Chapter 4
Etta sat alone in her room as the servants around her were quick to pack her belongings. Draco had gone to send a messenger ahead of them, to let his parents know he would be returning soon and that he would not be alone.
She was lost in her own thoughts. She trusted her uncle more so than any other man. He was more her father than anyone had ever been. And yet he had betrayed her. She knew there might be another possibility, that maybe she did not understand his mindset that he was only trying to protect her. But this type of scandal would only have people scrutinize her even more, it seemed her own family had finally had enough of her and were throwing her to the wolves.
The only good that existed for her at this point was that Draco seemed to respect her enough to try and "save" her, if only he knew that by agreeing to this sham of a marriage he was causing more damage to the both of them than anyone could imagine.
Draco entered her room as Etta began her contemplation about her lack of purity; as her thoughts swayed towards fate finally taking revenge. His interruption reminded her of the freedoms he now held as her husband.
"Harrietta?"
"Etta. I prefer it." Although now she wish she'd never mentioned it, he needed that liberty. He needed to know the rules.
"I know everything is happening suddenly, but our carriage is ready."
"I'm not yet packed." Etta seemed to be speaking to the walls of her bedroom more than anything.
"Yes, I see. However, we need only one or two cases today. The rest can be sent over as soon as they are ready, the extra carriages will be here soon. Everything will be ready and home within a week's time." They were going through the motions. They knew it.
"I need to say goodbye to Brian."
"I'll be waiting by the carriages, do not take too long." Once Draco had left the room Etta did something she had not done in years; she made her way to Brian's quarters.
Before she could even raise her hand to the door she heard his voice, "Enter." She sheepishly made her way through the door only to lean against it before it was even completely closed.
"It's me, Brian." She noticed him at his desk. His dark hair masking his face and his tan hands scrawling across parchment.
"I knew it would be, I'm writing a letter to her."
"Oh. I knew you'd be gone soon."
"I'm leaving, now." Etta confirmed.
Brian stood from his desk to walk to her. He was smiling when he noticed that she was not. "I thought this is what you have always dreamed of."
"I dreamed of love Brain! I dreamed of a wedding! And children, and sacrifice! I knew it was only a dream but- I could never stop fantasizing. Why would Father do this, Brian?" Etta was going into hysterics again.
"If I see a single tear, you're out. I am not your fiance. I don't need to deal with it anymore."
Etta glared at Brian. "And here I thought we could have an amicable separation."
"Don't give me that look. The Etta I know made things work. The Etta I know made her dreams come true. Suddenly, you're one step closer to your goal and everything becomes so dire."
"I don't have a fiance." Etta gritted out. "I have a husband."
This shocked Brian. "What?"
"I said, 'I have a husband.' I wasn't given the dignity of a courting, or a wedding. I was sold off to the first person who - "
"Etta! You're angry. I'd rather you not say things you may regret, later. That man seemed trustworthy and gentile. If he truly is your husband, it'd be best if you didn't have such a negative attitude about him from the start." He said this, but he was still trying to wrap his mind around this concept.
"I should've just been content living here. Here I know I'm safe."
"Etta? You wouldn't be yourself without dreams. Would you like me to be your liaison during the transition?"
"Of course I do, Brian! However, we both know that it would cost us more trouble than it is worth. Besides, there is no transition. He's signed the contracts."
"As is?" Brian wasn't aware of the latest version of the marriage contract, but he'd seen enough drafts to know how ridiculous the demands were.
"I - I suppose so. Brian. I-"
"No. I'll visit you in two weeks time unless you explicitly ask me to do otherwise." He saw the sorrow in Etta's eyes. "I know I promised you that I would save you if I thought you were in danger, but - Etta. I don't believe you are, and ... I may love her. I can't promise you these things any longer."
Etta moved towards him even as he took a step back. She wasn't going to cry she told herself. She stepped closer to him and simply put her arms around his waist. She felt his arms engulf her and his head rest on hers .
"Two weeks, Etta. That I can promise."
Etta extricated herself from his arms and quickly dashed out of the room. She didn't want a last look of him. She'd seen him enough. She'd toyed with his emotions enough. Her life may be in shambles, but she was still going to try her hardest to pretend it was just the way she'd wished it.
*****
Draco stood by a large and opulent carriage. Two white horses were strapped to the front, connected together by leather cords and golden buckles. The driver sat in the front. Draco had wanted to keep this simple, really he had. But with the need of so many carriages, he found it was difficult to use only the modest ones.
He had expected Etta to appear quite a while ago. Her farewell to Brian was taking quite a while. As time passed he was at first envious of Brian. Someone Etta obviously cared for even when it was greatly inappropriate. Draco knew he should not have let her go see a man on her own, especially one she was so intimate with but he hadn't realized that until later.
He was no longer as jealous. She was leaving the only home she'd ever known, and he was unlikely to bestow upon her the love and admiration she deserved. He'd try, but he had little faith in himself. She should at least have this moment, he thought. Even if that moment is with Brian.
Finally, he saw her appear on the steps. She looked radiant in her white and sky blue dress. Draco noticed her hair was pinned high on her head and that she wore a discrete headdress and that her dress was quite long in the back nearly imitating a train. She looked like the bride she'd never had the chance to be.
"Etta." He spoke as she approached.
She simply held out her hand. He held firmly to it as she climbed into the carriage and he followed her, hoping with all his heart that he was able to give her any sort of happiness.
