Three days. That was all it took for her to finally make up her mind, not that it had been all that hard. If she were honest with herself, she would admit that the decision had been made before she had even left Severus at the shop after their last conversation. Ironically, the three days had not been filled with the weighing of options, or pros and cons; there were none. Instead she had taken the time to prepare herself; that preparation had consisted primarily of borrowing a book.
As she padded barefoot up the wooden staircase, careful to keep her steps light and silent, she thought back to what she had learned. Over the past decade most of what she knew of Harry’s magical inheritance had been gleaned from conversations with Severus and a few with Harry. Honestly she had not really cared to learn all that much about the inheritance, her feelings being that the Harry she knew and loved would always be Harry, no matter what other powers or idiosyncrasies dwelled within his blood. She honestly couldn’t have cared less about Harry’s inheritance, for she loved the man, not his gifts— although those were obviously a bonus. Yet, knowing that a large part of her entrance into a triad with Severus and Harry was based on his Amoral nature, Luna felt it prudent to learn facts she had never previously bothered to know.
Relieved couldn’t begin to describe how she felt when she learned that she already knew most of what the book had to offer. Yet, there were a few items that surprised her. Not only was she likely not the last mate Harry would have over the course of his life, but more importantly her place in the relationship was and always would be subject to the goodwill and acceptance of the primary mate. She had no fear that she and Severus would remain on good terms, they were extremely close friends after all. Still, knowing that the first chosen sub took precedence over any subsequent mates did give her slight pause. Then she thought back to the kiss she and the older wizard had shared, and all the years in which they had been staunch friends and allies in protecting Harry and the kids. Those memories alone were enough to send her doubts beating a full retreat for good.
So, with her resolve in place, she stepped quietly out of the Floo and into Harry and Severus’ parlor, barefoot and clad in only a chiffon gown. A devilish smirk played across her lips as she realized that the Floo, although warded for entry by only those with permissions, had probably been left open for full-entry only for her. Given the hour, roughly 4 a.m., it was unlikely that either Harry or Severus would have been expecting guests, and would have most assuredly restricted the Floo to allow only firecalls from everyone else. She suspected that this had been the case for quite some time and it made her decision feel all the more right.
Climbing to the top of the stairs, Luna tiptoed to the double doors directly across from the stairwell and opened it carefully, making certain the hinges did not squeak and wake the two sleeping boys who slumbered within. She smiled brightly at the sight of Gabe, sprawled rather haphazardly across his twin bed, his bedcovers hanging off the bed, along with a tiny, bare foot. She moved quietly across the room to peer at Remmy, ever the sound sleeper, who snored softly in his crib along the far wall. The moonlight, dimmed by curtains, illuminated his peaceful face. Luna rested her hand lightly on his belly, reveling in the feel of the rise and fall of his tiny stomach as he inhaled and exhaled. She fought a tiny tear that tried its damnedest to escape her eye and turned as silently as she had approached back towards Gabe’s bed.
She almost giggled aloud at the sight before her. Remmy, though still a baby, had a vice grip on her heart. Yet, Gabe had taken root in her very soul. Perhaps because he was the first, or maybe it was his similarity to both his fathers that had done her in. Whatever the reason, Luna was certain that the little boy, even long after he had become a man, would forever be a child of her heart and spirit. She loved them equally, but Gabe had been with her the longest and that gave him a special place in her heart.
She used her magic to re-tuck the blankets around his skinny body, hoping the change in temperature once he was fully covered would not wake the child from what appeared to be deep sleep. She began making for the doors to the room, congratulating herself on her stealth, only to cringe a bit when she heard a small, sleepy voice murmur, “Muna?”
The blonde turned and padded back over to the bed, kneeling so that she could look into the angelic, slumberous face of Gabe. The Potter hair and eyes were apparently dominant traits, as Gabe was the spitting image of a prepubescent Harry.
“Shh, go back to sleep,” Luna cooed to the little boy, who had reached out and curled his arms around her neck, his sweet breath tickling her exposed collarbone as he nestled his face near her clavicle.
“Knew it was you. Smelled you,” Gabe mumbled groggily.
“Smelled me?” Luna asked, a little affronted. “What do I smell like?”
“Um…warm…and like …leaves or something. Like Gran-ma Molly’s oven in winter,” he finished, already falling back into slumber.
Luna stared at the sleeping child, a little nonplussed at his pronouncement, before swallowing the realization that little Gabe had indeed inherited not only Severus’ keen sense of smell, but apparently the little tyke could already sniff out subtle hints of pheromones. Given the fact that she was rife with anticipation to be claimed by the Amoral sleeping down the hall, it was little wonder the child had sniffed her out. Although he was a bit young yet, Luna was certain that both Harry and Severus would use this little development as a perfect opportunity to explain to Gabe a bit about the Amoral and the part it would forever play in his life.
Luna smirked at the grumpily, groggy frown that wrinkled Gabe’s brow as she carefully lowered him back to the mattress, placing a soft kiss above his brow.
“Rest, little one. I’ll be here when you wake. Dream of galloping Winghummers and singing, purple Unicorns.”
Harry sensed a presence in the house. He kept his breathing steady, feigning sleep and unawareness, even as he slid his pinky along the back of Severus’ hand, checking to see if his husband was also awake. Despite the deep, even breathing coming from his mate, Harry felt the answering twitch from his lover’s hand, alerting him that Severus too was also awake. Harry smiled. She had come. Finally.
In less than a split second Severus was upright, wand pointed at the pale beauty draped in near-translucent silks, who stood at the foot of their bed, hair flowing in shiny, blonde waves about her shoulders.
Baby blue-green eyes locked with coal-black as the sub and would-be-sub assessed one another. Harry, naked from the waist up, silently observed their interaction. For all his prowess and control, ultimately this exchange was out of his hands. Protocol dictated that the primary sub accept the new addition, and nothing Harry could say or do at this point would change the outcome. He had to respect Severus’ right as a husband, a lover, a mate, and a father.
Harry watched with lidded eyes as the nearly nude form of Luna, his “Lunes”, walked slowly towards Severus’ side of the bed. Her face was unreadable, but her eyes had not flickered from the intense connection that had formed between she and Severus since her arrival in their bedroom. She was perfect, Harry thought. Every inch of her was smooth as cream and just as sweet. He could see the sensual dip in her spine beneath the gauzy, peach-colored gown she wore, and just make out the blurry ink of her dragonfly tattoo on her hip as she sauntered ever closer to Severus. What he wouldn’t give to flick his tongue across the insect design coloring otherwise blemish-free, creamy skin.
The elder wizard surveyed the younger blonde through slit eyes, his face inscrutable as always when something of great import and possible, great tension confronted him. Their eyes continued their unbroken stares, yet Luna’s gaze softened mere moments before she reached Severus.
The dark haired men each watched as the blonde lowered gracefully to her knees before tossing her hair behind her and baring her unadorned neck. Severus could almost feel the thumping of Harry’s heart increase as he eyed the delicate flesh on offer. It was the ultimate sign of deference, but it was not offered to Harry, who would be her dominant. It was offered to Severus.
To say he was surprised that Luna had taken the extra step of learning the proper protocol for entering an Amoral triad or harem was an understatement. Severus knew that the lithe female wanted Harry and he also knew that Harry wanted her. Never in all the times he had imagined the scenarios by which Luna would join them had the current tableau entered his mind. He was pleased.
At this point Harry’s breath was coming out in steady, deep pants of air, and Severus could smell the increased aroma of Harry’s pheromone permeate the air within the bedroom. Yet his eyes would not, could not be torn from the image before him of a resigned, yet willing Luna, utterly passive and pliant. Her large blue-green eyes looked at him steadily, yet he could see the faint flicker of uncertainty and need hiding there, just beyond the obvious. It was a portal to her heart, her desire, laid bare before him, for his scrutiny and edification.
Severus lowered his wand, settling it back beneath his pillow, before breaking their eye contact as he turned to look at Harry. Despite the obvious lust that rolled in spates off Harry, Severus could tell by Harry’s posture that he too was a little taken aback by the lengths to which Luna had gone to fully understand just what joining them meant. Severus smoothed his hand along the sheet until it reached one of Harry’s, which was idly tracing patterns atop the mattress. The touch elicited as much electricity and passion as it always did between them, and Severus was glad to note that it was his touch that could bring Harry back to the matter at hand in an instant.
The two men, longtime lovers, took a moment to silently communicate, their fingertips playing against one another’s, soft but firm. Harry gazed into his lover’s eyes, awed by the peace he found there. Severus’ eyes had long since lost the constant crease and bunching of stress and worry, but at this moment the man almost seemed young again. Harry lifted a hand to stroke through gray streaked hair, a gently tug when he reached the end made Severus hum softly and roll his neck towards him like a big cat.
Harry leaned over a bit and rested his forehead against Severus’, basking in a quiet moment of contemplation, a moment to remember, for they both knew it was the last moment that their relationship—hell, their lives— would be unchanged.
Severus closed his eyes as Harry leaned in even closer to brush his nose against Severus’ more prodigious one, nuzzling him gently and stroking his back. When they broke apart an eternity could have passed, but it was more like three or four minutes. Severus blinked once at Harry before offering his lover, his dom, a small smirk before turning his attention back to the blonde still kneeling next to his side of the bed, only now her face was downcast, shielded by her impossibly long hair as though in an effort to give the two men privacy in their tender moment.
Severus reached out with finger to her chin, pushing her face upward to meet his eyes. She looked up obediently, her large eyes a bit watery as her bottom lip trembled slightly. It was a faint tremor, one Severus knew Luna was trying to still, yet he saw it all the same. It was owed to her emotional strength that the blonde didn’t breakdown then and there. The silence was becoming overwhelming. Harry had not said a word, nor had Severus, and all Luna could think was that the offer had expired. She was no longer needed, nor desired. She was an interloper, a leech on someone else’s happy life; a hanger-on with nothing to offer except imaginative children’s stories and barely passable pudding recipes.
Then, Severus kissed her.
