The construction went well and soon enough two new family huts stood on the horizon. Fenir began moving his treasures out from his previous hut, leaving nothing but a few old furs to comfort the sub. Harry was quiet throughout the entire process, he seemed content to huddle himself in the corner as the door outside was strengthened and locked. He ate small amounts when he as watched by Melim. She had become his only interaction with the pack, bringing him his meals, making sure he ate them and leaving again. She would never speak to him, except for the occasional growl when she decided he was dallying.
The pack, itself, was starting to buzz with excitement, as it did before most full moons. This was when they were truly a pack, when they ran and played with little worries or cares. Their bodies were strengthening, their senses heightening to the point where the forest could no longer hide its secrets from them. They were becoming one with the world around them and they revelled in it. The cubs were especially excitable, being unable to sit still for more than a few minutes before the wild would call them again for another adventure. It seemed worse this time, like somehow the wild magic in the sub infused into the wild around them, and the pups were extremely sensitive to it, but they couldn't explain what they felt or why. More than one sub had become exasperated with the energetic young ones as the forest around them seemed to vibrate with excess energy. The pups were curious about the sub, at first. They had a lot of difficultly understanding why he wouldn't be playing with them, why he had to be locked away and guarded. At first they had tried to explain everything in a way the children could understand. They told them how he had done a very bad thing, he had hurt one of them and now he was to be punished. Unfortunately this had mostly lead to more questions about when he would be allowed out to play, their understanding of punishment being more about the odd spanking and being confined for a few hours. It was at that point that the adults would look away sadly, not wanting to destroy the innocence that radiated from the smiling faces, the belief that no crime was unforgivable. After that the questions were shrugged off, occasionally accompanied by a clip round the ear and a gruff 'Don't question the Alpha.' The pups learned to drop the subject quickly and instead began their own rumours, each one becoming more fantastic than the last, fuelled by excess energy and a hunger which wouldn't be quenched for a few days, when the moon would rise full and bright in the sky.
There were only two wolves who didn't seem caught up by the excitement that engulfed the pack. Fenir was more attuned to the world around him, being an Alpha, and could feel the disquiet that seemed to reverberate around the forest. It was like a jingle of bells just behind his ear, sometimes it would be like happy laughter, like children playing or a spring morning, other times it would be darker, like a storm that was just about to start raging, he could almost feel the cold wind blow through his bones and the sun disappear. He watched the pups react to the changes, their mad energy suddenly redirected from playing to a viscous fight. One thing remained constant was that once the sun descended from the sky an overwhelming sadness seemed to engulf the forest. The jingling stopped instead the noise became more of a low moan, like a wounded animal just waiting for death. The cubs were normally asleep at that time of night but it would disturb their dreams, making phantoms chase them in the darkness. The only other member of the pack affected was Lemmy, although he was unaware the cause, believing it to be fluctuating pregnancy hormones. Several times a night the sadness would flood his senses, causing him to cry out and tears to fall from his eyes. All he could do was describe the heart wrenching pain it caused him, like everything he loved had just been taken from him. He would often rub his belly protectively for quite some time after the attacks, even after the sadness had passed and he was once again caught up in the exhilaration of the pack. Fenir was no fool, he knew it was something to do with the sub, something to do with the inordinate amount of magic which flowed from his body but he what he couldn't understand were the emotions he was expelling. The anger was understandable, although he had done nothing to escape or rejoin his compatriots, but the happiness and sadness were a complete mystery. He had gone into to see the sub a couple of times to try an work it out but all he saw was fear reflected in the glassy green eyes which stared back at him. It didn't matter anyway, in a few days he would be changed and the wild magic which flowed around him would be redirected to fully embrace his wolf.
The other Werewolf in the pack who was not content was slightly more quiet about it. Melim had always been a little strange, seeing reflections in the moon of forests and burning, watching ripples in a pond to find out whether a pup would be a dom or a sub. Knowing things, bad or good, had always given her a far off look in her eyes which others always saw as not quite right. When she had lost her pups and mate her strangeness seemed to magnify. For a while she had lost her mind completely, losing three different parts of her soul in one day, her two sons and her loving mate, had caused her to retreat into herself, no longer caring for the world outside herself. It was only her mate, Tucker, that had bought her back into reality.
Tucker was the only person who had ever looked beyond her vacant expression and see her. He had always bought her back from her visions, reminded her of the world around her. And then there was her two little miracles, Pan and Min, such wonderful children. They were her reason for living, her everything, full of life and love she had no longer retreated into the other place where she would see, ignoring her visions to play with her children. When the Wizards came Tucker stayed behind with the doms whilst she had run, carrying Min in her arms and pulling Pan along by his hand. Suddenly she was alone, the other subs had run a different way, Min was crying in her arms and Pan was gone, slipped from her hand during her frenzy. She started to scream for him but he never appeared. Her screams bought the Wizards to them, they loomed over her and Min and one grabbing Min's arm the other pointing his wand at her. The were distracted as her darling child grabbed hold of the man's arm and bit into it. He let go and flung the child across the clearing and he landed with a sickening crunch.
That was when the Alpha had found her, saving her life when she wished he hadn't, when she wished she could join her children in death. It was only later when she found out about Tucker's death did she truly retreat, as she always had. They had never found Pan, he had either been taken by the wizards to be re-educated or was dead somewhere in the vast forest, because he had slipped through her fingers. Since that day she had never been the same and never would be. Some of the other subs had tried to get her to take a new mate, have more children, she was still young she could have more, but she had refused. They didn't know, didn't see Tucker as he watched her, as he threw rocks in the pond so she could see, as he stroked her face when the nightmares became too much. He would always leave but he would always come back. She knew the unmated doms like Han and Nero had complained to Fenir about her refusal to take another mate of them, but he could do nothing to force her the choice of mate always being the sub's purgative, it was her choice.
Since the loss of her family she had had little to give back to the pack, subs where of little use when they were unmated and childless but now the Alpha had given her a task, something that she could fulfil to give back to the pack that had supported her for all her life. It was good to have a task again, since she had lost her pups she had very little to give to the pack, Now she had something, a service she could perform for them and her Alpha, she was no longer useless and she would fulfil her duty as her Alpha ordered. Although she didn't speak much anyway she had yet to say a word to her charge, as she had been told. She made sure he finished his food, storing his energy for the change that was to come in the next few days. He was a strange boy, the sub, he would look at her, cock his head to one side and look into her eyes so deeply it was like he could see things, see straight into her, or other times he would stare over her shoulder at something far off into the distance. When he stared the air around her would change, becoming oppressive, as if there was a storm coming and the pressure was building, it would become almost difficult to breath as she let out her usual growl to bring him back to reality. The sub would then turn back into the scared little rabbit he had been, anxiously scooping up food with his fingers, his eyes darting from each side of the hut. In some ways he reminded her of when she had tried to escape this world, when her children were gone and before Tucker had returned to her, but in some ways he was worse, locked away completely from the rest of his world, without even a pack to take care of him. She cut off her own sympathetic feelings, once again concentrating on her task. Make the sub ready for his change.
A/N This chapter was a bit difficult to get down. I did a chapter plan, which is something I have never bothered to do before, and for some reason I had put in this interlude chapter. I thought I was going to have difficultly filling it, expecting it to maybe hit 600 words, but it has taken on a life of its own and is actually now my longest chapter. Unfortunately as it is completely different to what it was meant to be when I started writing it it doesn't flow quite right. I may try some small edits on this chapter in the future and I will let you know if i change it.
