Chapter 4
“Miss Vance, are you sure you will not change your mind about your sleeping arrangements? I for one would not appreciate the distress it would cause the students, were pieces of you to be found scattered about the grounds come morning.”
“Trust me Severus, you would have one very crazy lady on your hands were I to attempt to confine myself to an enclosed room for the night. I will be perfectly safe, whether it be from magical or none magical threat, I can take care of myself. I have done so for longer than you would imagine.”
He stood and re-transfigured the chair back into a pebble. “If you insist Miss Vance, but do not say I did not warn you. Thank you for the food, it was most enjoyable. As was the cognac. Perhaps I might return the favour sometime.” With a quick bow, he turned and headed back for the castle. Just before he closed the main doors he looked across the clearing and was astonished to see her dancing, her skirts twirling as she spun to the strains of the flageolet. ’Strange woman.’ He thought. ’Though she does make a delicious stew.’ He headed to his dungeon rooms, wondering what kind of meat she had used. It was definitely gamey, though he could not place it.
Paula danced happily into the night as she wondered about Severus, her first impression of him was right, he was a rigid disciplinarian who believed himself to be always in the right, though deep down he was troubled. A sad and guilty past held him hostage along with the dark life he was forced to lead against his will. Still, there was hope for him; he was one of the reasons the headmaster brought her here. Along with others, one a young boy who was present when she arrived, though they had not yet been introduced. Tired, she stopped the flageolet, dampened down the fire and climbed into the Tsera. Once the flaps were securely tied shut, she settled down onto the blankets and fell into a blissful sleep.
“Kak, you have my class timetable I presume.”
“I do indeed Paula, though I leave it to your discretion as to what and how you will teach the students. You know the threat, as well as the ones most at risk. Now, I know you are somewhat averse to eating indoors, in fact to being indoors at all. That makes what you are doing even more altruistic, I would however appreciate it if you would honour us with your presence at breakfast so that I may introduce you to the students.”
“I would love to kak, thank you. I have eaten, though it was at sun-up and I am sure I can manage to find room for more.”
Severus was surprised when he entered the Great Hall to find Paula in the seat next to his. He had expected her either to be dead, in the hospital wing, or to take flight during the night. He sat down and gave his customary glare to the students before setting about his meal.
Paula watched him, amused with the way he sauntered into the hall, robes billowing and then glaring at everyone when he sat down.
“Still here and in one piece Severus.” She quipped.
“I had noticed.” He replied, not bothering to look at her.
“Ooh, not a morning person then.”
“Not particularly no. You on the other hand are, I assume, one of those sickeningly cheerful morning people that insists on making everyone else miserable with incessant, jolly banter. If that is the case, then please do not include me amongst your list of those you feel the need to ebullient.”
“Ho ho. We are in a good mood. Actually, you have said more than anyone at this table so far, I think that makes you the chatterbox, not me.” Paula turned her back on him and instead gave her attention to professor Sinistra, an attractive witch who taught arithmancy.
Severus frowned and growled deep in his throat. “Cheeky little upstart.” He muttered under his breath.
Paula casually ran a hand down the back of her hair.
Somehow, Severus’ fried egg exploded, splattering him in yolk. He let out a grunt of surprise and left the hall to take a shower and change his robes, wondering what the hell just happened.
Professor Flitwick almost fell from his pile of cushions when he saw what happened. He had been admiring Paula and that was why he noticed the slight flick of her finger as she ran a hand through her hair. He was delighted when Severus’ egg exploded, having listened in to their conversation. He decided Miss Vance was going to be very entertaining to say the least.
Paula’s first lesson of the day was Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff first years. The first thing she did was ask them what they already knew, and for a demonstration of each and every spell, charm and hex, they knew, and which they were capable of casting.
The first to stand up was a young Hufflepuff witch named Emelda. She claimed to know several hexes taut her by an older brother and Paula told her to cast them on her.
The girl was horrified. “No Professor I can’t do that. I will get into terrible trouble and worse, you would get hurt.”
“Emelda, I need to know exactly what you can do. You will not get into trouble, and if I were unable to protect myself, I would not be standing where I am now. So go ahead, and give each hex as much intent as you can muster. Do not be afraid of hurting me, you wont.”
Emelda raised her wand and looked at Paula nervously.
“Emelda, you have two choices, either you cast, or I take the initiative and take you down. Which is it to be? This class is for learning, I do not play the fool. Now hex me.” She suddenly shouted, frightening the girl into action.
“Expelliarmus.” Emelda cried. Her eyes widened when the spell hit the Professor harmlessly and bounced back at her. She screwed her eyes tight shut, ready for the hex to hit her, only it did not.
“Where did it go?” She asked, looking round at her classmates who all seemed to be in a state of awe.
“Had you kept your eyes open, you would have seen the spell dissipate. As it was, you chose to close them at a most inopportune moment. Consider yourself dead Emelda. Were I the enemy, I would have avada’d you by now. Next” She called, dismissing the girl.
Next up was Michael Spawn, a Ravenclaw who seemed a bit more confident then Emelda.
Without waiting for an invitation, he sent an impedimenta at Paula and found himself staring at no one.
“Boo.” Paula said behind him.
He whirled round to face her, startled. “Ho …how? How did you do that?”
“That is one of the things you will learn if you pay attention in my class Michael. Good work, sit down. Next.”
For the next hour, she tested them, never once coming to harm or allowing any of the students to hurt themselves or each other. She left several of them in sudden, various predicaments, from sitting cross-legged under a desk, to being glued to the classroom wall for several minutes. Not one of the students heard her utter a single spell and left the lesson feeling a sense of respect for their Professor.
