Chap. 4: The Pensieve, Part I.
"Now that we've had our little chat", Lucius remarked, "it's time to use Severus' Pensieve for the rest of our talk".
"Where do you think it’s at"? Draco asked.
"Knowing Severus, he would have had it in a room where nobody could spy on him", Lucius explained, “and that is where we will begin to look”.
"His old office, in the potions classroom…” Harry stated, and at everyone's look, he explained. "That's where he used to have it, back when we had our occlumency lessons in fifth year".
"Occlumency lessons", Draco questioned, "but wait just a minute, you were supposed to be having remedial potions, and you were having occlumency lessons all along"?
"Well, I wouldn't call them lessons, and I won't speak ill of the dead, so let's just leave it at that, shall we"? Harry deadpanned. "Needless to say, they didn't work, and I just ended up making Sna…Severus hate me over something I did". At this, Harry hung his head. "But, I think he would have most likely moved the Pensieve here, or I would guess he did anyhow".
"No, Mr. Potter, he would have used the schools, which is still in the Headmaster's office. I think you are correct in assuming that it is in the dungeons, and thus, away from prying eyes, and ears". Lucius explained. "I would think that it is probably, still, in his old private quarters".
"Oh shite"! Harry exclaimed. "I left those other memories, you know, the ones that Severus gave me, in the Headmaster's Pensieve! We'll have to collect those, there's no way around it"!
"All right, take that door, there", Lucius pointed, "and, it will lead you to the Headmaster's office. Take the stairs up, and you will come out on the landing that the revolving stairs meet. You know how to do the rest, so just re-bottle them, and then come straight back. Also, Mr. Potter, what ever you do, do not answer any questions that are directed at you from the portraits, or anyone else for that matter".
At Lucius' direction, Harry quickly made his way to the Headmaster's office, and made to collect Severus' memories, which he had used to win the war.
~~~~~~~~
"Dad, Lucius Malfoy is up to something, I just know it, and the slimy shite is going to get away with it. I just have a bad feeling about all of it"! Ron exclaimed. He couldn’t believe that everything was going completely opposite to what he thought it would.
"Oh, no doubt he is up to something, as we have not seen him, nor his family, and I might add Harry, for some time. I would say that he is filling Harry's head with everything he wants him to know about, by now, anyhow". Arthur explained.
"Yea, filling it with a bunch of shite"! Ron scowled, and his hatred was quickly becoming apparent to anyone who would look.
"Yes, Ron, something like that”. Arthur murmured, “Now, let's go find your mother, and see about the arrangements that need to be made for Fred". At this, Arthur somberly steered Ron out of the Gryffindor common room.
~~~~~~~~
Harry had quickly collected the memories that were in the Headmaster’s office and when he stepped back inside the Severus' quarters, he noticed that somebody new was standing in the sitting room. "Um, Mr. Malfoy"?
"Ah, Harry, let me introduce you to Mr. Thomas McGuire, Chairman, and Supreme Mugwump, of the International Confederation of Wizards". Lucius explained. "Mr. Chairman, if it pleases, let me introduce you to Mr. Harry Potter".
Chairman McGuire readily took Harry's hand, and gave it a vigorous shake. "I have been looking forward to meeting you, Mr. Potter, and I must say, you look so much like your dear father once did".
"Uh, er, thanks Mr. McGuire. Yea, everyone always says that, but then they say I have my mum's eyes". Harry replied, with a sheepish smile.
"Yes, that you do Mr. Potter, that you do". McGuire stated. "Now, Lucius, I have here the dual-citizenry papers, from Switzerland, that was in your vault. All you need are these, and your card, and that should put a stop to anyone wanting to apprehend you on any so-called charges, so be it what they are".
"How will that help, if I may ask"? Hermione piped up.
"Why, diplomatic immunity, of course, my dear lady. Since Lucius was our spy against Voldemort, and also has a citizenship in Switzerland, he has immunity from any prosecution here in Britain. It is the same as if he were an Ambassador, etc, do you understand"? Chairman McGuire explained.
"Yes, now I do. The muggle governments have the same thing". Hermione chirped. However, on the inside, she was kicking her self over not remembering this.
"Yes, now if one of the guards would be so kind as to retrieve our new Minister Pro Tem, we can then get this all taken care of today, before I have to return to the London office". McGuire said, and watched as one of the inner guards gave a short bow, and left to collect Kingsley Shacklebolt.
~~~~~~~~
"Minerva, I have placed the Death Eater's corpses in the dungeons, or that is until they can be disposed of". Kingsley explained, and gave a slight sneer at the thought of even having to deal with them.
Minerva McGonagall noticed this, and even though she agreed to move them, she did not agree with them being 'disposed' of, as he so coldly put it. As a matter of fact, she remembered teaching some of them as her students in the past. "What do you mean by 'disposed of' minister"?
"Oh, well, they'll most likely be incinerated, and their ashes disposed of. Surely, you don't care what happens with them now"? Kingsley asked.
"Well, quite frankly, I do minister"! Minerva espoused. "I remember some of them when they were just students, and way before they were led astray. Also, they have families that are still living, and they would want to bury their dead, as they see fit. It’s the only right thing to do".
"Well, the ministry will not pay for it, and that I can guarantee you, Headmistress. Plus, some of their families may now be on the run, themselves, and may not step up to claim the bodies. If they don't, those bodies will have to be dealt with". Kingsley stated, and started to walk off. He couldn't believe what he was hearing from the new Headmistress.
"Kingsley Shacklebolt, will you please come with me"? Asked the security guard that was sent by Chairman McGuire.
"Just where am I supposed to go to, because I do not have time for the ICW's games right now"? Kingsley growled. This was beginning to get absolutely ridiculous.
"Oh, but I assure you, you will have time for this, Minister Pro Tem, for as you may not be aware, and as of now, the ICW is actually controlling things, not the British Ministry of Magic. That is why we were called, and your country has been occupied since our arrival. Now Minister Shacklebolt, you will come with me". The guard coldly explained.
"WHAT! Now you listen here...." Kingsley pointed his finger at the guard, but was quickly cut off.
"Minister, the Chairman, and Supreme Mugwump, of the International Confederation of Wizards, Mr. McGuire, has demanded your presence, and you will follow me, now, please"! The guard said again, while taking a step forward.
"Kingsley, for Merlin's sake, you have to go with him! You can not go against the ICW, or you could lose your position that we just granted to you"! McGonagall hissed under her breath, and she began to wonder whether it might have been a mistake to make the Head Auror the new Minister.
"All right, all right, but he had better be quick about it"! Kingsley protested, but, in the end, he did follow the guard out of the great Hall.
~~~~~~~~
"How long has your family had a citizenship with Switzerland, Narcissa"? Hermione asked.
"Well, the Blacks do not, but the Malfoy's have had one there since the Swiss Confederation; somewhere around the sixteenth century, if I recall. We have a château there, in the Alps, that we use to vacation at during the winter". Narcissa explained, and turned quickly, when she heard the door swing open, almost slamming into the wall.
"Ah, I see you have found our dear new Minister Pro Tem! Good, good, now you two may go wait outside, and stay with the other two guards for the time being. Now, Kingsley, what a pleasure"! Chairman McGuire finished, and held out his hand towards the new minister.
"I want to know what the Hell is going on around here"? Kingsley growled out, and refused to shake Mr. McGuire's hand. Everyone in the room was shocked at Kingsley's sudden snobbery.
"Show him Lucius". The Chairman stated, with a glare, aimed at the new minister, and to which he quickly snatched his hand back.
Lucius stepped forward, handing the documents, along with his ICW diplomat card, to Shacklebolt, and took a step back, but now with a smirk firmly planted upon his face.
"What's this"? Kingsley remarked, as he quickly looked over the documents. "This could mean anything, and I do not have time to read them over now"!
"Well, you see minister pro tem, it DOES mean something. It means that Lucius Malfoy, and his family, are immune to any, and all, prosecution by the British Ministry of Magic". McGuire explained, with a hint of steel in his voice. After all, he did not like being snubbed.
"WHAT"! Kingsley roared, as he looked at McGuire.
"Well, Minister, I was sure that Mr. Potter had explained to you that Lucius Malfoy was in our employee, as our agent, and spy, against the dark wizard known as Voldemort"? McGuire asked, but quickly forged on, not allowing Shacklebolt to answer. "If not, let me explain to you what this means. Since the ICW is headquartered in Switzerland, and since that Mr. Malfoy also enjoys a citizenship there, he is in fact, considered a diplomat. By your magical constitution, and by several treaties signed with us, by your ministry, which gives the ministry a voting seat on the confederation, this makes Mr. Malfoy, and his family, diplomatically immune to the laws of Britain. Now, does this explain it enough"?
"And, what will happen if we refuse this"? Kingsley narrowed his eyes at the Chairman.
"Well, these are magically binding treaties, or contracts, Minister, and if broken, your ministry will no longer stand, and it will be summarily dismantled. It will then fall back to the Wise Council, as it originally was, and which will be reconvened. Also, you will have thirty countries wizarding forces arriving here within minutes, and especially a pissed of bunch of Yank's! Now, is that what you want minister, to be forcefully removed from your office, for breaking international law"? McGuire asked, looking down at his fingernails, as if it really didn't concern him at all.
Kingsley glared at the Chairman for a few minutes before he turned to face Lucius. "Malfoy, you may have won this round, but I will be keeping an eye on you. One slip up, Malfoy, and I will see you back in Azkaban"!
"Ah, but minister, you can't, or was you not listening"? Lucius grinned. "I am still their employee, and still have my offices at the Ministry of Magic. I will continue to be the ICW's diplomat, and will be at the ministry every day, along with taking my seat back on the Wizengamot. I will also return to my post on the Hogwarts board of Governors, and will still do my duty. Now, Minister Pro Tem, what you must ask yourself is this. What will Lucius Malfoy do, over being illegally incarcerated, in Azkaban, for all those months? Especially, after being thrown in prison without a trial? Habeas Corpus does come to mind, does it not, and just maybe, a law suit"? Lucius crowed.
"It'll be a cold day in hell Malfoy"! Kingsley shouted, and to all in the room, his eyes looked as they may bulge completely out of his head.
"Minister pro tem, a word about Azkaban, if I may, as I almost forgot". McGuire said, and Kingsley whirled back around.
"What about Azkaban"? Kingsley seethed.
"At this very moment, Minister, the prisoners are being removed to another, shall we say, cleaner facility, and the old prison is being demolished". McGuire replied.
"WHAT! You can't do that"! Kingsley roared.
"Oh, but you see, we can. Those prisoners have human rights that are granted to them under the third wizarding convention, and that facility did not pass the least inspection. The British crown has given us an older, but vacant, prison in Wales, and the prisoners have been transported there. It is being sanitized, and new bedding, along with essentials, are being installed". McGuire explained. "From now on, the ICW will be doing spot inspections of the new facility to check on the prisoners welfare, and the wards that we will erect. If we find that any violations occur, it will be upon your head, Minister Pro Tem! Now, do I make myself completely, and perfectly, clear"?
Kingsley stared at the man for several more minutes. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. It was like he didn't have one drop of power in his new ministry, and he couldn't get his mind to wrap around it. Finally, he shook himself out of his daze enough to for a retort.
"I expect to be taken to this new prison immediately! I want to see what is happening now, and no later"! Kingsley growled out. “I can’t believe you could do this under our very noses”!
"Yes, yes, just ask one of the guards outside to escort you, if you will. Now, I think that we have all finished here, and I must be back off to London, you know, work to be done, and all that rot. So, Lucius, Mr. Potter, it's been a pleasure". Chairman McGuire said, and began to lead a seething Kingsley Shacklebolt from the room.
Once the door shut, Draco scratched his head, and looked around the room. "You know, he'll never make it as a minister if he does not get his temper under control, and do something about those atrocious manners"!
Everyone stared at Draco for a moment, and then burst out laughing.
~~~~~~~~
"Did you hear that, Dad, they talk like all those Death Eater's have some sort of rights now"! Ron exclaimed. “I’ve never heard such utter bullshite in my entire life, and just who in the bloody hell are all these soldiers, and what bloody business is it of theirs anyhow”?
"Well, just who the hell are you"? A tall ICW security soldier asked, cutting off Arthur before he could speak.
Ron quickly looked over at the soldier, and saw an American flag sewn on his sleeve. "If you must know, I'm Ronald Weasley, you bloody fuckin' Yank! What bloody fuckin’ business is it of yours”?
WHAM!
Next, Ron was looking up from the floor, where he had landed on his arse, at the soldier standing over him, with his fists still at the ready. Ron, then fingered his nose, and sure enough, it was broken, and blood poured from both nostrils.
"Listen here boy, you open your sorry mouth again, and I'll fuck you up like a can of worms"! The American soldier bellowed with a southern drawl. "It's mouthy assed moron's like you that created this mess to start with, and now we're stuck having to clean up all this shit, over the likes of you. So, you best keep that gaping maw of yours shut, boy, and get on with your business, or that is, if you know what's good for you"!
When Ron started to retort, his father quickly shook his head, and offered Ron a hand up. Ron then noticed that there were several wands aimed at him, so he figured he had better haul arse in order to save what little pride he had left. Once he was helped to his feet, Arthur used his wand to fix his nose, which, in turn, made the redhead yelp, and they quickly made to leave.
When Arthur and Ron walked back out of the Great Hall, they overheard Kingsley Shacklebolt, talking to a guard, which was walking beside him towards the front entrance. What they had heard made them both gawk in disbelief.
"They can't be bloody serious"! Ron exclaimed. "Give those filthy Slytherins a better place to stay than Azkaban! What the Hell is happening here; I thought they would just kill them all off, and be done with it! What about payback, and what about the compensation we were promised, and by Dumbledore no less"?
"Something's up Ron, and it has Lucius Malfoy written all over it". Arthur explained. "I think we need to find somebody that's in the know, and see what has happened, before we get carried away, and get ourselves in over our head".
"Bloody fuckin' Yanks". Ron muttered, forgetting his mouth, again, and quickly looked behind him to make sure he wasn't overheard. After all, he didn’t want to take another lick to the nose, like the one he had just been on the receiving end of, again, or anytime soon, to be honest!
~~~~~~~~
"All right Harry, this is the first memory that I want you to see. It's right after I graduated, and I was to be married within a few months after this". Lucius explained, as he poured the memory into Severus' Pensieve, which was indeed, still in his dungeon office.
There were no portraits here, and Snape had added several strong wards, which were still in effect, due to the runes that he had carved into the stone wall’s. After Harry had found this out, he took a deep breath, and hesitantly lowered his head into the silvery contents, that were neither liquid nor gas.
~~~~~~~~
"Lucius, my son, I am dying, as I'm sure you’re aware. They can't stop the progression, son, and the Healers have tried everything. I leave you with the estate, and when you get married, you will control it all. However, I have this one request, which I ask of you. Since Edward is getting old, I want you to seek out Dumbledore for protection. He will be the only one to keep you away from the Dark Lord's clutches. I know that Edward's boy, and Sirius Black, are being protected by him, even though the Dark Lord is still trying to recruit them". Abraxas Malfoy wheezed out. "Will you do this for me son, as I can not stand to lose my only heir"?
"Yes father, of course I will. I knew the Dark Lord was after James and Sirius, but I am not sure of what Dumbledore will want in return, if he is to provide this help". A young Lucius Malfoy explained.
"Ah yes, well of course he will try to gain your services, that is Albus’ nature. If you do this, though, it will mark you for death by the Dark Lord, so steer clear of any conversations about that. Just ask for help, and see what happens. Hopefully, he will allow you to stay neutral in all this". Abraxas explained.
"Yes, father, I will do as you ask, as always". Lucius said, and the memory began to fade.
~~~~~~~~
"Was that when you father was dying of Dragon Pox, Mr. Malfoy"? Harry asked, when he came up from the Pensieve.
"Yes, Harry, it was, and that disease was caused by none other than, Arthur Weasley". Lucius commented.
"What"? Harry exclaimed.
"My father had loaned Arthur some money to pay off St. Mungo's for Bill Weasley's birth, as a matter of fact. When father went to their home to collect it, as it was a year past due, Arthur got violent, and shoved my father off the porch, and straight into a huge mud hole in their yard. That mud contained the run-off from a nearby paddock, where hogs were being kept. He picked up the Dragon Pox disease from that, or so the healer's said". Lucius intoned. “That, in turn, led to my fathers untimely death”.
"So, that's what the feud is all over then"? Harry enquired.
"Not quite, as the Weasley’s had been accused of turning their backs on some wizarding families, who were being hunted by muggles, years before. Then, Arthur did that to my father, and he used Dumbledore to beat me out of any reparations for my leg. I had sued the estate of Bilius Weasley, and Dumbledore, being the Chief Warlock, had it thrown out before it could be heard before the Wizengamot". Lucius explained. "That is why everyone looks down upon the Weasley's, Mr. Potter, and not over Arthur's love of all things muggle. You see, in the wizarding world, we consider all debts sacred. If you owe someone, you either pay it off, or make up for it in some other way, such as wizard’s debts, and life debts. After everything had accumulated on the Weasley clan, they were finally considered a traitor to their own people, plus, to manhandle an elder wizard, whom he was indebted to, the way Arthur did, well, it didn't sit right with a good number of people in our world".
"This Edward, that your father spoke of, who was he? He sounded as if he was close to my father and Sirius". Harry wondered.
"Well, I would hope that he was close, as Edward was your grandfather, Harry. Edward Potter, and my father, were very good friends, and both spoke quite often. At the time, I was friends with James, even though I was five years his elder”. Lucius explained, and at Harry’s shocked look, he continued. “Yes, James had friends in all the Hogwarts houses, and not just Gryffindors, the way some would have you to believe. He was a pureblood wizard after all.
"Narcissa was also friends with your mother, because Severus was with her constantly. Your mother was a rather smart witch, if I may say so myself, and I hate to say it, but she was the reason that Severus ended up joining the Death Eaters. Well, because of their falling out, and James ending up dating her. That broke Severus' heart, and he went dark after that, all over revenge. Funny, that same revenge ended up getting the love of his life killed.
"You see, Severus already had a dark nature, mainly over the way he was reared. His father was a drunk, and well, he was fond of beating Severus, and his wife. That made Severus quite introverted, and your mother was his first real true friend. That same nature allowed people like Mulciber Jr. and Avery, to coax him into the dark arts. Especially, the more James and Sirius bullied him about, the darker he became.
"Oh, James had a reason for bullying Severus, well, to put it bluntly, he was jealous of Severus' friendship with your mother from the day they met on the train. Sirius though, did it to be bullying, but called it a pranks to cover up his misdeeds. After all, whatever James did, Sirius did, and was sure to follow. Remus would try to control them, somewhat, and that sorry, two-faced, excuse of a wizard, Pettigrew, was there to laugh and egg them on.
“Remus did what he could, but he was always afraid to lose James and Sirius’ friendship, because he was dependent on them, what with his condition and all.
"Anyhow, enough of this talk, as I have the next memory for you to view". Lucius stated, as he handed Harry another phial. "This one occurred around a year later, and my father had been dead for almost eleven months at the time".
Harry poured the shining memory into the Pensieve, and proceeded to place his face into the bowl. Once inside the memory, and after getting his bearings, he noticed he was now in the Headmaster's office.
~~~~~~~~
"Come in Lucius, and please have a seat". Dumbledore offered, showing Lucius Malfoy to the chair in front of his desk. "Would you like some tea"? When Lucius declined, he continued on. "Well then, what may I help you with today Mr. Malfoy"?
"My father asked me to come and see you, before he died, and I thought that today would be as good of a day as any. I have some important matters to discuss with you, Headmaster Dumbledore, if you would please here me out". Lucius explained.
"Ah yes, poor Abraxas, and died of Dragon pox at such a young age, so terrible that! So, Lucius, what would you like to ask of me "? Dumbledore enquired, and with what looked to be a smirk, he sat back in his chair to study the blond wizard before him.
Lucius watched the Headmaster for a moment, and he couldn't believe that the man would have the audacity to smirk about his father dying! Well then, he would just have to be shrewd about everything he asked the old man.
"My father wanted me to seek you out, after I became married, and if the Dark Lord did not stop hounding me to join his legions. Father said that you might offer us protection from the man, so I have come to ask, what help might you may be able to provide my wife and I"? Lucius asked.
"Ah, yes, I guess Abraxas would at that. Congratulations, by the way, about your nuptials, and if I remember correctly, you married the young Mrs. Narcissa Black"? Dumbledore jovially enquired, and at Lucius' nod, he continued. "Yes, well, I suppose I could offer you protection, but I do request something in return for my, or should I say, our services to you.
"You see, Lucius, for protection, you would have to join the Order of the Phoenix, and swear a loyalty to our cause. Also, it is required by each member, to donate ten percent of their monthly income, to help pay for the order, and its mission. Now, does this sound like a reasonable request"?
"Ten percent you say"? Lucius asked, and when Dumbledore nodded, "If I may ask, how can a family like the Weasley's afford this, what with them barely scraping by as it is? Or, how about Remus Lupin, as nobody will hire him, and the last I heard, he was living with the Potter's?"
"Well, they do 'scrape by', as you said, but they do also help fund the order. The Potter family, the Longbottoms, and several other families you may know, all help fund it". Dumbledore explained with a shrewd look. "Would this pose a problem for someone as wealthy as yourself, Lucius"?
"Oh, no problem at all, Headmaster, as that amount would only be a drop in the bucket. However, it makes one wonder about what’s not being said, as Edward Potter has stayed neutral all this time, and I also hear that he is getting ill in his old age, and letting James run things. You see, Edward, and my father, both agreed that by joining either side, it would be the same as putting a target on ones own back, so to speak.
"I have a new wife, and I do not want to fight on either side. I just want my wife and myself protected, as she will most likely be with child before long, and by what you are saying, I take it, I would not have to fight, but merely pay a protection fee"?
"Oh no, when you are a member, you will need to serve, no matter the cost. If you are called upon, you may have to fight, or one could become a spy, as I have need for one as I now speak". Dumbledore hinted.
"I see”, Lucius smirked. “Well, Headmaster, let me think this over, and talk to my wife about it. I will then owl you on what I will do, later on this month. Thank you for your time, and I can let myself out". Lucius said, as he stood to shake Dumbledore's hand, and turned to leave the office.
~~~~~~~~
When Harry emerged from the memory, he quietly walked over to stare at a tapestry, which hang on the far wall of the room. He thought about what he had just witnessed, and calmly spoke, without looking at over Lucius.
"I take it, that the offer for help, that Dumbledore offered Draco that night on the Astronomy Tower, was the same type of offer"? Harry enquired.
"Yes, I believe it was, Harry. Draco knew this, and that is the reason he scoffed at it". Lucius explained. “Plus, one must wonder why Dumbledore waited until then to make the offer”.
"You must understand, Harry, that we never wanted any part of this war to start with. That night, on the tower, Draco was between a rock and a hard place. The Dark lord had threatened to murder both me, and his mother. Also, if Draco failed, he would commit the murder in front of him, and then kill him on top of it. Dumbledore knew about all of this, through Severus, after he had spoken with me. This meeting happened after Narcissa made that vow with Severus, and after they had suspected Draco of having a mission.
"I am now quite sure, that if Draco had accepted that offer, both he and I would have been made spies for the Order, and we would have been right back under that things service, with a much larger target on our backs". Lucius said, as he walked over to place a hand on Harry's shoulder.
"Sir, can we finish these memories up a little later today, perhaps after we've eaten, and I've taken a calming draught"? Harry quietly asked.
"Yes Harry, we can do that. Let me collect the memories, and we will go back upstairs to Severus' rooms". Lucius said, as he walked over to the Pensieve, placed the memories into phials, and stored them away in his cloak. Afterwards, they both left the room, and headed out into the dungeon.
