Chapter 3: September First
Sitting on the train, Harry figured he had a few things to be grateful for. First, that he had managed to find an empty compartment away from everyone else. Secondly, that he had managed to not only survive the summer at Grimmauld Place, but that he also made it through relatively sane. And lastly, that he was finally on his way to Hogwarts.
Harry couldn’t wait to start distancing himself from Ron, Hermione and a lot of the other Gryffindors who he couldn’t stand. It would be the first thing on his to-do list of things to do, to make his true self really show.
As he still had quite a long train ride to go, Harry figured he might as well begin planning some of ideas out.
Harry had just gotten out a quill and some parchment when the door to the compartment burst open. It closed just as suddenly and Harry looked up to see a male, with short and curly dark hair, facing the door and panting.
Clearing his throat softly, Harry saw the teen startle and quickly turn around. A spark of recognition flashed in both sets if eyes.
“Potter. ”
“Zabini. ”
With the sound of his name being spoken, Zabini seemed to come to himself and sneered at Harry.
“What are you doing here, Potter?” he spat.
“I could ask you the same thing, since you so rudely barged in,” Harry stated sarcastically. “But if you must know, I was sitting here enjoying the peace and quiet. ”
Zabini glared for another long second, “Right and where’s your precious Weasel and Mudblood?”
“I don’t know. Nor do I really care. ”
That startled Zabini again, but he recovered quicker this time.
He stood there, staring Harry down, and Harry was swiftly becoming irritated. “Well, since I answered your questions, how about you answer mine. Why did you come barging in here like your tail was on fire?”
Zabini looked down at his shoes, blushing slightly. “It’s nothing, really,” he said softly.
He got a sad look on his face and was turning around to exit the compartment when Harry stopped him. “Hey,” he said gently. “I know we’re not friends or anything and I’m a Gryffindor, so I’m probably the last person you want to talk to, but if you would like to talk I’m more than willing to listen. ”
Zabini stared at Harry, before letting out a long sigh and sitting down across from him. “Alright. But if you say a word of this to anyone Potter, anyone at all, I will curse you so much that you’ll be nothing but a puddle of mud at my feet. Got it?”
“Got it. ”
Zabini stayed silent another minute before starting on his situation. “I’m extremely frustrated and pissed off at that bloody wanker, Draco, right now”
“Isn’t he one of your best friends? Why are you pissed?” Harry asked, confused.
“Yes, he is my best friend. I’m angry with him, though, because this summer I told him …” Zabini closed his eyes in what seemed to be pain. “This summer I told him that I was attracted to him and wanted to date him. ”
“Did he refuse? Is that why you’re upset?”
Zabini huffed out an angry laugh, “No, he didn’t refuse. He didn’t say a bloody thing. And now anytime I try to bring it up, he either diverts the conversation or ignores me completely. ”
Running his hands through his hair, Zabini continued, “And today, in our compartment, he had the audacity to flirt with Parkinson right in front of my face. I know he was doing it to bother me because he can’t even stand her. ”
Harry blinked, trying to take it all in. “So that’s why you came storming in here? To get away from that?”
Zabini huffed, “In a nutshell? Yes!”
Silence reigned in the compartment for a few minutes until Zabini worked up the courage to ask the question that had been plaguing his mind for a little while. “So, how come you’re in here and not sitting with the other two/thirds of the ‘golden-trio’?”
Harry gave a dark chuckle, “I’ve been really naïve about a lot of things for so long. ”
Zabini noticed a far away look come into Harry’s eyes, “What do you mean?”
Harry got a small, sad smile on his face. “Before I turned eleven and came to Hogwarts, I didn’t know what it was like to have a friend. In fact, the first person I considered a friend was Hagrid.
“When I got to Diagon Alley and on the train for the first time, all these different people seemed to know who I was and wanted to be friends with me. I sort of just latched onto the first few people I met that seemed nice. ”
Harry looked down at his hands, “But what I noticed a little second year, and more this past year is that the people I thought were my friends and who I thought would stand by me, were so easy to succumb to gossip and such. ”
Harry looked up at Zabini with a fierce determination in his eyes. “So I decided I wasn’t going to let them or anyone else hold me back or manipulate me. Especially after I found out this summer that they were keeping things from me on the Headmaster’s orders. ”
Zabini let out a loud breath, “You know, suddenly my problems don’t seem so big anymore. ”
Harry couldn’t his laughter at that remark.
They sat there staring at each other for an awkward moment before Harry decided to act on his instincts. He held out his hand.
Zabini gave it an odd look and then moved his eyes up, giving Harry a questioning glance.
“I’m Harry. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Harry said while moving his hand a little closer.
Zabini looked at his hand a moment longer before slowly extending his own. “I’m Blaise. It’s a pleasure to meet you as well. ” And gave Harry a grin.
The rest of the train ride passed pleasantly for both Harry and Blaise. No one had come to bother them and they had had the time to learn more about each other. By the time the train pulled in to the station at Hogsmeade, they were well on their way to becoming friends.

Deciding that they weren’t yet ready to deal with their housemates, Harry and Blaise decided to catch a carriage together. Just the two of them.
However, just as they were readying to close the carriage door, a slender hand reached out to stop its progress and a girl with long, blonde hair and radish earrings hopped in with them.
She looked up and her wide blue eyes quickly took both Blaise and Harry in.
“Hello. I hope you don’t mind that I joined you. Some of my fellow Ravens have decided to already hide my things, including my shoes and this carriage was closest. ” She spoke in a dreamy, out-of-touch voice.
“Erm, it’s alright,” Harry said, looking down at her feet to see rainbow-striped socks.
“I’m Luna by the way and you’re Harry Potter. My father and I believe you, Harry, about you-know-who being back. He even wrote an article about it, He’s the editor of the Quibbler.”
“Um thanks … Luna,” Harry said, shifting his eyes from hers.
Luna looked over towards Blaise, “I don’t remember who you are, it must be because of the Wrackspurts around my head making my brain go fuzzy. ”
Harry and Blaise shared a glance.
Thankfully, they came to a stop shortly, having arrived at the castle. Luna took off out of the carriage the boys watched her go.
“Well she’s an odd one,” Blaise stated, still trying to get his mind around the strange girl.
“That’s for sure,” Harry agreed.
They made their way together into the castle, ignoring the looks from students and portraits alike. Before the got to the Great Hall they decided to meet up later that week in the library. Splitting up, they sat down at their respective tables.
Not too long after having a seat, Harry was surrounded by Gryffindors, including Ron and Hermione who were doing there best to question him.
“How come you didn’t sit with us Harry?” “What’s this I hear about you riding the train with a Slytherin?” “Why were you in a carriage with Loony Lovegood?”
Harry, fed up with their questions, moved down the table. He found himself surrounded by second year Gryffindors.
Soon the sorting began and afterwards Dumbledore announced the new Defense against the Dark Arts professor. It was Dolores Umbridge, who was a ministry official, if the students around him were telling the truth.
After announcements, the feast commenced and Harry was soon heading up to Gryffindor tower. He was inside the common room and walking to the dorm when Ginny ran up in front of him.
“Hey Harry, I was thinking. Since we’re back at school now and I gave you space in the summer to think about it, I think it would be a good idea for us to get together,” Ginny said, smiling.
Harry’s jaw clenched. “Look Ginny, I told you before and I’ll tell you again. I am not interested in you. Not at all. So back off. ”
Ginny pouted, “You’ll change your mind soon, Harry. I know you will. ”
Harry just rolled his eyes and walked past her, up the stairs to the dorm. He hurriedly got changed and spelled his bed drapes shut so no one would bother him.
Lying back, he couldn’t help but think that today, even though the trouble with the Gryffindors and his ex-friends, was a great first day back.
