.
Severus noticed that whenever she took hold of a new wand the stone at her neck darkened. Curious he moved closer to watch the stone. Each wand had the same effect on the stone.
“Mr. Ollivander, I am curious. The stone the girl wears reacts with each new wand you present her with. Perhaps it is having some effect on their ability to work.”
Mr. Ollivander stooped to look at the stone. Taking her by the shoulders he moved her to the edge of the counter where the torchlight was brighter. The stone lightened slightly.
“Strange.” He muttered. He moved her closer to the back of the counter and the stone took on a slight glow.
“How odd?” He said to the Potions Master. “But the wand chooses the wizard Professor. Not a stone.”
Meanwhile Sky was wandered through to the back of the shop. She didn’t know why she went there, only that the stone seemed to be pulling her.
“I am afraid you cannot go through there.” Mr. Ollivander told her.
Sky ignored him, the pull of the stone becoming stronger as she moved. Severus shot behind the counter.
“How dare you!” He barked at her. “Come back this instant.”
Still she continued her way through the narrow walkway, lined with more shelves full of boxes until she entered a small office. The office was filled with more shelves lined with more boxes. A cluttered desk dominated the room and a long workbench ran along one wall covered in pieces of wood and various items and tools for wand making.
The two men followed her, Mr. Ollivander complaining and Severus growing angrier by the second that she had dared to disobey him. Sky stopped and stood near the desk. The stoned shone brightly now, emitting a light that travelled along the walls of the cramped room.
Severus grabbed her arm, intending to pull her through to the main part of the shop and shout at her but he could not make her move. It was as though she were stuck to the floor. Both men were silent as the light from Sky’s stone narrowed to a fine beam that pointed to one particular section of wall. That part of the wall faded to reveal a small door.
“That is my safe. How dare you!” the old man spluttered.
Sky heard nothing as the door to the safe flew open. Instead, she held out her hand in front of her, palm up and something shot out of the safe and hovered mid point between the safe and Sky.
The beam widened to enclose the box that floated in front of them and the box opened to reveal an ivory coloured wand within. The wand lifted out of the box and landed in Sky’s hand. Turning the wand in her hand she placed its tip against the stone at her neck causing a blazing flash of red light before disappearing into the stone and/or the wand. No one was quite sure which. Sky turned to the two men, holding the wand and looking at it.
“It would appear the wand has chosen, Mr. Ollivander.” Severus intoned.
“That wand is not for sale Professor. It is extremely old and priceless. A very special, very powerful wand. It is not for use by a student.”
Sky waved the wand and the desk turned itself completely over, landing right way up. Mr Ollivander was furious and told her to put the wand on his desk immediately. She did and stepped back but the wand flew straight back into her hand. Her face took on a look of fear at the angry looks of Sir and the silver eyed man.
“What is so special about this wand Mr. Ollivander? It would certainly seem that it intends to stay with the girl.”
“That wand Professor is over three thousand years old. It has been in possession of my family for many generations and is said to be made from the leg bone of the first of our kind. Wizard kind. Its core contains a drop of blood from every known witch or wizard of note, even Merlin himself, that has existed over the centuries and is sealed at the tip with the most unusual … stone.” Mr Ollivander looked again at the stone around the girls neck. It is not for sale.”
“Then what do you suggest Mr. Ollivander? Clearly the wand will not let her leave without it and Hogwarts does not have the funds to pay out vast sums for a student wand.”
Mr. Ollivander’s eyes flashed and he made to take the wand from Sky. She didn’t resist but when Mr Ollivander made to take the wand from her his hand was badly burned. The smell of burning flesh permeated the air around them.
Sky put the wand back on the desk and backed herself into a corner, sinking to the floor, holding her knees and trembling. She knew she would be in trouble for this.
Mr Olivander looked at the girl huddled on the floor. “Why is she doing that?” He whispered to the Professor.
“It is a long story and not one I wish to enter into at this particular moment.” “Get up girl.” He barked at Sky.
Sky stood, the wand once more in her trembling hand. She made to place it once more on the desk but Mr. Ollivander stopped her.
“There is a reason this wand has decided you are to be in possession of it. What that reason is I do not know, but it has something to do with the stone you wear. The stone in that wand has always been black. Now that it has connected with your stone, it has changed. What I also know is that it has chosen you, regardless of my wishes. It is yours.”
“Do not be ridiculous.” Severus snorted. Hogwarts could not possibly afford …”
“No one could afford to purchase this wand Professor. Not even Gringotts. However the wand clearly belongs to her, so she must take it regardless. However, it must not be made common knowledge as to the roots of this wand. It is something I cannot stress enough.” Mr. Ollivander turned to Sky.
“Take care of it girl. It is a precious thing you hold in your hand. Good day to you.”
Sky looked at him amazed then turned to Severus. She had not received a beating and the man had told her she could keep the wand. For the first time she knew of, Sky smiled. A true genuine smile over which she had no control as both wand and stone glowed with a soft luminescent light before fading.
The men stared at her as she smiled, both mesmerised with her. The box drifted towards her and nudged at her arm, causing her to look at it. As soon as she took hold of the box to place the wand inside, the glow faded completely and her smile slipped. Severus and Mr. Ollivander regained their senses.
“Thank you Sir. Mr. Ollivander.” She clutched the box to her as if it were the most precious thing in the world.
After saying goodbye, Severus led her from the shop, back through the archway and into the Leaky Cauldron. From there, he apperated them back to Hogwarts. Without a word, he led them through the gates and strode back up to the castle, the events in Mr. Ollivander’s spinning through his mind.
Sky once more struggled to keep up with him, the box held tightly to her chest. As soon as they were in the dungeons, Severus closed the door and turned to look at Sky.
She stopped dead and looked at him. “I … I’m sorry Sir.”
“Sorry? For what? I am merely curious as to what exactly happened back there. Can you tell me?”
Sky shook her head. “And that means what? You cannot, or you will not? I do not respond well to head waving.”
“Don’t know Sir. Don’t know.” She told him fearfully. She truly didn’t know what had happened. She knew something had but she couldn’t explain it to herself, never mind to the Sir. “I did bad?”
He sighed. “No. You did not do bad.” He knew she had not the foggiest what just happened. It would appear that the stone had something, if not all to do with it.
“You not beat me?”
“For goodness sake no. I will not beat you. I have never beaten you. I do not beat children.”
He marched over to his desk and removed the purchased items he had brought back with him along with the list. He checked off each purchase he made against the list and put them to one side.
“Go to your room and put your cloak away, then come back here and we shall take a look at this wand of yours.”
Sky left the room and Severus went to his drinks cabinet, poured himself a good measure of firewiskey and downed it, topping his glass up before sitting in his favourite armchair by the fire. He did not normally drink during the day, but this had been one hell of a morning.
Sky returned still clutching the box.
“Well sit down and take it out girl. You cannot do much with it if you keep the dammed thing in its box.”
She sat on the chair opposite, put the box on the table and opened it. Her eyes flicked to his briefly and she removed the wand. Severus noted that the stone at her neck was now the same colour as her eyes. The tip of the wand held the same colour.
Severus held out his hand. “I would like to look at it.”
Sky passed him the wand. He suddenly remembered what had happened to Mr. Ollivander when he had snatched the wand from her, but he touched on it carefully and nothing happened. He decided it was because he was not trying to take it away from her.
The wand was warm and smooth, the handle finely carved with an array of symbols he had never seen before now. Severus could not feel anything from the wand. Normally when one held another’s wand, there would be a faint tingle of magic. From this one he felt nothing and passed it back to her.
“Repeat after me.” He told her. “Wingardium Leviosa.”
Sky repeated the words several times until he was satisfied. Then he demonstrated the swish and flick motion necessary to perform the levitation spell. Though judging by what had happened to Ollivander’s desk he was not sure that it even was necessary. She performed the swish and flick perfectly first time and he placed a quill on the table.
“Now try it on that.”
As soon as she aimed the wand, the quill lifted into the air. Severus’ eyebrows shot up. Did you think the incantation?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t get chance.”
“Let’s try something else.” He looked round the room and his eyes fell back to the table. “Your wand box.”
Once again, she barely had a chance to aim the wand and the box lifted to join the quill that was still hovering between them. The Potions Master tapped his fingers against his lips. “Come with me.”
Sky followed him outside, across the grounds and to the lake. After walking halfway round it, he stopped. There were several fallen trees in front of them along with a few large boulders. “See what you can do with those.” He told her pointing at the tree trunks.
Sky pointed her wand and before she could speak or swish the wand, a midnight blue flash radiated from its tip to encompass the fallen trees and all seven of them lifted high into the air.
“Put them down.” He told her annoyed, even he could not perform such a powerful spell. He could perhaps lift a couple of the trees with effort, but not all seven. Hell, even Dumbledore could not do it.
He turned and stalked back to the castle. His mood growing darker with every step. He was annoyed that this stupid ignorant girl could now do magic more powerful then his own. ‘She was a nothing.’ He thought angrily. ‘Barely toilet trained and afraid of her own shadow. What God deigned to give her so much power? It was not as if she had done anything to deserve it. Where as he, Severus Snape had been working for years to try and defeat Voldemort. And at great personal risk to himself.‘ On entering his rooms, he threw himself into his chair, picked up his glass and swallowed down the rest of his firewiskey. When Sky ran in a few minutes later, he turned on her.
“What kept you, you stupid girl. In future, you will keep up with me or you shall be forced to spend the rest of the day in the corridor. Now put that wand away and go to your room.”
She was confused now. He was really mad and she didn’t know why. But Sky did as she was told and scuttled off to her room as quickly as she could. As soon as she closed her door, she removed her shoes, put the box on the table and sat on the bed wondering what she had done. In future, she would try harder to keep up with him but he had been angry before he returned.
Severus Snape would never admit that he was jealous. Not for all the galleons in Gringotts. But he would admit that he considered it unfair that she should have so much more power with that wand then anyone he had ever knew. He consoled himself by drinking himself into a stupor and falling asleep in the chair until the following day.
When he did awakened, he felt terrible. His head was ready to explode, his mouth tasted like old socks. He knew it served him right. He had not eaten since breakfast yesterday. But when that stupid chit of a girl had …the girl. Was she still in her room?
“Bugger her.” He muttered. Heading to the bathroom, he relieved himself, stripped and took a long shower. Once dried and dressed, he retrieved a hangover potion, downed it and ordered breakfast. Then he decided to bring Sky from her room.
She was sitting on the bed, washed, dressed and waiting to see if she would be allowed to come out. Severus merely crooked a finger at her and she followed. Breakfast was set out when they walked into his office, a full English for him and oatmeal for her. Both ate hungrily. Sky too had not eaten since breakfast yesterday.
“The Headmaster and most of the staff will be returning tomorrow. Today I shall show you round the school. This will be your last night with me fortunately, and then I can be rid of you at last.”
Sky concentrated on her plate. Even though she knew he disliked her, she was still hurt that he was so eager to be rid of her. “Yes Sir.” She answered quietly. Not knowing what else to say.
As soon as breakfast was over he grabbed her arm and they headed to Slytherin common room. Severus was head of Slytherin house and was proud of the fact. So of course this was the place he intended to show her first.
“All being well you will not be sorted into Slytherin. If the sorting hat so much as suggests it, you shall of course refuse.”
He then went on to explain about the sorting and the four houses. He showed her around the accommodations for the different houses.
“Slytherin, my own house, is of no relevance to you as you shall not be among those chosen to join. Ravenclaw for those who are of reasonable intelligence. Hufflepuff, you would probably be more suited there, and Gryffindor. For the brave and stupid.” he told her. Each house is considered family to those who are members.
“Family? What is family?”
“Family are those who care for us. The ones we turn to in times of trouble. Share our good, and bad times with.”
Sky liked the sound of that. She wanted family and the thought of having family herself made her smile. “I want family.” She told him softly. “Family is nice.”
Severus looked down his nose at her and raised an eyebrow. “Stupid girl.” Her smile fell.
He showed her round a good deal of the castle before lunch. Not through any sense of guilt after yesterday. It was just so she would know her way around and that meant less chance of her crossing his path later on. After lunch, he showed her round the grounds, quiddich pitch and the greenhouses. Sky liked the flowers and reached to touch one.
“I would not touch that if I were you. It may look innocent, but it will remove your fingers before you can blink.”
She snatched her hand back quickly and Severus smirked.
“As From tomorrow, you shall be expected to keep your wand about your person at all times. When your robes arrive today, you will find a small pocket inside for that purpose. This evening you will pack your belongings ready for removal tomorrow. I do NOT intend to have you in my quarters a moment longer than is necessary.”
He was looking forward to tomorrow. He intended to make sure each and every member of the staff knew just how inconvenienced he had been. Albus especially. He would prepare pensives this evening for the Headmaster. There were certain parts that he would obviously have to leave out. It would not do to let the old man see him strike the girl, nor could he allow him to see some of the more embarrassing moments. But Albus Dumbledore would certainly feel the Potion Master’s wrath.
As soon as she finished her dinner, Severus gave her a box, told her to pack her things and go to bed. Finally he could relax. He would send her to wait in the main entrance first thing tomorrow and not have to bother about her any longer.
Unfortunately, he did not get to relax that evening. Just as he settled into his chair after preparing the pensives, his left arm began to burn.
It was the Dark Mark. He went to his bedroom to retrieve his mask and cape before heading out of the dungeons and down to the main gates to apparate to the Dark Lords side.
