Chapter 4 – Part 1
Draco watched as Hermione crumpled
to the floor. His mind couldn’t quite process what was going on right now. He
could see she was crying, he could hear her gut-wrenching sobs, but his brain
couldn’t understand why she would be so… distraught. What did Hermione Granger
have to be sad over?
“Please
just kill me.” The words rebounded through Draco’s skull as he tried to piece
together everything. Granger wanted to die? And she wanted him to kill her? ‘Because
she thinks you’re a killer, that’s why.’ The little voice in his head reminded
him. Anger flooded his senses. That stupid bloody bitch! Just because he had
almost killed Dumbledore didn’t mean he was a killer! Who did she think she
was? What the fuck kind of game was she trying to play? He was sick and tired
of people blaming him for mistakes he made and even ones he didn’t. And he was
tired of Potter and Co making him feel like the next Voldemort. People could
change, couldn’t they? Draco wanted to change, he just
had to get through this last stupid year. And Granger didn’t seem to want to
make it easy for him. Draco stalked over and yanked her up by her arm, shoving
her into the stone wall.
“What
the fuck Granger? You want me to kill you? You sad, pathetic, piece of trash. You
think big, bad Malfoy will murder you because you asked so nicely? Because he’s
such a fucking pro at it? Fuck you Granger. Despite what you and your little perfect
friends think, I’m not a killer. I have more respect for myself than to go
around offing people. Go find some other poor sap to play your tricks on,
because I’m not having it. I don’t give a shit how many tears you cry.” Draco
snarled in her face. His breathing was labored and harsh, sweat was breaking
out on his forehead and his pulse was racing. He had never felt so angry before.
How dare she accuse him? How dare she label him? She didn’t know him, she didn’t know anything about him or what he’d been
through. ‘But you’re definitely proving her right aren’t
you? Look at you, shaking her, slamming her into the wall. Is that how you
start over? Is that how you convince her you’re not a killer?’ Draco cursed his
inner voice, what did he care what she thought anyway. Draco reigned in his
temper as he slowly backed away from Hermione.
Her face was blank, her eyes
looking as if they were far away. What the fuck was up with her? He would never
admit it, but Granger’s actions were starting to unnerve him now that his anger
had died down. He had never seen her so lost and pained. It hurt him a bit to
look at her. But still, he couldn’t help but wonder what she had to be so upset
over. He didn’t know how to broach the subject with her, nor did her really
feel like he wanted to. Draco looked at her for another moment before he decided
this meeting was over and started toward the door. Her voice stopped him,
“I
just want to die. I don’t see the point in living anymore.” Her voice was soft,
almost whispered, but he heard every word and it went straight to the core of
him. Draco knew that feeling well, hadn’t he just been thinking about that
earlier? He turned around slowly and looked at her, arms crossed over his chest.
She still wasn’t exactly seeing him, her eyes were focused on some distant
point, but he could tell she was aware he was there. She kept talking, “I don’t
know what’s wrong with me. One moment I’m numb and the next I’m feeling so many
emotions I want to scream. Is this what being crazy feels like?” She turned her
head to him, her eyes finally capturing him in their haunted gaze. Draco froze.
What was he supposed to say to her? He didn’t know, and the whole situation was
making him very uncomfortable as it was. Granger was hitting a little too close
to home with some of her feelings. He never thought he would be commiserating
with Hermione Granger, even if it was only in his own head. He needed to get
out of here and quickly.
Draco shrugged at her, “I suppose
you could always go ask someone at St. Mungo’s. Take
notes and compare.” he replied sarcastically.
Hermione just continued to stare at
him, unaffected by his attitude. “That might be something worth pursuing.” She replied
and then paused. Draco hoped it was the end of the conversation, but she
started talking again. “I just wanted some time alone. For myself. But when I
finally got up here, I looked out and it all looked so
peaceful and quiet that I wanted to become part of it. I wanted to jump off the
ledge and just melt into the night.” Hermione paused. “What were you doing up
here Malfoy?”
Draco raised an eyebrow. Maybe the
witch was crazy, she was talking nonsense and Draco had a hard time following
her train of thought. “None of your business Granger.” He muttered. Hermione
just continued to look at him. It was almost as if she wasn’t registering the
fact that she was actually confiding in him and he didn’t want her to. The
silence between them stretched out until Draco couldn’t take it anymore. “Well,
I will leave you to whatever you were doing. Enjoy your little trip into the
unknown Granger. Try not to make too much of a mess when you land, eh?” He
turned once again and headed for the door.
“I
never thought you were a killer you know.” Her words shocked him and he stopped
in his tracks, one hand reaching for the door knob. Malfoy stood frozen, his
back still to her as she continued. “You said before that my friends and I
think you’re a killer, but you’re wrong. I never thought you were. I know you
couldn’t and didn’t kill Dumbledore. You don’t have it in you.”
Draco turned to fix her with a
glare. “So what?” he replied, his blood beginning to boil again. “So you think
I’m a coward? Is that it Granger?” He tightened his hands into fists by his
side, trying to control himself. He refused to lose his temper again and
reminded himself that he didn’t care what she thought, not in the least.
“I
think you’re brave Malfoy. It takes a lot of courage to go against the tide,
especially when people you love might get hurt. I can’t imagine what it must
have been like for you, but I know it was probably difficult. You should be
proud of yourself Draco,” she responded. The sound of his name coming from her
mouth made him feel weird and he shrugged it off, wishing he had never come to
the tower. “I don’t know if I would have had the strength to do what you did.”
Draco felt
a pang of some emotion deep inside himself. Granger was being nice? To him?
Well, he didn’t want her pity. He didn’t want anything to do with her or her
problems. This conversation was over, once and for all. Draco stodd in silence for a minute and then turned towards the
door. ‘No matter what she says, keep walking.’ He told himself as he opened the
door and slipped through it, leaving Granger to do whatever she was going to
do. A brief feeling of guilt welled up inside of him at leaving her there
alone, but he couldn’t stand to be in her presence anymore, especially not
after the things she had said to him. He didn’t understand her angle, telling
him that she didn’t think him a killer. Obviously she had lied, otherwise she
wouldn’t have asked him to kill her, right? Draco was confused and the thoughts
just kept tumbling around his head as he made his way back to the dungeons. A
few minutes later Draco slipped into his bed and pulled the curtains around
him. That Granger was one crazy witch. She was definitely off her rocker. ‘And
yet, she seems to understand you.’ He said to himself. And it was obvious she
was in a lot of pain herself, if her performance on the tower was to be
believed. Draco tossed and turned in his bed trying to find a comfortable
position, his little run in with Granger had left him feeling unnerved but
relieved. He suddenly realized that he wasn’t alone anymore, he was not the
only one with problems and it made him feel better than he had in awhile.
Author’s Note: Hi All! I’m so sorry
this is a short part. I’m leaving to go on vacation for a few days and didn’t
have the entire chapter written, but didn’t want to leave everyone hanging (too
much). I figured I would post the first part now and the second part when I get
back. LPlease
don’t hate me!
amerereader – Thank you SO
much for being an avid reader, even though I’m only a few chapters in. And I
promise, I will continue to update as quick as I can!!
MissKitty1990-
Glad you like it! J
Heavensangel28 –
I’m glad I’ve got you questioning things haha That was my plan. We see how Draco treats her now, but will
that change? Dunh dunh dunh! (I also am NOT a fan of Lavender!! She’s so annoying!
And I was proud of Hermione letting her know what was what.)
Crazy Pedantic –
I would say I’m sorry I made you cry, but I’m honored that I was able to evoke
such a strong emotion! I’m definitely going for a heartstring pull here. And I’m
humbled that you think my writing is very true to life. I’m solely writing from
my own emotions- everything Hermione and Draco are feeling, I have experienced
before. I’m sure a lot of us have.
I wanted to thank everyone for
their kind reviews! I’m so glad to hear people are enjoying my story! J
