Chapter 5
Draco Finds Out
Draco Malfoy sat behind the dark cherry wood desk in his study perusing the evening copy of The Daily Prophet. In it was the day's daily business report and he was fanatical about keeping an eye on his investments. Today had certainly been a good day for his vaults at Gringott's. Tomorrow looked just as promising.
Closing the paper, he stood and removed his outer robes, leaving him in a three-piece suit designed by a witch but modeled after muggle designs. The navy suit was fitted, showing off the lean, fit figure he honed playing Quidditch in a local wizard's league.
Draco placed the outer robes on the back of the chair, then walked over to the sidebar to pour himself a glass of brandy. His parents would be arriving in short order for dinner and he was sure Lucius would want to once again discuss the merits of marrying one of Rosco St. Claire's daughters. The idea of marrying any of those vapid witches was enough to make him want to run as far and as fast as he could. Thank Merlin he was his own man, and his parents had ceased trying to arrange a marriage for him years ago. Draco took a sip of the perfectly aged brandy and went to sit behind his desk again. He had a few owls to send out before he got down to the business of planning the next seduction of the very delectable Hermione Granger.
Picking up his quill, Draco began to write but was interrupted when a house-elf popped into the room.
"Forgive me, Master Draco," said the short, wizened old elf, wearing a tea cozy on its head and hand towel around his waist.
"Yes, Kirby, what is it?" Draco glanced at the elf who had been with his family for longer than he or his parents could recall.
"Master Zabini, Master Flint, and Mistress Granger is here. I is putting them in the blue drawing room to wait for you."
"Very well, Kirby. Have a tea tray sent in, please." With a low bow the elf popped back out of the room to carry out his master's bidding.
Well, well, thought Draco, the temptress has arrived.
He got up and walked around the desk making his way out of the study and down the hall to the blue drawing room. Flint was standing by the window, Granger was seated on the brocade settee that was situated at a right angle to the giant hearth and Zabini paced in front of his desk.
"This is unexpected," he stated walking in the room. All three pairs of eyes turned to him. "What could bring my two best mates and a gorgeous witch to my home at this hour?" He turned a charming smile Hermione's way and winked at her. "Miss me already, darling?"
Hermione huffed and crossed her arms over her chest, unaware that it tightened her robes in that area. Draco almost salivated as he rememberd the feel of those fleshy globes in his hands.
"My eyes are up here, Malfoy." She gestured to her eyes as she got up from the couch and walked over to stand in front of him.
"What's the deal, then? Why are you harassing me?" Hermione glared up at the handsome wizard on front of her.
Flint and Zabini came to stand behind her and Draco could see the confused looks they were wearing.
"Cara, surely you don't think Malfoy is responsible, do you?" Blaise questioned her.
"I think that I deserve some answers, and I think he may have them."
"Care to tell me what it is I have supposedly done?" Draco raised an eyebrow at Hermione which only made her glare more fiercely at him. Damn, she was beautiful all riled up, he thought.
"You know damn well what you've done."
"Well, sweetheart, where you are concerned all I have done is you. Twice by my count. And you enjoyed both times," he leaned closer so that they were practically nose to nose, "thoroughly."
Hermione stomped her foot in frustration and stalked away from him. She paced the room like a caged lion. Marcus spoke up first.
"Can't you two give it a rest once in a while? Mione, do you really believe Malfoy has something to do with the letters you're getting?"
"No," she sighed, "but it would be easier to deal with if it was him." She was currently leaning back against the front of the credenza, legs crossed and her pointed heels extending her already long legs. He needed to feel them wrapped around him again as she writhed beneath....
"Hold on, what letters are you talking about? I've not sent any letters to you." Draco's eyes flicked from face to face. "Hermione, what is going on?"
She nodded towards Blaise. "Show him the letters."
Blaise reached into his robes and withdrew two pieces of parchment. He handed them over to Draco and watched as the wizard's face became serious. Had anyone else been watching they'd have missed the glint of possessive anger that had flashed in his eyes when he stole a quick glance at Hermione. Blaise didn't miss it, and he found the response very, very telling of Malfoy's feelings where the witch was concerned.
Draco rolled up the parchment and tucked it into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. "Flint, Zabini, I appreciate you both escorting Granger here so she could fill me in on this problem. I would appreciate if you gave us some privacy to finish this conversation on our own." His voice was soft, but there was steel behind it, letting the two other wizards in the room know that this was not something they should argue about with him. Nodding, they murmured their goodbyes to Hermione and headed out towards the Floo.
He counted to ten, heard the Floo connection go off and turned his gaze to the woman who was still leaning against the credenza. He let his eyes roam freely over her lush curves and then back up to her face. She was still glaring at him.
"Care to enlighten me about why you wouldn't notify Potter and Weasley about this situation, my dear?" His voice was smooth like the finest whiskey.
"No, I'd rather not enlighten you about anything," she replied. Hermione had no idea why she was being so difficult but she believed this was her problem and she would be the one to find a way to fix it.
"That's too bad. You will explain that to me and then you will answer my questions," he still spoke softly as he began to walk towards her.
Hermione felt herself go flush. The commanding tone of his voice caused her stomach to clench. Bastard turned her on, even when he wasn't trying. She resolved not to lose her head and keep matters strictly business. She would explain what she knew about the letters, which was not much at all, and then she would leave, before her panties wound up around her ankles again.
Draco enjoyed the color that bloomed on Hermione's face. The fact that it was his tone of voice that seemed to cause it was information he filed away for use at a later date. He stopped when he stood directly in front of her. Reaching out he ran a finger along the neckline of her robes.
Hermione desperately tried to keep still under the simple, fleeting touch of his finger along her clothing. It wasn't easy but she managed to appear at ease. She was grateful her robes covered the evidence of her growing desire. Her nipples were tight and aching to feel his touch again.
He placed a hand under her chin and lifted her face so that their eyes met. Draco could swear there was a spark in them from his nearness. "Now answer me, love. Why would you hide the fact that you have a stalker from Potty and Weasel?"
"Honestly, Draco," Hermione pulled her chin out of his grasp and slid past him. His nearness would be her undoing and she wasn't about to give him that power over her. "Their names are Potter and Weasley! Must you always resort to calling them childish things." She knew she was evading the question as she wandered restlessly about the room.
"Hermione." His silky voice drifted over her and she stopped in front of a painting of dragons flying over a castle. It was enchanted so the dragons moved as whisps of smoke flew out their nostrils. Her back was to Draco when she finally answered.
"I don't want to be a burden to them. So much time has already passed and we've taken different roads in our lives. Harry is happy with Ginny and their growing family. The same with Ron and Lavender. I am perfectly capable of dealing with this issue on my own."
Watching the dragons move about reminded Hermione of fourth year and Tri-Wizard Tournament. Harry had had to accio his broom when the dragon snapped the chain it was tethered to and chased him all over the grounds of Hogwarts. Other memories assailed her, and she longed for those days again when it was Harry, Ron, and herself against the world. She missed her friends, even as she was happy their lives had turned out so well. Lost in her musings, Hermione didn't hear Draco come up behind her. Nor did she realize the bittersweet smile that was on her face.
Draco heard what Hermione hadn't said. It was plain to see that she missed those gits, if the hurt expression on her face was anything to go by. He placed his hands on her upper arms and leaned down so that his lips brushed her ear as he spoke.
"You're not alone, Hermione, you have me, Flint and Zabini. Slytherins, for all our cunning ways, never leave anyone behind." He straightened up even as she stiffened under his touch. His words went straight to her heart and caused her eyes to tear up. She had no idea why she was getting so emotional. Quickly she blinked back the tears and stepped away from his touch.
"I was thinking we could get Seamus Finnegan's private security team to help out. You need someone with you at all times," she said. Doing her best to remain poised and unaffected by his words and his touch.
"Actually, Granger, I am perfectly capable of watching my own back. Death Eater's son, remember?" He grinned at her in an attempt to lighten the mood and slid his hands into the pockets of his suit trousers. He knew his attempt worked when she rolled her eyes at him.
"Be serious, Malfoy."
"I am being serious, Granger. However, we can call in Finnegan and his crew because until this bastard is caught I don't want you going anywhere by yourself. I am sure Flint and Zabini will agree to that."
"I helped bring down the greatest threat to the wizarding world while I was still in school. I hardly think I need a bodygaurd, I can handle myself." She crossed her arms, daring him to disagree.
The grin slid off of Draco's face. Was she serious?
"Be realistic. This arsehole has spied on us, may have watched us in our intimate moments, Hermione! Why aren't you afraid? Where is your head at, witch, that you can't see the danger this presents to you?" Draco's voice became more forceful as he spoke. She seemed so calm, so under control all the time. It was a wonder she had let herself go so completely the two times she was in his arms.
"I am perfectly capable of defending myself should the need arise, Draco. I am a very self-sufficient witch." She lifted her chin defiantly and Draco cursed under his breath as he felt himself tumble head over heels for the beautiful, intelligent, stubborn, determined, obstinate, lovely, spirited witch currently standing in his drawing room. Like hell he was going to tell her that though. For now he needed to convince her that she couldn't handle this problem alone.
"Damn it, witch! I will not have you traipsing about all of bloody Britain while there is some deranged wizard on the loose who wants to off me and make you his!" In his fury Draco made a grab for the woman who had moved to stand next to him, Giving her no warning he slammed his lips down on top of hers.
