Train Journeys & the Sorting Hat
“What
in the blue blazes is going on?” Robby Ray said to no one in
particular as they stood before the barrier between platforms 9 and
10. He looked over at the kids who were all standing behind him
dressed in normal clothes but if one looked inside their trunks they
would find several spell books (Jackson had even been so excited that
he’d bought several extras just to read, it had almost given
Robby Ray a heart attack), cauldrons, ingredients most of which he’d
never heard of before, and wands. It had been crazy trying to get
everything together this morning and now things were getting a little
more complicated.
“There
is no platform nine and three quarters.” Jackson said looking
at his ticket again and then up at the solid wall.
"You
don't say Captain Obvious." Lilly said sarcastically and threw
him a glance. Before Jackson could come up with a comback they heard
the sound of a woman calling to a group of children to hurry up or
they’d miss the train to Hogwarts.
“This
place is far more crowded today that usual.” She said as she
came to a stop close to where Jackson, Lilly, Miley, Oliver and Robby
Ray stood. “Okay, Ginny why don’t you go first and stay
close to the barrier so that way we can all stay together.” A
young girl with red hair and features that were similar to the Ron
Weasley boy they’d met the other day nodded and pushed her
trolley toward the barrier. Miley waited to see her crash while Lilly
buried her head in Miley’s shirtsleeve. But nothing came, the
girl simply disappeared through the solid wall.
“Whoa.”
Jackson said under his breath so that no one would hear him and Miley
stared wide eyed at the barrier. She was just about to say something
when she heard someone calling her name.
“Miley.”
She turned and saw Harry standing among the group with the short
little woman who’d just sent the girl through the wall. She
started toward him and him toward her.
“Hey,
how’s it going?” She asked trying to sound as if she
wasn’t absolutely amazed that she’d just watched a girl
walk through a wall. But Harry saw right through that, he’d had
the same reaction his first year.
“I
know, it’s kind of weird but you get used to it eventually.”
He told her nodding his head toward the wall. Miley smiled and nodded
her head.
“Well,
um, how exactly do you…Ya know get onto the platform?”
She asked not wanting to sound like a complete idiot even though she
felt like one. Harry smiled and pointed toward the wall.
“You
just walk at the wall and close your eyes if you want but just walk
straight at it and it’ll take you to the platform. Let me get
my stuff and I’ll help you.” He walked back over to the
group and spoke with Hermione and Ron who were the only ones of the
original group left other than the woman. Harry smiled at the short
woman and said something. She looked at Miley for a moment before
turning back to him and speaking as she walked toward her.
“As
long as you know who she is Harry dear.” The woman told him as
they reached her and held out her hand to Miley. Miley gripped it
firmly and shook. “I’m Molly Weasley dear.” She
introduced herself and looked at the group standing behind Miley.
“Are you all a group of late-bloomers?” Miley nodded her
head and Mrs Weasley smiled.
“I’m
Miley Stewart, this is my brother Jackson Stewart, my father Robby
Ray Stewart and my two best friends Lilly Truscott and Oliver Oken.”
Miley introduced them and the woman went around shaking hands with
everyone. Then she turned back to look at the clock and made a
shocked gasp.
“Well,
you’d better hurry. There isn’t much time left before the
train leaves. Well off you go Ron.” She told the red haired boy
who took off soon followed by Hermione and then Jackson, who was to
excited to wait and Harry just told him to go on ahead. Then Lilly
and Oliver went in quick succession and all that was left was Miley
and Harry. He smiled at her and nodded his head toward the barrier.
“Go
on, it doesn’t hurt.” He said and she took a deep breath
before starting to push her trolley toward the solid brick wall that
everyone had already gone through. She closed her eyes when she got
closer and there was a brief moment of silence before she burst
through the other side and was bombarded with the sounds of the busy
train station again. She opened her eyes and turned to watch as
Harry, Mrs Weasley and her Dad came through the barrier quickly.
“Told
you.” He said and together they pushed their trolleys down
toward the scarlet steam engine that was sitting beside the crowded
platform. She smiled at several of the people that passed by them and
some smiled back while others turned to get a better look at her and
still others turned up their noses and mutter insults under their
breaths.
“Are
all the people at Hogwarts this mean?” Miley asked when one
girl who was already wearing her robes with a green and white
stripped tie around her neck looked at her and turned up her nose
muttering what sounded like Mudblood under her breath.
“If
you are a Muggle born then you’ll likely get called names by
the Slytherin’s but other than that most of them are pretty
nice. When their not gawking at you.” He added when several
girls who looked like they were in about their first year stopped in
the middle of the platform and stared at Harry before giggling and
breaking out into whispers.
“And
I thought being Hannah Montana was bad.” She said out loud
before she could stop herself. She looked over at Harry who was
staring back at her.
“I
thought your name was Miley.” He looked at her suspiciously and
watched as she turned a light shade of pink that made her look so
damn cute.
“Yeah
it is. It’s a long story; I’ll explain it to you later.”
She told him as they loaded their trunks onto the train and then went
in search of an empty compartment toward the back. They found Lilly,
Jackson and Oliver already settled into one and dunked inside with
them. Oliver was digging around in the luggage rack where he’d
put his trunk for something while Lilly and Jackson were both sitting
in opposite corners of the compartment reading. This whole being
witches and wizards thing was changing them all into completely
different people.
“Found
it.” Oliver said and pulled a bag of goodies out of his trunk
and hopped off the seat before turning and seeing Miley and Harry.
“Hey guys,” he said and sat back down by the window to
pig out. Harry help Miley put her trunk up and then turned to exit
the compartment.
“Where
ya going?” She asked sweetly as she sat down beside Lilly who
didn’t even look up. Jackson looked over at her and inclined
his head by way of greeting then buried his nose back in the book and
she shook her head and rolled her eyes. She’d never understand
her brother.
“To
say goodbye to Mrs Weasley. You might want to hurry and say good-bye
to your father.” He told her as he walked off and left her
seating there. He’d be back though, she knew it.
“I’m
going to tell Dad by, anyone coming?.” She asked the
compartment at large who all put down what they were doing to follow
her. They stepped off the train and out into the crowded place again
and found Robby Ray chatting with a crazy haired looking woman and a
man who looked as if he were sick.
“Hey
bud.” He said when Miley came over to him. “This is
Tonks, she’s an Auror or a dark wizard hunter and this is Remus
Lupin, he was a Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at
Hogwarts for a while.” The group of teens smiled at the two
adults and turned to Robby Ray for a quick goodbye as the trains
whistle sounded.
“I’ll
owl you.” Miley said and laughed at the thought. “Get it,
I’ll owl you.” Robby Ray shook his head and gave her a
hug before stepping back and shaking Jackson’s hand as he
refused to be seen hugging his father.
“Keep
trying bud. Maybe one day you’ll be a funny as your old man.”
She rolled her eyes and together with Oliver, Lilly and Jackson she
boarded the train and found their way back to their compartment.
Miley sat down and folded her legs under her before leaning her head
against the window to try and get some sleep while Jackson and Lilly
went back to reading their textbooks and Oliver sniffed through the
bag of wizard sweets he’d purchased yesterday in Diagon Alley.
Miley thought about the rooms they had stayed in at the Leaky
Cauldron and shuddered. They weren’t filthy but it wouldn’t
have hurt to have dusted them either or to have bought new
mattresses. The one she and Lilly had slept on was lumpy and hard but
looking over at Lilly she realized the other girl showed no signs of
droziness. She could have slept on a rock and still woke up refreshed
and ready to go.
She
looked out the window as the train pulled away from the station and
entered the vast forest land of the English mountains. She watched
the scenery roll by and listened to the chatter from outside in the
hall. She wondered briefly where Harry was but knew that he’d
come and find them when he was finished with whatever he was doing.
As
she thought about him she thought of those bright green eyes that had
shinned in Madam Malkin’s shop and how he’d smiled at her
today when helping her onto the platform and how his muscles had
bunched when he’d lifted her trunk into the luggage rack. She
thought about him as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep,
the train rattling merrily down the tracks and the other occupants of
the room doing their own things. The last thing she remembered
hearing before she feel asleep was the rustle of Oliver’s bag
as he reached in for another sweet and the sound of Lilly and Jackson
turning the page in their books. Yes, this was going to be a good
time after all.
HPHMHPHMHPHMHPHMHPHMHPHM
“Miley
wake up.” She heard Lilly's voice as if it where from a
distance and groaned moving a little to get her to stop shaking her.
She was in the middle of one of the best dreams she’d ever had
in her life. She and Harry were sitting on the beach back in Malibu,
the sun shining brightly on their faces as they stared into each
others eyes and smiled while sharing a milk shake from Rico’s.
“Miley wake up or I’ll use you as my genie pig for one my
spells.” Miley immediately shot up and nearly knocked Lilly
over.
“You
will do no such thing.” She said and rubbed her eyes with the
back of her hand. “Why’d you have to do that I was having
the best dream?”
“Yeah,
you said Harry’s name about fifty times.” Jackson
complained from his corner seat by the door where he was squished
between Hermione and the wall but he was too engrossed in his book to
mind. Miley had to look at him twice to makes sure she was seeing him
right. His full attention was on the book in his hands and he didn’t
even bother to look up from it when he’d spoken. What was the
world coming to? She looked over and saw Ron and Oliver sitting on
the floor chowing down on sweets and then over at Harry who was
sitting in Lilly’s old seat. He smiled at her and she blushed.
“Sweet
niblets.” She said and pushed up to stretch. She looked around
and noticed that everyone was wearing their robes but her.
“You’d
better go change. Hermione says we’ll be there in no time.”
Lilly told her before sitting down where Miley had lay sleeping. She
stepped on the seat and opened her trunk extracting her robes, makeup
and hair products along with the uniform outfit she had to wear
underneath her robes and the stupid looking shoes and socks she’d
had to buy to go with them. She turned and walked out of the
compartment and down the hall toward the bathroom which she had to
wait for. The girl who stepped out was the same little red haired
girl who’d gone first on the platform with Mrs Weasley.
“Hey.”
She said before she breezed by Miley and took off down the hall to
dunking into the compartment Miley had just exited. Shaking her head
she went into the bathroom and changed. She took extra care with her
makeup and hair because she was going to have to go back into the
compartment with Harry. She wanted to look her best, she thought as
she applied a layer of shinny ever-wear lip gloss to her lips. She
gave her cheeks a quick pinch to color them then stood back and
studied herself. Not bad at all considering the sway and launch of
the train beneath her feet.
She
exited the bathroom and made her way down the hallway toward their
compartment. The hall was pretty much cleared now and she was glad.
All those people before had made her nervous. She was just about to
open the door when the nasty boy from Diagon Alley appeared just down
the hall and started up toward her. Behind him came two very rough
looking boys she had never seen before in her life and never wanted
to see again. Before they could see her she dunked inside the
compartment and put her back against the door.
“What
is it?” Hermione asked as she stopped in the middle of showing
Lilly and Jackson something with her wand; the book Jackson had been
reading hanging suspended in the air before them. Oliver was still
sitting on the floor with Ron and as they ate they were chatting
about some sport that involved broomsticks. Neither seemed to notice
her re-entry into the compartment.
“I
just saw that Malfoy boy and didn’t want to run into him or his
two little friends.” She said as she came over and sat down
beside Harry.
“Crabbe
and Goyle you mean. Those two have brains the size of you little
finger and their just Malfoy’s lap dogs. They’re nothing
for you to worry about.” He told her as she stood up again to
put her things away. She could feel his eyes on her as she stretched
to put her ordinary clothes away and retrieve her wand. She looked
over at the snow white owl who was sleeping peacefully in its cage
beside the two black owls that she and Lilly had bought.
“Whose
owl is this?” She asked reaching inside the cage and stroking a
finger down its feathers. The owl cracked an eye open and looked at
her before stepping a little closer to her outstretched finger so she
could stroke it once more.
“That’s
Hedwig,” Harry explained, “Hagrid, the gamekeeper at
Hogwarts, bought her for me on my first trip to Diagon Alley.”
Miley turned to see Harry standing below her looking up at the owl
that was still snoozing but cooing as she stroked its fathers. Miley
smiled at him and he smiled back. She looked deep into his eyes and
felt as if her feet had left the floor and she was floating. She
sighed but never broke eye contact with Harry. He continued to stare
at her and smile until they heard the sound of Lilly's excited
screech and Hermione laughing and clapping. The two looked over and
saw Lilly holding her wand high while the bag that had held Oliver’s
sweets was floating in the air in front of her. Jackson was still
trying to get his textbook to float and looked over to observe
Lilly’s floating bag before turning back to his book, muttering
the charm and waving his wand as Hermione had instructed. This time
the book rose in the air and he sat up a little straighter and pushed
his chest out with pride.
“I
did it.” Lilly said looking up at Miley who smiled and nodded.
“Cool.
Can you show me how to make things float?” Hermione nodded and
motioned for Miley to move closer and proceeded to show her how the
spell worked until the train started slowing down. Miley had just
managed to get a box of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans to
rise from the floor when the train stopped and they had to get off.
She tucked her wand away in the inside pocket of her cloak and
followed everyone out. She, Lilly, Oliver and Jackson stepped onto
the platform and immediately came a stop, this time without Lilly’s
screeching. Not two feet away from them stood the biggest man they’d
ever seen before in their lives.
“Hey
there Hagrid.” Harry said walking up to the man and giving him
a hug. Hermione and Ron both said hello before making for the
carriages that seemed to be drawn by nothing at all.
“Howdy
Harry.” The man said in a voice that was large and booming
making several people turn and look at him.
“Hagrid
I’d like you to meet some new friends of ours.” Harry
said moving toward the group of kids who were staring up at him.
“This is Miley, Lilly, Jackson and Oliver. Their new here at
Hogwarts, from the States.” Hagrid looked at the group and let
out a great laugh.
“Oh
yeah, Dumbledore told me ter be ‘pecting the lot of ya.”
He said and reached out one massive hand to Miley who took it and
shook it the best she could. “Nice ter have ya ‘ere.”
He said before turning and bellowing above the crowd. “All
first years this way to the boats.” He turned back to them.
“That means ya to.” He said and they followed him along
with a large group of other students down toward a black river. They
all got into boats Miley, Lilly, Oliver and Jackson all ending up in
a boat together. Hagrid smiled at them from the boat in front of them
as they sailed away in the darkness. It only took a couple of
minutes for them to catch sight of the grand old castle that housed
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
“Oh
my god.” Lilly said grabbing a hold of Miley’s arm. “It
looks like something out of a movie. I bet they don’t have
electricity.” Miley survey the area and didn’t see any
power lines to or from the castle and no poles that would indicate
differently. The two looked back at Oliver who was talking to
Jackson. He noticed the look on their faces and smiled.
“Told
you so.” He said sticking his tongue out at them before turning
back to Jackson. “So anyway, that Ginny girl is so hot. I think
she digs me. Did you see the way she was acting when she came into
the compartment on the train? She was all like ‘hello, my names
Ginny’ and batting her eyelashes and such. I was like ‘oh
yeah, I’m Oliver Oken, or Smokin’ Oken if you want’
then she started laughing and sat down with me and her brother Ron.
She kept looking at me and smiling. Oh yeah, she digs me.”
Jackson shook his head and rolled his eyes as he sat with Oliver at
the back of the boat with his arms crossed over his chest. It was to
damn cold for this.
“I
wouldn’t have notice. I was busy practicing that levitation
spell. Which worked.” He said proudly with a smile before his
face dropped again. “I wish I’d have had more time to
read that book A History of Magic, I was just to the part where
Volde...I mean You-Know-Who was trying to destroy the wizarding
world. It’s the same one that’s at it now, the
You-Know-Who guy that Professor Dumbledore was telling us about when
he came to visit.” Miley started at him in disbelief and shook
her head.
“I
can’t believe I’m going to say this but...are you
actually reading your textbooks?” Jackson turned and looked at
her.
“Yeah,
they’re a lot more interesting that the ones in the Muggle
world. I mean, who wants to read about George Washington crossing the
Delaware River when you could read about how a man tried to take over
an entire world using magic and was stopped by a baby who is still
alive. I would choose being a wizard to being a Muggle any day of the
week.” He said as they landed on the shore not far from the
school. They followed Hagrid and the rest of the first years up the
slope in front of the school and through a pair of heavy oak doors.
As soon as they stepped inside Miley and Lilly’s fear of no
electricity was confirmed but in place of lights torches and candles
burned and it provided an effect Miley doubted would have been
achieved using electric lighting.
“Evening
Professor McGonagall,” Hagrid said to a tall woman in dark
green robes who was standing at the foot of the large staircase in
the entrance hall looking at the group he had just brought in. She
nodded to him and then stepped down in front of the group.
“Thank
you Hagrid for bringing them up. Now, if you will please follow me
the sorting will be held shortly.” The woman named Professor
McGonagall said as she turned and led the group past a large room
where all of the students were seating.
“Know
what house you’re going to be in?” A short girl from the
front asked as she turned and looked over her shoulder at Oliver. She
had long blonde hair and a bright smile with big brown eyes that put
Miley in mind of a model on that Project Runway show she used to
watch all the time.
“What
houses are there?” Oliver asked stepping up and getting in line
behind the girl.
“Well,
there’s Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and…”
she bent a bit closer and whispered, “Slytherin, that’s
one of the worst houses. I highly doubt I’ll get in it because
I’m a half-blood, my dad was Muggle, and they usually don’t
like it if you come from a mixed house hold. I suppose that being in
Ravenclaw wouldn’t be so bad, or Hufflepuff but I’m
shooting for Gryffindor that’s the house that Harry Potter’s
in and he is just so dreamy.” Miley narrowed her eyes at the
girl and shook her head. Did she just honestly say that out loud?
“Yeah,
I guess I’ll be shooting for anything but Slytherin.”
Oliver turned to Miley who was still staring through narrowed eyes at
the blonde girl. “What if we don’t get into the same
house?” As if the idea had just occurred to all of them they
stopped when the rest of the line did and looked at each other.
“I
don’t know.” Miley said looking at Lilly. If she and
Lilly were not in the same house with Oliver then she was going to
demand that Dumbledore take her wand back and send her home or put
her in the same house as her friends. She looked at Jackson who was
staring at Lilly. The look on his face was one that she had never
seen before. He looked like he was sad at the thought of them not
being together. But before she could mention it Professor McGonagall
began to lead them through another set of double doors and into the
Great Hall where all the other students sat. In the front of the room
was a stool and on top was a rugged looking pointed hat. Miley looked
over her shoulder at the others and they all shrugged but when they
stopped Jackson stepped forward and explained it.
“I
read about it in that book I got Hogwarts: a History. It’s the
called the Sorting Hat. It takes a look inside your thoughts and
tells you what house you’ll be best in. Once the hat makes its
decision that’s finally.” They watched as McGonagall
called the first name on their list. It was a girl who looked
petrified but she walked forward and sat down. McGonagall placed the
Sorting Hat on her head and it feel down over her eyes.
“HUFFLEPUFF!”
It shouted and a group of kids at one of the four long tables around
the room began to clap as the girl rushed toward it. The same thing
went on for what seemed like hours until they reached Oliver.
“Oken,
Oliver.” Professor McGonagall said and Oliver swallowed before
walking forward. Miley and Lilly whispered good luck as he walked. He
sat down on the stool and the Sorting Hat was placed over his head
and they waited and waited and waited.
“Great,
Oliver gets up there and breaks it.” Lilly whispered she and
the rest of the students started becoming restless.
“We
can’t eat until the sorting is done.” Jackson pointed out
and finally after what seemed like forever the Sorting Hat yelled
Gryffindor and the table to the far left stood up and clapped. He
rushed over and sank down between Ginny and Hermione. Several more
people went before finally it was Jackson’s turn.
“Stewart,
Jackson.” The tall old women called and Jackson stepped
forward. She had barely placed the hat on his head before it screamed
Gryffindor and the table stood up and clapped again. Miley swallowed
because it was now her turn and Lilly squeezed her arm and mouthed
good luck which Miley mouthed back.
“Stewart,
Miley.” She stepped up and sat down and the hat dropped onto
her head.
‘Oh,
lots of courage I see, you are very trustworthy and brave, yes. Oh,
and you can keep a secret like no other. Better put you into
Gryffindor.’ Miley sighed with relief as the hat was removed
from her head and she ran off toward the table to join the others.
She stared up as more people went then finally it was Lilly’s
turn.
“Truscott,
Lilly.” McGonagall called and Lilly just like the others
stepped forward and sat down. The hat was about three inches from her
head when it shouted its answer.
“GRYFFINDOR!”
Miley stood up and clapped along with Jackson and Oliver and when
Lilly got in distance Miley reached out and hugged her.
“See,
I knew everything would be alright.” She told her as they sat
down and continued to watch the rest of the sorting.
Several
other kids came to join the Gryffindor table and Miley felt a little
smug when the blonde from the line was sent to Hufflepuff with a
dejected look on her face. Miley was sitting between Harry and Ron
while Lilly sat on the other side between Jackson and a boy named
Neville Longbottom. The boy seemed like quite a ditz but Lilly really
seemed to enjoy talking to him but as she looked over at Jackson she
noticed that he looked slightly annoyed. What was his problem? But
even as she thought it the plates disappeared and dessert popped up
in its place.
“Oh
my god.” She heard Oliver say from his seat and then turned and
watched as both he and Ron reached for everything within arms reach.
They had cleaned out Oliver’s large bag of sweets on the train
then bought more from the little old lady who pushed the trolley
around and then they had each consumed more food while seating here
than Miley had likely eaten in most of her life. She could not see
how they could still be hungry or have room to eat more.
She
looked over to her right and noticed Harry was picking at his
dessert. He looked sad and lost, just staring off and not really
seeing the bits of food he was bringing up to his mouth. He nearly
ate a large bit of the gold and maroon confetti that was lying on the
table when she reached out and pushed his hand away from his mouth.
“Careful,
I don’t think that’s eatable.” She smiled at him
and he gave her a sad smile before picking the piece of confetti off
of his fork and shoving the bite of chocolate pie into his mouth. “Do
you wantta talk about it?” Miley asked as he went back to
picking at his dessert and looking lost. He shook his head and put
down his fork.
“Not
really.” He said and with that got up and left the Great Hall
with a quick 'I’ll
be back'. Miley
stared after him and felt some of his sadness rubbing off on her. She
wondered what was wrong with a boy whom every time she had met him
seemed so lively and upbeat. Maybe it was better that she didn’t
push him or try to find out what was wrong, maybe he just didn't want
to tell anyone about it. But that had never been in Miley’s
nature. She turned back to say something to Lilly and found her and
Jackson arguing with each other in whispers.
“Oh,
well, that changes everything doesn’t it?” Jackson
whisper-yelled at Lilly who crossed her arms over her chest and shook
her head.
“What
does it matter to you anyway?” She shot back and stared at him
waiting for his answer. He made a very male grunt deep in his throat
and turned away from her and started to shovel dessert into his
mouth. Miley looked at Lilly who looked back and shrugged her
shoulders before turning her attention back to Neville who was
blushing and staring down at his plate.
“Sorry,
Neville. Jackson is being a bit of an ass tonight.” She said
shooting him a look over her shoulder to which he rolled his eyes and
continued to eat at a fast pace. “Anyway, what were you saying
about that game…Quidditch I think you called it?” Miley
raised a eyebrow and looked at the two.
“What
kind of game is that?” She put in and Neville immediately
became redder than he had been a moment ago.
“It’s
a game that you play while flying on a broomstick. Apparently each
house here has a team and Harry is the captain of ours.” Lilly
told her as she smiled at Neville who suddenly seemed very nervous.
Miley took pity on the poor boy.
“Oh,
well, when Neville gets finished telling you about it you’ll
have to tell me?” She said and turned back to her plate which
was empty. She wasn’t really hungry and she was actually
getting kind of bored. She looked to her side where Ron sat dutifully
beside Hermione who was watching him eat through narrowed eyes.
“How
many times do I have to tell you not to chew with your mouth open
like some kind of idiot? I swear to you Ronald Weasley what I see in
you I’ll never know.” Ron looked at her and gave her a
smile, chocolate covering his entire mouth.
“You
know you love me.” He teased and nudged her slightly with his
shoulder. Hermione blushed and dunked her head smiling to herself as
she picked up her own fork and started to make shapes with her
dessert.
“Hey,
Hermione.” Miley called down to her and the bushy haired girl
looked over at her bending slightly in front of Ron who gave a
frustrated groan and pushed her back a little. She glared at him and
he quickly lend back so she could see Miley.
“What
is it Miley?” She asked looking concerned when she didn’t
see Harry.
“I
was just wondering when the festivities where going to be over and we
could hit the sack.” Hermione turned away and looked up at the
staff table, her bushy hair getting in Ron’s face but he didn’t
say anything just brushed at it gently waiting for her to turn
around. She whipped her head back around to answer and noticed him
stroking her hair and glared at him again. Miley honestly didn’t
see how the two could stay together like they did because they fought
so much. That and Hermione was always being a little bit of a weirdo
about the things that Ron did and said.
“It
shouldn’t be long. Where’d Harry get off to?” She
asked looking around in search for her friend of six years.
“He
just said he’d be back and left. I have no clue where he went.”
Miley told her and watched as the young girls face dropped a little.
Miley was just about to question her on it when she felt someone
moving to seat down beside her and turned to see Harry. He looked
like he felt slightly better than when he had left the table and he
picked up his fork and took a few bites of the dessert on his plate
but before anyone could question him about his absence Dumbledore
stood and tables were instantly cleared. Miley looked up at the
headmaster and listened to his rather long and boring speech about
things that were going to be going on during the semester and things
that weren’t allowed in the school. She found herself instantly
hating that Mr Flitch guy who was the janitor or whatever. She looked
at him and his cat, Ms Norris, who were standing near the back of the
room watching the students. She thought he looked a bit like an old
hermit who was grumpy and in need of a good bath and some fresh
clothes.
“And
now, I’ll bid the lot of you a goodnight and I hope that you
are as excited as I am about the beginning of this school term. I
think that several changes are in store for our great school and most
of them have to do with you the students.” Dumbledore finally
closed after what seemed like forever and Miley stood with the rest
and she and Harry started up toward the Gryffindor dormitories. They
passed the blonde girl from the sorting line and Miley smiled at her
while she snorted and turned up her nose.
“He
wasn’t all that great away.” Miley heard her saying to
one of her friends who just shrugged and continued to stare at Harry.
“I’m
taking it you’re somewhat of a star around here?” Miley
said as they started up the stairs following behind the rest of the
group. Harry looked over at her and shrugged.
“I’m
the Boy-Who-Lived, the great Harry Potter with my lightening bolt
scare on my forehead. The baby who defeated Lord Volde…You-Know-Who
and has gone up against him and fought him four times in the past six
years, the boy that everyone is counting on to win them a war that
started long before I was even born.” Miley heard the note of
distain in his voice and reached over to put her hand on his arm and
stop him. They stood in an empty hallway not far from a large picture
of a fat woman in a pink dress who had flung open and everyone in
their group had disappeared behind.
“Harry,
I’m sorry I brought it up.” She said wanting to apologize
for having upset him but he just shook his head.
“It’s
not your fault Miley. Its mine, I just get so worked up about it
sometimes. I mean my name has been told to everyone born in the
wizarding world since that night when my parents were killed by that
evil bastard and no one seems to realize that I’m not some kind
of star because of it; I’m not going to use it as an excuse to
get what I want out of people. I just want to live a normal and
average life but that’s not going to happen anytime soon.”
Miley nodded her understanding and she really did understand. She had
felt the same why when her secret life as Hannah Montana had been
born. She had just wanted normal and simple but she couldn’t
have that and be the teen pop sensation all at the same time. She
could have given up her secret but when things had taken off she
hadn't been able to stop the upward spiral. But when she'd came to
Hogwarts she'd told her father she was going to give it all up, no
matter how much it hurt or broke the hearts of millions. She
couldn't be a teen pop star, a witch, and plain old Miley all at the
same time. It would have been too much for her.
“Harry,
I’m going to tell you something that not many people know.”
She watched as he looked down at her. He was nearly a head taller
than she was and she had to tilt her head back slightly to look up at
him. She looked around to make sure no one was listening, like it
would matter. Here in the wizarding world she was a nobody, most of
the students had probably never heard of her before. She turned back
to Harry and smiled. She could trust him. She knew it.
“In
the Muggle world, I was a teen pop star named Hannah Montana.”
