Susan Bones
Susan sighed heavily, the air seemed to come from her feet so deep it was. She would be 13 in a few months and was in her third year but she had yet to have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. In fact, no one had asked her out yet. Her aunt was beginning to pressure her to be more offensive in her pursuits.
“After Hogwarts it is just that much harder to find a good partner.”
Susan shook her head to get the voice of her aunt out of her mind. Her muggleborn friends didn't understand. Their parents wouldn't let them date until they were 16 but Magical Britain relied heavily on tradition and it was tradition to begin courtship at 14. Susan had no prospects and was running out of time.
“Susan! Hey Susan!”
Susan turned at the loud voice and waited while a body forced its way through the crowd of students traveling between classes. She smiled in amusement and uncertainty when the body got closer and was definitively identified as Harry Potter.
“Hello Harry,” She said softly, blushing when he grinned at her.
He panted a little, smiling and ruffling his dark messy hair. “Hey I was looking for you.”
“I figured,” she said. He blushed a little and she could hear the mental voice of her aunt cursing her instant sarcasm.
“Yea I was a bit obvious what with the screaming at you thing. Anyway, I wanted to see if you had any plans for the Hogsmead Weekend coming up.”
“No.” She shook her head refusing to hope.
“Well good then. Would, uh, you like to go to the Three Broomsticks with me?”
She blushed hard and he looked away, running his hand through his hair again and fixing his glasses nervously.
“Um yea…do you mean, like, a date?” She needed the distinction before she could spread it around. It would be the epitome of humiliation to tell her friends she had a date with The Harry Potter only for it to prove untrue.
“Yea, like a date.” He smiled at her, his green eyes glinting in pleasure.
She frowned at a sudden thought, "I'm not interested in being another one in your harem."
Harry grinned sheepishly, "Well thing is, harem is not the right word. Yes, I'm with Neville, but Ginny is just a crazy fan and I can't have kids with Neville. We both have to find female mates to continue our line. I'm the last Potter you know. Anyway its just a date."
"And Loony Lovegood?" She pressed.
"Its Luna," Harry told her, his shy grin gone, "and she's a friend."
"Well, in that case." She blushed, slightly confused at Harry's complicated answer.“Yes, I’d like that.” Susan all but whispered, her throat tightening in happiness.
“Good. Um.” He reached into his pocket. “I’d like it if you wore this. It’s an anklet. I made it. It has some protective charms so it might tingle a bit. There’s no telling what could happen and I want you to be safe.”
She laughed, surprised and reached out to take the small fragile chain of glinting metal. “Of course Harry. Thank you for thinking of this.”
When her fingers clasped on it he continued to hold it. “Do you accept this of your own free will?” He asked seriously. Susan assumed it had something to do with the protective magic’s and flushed. Only the strong magics needed verbal confirmation like this and that he deemed her worth such effort was heady. Harry Potter was undoubtedly powerful, but creating something like this, at 13, was on another level.
“Yes Harry, I accept.” She handed Harry her bag so she could drop to the floor and put it on immediately.
“Excellent.” He said when she stood again. “I’ll come to the Hufflepuff common rooms to pick you up on Saturday morning at 8:00 then?” She nodded too pleased to speak.
He handed back her bag, kissed her gently on the cheek, blushed furiously and hurried away. She stood there, one hand pressed to her cheek over his kiss until the five minute warning bell chimed.

On Saturday Harry made his way to the Hufflepuff dormitories without haste. He was cursing the need to collar Susan.
For three days he had been plagued with leers, gossip, nosy questions, and girlish giggles from every corner of the castle. That his business was everyone’s business wasn’t new, but it was still annoying. He put up with it because Susan, as niece and primary dependant of Amelia Bones, had access to the ministry and those in charge there. Because everyone knew, Harry would actually have to take her to Hogsmead.
Neville had faced quite the hassle as well which angered Harry as he couldn't protect him this time.
There was a pack of useless giggling females congregating in the hallways in front of Hufflepuff's guardian badger statue. Harry easily slipped into his shy quiet persona.
“Ignore them Harry,” Hermione hissed, glaring at them. "Its a good thing, dating Susan. She's a sweet girl, a bit quiet. I still think you should break up with Neville before you date other people but..." She rattled on. Ron slapped a hand around Harry’s shoulder, a show of brotherly support.
He hunched his shoulders and dipped his head, shuffling his way through the crowded hallway. The girls giggled and whispered or hissed about Neville and disloyalty, surrounding him and covering every available wall space.
Harry made his way through gritting his teeth so not to curse them, females were not something he could relate to and only served one purpose that Harry could find; breeding.
Once through the horde, Harry saw Susan. She was alternating between glaring at the masses and fixing her makeup in a small compact in her fist.
Ron dropped the arm from his shoulder. “Well mate, I figure you can take it from here.” He winked at Harry who forced a blush. Hermione wished him luck and left berating the mass of girls as she dragged Ron along.
“Hello Susan.” Harry mumbled, seemingly embarrassed. He flushed when the girls around them shrieked and whispered.
“Hey Harry, sorry about this.” She glared at the surrounding females ineffectually.
Harry just grinned and shrugged. “Ready to go?”
She nodded clasping her purse close to her body as if unsure of what to do with her hands.
They made their way to the town, a gaggle of whispering girls following them not at all subtly. Harry looked back at them so often Susan finally said, “Let’s just go straight to the Three Broomsticks, Madam Rosmertta won’t tolerate this kind of thing there.”
Harry smiled stiffly and nodded in agreement.
Neither saw the large scraggly black dog that watched their progress with unusual stillness.
The meal was short; Harry didn’t have to fake interest in what she was saying because he couldn’t hear her. They drank their butterbeers and traded shy glances, jerking away whenever their eyes met. Harry lamented its necessity but he could lose their followers on the trip back he knew. Finally, their lunch was eaten and Harry hurried her out of the bar and into an alley.
He shushed her and threw his invisibility cloak over her. He knew she wouldn’t be able to speak of it after the process was complete.
Now invisible, Harry and Susan hurried to the Shrieking Shack. She balked when their destination became clear. “Walk with me.” Harry ordered and Susan’s body obeyed. She gasped down at her feet which were moving out of her control. He was suprised at how much he loved watching as his victim slowly realized her situation and lack of control.
“Harry, what’s happening?” He winked at her and her protests quieted. It was all a game to him. He wanted to see how much she would let him do before orders were a necessity. When her task was complete, she would disappear anyway. He didn’t have the energy to deal with a useless slave. Susan was weak magically and mentally and Ginny and Luna were far more loyal. He didn't need to many brood mares.
The Shrieking Shack was very different from the last time he’d entered. The first room was untouched but as Harry led Susan upstairs he could tell that the stairway was cleared and the rooms along the hall cleaned up. She hesitated to enter the room he indicated so Harry was forced to push her. She cried out at the force of it and stumbled into the runic circle of ash drawn on the floor. She froze and arched as the metallic anklet melded into her flesh as a tattoo.
“Harry” She hissed, afraid.
“Be silent.” Her mouth snapped shut. “Do not move except to breath.” Her body froze, only the slow rhythmic breathing and instinctive pumping of blood gave evidence of life remaining in her.
From the shadows cloaked figures emerged but Susan couldn’t turn to see how many. She whimpered but the sound never left her throat.
“Did you know Susan, that I prefer my own sex?” Harry gently pulled off the hood of one of the cloaked figures to show Neville Longbottom. His eyes worshiped Harry and Harry leaned over to kiss his cheek. Neville’s eyes closed, overwhelmed by the gift.
“He was my first,” Harry confided. “I didn’t even know how much I dislike females until Hogwarts. I always assumed I’d get a wife, have a load of boys and rule my family with an iron fist. We’d be perfectly normal, perfectly functional.” Harry laughed at himself and Neville smiled despite himself. “Perfectly boring. I’m too young for children,” Harry told her, “which is unfortunate for you since that is all most women are good for.”
Neville handed Harry a bronze knife but Harry waved it aside. “You do the honors beloved.”
Susan’s mind screamed as Neville approached her, the knife gleaming in his hand. That she would die from this had not escaped her. Neville clasped her arm and cut it deeply catching the small stream of blood in a bronze bowl and handing it reverently to Harry. The blood was added to a smoking cauldron she’d not noticed until now.
Using a ladle Harry distributed the potion into a glass vial.
When one of the other cloaked figures moved to pour in a bottle of thick white paste Harry halted them.
“No I have no need for more pets, lets see what this does. Besides,” he turned malicious eyes on Susan’s frozen form taking in her thick waist and pimpled face. “She isn’t up to my usual standard and will be rather useless once her task is complete.”
Harry reached up to the cloaked figure who'd aproached and pulled down the hood. Luna Lovegood's white blond hair sparkled in the dark room and she looked up at Harry through her lashes. Harry sneered at Susan. "You insulted Luna. I cannot let that go. She came to me of her own free will, asked for my mark knowing how it would bond her to me. She is special to me."
Harry waved his wand at Susan and she felt like her skin was sliding off, then that her flesh was burning, and then was freezing. She writhed in her mind, her body unresponsive, until Harry canceled the charm. "It's interesting to me that that charm isn't illegal. It's a variation of the tickle charm."
"I'm satisfied with that for now, considering you will die when I'm done with you. I don't punish those I don't care about." Harry told her calmly.
The horror of what was happening to her couldn't penetrate the fog of shock protecting her mind. She was afraid but couldn't show it, screaming but couldn't voice it, sick but nothing she could do would stop what Harry was doing.
Luna bent down to nuzzle into Harry's chest and Harry rested a hand on her white blond hair for a moment. Then he waved Neville forward. Neville brought one of the vials to Susan but she didn’t move. “Take it and drink it.” Harry ordered and she responded immediately.
She drank deeply of the potion. Once the vial was empty it dropped from her useless hands. In her mind, a battle took place. Even though she fought, tears of shame and humiliation at her weakness streaming down her immobile cheeks, the potion overcame her and anything that was distinctly Susan disappeared, leaving only subservience to Harry, her master. His will was her will, his pleasure her pleasure, his words her life’s direction.
“Your duty is to protect my secrets. You will act as you always have, telling the curious only that our date ended badly when I couldn’t speak to you because of the crowd. You will not tell anyone of your duty to me, your mission, or anything learned since this morning. Your mission is to get your Aunt, Amelia Bones to verbally accept the anklet I will give you and watch her put it on her ankle over Yule holiday. Once that is done you will report to me via owl and then act normally, remembering none of this, until I reply with further instructions.”
“Yes master.” Susan said emotionlessly. Her mission was given, her duty defined. She would serve her master and obey the letter and spirit of his orders.

“Harry!” Hermione gasped and dropped the Daily Prophet over her breakfast plate. Ron and Harry both turned to her with inquiring expressions. “Susan Bones, she killed herself over Yule.” Hermione hissed.
Harry dropped his fork while Ron’s mouth fell open. “Why?” Harry breathed.
“It doesn’t say,” Hermione quickly skimmed the paper again, searching for any clues she missed the first time, “all it says is that her Aunt, Amelia Bones, found her in front of the fireplace, she’d…oh its horrible.” Hermione pushed the paper over the table so Harry could read for himself.
He stared at it for a moment before meeting Ron’s curious and horrified eyes. “She bashed her head on the mantle until her skull cracked.”
Hermione held her hand over her mouth to stifle a bout of gagging.
“Blimy,” Ron said eloquently.
After a moment of silence Ron ventured, “Are they sure she did it to herself?” Hermione glared at him.
“What I’m just saying, that’s quite a way to go.”
Dean, who had been listening in added, “Yea I heard that women usually kill themselves with poison not violence.” Hermione snorted but Harry nodded.
“Well she is the niece of the Head of Aurors.”
The silence was thick as those listening exchanged glances. “Are you saying..” Ron had to swallow to complete his thought, “that she was killed, as like, a warning to her Aunt? Do you think it was Sirius Black?”
Harry shrugged sadly, “Could be. It’s not like the Prophet has ever reported anything accurately. Hermione, can you think of one reason she had to kill herself?”
Hermione bowed her head in thought but shook her head, “You didn’t reject her did you?”
Harry sighed sadly, “No, I was going to ask her out again somewhere more private.”
She shook her head, “Then I can't think of one reason.”
“So,” Ron began, “the message could have been for you…”
Harry said nothing and his silence was damning.
Harry’s supposition was all over the school by dinner. Dumbledore himself stood up to address the issue.
“Students, I know how distressing the loss of a friend is. As most of you are aware, one of our own, Miss Susan Bones has left this life for the next great adventure. Her joy of life and friendship will be missed most dearly.” He bowed his head, removing his glasses to wipe his eyes. “I believe that she would want us to live on. We will mourn her passing and celebrate the life she lived.”
The Great Hall was silent, every eye on the Headmaster or contemplating Susan’s death.
“The violent nature of her demise has given rise to many rumors and theories, each more grizzly then the last. I ask that we focus on her life and not her death. Susan was a friend to many, a girl of joy and laughter. She was a Hufflepuff through and through, loyal and hardworking. Those who knew her knew true gladness. She faced challenges with courage and fortitude and emulating her life is not the worst thing we could strive to do. For those of us who need extra help dealing with her loss, the Ministry has provided mind healers and your Professors and Prefects have extra ears. I urge you to use these resources and not to lose yourself in what may have been.”
He sat down and the students slowly filtered out, solemn, to walk to their dorms.
