The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 4
“What you are, what I am. Did you notice anything strange on your walk through the village this morning? Or even at the inn last night?”
“Well...everything’s kind of old fashioned. Like medieval or something. And the people wear the oddest clothes. But Maxi didn’t really give me chance to stop and look. Why, what am I missing here?”
“Lucy, did strange things ever happen around you that you couldn’t explain?”
Lucy frowned. Her gran would send her packing if she told her some of those things. “They might have.” She said evasively.
Hetty smiled, the girl didn’t need to tell her any more. “Watch.” She said. Palming her wand, Hetty aimed at the fireplace.
“Shit!” Lucy screeched, jumping from the sofa and backing away.
“Don’t curse dear, it’s not nice. Now calm down, it was a simple spell. Lucy you’re a witch, same as I’m a witch.”
“No way. I mean you might be, are you really a witch? I’m not a witch. Oh gran, you’re scary. Do that again.”
Hetty smiled. Her granddaughter was scared, yet fascinated at the same time. Hetty turned and disappeared, only to reappear behind Lucy. “Boo.”
“Aah. Wha...what did you do? How did you do that?”
“Not bad for an old lady eh? It’s called apparition. It’s something you’ll learn to do in time. Now, I suggest you follow those ”
Lucy turned to see her suitcases hover above the floor, then begin making their way up the stairs.
“To you room, and unpack. First door on the left at the top of the stairs. Then we can see about a trip to Diagon Alley. You’re going to need a wand my girl.”
“A what? Gran you...”
She left the sentence unfinished when Hetty held up the sleek piece of tapered wood then pointed it at the sofa. The sofa suddenly turned into a table.
“Whoa!”
The table became a small shrub set in a nice blue and white pot, before returning to it’s original form. “These are all things you’ll learn to do in time, but first you need a wand. Unless of course...”
“Unless what gran?” Lucy noted a mischievous twinkle in her grans eyes.
Before she realised what was happening, water shot from the end of her grans wand aiming straight for her.
In a split second Lucy had raised her hands protectively and the water simply disappeared.
“Oh! Oh! Oh!” Was all she could utter.
“Yes. I knew it. You have the legacy. Nonetheless, a wand will still be required. Hurry up.”
Lucy headed for the stairs on shaky legs, wondering what the heck just happened.
The sight of her room momentarily shook all thoughts of what happened from her mind. Never in her life had she ever imagined a room like this. And if she had, she certainly wouldn’t expect it to be hers. “Oh gran.” She breathed, eyes wandering everywhere. The room was large, much larger than should have been possible in a house this size. Two arched windows set into one wall, with several layers of white lace draped to the sides, a four poster bed with yards and yards of the same white lace held at each corner with pale grey and pink trimmed sashes. More of the while lace and over the top of the high posts. The mattress was covered with a pastel pink and pale grey duvet, so thick it could have served as a mattress on it’s own. The floor, lower walls, and bed frame were all in a rich dark wood, as was the wardrobe, chest and dressing table. Pink and grey rugs were scattered over the floor and a small sofa in pink and grey sat in front of a dark marble fireplace.
“Gran.” She called from the top of the stairs. “I think you gave me the wrong room.”
“No I didn’t, that’s your room. Do you like it?” Hetty asked from the bottom of the stairs.
“No I don’t, I love it. Gran it’s beautiful.”
Hetty smiled up at her. “Good, then you won’t mind putting your things away and getting changed before we have a spot of lunch and get going.”
Still unable to believe her luck, Lucy quickly put her things away, found the bathroom further down the landing, then washed and changed. She was shocked when she looked in the mirror.
“Oh God.” Her face had changed. Well not so much changed, more, matured. She looked nearer twenty than sixteen. Her mind suddenly wandered back to her thoughts when she approached the Three Broomsticks. With all that was happening, she wondered...”Nah, can’t be. Can it?”
“I suppose all your clothes are muggle?”
“Pardon?”
“Your clothes. Oh sorry, muggle is a term used for none magical folk. You are not a muggle, your clothes are. While they’re fine for running over the hills with Maxi here, you need robes. Much more fitting I think.”
“Robes?” Lucy half laughed when she said this. “You mean those old fashioned things everyone was wearing in the village? Gran, I can’t wear those. I mean...you wear them. I’m not trying to be rude but, well, you’re old and I’m...well, not.”
“Nonsense, age has nothing to do with it. You’ll see, once we’re in Diagon Alley.”
Lucy frowned at her plate. She didn’t want to get into an argument with the woman, she’d not even been here a full day, but robes? Everyone was gonna laugh at her for petes sake. Hopefully her gran would tire easily and Lucy could drag her away from the shops before they bought anything too... old womany.
After shutting Maxi in the house, something he protested strongly against, Lucy looked round the side of the house. “Gran, where’s the car?”
“The what dear?”
“The car, to get us to the Alley, or wherever?”
“No car, just hold tight to my hand.”
“Gran, I don’t hold hands. I’m not a kid anymore.” Lucy could feel her face colouring at the thought of holding the older woman’s hand as they traipsed round the shops.
“Hetty smiled at her granddaughter. She certainly had a lot to learn. Not giving her time to argue further, Hetty grabbed her wrist and apparated.

“Ugh!.” Lucy wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, then retched again in the dim, narrow back alley they’d appeared in. As fast as Lucy emptied her stomach, Hetty spelled the deposit away. Lucy’s hair was stuck up in the air, Hetty’s way of preventing it from getting soiled.
“Here, drink this and you’ll feel much better.”
Lucy scowled at her gran. “You sure it won’t make me worse? What did you do to me?”
“It will settle your tummy, just drink it dear, then I’ll clean you up and we can move out of this dung hole.” Hetty looked distastefully at the muggle alley, with it’s overflowing bins and discarded food wrappers.
Lucy drunk the small bottle of gloop and was surprised at how quickly it worked. “What was that stuff? I feel fine now. But gran, please don’t do that thing to me again. What was it?”
“We apparated, it’s a form of travel and much more convenient than the muggle way. Come on, follow me.” Hetty waved her wand at Lucy’s hair so it fell back round her shoulders.
Lucy followed her out the alley and they made their way along a couple of streets before Hetty stopped outside a door Lucy would have missed, had it not been pointed out to her.
When they stepped inside Lucy rooted to the spot. “Gran, what is this place?” She whispered, looking round the interior. It was clean, though slightly shabby, but the wasn’t what got her attention. It was the ugly little creatures sitting at a table to one side.
“The Leaky Cauldron. Oh them, they’re goblins, best not stare, we don’t want to upset them. They can get quite nasty.” Hetty whispered back.
“Hetty G, is that really you?”
“I’ve always been me Tom. How are you?”
“Well, thank you. Who’s your friend?”
“This is my granddaughter, Lucy. We have a lot of shopping to do Tom, can’t stay.”
Lucy shot a quick smile at the bartender and ran after the old woman, who’d suddenly become very sprightly on her feet.
“Now watch closely Lucy, I want you to remember what I do.”
Lucy watched her gran tap her wand on a series of bricks on the wall in the back yard of the Leaky Cauldron. “Why are you...Wow!”
Her words died in her mouth when the bricks moved aside to form an archway. Through the arch she could see a long, cobbled street. “Is this for real?” She asked as they stepped through. The place was unbelievable. “Gran that shop sells cauldrons. And broomsticks, look.” She pointed to the other side of the road.
“I know dear. First we need to go to Gringotts so I can arrange an allowance for you. Then we’ll go to Ollivanders.”
“Oh no gran it’s you don’t have to do that. I have money of my own and I get so much a month from the government while I’m still in full time education.”
“Muggle money I suppose. You won’t be able to spend it here. You save it, there’s plenty in the family vaults.”
‘Family vaults?’ Lucy wondered again of her gran was a bit cuckoo.
Hetty smiled to herself. Lucy was easy to read, she no more knew how to close her mind than she knew how to ride a broom.
Lucy was awestruck when they entered Gringotts bank. At least until she saw all the goblins. She listened carefully while her gran spoke with one of them, then scowled at the goblin when it scrutinised her directly.
When another of the little creatures arrived to lead them through a door, Lucy absentmindedly took hold of Hetty’s hand for security.
