CHAPTER 4
Hermione reread the letter and confirmed it indeed said that he “loved the part where you apparated off the stage. ” The letter slipped out her hands and fell to the floor.
A wizard was there.
He saw me perform magic.
He won’t tell anyone as long as he gets to watch my next performance.
She had no doubt in her mind that the letter held an unwritten threat. She had a gut feeling that if she didn’t show up and perform next week the Ministry would be informed. Hermione knew it was wrong to perform magic in front of muggles, but that’s what had turned her okay dances to fabulous. She never went overly fancy with her magic or used it maliciously. Bloody hell, she had only begun incorporating it into her dances a few months ago. Besides, it was never really obvious magic.
“Oh, Merlin, what I am to do? I can’t just stop dancing. I don’t have enough saved up yet!” She had stood up from her chair and began pacing her living room. Absent mindedly she stepped on Crookshanks’ tail which caused him to wail out in pain. “I’m sorry, baby. Come here,” she reached down to comfort him. Crookshanks reached around and scratched her hand. “Ow, you little prat! Ok. Fine. Be that way. See if I care. ” Hermione glared from her bleeding hand to the cat. He turned around and left the room in a tizzy. Hermione was sure it was going to take a few days for him to forgive her.
She walked to her bathroom and cleaned off the blood and healed her minor wound. Returning to her previous predicament, her mind started spinning. What was a wizard doing at that place any way? I made sure the area wasn’t near any wizarding areas. She knew she had been thorough in her research.
Hermione wracked her brain trying to figure out what she should do. In classic Hermione fashion she pulled out quill and parchment and began listing the pros and cons. After two hours agonizing over books she had pulled from her small private library she learned that because of the type of spells she was using they would most likely grant her a warning. The muggles that watched her suspected nothing and she could also prove to the Ministry that the same effects could have been done with a little muggle ingenuity. She was safe but she still wasn’t a hundred percent comfortable.
What if, because it’s me, they tell me I should have known better and they throw the book at me! “What am I going to do?” she berated herself. I have to show up there next week. “But what will I do?” Maybe I won’t perform any magic on the stage, her mind chimed in. “Yes. Of course! Hermione, you’re brilliant!” she shouted out. Then the damn wizard won’t have anything to use on me. Maybe he’ll decide it’s not worth it and not return. Yes that’s what I’ll do. “I gotta make it a good dance. Prove I don’t need to use magic to make a show spectacular. I’ve gotta find something they have never seen before,” she said aloud to no one in particular. Especially since her only audience had run off into her closet.
Hermione sat down on her couch again and thought of different dances she had seen. None looked like something that would wow the crowd though. Again she agonized over her books and after reading an excerpt about the origins of dance, her face lit up. “Hmm… no one said I couldn’t use magic before the performance. ” With a gleam in her eye Hermione giggled at her genius. Her worries put aside, she settled herself into bed and reviewed her exam notes until sleep claimed her.

Draco arrived at the club a little before ten. He reluctantly took a seat near the bar at the back of the club, gazing longingly at an empty seat situated front and center of the stage. Before settling himself, Angela was by his side.
“Another scotch, sir?” she asked him leaning over to give him another look at her cleavage.
“Of course,” he answered not looking away. Hey, if she is willing to show it to me, I’m not going to complain. Feeling a little more social than his last visit and dying to find out more about the dancer he asked “How long has this ‘Little Wicked Witch’ been performing here?”
As if she had been expecting it, Angela looked down at him and replied, “Oh, I’d say it’s been a little over year now. She has gotten really good. You should’ve seen her when she started,” she chuckled softly. “She wasn’t a headliner then, but she was a quick study and sure enough she stole the show. I have a feeling she isn’t going to stay in this business for too long though. ”
“Really? Why do you say that?” Draco asked a little worried.
“Well, she just doesn’t seem like the type that would continue dancing. Not because she isn’t good at it, but because she will move on to bigger better things. ” She tapped her left temple with her index finger. “She's really smart. Sometimes I don’t understand what she is going on about. She does this because she needs to, not because she wants to. ”
Draco listened intently. Hmm, so she isn’t just another ditzy dancer. That’s a nice change.
“Let me go ahead and get your drink before the show starts, okay?”
He nodded his head at her but before she got too far away he asked, “Bring me some pen and paper?”
“Sure thing, boss” she joked and wandered off towards to bar to get his drink.
When she returned she looked at him and again asked “I told you I don’t mind sharing. Why don’t you sit in the front?”
“No, I’ll just stay here. You bring the pen and paper?”
She placed it beside his drink and walked off in search of her other customers.
No, he definitely couldn’t sit in the front. Not if the dancer really was a witch, and of that he was pretty certain. All wizarding families knew the Malfoys. Perhaps didn’t necessarily know them personally but at least knew of them. No he would not risk being seen just yet. He knew from experience that she would only be able to see those that were near the stage because of the spotlight that was on her at all times. It made it bloody hard to see anything far in the distance. He had made sure to pick a secluded dark corner by the bar where he would be able to watch her and she would not be able to see him.
He watched as more and more men entered, all shuffling their way to seats close to the stage. Looking around he noticed that all the doors to the ‘private’ dance rooms were open. Hmm, they probably don’t want to miss the headliner he thought to himself. He sure as hell didn't.
He wanted to meet this witch but was at a loss at how exactly to do it. He had previously thought about writing to her every week until she caved in and accepted a dinner date but that could take forever. Perhaps he could find a way to start an owling conversation. But the owl would have to be told his name to find him. Well, if this Little Wicked Witch was as smart as Angela had stated then maybe she could come up with something. That sounds good. I’ll ask her if she knows of a way for the two of us to communicate with out revealing ourselves to each other. That will give me a little insight into how smart she really is Draco thought to himself.
Looking at the page before him he realized that he normally let his looks and charms do all the work for him, but now he actually had to think about what to say to someone who had brains. Not to mention was damn sexy. On top of that, she also had no idea that he was a Malfoy. That could work to his advantage though. He didn’t want her to either run off or at him because of his Malfoy name. Yes, I’ll keep my identity out of the picture for now. This may be a little harder than I thought. He gazed back at the blank piece of paper wondering what to write, but failing that, he lost his concentration to the pen he was twirling in his fingers. It wasn’t one of the nicest but it did the job. He had grown fond of pens and their versatility since Blaise had introduced him to them when they had been out traveling Europe.
He cooled the scotch as he had done previously and looked around, his mind wandering back to the last few years. As long as Draco could remember, Blaise Zabini had always been his friend. So when his Mum had made the suggestion that they get away from England for a while to forget about the war, he decided to ask his friend to join him. They had done some crazy things during their travels and he had never felt more alive. To Draco’s surprise Blaise had opened up causing him to come to the conclusion that his friend was not like most purebloods as he had originally thought. He didn’t mind being around half-bloods, muggle-borns and muggles. He had never displayed this affinity when in school in fear of retribution from his family and fellow Slytherins. Not to mention Lord Voldemort.
Draco thought he sounded like Arthur Weasley when he started telling him about different muggle items, but Draco still accepted his friend and told him so. He was the one person who had stayed a true friend to him before, during, and after the war. Throughout their travels Blaise talked to him about the differences between muggles and wizards. Slowly Draco came around and had agreed to visit some muggle cities and towns to experience the nightlife. There were times though that Draco instinctively reacted as he had been taught and Blaise had been there to bail him out of some pretty embarrassing situations.
For his friend’s birthday, Draco decided to buy him something different. Blaise had explained the pen concept to him earlier in their travels and even carried around a few in his pocket. Draco just couldn’t see them like Blaise did and he continued to use his quill and inkwell. Deciding to do something that was completely foreign to him, he went to a muggle shop (by himself) and purchased a few nice pens for Blaise, and deciding to see what all the fuss was about he also bought himself one too. He quickly became accustomed to it and realized why Blaise liked to use them so much. Definitely less messy than a quill and inkwell. He still used the familiar quill and inkwell at home or in the presence of other wizards, but out and about traveling like he had been doing with Blaise he couldn’t beat a pen. Plus, if he was out in the muggle world like he was now he couldn’t very well pull out a quill to sign something. He laughed imagining the look on people’s faces. Excuse me sir, but what do you think your doing?
Mark’s disembodied voice awoke him from his fantasy. “Welcome gentleman to…” blah, blah, blah! Come on already. Shut your trap and bugger off. Patience was definitely not one of Draco’s virtues.

Dreamweaver – Thank you very much for your reviews. They helped me plan out more of the story. Someone can change a lot in five years. I will put in a backwards version of what my hubby has been through over the last three years into a few chapters. I hope this explained a little about Draco and his affiliation with muggles and why he teetering on that fine line between like and hate. Cant really use “love” yet.
DracoLover69 –I have a few twists and turns to throw in before they do. I hope you enjoy the ride.
Thank you everyone for reviewing! Please review some more. They make me HAPPY!
