CH 4 Veritaserum
Severus, having finished his breakfast, stood up.
Lou reached for him to help her up but he didn’t notice and turned away.
“Wait.” She called, grasping his arm. “Where are you going?”
Turning to look at her, he removed his arm from her grip. “Not that it is any of your concern, but I am meeting the Headmaster. I have items I need from Spinners End.” He turned back to the door.
“But what about me? I have to come too, I need …”
“You are to stay here, your things will be brought for you.”
Lou watched gobsmacked as he walked out the door and left her sitting there. She grabbed the table and her walking stick and struggled to her feet, no way was he leaving her behind.
Molly noticed her and moved round the table. “Sit down dear.” She told Lou. “They shouldn’t take too long and you really need to rest that leg of yours.”
“No, I want to go too. I need to get my own things, my private things. He can’t see my private things. Let me go.” She yelled at Molly who was trying to get her to sit down.
Lou jumped when the door opened and a rather tall old man with long white hair and beard, dressed in the weirdest clothes she’d ever seen, walked onto the room. To Lou, he looked to be wearing a long blue dress with stars on it.
“Ah, you must be Lou. You look much better than last time I saw you.”
“What?” She asked, confused. “I’ve never seen you before, who are you?”
“My name is Albus Dumbledore. We have not been formally introduced no, but I was with you when you arrived last night. Have you settled in?”
“No I’m not. They wont let me go and I’ve got shackles on my ankles and I don’t like them and I want to go home. I need my things too. Can you take them off?” She pointed at her ankles.
“I am afraid they must stay for the time being. It is for your own protection, has Severus not explained that to you?”
“Yeah ,but I don’t need them. You have no right to do this to me.”
At that moment Severus re-entered the room along with Moody and Lupin.
Lou hobbled her way over to the Potions Master. “I’ve had enough of this. You take these damned things off me now and take me back. I don’t care what any of you are or what you say, I want to leave.”
Severus looked down at her.
Lou’s eyes were level with his chest and she had to look up to see his face.
“I have told you already that you cannot. Now write down what you would like me to bring and I shall see what I can arrange.” He removed a parchment and quill from his pocket, then sidestepped her to place them on the table.
Lou turned and frowned at him. “I can’t write with a blasted feather you great twit. Anyway, I need to get my things myself, private things. You wont be able to find them. I have to see Mr Key too, he’ll be expecting me for work tomorrow so I need to …”
“Will you shut up for one minute.” Severus growled at her.
Lou was livid. “Don’t you dare tell me to shut up. I want to leave, I’m fed up of telling you.”
“Then stop telling me.” He hissed. “I shall speak to this Mr Key for you if you write down his address, meanwhile sit down and list the items you require and tell me where your more personal items are. I shall see to it that they are retrieved for you, but you are not leaving these premises.”
Lou looked at him shocked. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t. She let out a frustrated groan and stamped her foot. Then she wished she hadn’t because it caused pain to shoot up her bad leg. “Fucking hell.” She stormed.
“ENOUGH.” The Potions Master bellowed. “You will mind your language while you are under this roof. Now sit down and do as you are told.”
“Molly, would you be kind enough to write down what she requires since she is unfamiliar with using a quill.”
He turned to Lou. “You, tell Mrs Weasley what you want and where it is. Other then that I do not wish to hear another sound leave your mouth. Is that understood?”
He dragged her chair out and bounced her into it.
When she heard someone snigger her head whipped round to see a sandy haired man looking at her. “I dunno what your laughing at.” She muttered. “It’s not funny. I suppose your as weird as the rest of them here.”
“Possibly more than you realise.” he told her, still smiling. “Honestly though, no one here means you any harm so why don’t you relax. I know this is all strange to you, but you really are quite safe here.”
“I don’t want to relax, I want to leave. Can you take these things off my ankles?”
“She really is quite a handful Severus.” Albus’ face was lit with merriment as he looked at Lou.
Severus rolled his eyes. “I give up.” He grumbled, walking from the kitchen.
Lou sat with her head in her hands sulking.
Molly sat beside her and picked up the quill. “Come on, cheer up. You tell me what you want them to bring, and I’ll write it down for you. We really are nice people you know, just give us a chance, like we’re giving you.”
Lou looked at the woman beside her. She seemed genuinely nice to Lou and her eyes were gentle. All of a sudden it was too much for Lou, she turned away and started to cry.
Molly reached out and pulled her back, wrapping her arms around the young girl and holding her.
Lou stiffened at the contact and tried to pull away, but Molly kept hold and stroked her hair.
Lou gave in, letting her head fall against the woman’s bosom and allowed herself to be comforted.
At a look from Molly the three men still in the kitchen rose and walked out. Molly let her cry herself dry and wiped her face with a hanky. “There, I bet you feel much better for that, I know I always do when I’ve had a good cry.”
“Yo …you cry?” Lou asked, pulling away slightly.
“Of course I do. Everyone does at some time, there’s no shame in it. I know your frightened with everything that’s going on at the moment, I would probably feel the same in your shoes. The thing is, you’re here and you have to stay, it doesn’t mean you have to be unhappy. Do you have any family we can contact?”
Lou shook her head. “No, just me.”
“That’s a shame. Look, why don’t we make this list and give it to the Professor, then you and I can have a long chat and a cup of tea together. I’ll tell you some things about us and you can tell me about yourself. My husband Arthur is really excited about meeting you. He loves everything muggle. You can tell him about batteries, he collects them you know.”
Lou gave her an incredulous look. “He collects batteries? Why?”
“I have no idea. You’ll need to ask him that one. Come on, tell me what you need.”
Lou told Mrs Weasley what she wanted from the house, which turned out to be everything. Then she explained where her private things were hidden and that Mr perv wasn’t to look at them or even touch them.
“Mr who?” Molly asked.
“Tall dark and pervy, the one who put these blasted things on my legs.”
“Oh don’t let him hear you call him that dear, it’s really not nice. You must address him as Professor or Professor Snape. Besides, Severus is a good man, he’s the one who saw to your leg and brought you here.”
“If he’s that nice he wouldn’t have thrown me out of my home when I had nowhere else to go. He didn’t even let me get all my things, just chucked me out and locked the doors. He had no right to do that, just like he’s got no right to keep me here and put these things on my ankles. Why won’t someone take them off? I hate them.”
“I’m sure he’ll remove them once he feels he can trust you. They are for your own safety you know.”
“They make me feel like a criminal and I’m not one. I don’t steal and I don’t lie, I work for what I get. Anyway, I don‘t trust him.”
“I believe you, no one here thinks you are a criminal. So how about it, are you going to let us help you?”
“I haven’t got much choice have I?” Lou said begrudgingly. Then as an afterthought she looked at the woman. “I’m sorry I called you all weird. Your not, well not you anyway, I’m not sure about the rest.”
Molly chuckled. “Thank you. None of us are beyond normal you know, at least not to us.”
“Well what about that old bloke in the dress? You can’t tell me that’s normal. Then there’s that bloke with the spinney eye, he’s just …I dunno.”
Albus, who had returned to collect Lou’s list, started to laugh. “Do I really look to you like I am wearing a dress. Oh dear. It is quite normal for wizards to wear this kind of attire, though we do not call them dresses, they are robes.”
“Robes? Men don’t wear robes where I live, not unless they’re going to a fancy dress party. Sorry, I’ve been a right pain I know.”
“You have every reason to be. Apology accepted. Now, do you have your list?”
“Yeah, but my private things, I don’t want anyone to look at them, especially not him through there.”
“If they are private Lou, they will remain so. You have my word on that.” Albus took the list and with a wink at Lou, he left.
Lupin poked his head round the door. “Is it safe to come back in yet? I’m starving and the others have left.”
Molly smiled and nodded as she stood to get his breakfast.
Lou watched him openly, as he ate. “Are you one too?”
“One what?” Remus asked through a mouthful of toast.
“A wizard, like the others? You don’t dress fancy like they do, you dress more like me, are you homeless too?”
Remus almost choked on his food and Molly reddened and cleared her throat.
“Lou, that is really not polite. Mr Lupin is most definitely not homeless and …”
“It’s alright Molly.” Remus told her before turning back to Lou. “You are a very astute young lady I’ll give you that. I am not homeless no, but I have found it difficult to find regular work, so I take what comes along and I get by. What about you?”
“About the same. I’ve got a job, well I had one until this happened.” She pointed at her leg. “I had somewhere to live too. The house wasn’t mine, I just squatted there, but no one else seemed to hang around, so I thought it was pretty safe.” Lou studied her hands. “It’s all gone now though.” She added in a quieter voice.
“How old are you Lou?”
“Fifteen, but I can look after myself, I don’t need anyone else.”
“I am sure you can.” Remus agreed. “What is you full name? Lou is short for something else I take it? Louise? Louisa?”
“Yuk no.” She told him screwing her nose up. “That’s sissy, it’s Louhi. L.O.U.H.I. It‘s pronounced Low-hee.”
“That’s an unusual name.” Molly put in. “What does it mean? It‘s not English is it?”
“No, it’s Finnish.”
“Really? So are your parents Finnish?”
“My mother was, or is, I dunno what my dad was, is. I’m not telling you anything else, you’ll only try to find them and send me back. Well you can’t cos there not able to be found. I don’t know where they are.” Lou felt like she’d told them too much and didn’t want to talk about herself any more.
“Not if you really don’t want us to.” Remus told her. “I take it you haven’t seen them for a while?”
“I’ve never seen them, so I can’t remember them. I’ve always lived in ca … Look, I don’t want to talk about me any more.” Lou was getting upset and tried to get up from the table again.
“Shh. Shh.” Molly was round the table in a flash. “We won’t ask you any more questions, not if it upsets you. How about you ask us questions, you can have a piece of cake while we answer.”
Lou nodded, slightly mollified for the moment. “Where are we?”
“London.” Remus told her.
“Where in London, what is this place?”
“Ah, now that’s a difficult one. I can’t actually tell you the address.”
Why not? You must know where we are or you wouldn’t be here. You said I could ask questions.”
Remus and Molly where stumped as to how to answer her. “I think Albus would be the best one to answer that question. How about I show you around a bit, downstairs at least, I don’t think you should be climbing stairs with that leg.”
“Ok, but can I still have that piece of cake first please?”
Ten minutes later Remus helped her to stand, led her slowly out of the kitchen and carried her up the steps into the hallway.
“It’s gloomy in here, aren’t there any lights or windows?” She asked as she made her way to a set of curtains and pulled them back before Remus realised what she was doing.
Lou fell on her backside when a woman started screaming at her. She was shouting and swearing and saying all kinds of weird stuff that Lou didn’t understand.
Mrs Weasley came running through from the kitchen to meet up with Remus.
But the woman was driving Lou nuts and she’d given her one hell of a scare, and caused her to hurt her leg.
Picking up her walking stick she poked the woman in front of her. “SHUT UP YOU NASTY BITCH.” Lou shouted, not even realising she was talking to a portrait.
Mrs Black’s image stared open mouthed at the girl who just prodded her. “How dare you poke me. Who are you that dare to enter the noble house of Black and attack me in such a manner?”
“Me? You shouted at me first you old bat, and you made me fall. What the hell did you think you were trying to do? And what you sitting in the window for?”
Just then Remus and Molly reached her. As Molly helped Lou to her feet, Remus began the arduous job of trying to shut up the infamous Mrs Black. How were they going to explain this to the girl?
But Lou was not giving in yet. As soon as she was on her feet she hobbled closer to the curtains and pulled them back again just as Remus almost had them closed.
“Lou don’t please, you don’t know what you doing.” Remus told her desperately.
“Yes I do, she called me all kinds of names and she doesn’t even know me. Who is she? She can’t talk to me like that.”
Lou turned to Mrs Black. “What’s wrong with you? You can’t just turn on people like that, it’s not normal. They said I’m rude, but I don’t shout and swear at someone for no reason. Do you live here, because I hope I don’t have to stay much longer if you do.”
Mrs Black, for the first time anyone knew of, stared open mouthed and silent at the girl. Her jaw worked up and down a few times as Molly and Remus looked on nervously.
“This is my house, and you are trespassing, they are all trespassing.” Mrs Black told Lou in a slightly calmer voice. “Now who might you be? I have given you my name, might I at least expect the same courtesy.”
“I’m Lou.” At a raised eyebrow from Lupin she added; “Louhi.”
“The portrait narrowed her eyes. “Louhi. Louhi what?”
“I’m not saying, just Louhi, but I rather be called Lou. Why did you say all those nasty things?”
“Because they are true, why else would I say them?”
Remus and Molly could not believe there ears, Lou and Mrs Black were having a conversation. It wasn’t the most pleasant of conversations, but it was one none the less.
“What is wrong with your leg?”
“Some pratt with a stick …wand sliced it open.”
“I sincerely hope you hexed them back.”
“No, I haven’t got a wand, but I clobbered two and hurt em real bad. I hurt another one too but next thing I knew I was here and they wont let me go.”
Lou went on to tell the portrait all about her troubles since she arrived. Mrs Black sat in her portrait, seemingly sympathising with Lou and listening intently.
At a loss as to what to do, Molly returned to the kitchen and Remus provided Lou with a chair and moved into the drawing room, to sit and think. He left the door open so he could hear Lou and Mrs Black talking.
When Albus, Severus and Moody returned a little over an hour later the sight that met their eyes practically knocked them all for six.
Mrs Black totally ignored them all as they strode passed, preferring instead to listen to Lou’s complaints about the wizards she’d so far met. The woman seemed appalled that Lou was grounded with the ankle cuffs and told her so. “And after you saved his life. I find it abhorrent they should do such a thing. Were I able, I would remove them myself.”
“Then it is fortunate that you are not able.” Spoke a deep voice behind Lou. Before anymore could be said, Severus drew the curtains across the portrait and turned to Lou with a scowl.
“What did you think you were doing?” He hissed at her. “How dare you engage that portrait in conversation.”
“What? What portrait?” Lou was confused, she thought she had been talking to a real person. “She’s not too bad if you talk to her a bit, and at least she listened to me. Anyway, what you did was rude.”
Severus grabbed her arm and led her into the drawing room. Ushering her over to the sofa, he told her to sit down.
Lou was taken aback at all the frowning faces looking in her direction. She had no inkling as to what was going on and felt nervous now.
Severus passed her a small bottle. “Drink.” he ordered.
“What? Why, what is it?”
“For your leg.”
Lou drank it down and her leg did start to hurt a little less.
Passing him the empty bottle, she realised they were all still watching her and she felt uncomfortable.
When Mr perv and the old man sat down opposite her she started to squirm.
“I only talked to her. Well I moaned a bit too but that’s all, honest.”
Severus nodded at the Headmaster. “She is ready.”
“Go ahead Severus, you are more proficient at this then I.”
The Potions Master leaned forward and rested his elbows on his parted knees, his hands clasped as he looked at Lou. The healing potion he gave her, also contained three drops of veritaserum, a powerful truth potion.
“What is you name?”
Lou looked at him puzzled. The others in the room moved closer and Lou sank back into the sofa. “You know my name, why are you all looking at me like that?”
“What is your full name?”
Lou struggled, she didn’t want to tell them that. They said they wouldn’t ask her if she didn’t want to tell them. “L ..Louhi. I don’t want to talk any more.”
“Louhi, what is your surname?”
Lou started to feel really odd. She didn’t want to answer his question but something in her head was trying to make her. She clamped her lips together and held her breath, determined not to answer any more questions.
