LEECH
Chapter 4
He quickly administered a mild sleeping potion to the girl, ensuring she’d stay asleep long enough for him to make his observations, then stepped casually back into the hallway, warding the door behind him.
He ventured through corridors, up and down stairwells and poked his head through numerous doors. Some rooms were occupied, others were devoid of anything but old iron bedsteads, threadbare blankets tucked in neatly and battered wardrobes. The occasional room would have a slightly less shabby comforter, perhaps a photo or two, the odd drawing fastened to the wall. Other than that the place was completely bereft of anything that would give the appearance of somewhere a child could call home. Yes it was clean, surprisingly so, but in a sterile way, at least as sterile as one could get in a run down area in thirties England.
Voices attracted his attention and he moved down to the end of the corridor. If his memory of the pensive was correct, he was just in time to witness Tom Riddle as an eight year old child.
There he was, a rather scrawny looking boy, reasonably good looking. His clothes like others he’d seen during his investigation, clean, well worn and rather mismatched. Still, even now the boy seemed to carry himself with an air of superiority. His dark hair neatly combed, shoulders straight as he made his way towards the end of the corridor where Severus stood watching.
Tom stopped short at the sound of a small voice accompanied by running footsteps.
“Tomtom. Tomtom. Wait for me.”
Tom rolled his eyes, but waited anyway. “What do you want now Kathy?”
“Wanna go with you. Where you goin?”
“I’m going to my room, go back to the others.” He started to walk away from her, then stopped again when the girl grabbed his sleeve.
“No. Don’t like the others. They mean to me alla time. Wanna go your room Tomtom. Please.”
Severus watched as the eight year old Tom gave Kathy, an exasperated look.
“Fine, but you keep your mouth shut and sit still. I want to read and I don’t want you interrupting me all the time.” He told the girl.
She smiled and grabbed his hand, looking adoringly up at him.
Tom looked slightly uncomfortable and shook her hand loose from his, but she refused to let go of him completely and grabbed his sleeve instead.
With a sigh he led her along the corridor.
“Its my birthday soon, on… “She screwed her face up in concentration as she tried to remember the date. “Novtober twenty six. Matron told me. I’ll be four. I gonna be a big girl when I’m four.”
Tom actually chuckled. “Kathy, your birthdays in October, not Novtober, and yes, you will be a big girl. Just remember that big girls keep their mouths shut and do what their betters tell them to do. Okay?”
Kathy nodded. She loved Tomtom. He was the only one who wasn’t mean to her. He stopped the others from picking on her and sometimes he let her sit on the end of his bed while he read a book. He pinched a picture book from one of the other kids once and if she was really good, and stayed quiet for long enough, he would get the book from his wardrobe and let her look at it.
She’d latched onto Tom ever since she could walk, holding onto his shirttails, babbling away at him, even though he mostly ignored her at first. Once he gave her a piggyback ride right through the main hall and she’d been devoted to him ever since. The other kids said Tom wasn’t normal, that he hurt them without even touching them, but Kathy didn’t believe them. He’d never done anything like that to her. Besides, they said she was strange too. The other kids complained they always felt drained when she’d played with them. So they avoided her for the most part, and the barbed comments they sometimes aimed at her when she tried to join in with their games often hurt.
Severus stepped out of the shadows as they approach and took note as Tom instinctively stopped and pressed Kathy behind him, shielding her from the strangers gaze.
Man and boy eyed each other for a few moments, then Severus placed a small smile on his face. “Good afternoon, I am Sir Stephen Prince. Your Matron, Mrs Cole has given me leave to wander the corridors of this institution. I take it you are a… resident.”
Tom nodded but said nothing.
Kathy peeped round his legs, her eyes wide as she stared at the stranger. She tugged at Toms shirt. When the boy peered down at her she whispered to him. “He’s one ‘o them posh ones Tomtom. If we’re real good, maybe ‘e’ll dopt us an be our dad.”
Her whisper, as with most small children was rather loud and Severus struggled to keep rein on his smirk.
Tom gave her a look that said ‘shut up’ as he pressed her back again.
“Yes Sir, though I don’t intend it to be permanent.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “Oh, so you have alternate… objectives. Such a young man with foresight is a rare occurrence.”
“Nothing concrete at the moment, but yes, I do have certain goals. If you would excuse us Sir, good day.”
Tom gave a small bow, which even now was curt, and continued on his way, pulling the little girl along with him.
Severus could hear her complaining that they should have stayed to talk with the man because he might have dopted them both and they could live happily ever after.
The opening and closing of a door muffled any reply she might have received.
Pausing to awaken Rosie, and assuring her that no, he would not report her for falling asleep when she should have been escorting him round the building, another quick visit with Mrs Cole, a polite refusal of more of the disgusting tea, and a hefty donation towards the upkeep of the orphanage, along with the promise of a monthly stipend to help until his next visit, and Severus was once again in the deserted alley.
A quick spin of the time turner and he moved forward six months.
Again his visit comprised of a visit with the Matron, before he was once again allowed to stroll the corridors without supervision. He vaguely wondered what had happened to young Rosie, but as she was not important to his investigation, he put her from his mind. Again his visit was timed to coincide with events he’d seen in the pensive.
Tom’s door was slightly ajar so Severus had a clear view of them both. He was disillusioned and stood perfectly still as he watched the pair from the doorway.
Tom Riddle was lounging on his neatly made bed, a studious expression on his face while Kathy sat on the bottom of the bed with a picture book on her lap.
She was an average looking child with no distinctive features. Straight, mousy brown hair, brown eyes, rather thin like most of the children here, and a dress that was several sizes too big for her.
“Tomtom?”
“What?” The boy asked, not looking up from his book.
“When we grow up you’ll marry me wont you?”
Tom snorted. “Yeah right. Look at your pictures Kathy.”
“An we’ll have lots of babies, but we wont ever let ’em get put in this place will we Tomtom?”
“No Kathy, we won’t.”
Severus wondered if his negative reply referred to marrying Kathy and having a family, or to the fact that he would not allow any offspring they might have to be placed in an orphanage.
Severus’ next two visits were similar. He observed the young Tom Riddle and Kathy Stoge, visited with Mrs Cole and made polite conversation while continuing his donations.
He even paid an extra visit on Christmas day to witness the children opening their presents and enjoying their Christmas meal, for which he’d left a hefty donation with explicit instruction that it be used to ‘brighten the childrens day’.
Unfortunately Mrs Cole was to be found unconscious in her office, clearly inebriated, while the children continued as normal. There was no tree, not gifts, and no special dinner laid on for them.
