Chapter Four
It was late October and once again Charlie found himself back at Hogwarts for his sixth Courting Ball of the season. He handed the host his wand without having to be prompted and walked through the doors. Because school was in session, they were not being taken into the Great Hall like the first time he had attended, so he followed the crowd down to a part of the castle that he thought only Fred and George had been to in the past hundred years.
His brother Bill was already in attendance and was on the dance floor with a witch Charlie didn’t recognize. He nodded to him and moved to the punch table where he found a few friends.
“Evening, fellas. Looks like a party,” Charlie said.
He poured himself a drink and waited for his wand to buzz. It didn’t take long and with a sigh he excused himself.
“You really hate this!”, Darrin Waters laughed. Charlie and Darrin had been mates ever since second year when they both started playing Quidditch for Gryffindor. Darrin had been a beater while Charlie was a seeker.
“Aye. This has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.”
“Charlie, if you don’t give it any seriousness, you’ll end up with a witch you didn’t choose of your own accord. No one wants that; to live with a woman the Ministry picked for them and be forced to like it,” Darrin said.
“I’m bloody 20 years old, mate. I haven’t yet met a witch I want to spend two dates with much less the rest of my life. Besides, I always imagined when I met the one, well it sounds stupid to say out loud, but when I met the one, it’d be like cupid’s arrow or something. I’m waiting on something akin to what my parents had. Merlin’s beard, that sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it.”
“No,” answered Jackson Pents, another Gryffindor friend, “It doesn’t sound ridiculous. I want the same thing, but it seems it has to be forced rather than earned. I have met a couple witches I’d like to see again, more than the requirement states, at least. But I think that for the most part we are too close to have graduated. I still look at all these girls I went to school with and think of them in terms of what and who they were, not who they are now. You’d think I’d be able to see past it, especially since I am not the person I was when I was at school, but I look at my list and see Alexandria Bennett, remember her, from Slytherin house? And I remember ‘bitch from hell’ and ‘cheater at charms’ more than I actually see her as the woman she became. She may very well be the kindest soul ever but I’ll never know it because I’m walking into this with that preconceived notion.”
“Exactly,” Charlie replied. “And as I remember it,” he looked at his wand, “Georgianna O’Bryan wasn’t the best looking, Andrea Pierce was a bitch, and Rachel Watts, well, she was nice, I think…one pleasant one in the lot.”
…..
Charlie Weasley couldn’t take it anymore. The falseness of it all was beginning to be overwhelming. He followed his feet out of the castle and found himself exploring the grounds he spent so much time on growing up. He thought that quite possible he was the only student who had ever truly walked the entire acreage of Hogwarts. The school sat on an expansive ground and had so many wonders to see. Retracing some of his favorite steps, he finally approached a small lake that he only determined was off the south end of what appeared to be the Slytherin common room; it was already occupied by a woman.
If he was being honest, he’d say the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on was standing on the bank of that lake. She was tall, with long almost black hair flowing in the breeze of the cooling English air. She wasn’t wearing a cloak and he knew she was cold because her arms were wrapped around her. He knew she was here not to be disturbed but he couldn’t help himself. Charlie took his own cloak off and approached her.
As he was wrapping the garment around her shoulders, she sighed, and said, “No. I will not marry you.”
He chuckled. “Good, cause I’m not asking.”
She turned to him and Charlie allowed her time to search his face. She pulled the cloak tighter and smiled, “Charlie Weasley. Aren’t you supposed to be inside putting the moves on some poor unsuspecting witch?’
He couldn’t help but laugh. For indeed, Bill’s words of Charlie making use of the Courtship Balls as a quick way to get laid were fast becoming legend.
“What are you doing out here all alone in the cold? It could be dangerous for a young woman if found by the wrong wizard.”
She looked at him for a long moment before she replied. Charlie got the feeling that she had a lot on her mind.
“I’m tired of being proposed to for one night. I thought if I couldn’t be found…” she turned and looked at the lake. “What are you doing out here?’, she asked.
“Basically the same. I don’t want to propose to anyone. Running. I guess. This has to be the stupidest thing the Ministry has ever done. There is probably only about 25 percent of the people in there that actually want to get married and I would hazard a guess they’d all like to do it the old fashion way.
“I gather you have been overrun with wizards asking for your hand?” Charlie continued.
“They aren’t actually interested in me. They just want for this charade to be over.”
They stood in silence for a few moments, watching the moon reflect off the water, each lost in their own thoughts. She startled him when she spoke again, “So, what has Charlie Weasley been up to these last few years?”
“I took a job in Romania working with dragons. You?”
“I had heard that England wanted you to play Quidditch for them. I was somewhat surprised that you chose not to, but then, I didn’t know you well, but I did get the impression fame and fortune wasn’t your cup of tea.”
“Aye, England came knocking, but I wanted a regular life. I like my work. I like my life.”
Charlie lit a cigarette and rocked back on his heels. “Look at the two of us; escaping the hubbub inside to the safety of the grounds…I remember being a boy, sitting in this spot for what seemed like hours, watching the creatures go by.”
“Charlie, don’t toy with me, I know you brought witches here for a shag. You were infamous with your wanker, you know.”
Charlie smiled. I did do my share, I’ll admit, but in my defense I was a horny bastard.”
“Uh-huh, still are, aren’t you.”
The wind picked up and a shiver ran through Charlie’s body, “You should take your cloak back,” she said, “I can cast another warming charm.”
“We should go in. The ball is concluding and I think we will be able to take our leave, unless you’re staying the night.”
“Here,” she said taking his cloak off her shoulders, “thank you for the use.”
He took his coat and turned to go indoors, “Are you not coming?” he asked.
“Not at this time, I have to stay for a little longer,” she replied.
“Here, then. Keep the cloak, it’ll keep you warm.”
He placed it about her shoulders once again and looked into her eyes once again. They were sad and he wanted to ask if there was anything she needed, but he knew the Slytherin would never tell.
“Nice to see you again, Willow,” he said as he took steps back towards the castle.
…..
Entering the front doors of Hogwarts, Charlie was mobbed by his family members.
“Albus has asked for the members of the Order of the Phoenix to meet in his office and stay the rest of the evening,” his father whispered to him.
With a nod, Charlie caught the eye of Bill and waited on him to walk to the Headmaster’s office. Entering, Charlie noted that the room was full of witches and wizards; Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Severus Snape and Mad-Eye Moody were in the corner of the room talking animatedly about something. Harsh whispers were all that could be heard.
Dumbledore walked into the room and took a seat behind his desk, with a sigh he said, “Seeing that the majority of us are here, I thought we could take this time to talk about the repercussions of this new law. Many of you fall under the Proclamation. It’s good to see you abiding by it. Have any of you found someone yet?”
…..
An hour and a half later, the topic went from the Marriage Law to organizing troops and back around again. Severus Snape had excused himself at least a half hour ago and Charlie was wondering if it would be rude for him to do the same. Mustering up the courage, he looked over at his mother and said, “Mum, I’m gonna slip out and catch some sleep. I have to travel home tomorrow.”
“Wait another moment, Charlie. We’re wrapping up now.”
Charlie huffed but did as he was told, and sure enough, not minutes later, everyone began filing out of the Headmaster’s office. The school was still roped off baring the guests from the students and therefore, guests that were staying overnight were being housed in a dormitory that hadn’t been used in ages. Seeing as it was so late, most of the Order members chose to take a bed instead of traveling home.
As Charlie, Bill, Molly, Remus and Sirius were making their way past the hospital wing; Severus Snape nearly knocked them over. Carrying in his arms was a young woman who had been badly hurt.
“Move.” He barked. “Pomfrey! Where are you? Come quickly!”
Molly bustled in behind Snape, “Professor, what can I do to help?” she asked.
“Find Poppy. Clear a space. She has quarters in the back.”
Molly went running towards the back, yelling for Madame Pomfrey.
Charlie and Remus grabbed a bed and yanked the sheets, “Here, Severus”, Remus hollered.
Snape carried her over and placed her on the bed. Hurriedly, he began removing her cloak, tossing it towards the nearest person. Charlie caught it, “Oi! This is mine!”
Turning towards the bed, he saw her face. Battered and swollen, he could see the start of bruises bubbling up. Her gown was torn. Blood was dripping from her head and legs.
“What happen?” Charlie questioned. “I just left her. Oh no, I left her alone. I shouldn’t have left her alone. What’s happen to her?”
“Mr. Weasley”, Snape bit, “Control yourself; hand me those bandages.”
Madame Pomfrey came running into the hospital wing, barking spells as she moved towards Snape.
“What happen?” She asked.
“Found her by the lake. She has been beaten and raped. She has traces of dark spells on her body; I will work to expunge them if you will see to her wounds.”
Snape took her torn gown and ripped it off of her, then took out his wand and started chanting as he ran it up and down her body. Poppy Pomfrey was busy healing her wounds.
“Severus, she was raped.”
“I’m aware of that”, he said.
“Severus, she was raped by many. I am detecting at least five different sets of semen. Oh, child, what you must have went through.”
Anger built in Charlie at himself. How had he left her there alone? He knew better than to leave a witch in the middle of the night all by herself. But this was Hogwarts, and everyone is always safe at Hogwarts.
Raped. Numerous men raped her. After he left her there. Remus came over and placed a hand on his shoulder, “You couldn’t have known, Charlie. No sense in beating yourself up over it. Let’s go to the grounds and see if we can find the men who did this. Severus, send for us if we are needed.”
Snape nodded and he continued to work. Bill, Remus and Sirius followed Charlie to the last place he had seen Willow. There, they looked around to see if there were any remains that could be used to track the culprits.
“You followed her out here?” questioned Bill.
“No. I went for a walk around the grounds and found her here just staring at the water. I spoke to her. She was freezing without a cloak, so I gave her mine. I was only with her for fifteen minutes or so; I should have insisted she come inside with me. Why didn’t I insist?”
…..
Molly sat and watch the young girl shake and start to vomit. She grabbed a pail and ran it over placing it under the girls chin. Molly stroked her hair and cooed at her that it would all be over soon. The girl violently vomited and started to cry. Molly’s heart broke as she attended to the youngster.
“Professor Snape,” Molly whispered, “What is this that she is throwing up? It looks like black tar and then also a thick white liquid.”
Severus looked at her, not truly knowing how to answer, knowing that Molly Weasley was a good person with good and right morals towards others and would never harm anyone just for the sake of harming them.
He cleared his throat and stated, “The black tar looking substance is the dark magic that was used on her to help control her, to hurt her. The white, well, Mrs. Weasley, that’s semen. One can only swallow so much of anything.”
Snape watched a tear slide down Molly’s face as she doubled her ministrations trying to comfort the girl.
“Mrs. Weasley,” Snape said, attempting to gather her attention. When she didn’t respond, Snape said, “Molly, you don’t have to be here. Poppy and I can handle this.”
Molly shook her head and focused on the girl, “It’s ok dear, everything will be alright. Let it all out dear.”
Snape knew that she wasn’t going anywhere and continued to work.
….
Morning came and with it brought new light at the horrors that Willow Scott endured. Severus had successfully rid her body of all the dark magic and Poppy had been able to mend her bones and cuts but Molly worried about mending her emotionally.
“She can’t be alone,” Molly stated with finality. “She needs to be with people who will care for her and help put her back together. I say she comes back to the house of the Order and we are all able to look after her.”
“No,” Snape once again stated without bothering to explain himself. “She cannot.”
“But why!” Molly yelled at him. “You keep saying that but offering no reason as to why she can’t. Sirius has said he doesn’t mind her presence and as he is the owner of the ruddy house, you’d think his word would be more heavily weighted!”
Professor Snape looked at the woman. He knew she meant well but didn’t understand the trouble she was fighting for. So, he settled on some type of response to her questions.
“She is a Slytherin. Her father is imprisoned for War Crimes. With the Dark Lord. I would think it would be highly inappropriate for her to be at the Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.”
Molly pulled herself up to full height, which really wasn’t impressive and stated, “Many of us are unfortunate enough to be related to imprisoned witches or wizards. That doesn’t mean that we are bad also. She is coming with me. And that is the final word.”
Severus Snape walked towards her and looked down at her with an intensity that made her nervous. After several moments, he replied, “You mean that now; let’s see how you feel later.”
