The next morning I did not go to the Great Hall for breakfast, instead I went up to the Library and took out 3 large books. One was a history book of the this past century, the other was potions and the third on healing with magic. I would have to catch up with the past 64 years that I missed and make sure that all my knowledge was up to date. I remained in the library to read instead of going back into my room in the dungeons. I didn't mind the dungeons at all now, back when I was a student at Hogwarts I disliked it very much. Right now I only needed a change of scenery.
"Umm... Ms. Harlow?" I heard from behind me as I read the history book with only three pages left to go. I looked up and saw a girl with frizzy blonde hair and a reluctant look in her eyes.
"Yes?" I asked raising my eyebrows.
"I know that Professor Dumbledore said you help first and second year students with potions.... But I was only wondering... If you could help me with one, although I'm a fourth year student, " she said nervously.
"What potion is it?" I asked, hoping it was one I knew and not a new one they had come up with.
"The Draught of Peace," she said.
I sighed, "Oh that? Okay. Hey, isn't that a difficult potion to make for a fourth year?"
She chuckled a bit, "yes it is!"
"Alright, well let's go make that potion umm....??" I said.
She hastily put her books on the table and shook my hand, "Hermione Granger, m'am."
I gathered my books and we headed towards the potions classroom. It was already the end of the day, so the room should be empty of students. On our way to the dungeons I asked Hermione a series of questions about the world, though nothing serious to make her think that I did not belong during this time. She seemed very intelligent for her age and I was surprised at how much she knew especially considering she was muggle born. Nothing against them, but it is usually more difficult for muggle born children to catch on to things about magic because all magical born children are surrounded by it since the day they are born and therefore know more.
We arrived at the potions classroom laughing about a boy named Seamus Finnigan who is in her class and always manages to blow things up. I would have to meet this famous Seamus.
"Ahem," someone made a noise in the room. I looked up and saw Severus sitting behind his desk grading papers.
"Oh, Severus!" I said putting my hand up to my heart, "You startled me. Why are you sitting here in the dark?" I said looking around at the dark, stark classroom.
"How can you see in here?" I said and went over to the far wall, opening up the curtains to let light in. I turned around to see a horrified look on Hermione's face.
"Dear, are you okay?" I asked her.
"Uh-huh, yes," she piped up looking at Severus.
I went over to Severus's desk and gave him a smile, "Severus, I hope you don't mind but Hermione here needed help with her potion's homework."
Severus eyed Hermione who tried to shrink out of the room, then looked up at me and sighed.
"Very well," he said and started to get up. But I quickly put my hand on his shoulders and pushed him back down on the chair. He looked up at me as if shocked and did not move.
"Don't be silly Severus, you can stay. This is your classroom afterall. We won't make too much noise, alright?" I said and motioned for Hermione to get the ingredients for the potion.
As I helped Hermione create the potion, she became less and less tense. I wondered why she acted this way in front of Severus. She continued to stir the potion and avoided looking at Severus.
"So, Hermione. Tell me about the TriWizard tournament. I'm afraid I was ill when they called the champions for the schools, do you know any of them?" I inquired completely interested, I have always wanted to watch a tournament, but unfortunately they were stopped for a few centuries due them being so dangerous- and now only reinstanted.
"Well, there's a girl named Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons. Viktor Krum from Durmstrang. And then Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory from our school," she said proudly at that last part.
I tilted my head, "why are there four? I thought there are only supposed to be three."
She scratched her head, "uhh. Yes, but I don't know. It's just what the Goblet did."
"How odd," I said. The potioned emitted silvery vapour and we both smiled widely. "That's perfect, Hermione!" I said, "You hardly needed my help at all."
"Thank you so much, Ms. Harlow!" she said and put some of the potion into vials. She continued to clean up as I went over to Severus's desk who was still grading papers.
"You missed lunch, Severus," I stated and as I looked at my watch.
He pursed his lips, "so did you."
I grinned, "I wasn't really that hungry anyways." I sat on his desk and for one brief instant his eyes wandered to my bottom but quickly looked away and he up at the wall at nothing in particular. I blushed slightly and I noticed that he did too.
"You did not come up for breakfast," he stated. "You should go eat something, I'm sure there are some food left. If not the house elves can make you something in the kitchen."
I put my hand on his shoulder, "thank you for your concern, Professor," I grinned. "But I'm perfectly fine."
"What class is next?" I asked him curiously.
"Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff sixth years," he stated clearly.
"Mind if I sit in and listen?" I asked watching Hermione slowly clean out the couldron.
"If you wish."
"Not if *I* wish, Severus. If *you* wish. It is your classroom afterall," I smiled.
"So I've been told," he looked up at me with a slight, very slight, smile.
I laughed loudly, "So you do have a sense of humor afterall!"
He didn't say anything but instead glared at Hermione, who instantly looked down and put the couldron back on the table and left hurriedly, forgetting her book.
"Severus, please don't tell me you're cruel to students," I said.
He looked at me surprised, "excuse me?"
I sighed, "Excuse me, Hermione seemed to have forgotten her book." I went to pick up her forgotten book and walked out the door.
Down the hallway, there was no sign of her. What did she do, dissaperate? I thought to myself walking faster down the hallway, making click-clack sounds with my heels.
Up the stairs towards the Great Hall, I saw that frizzy hair signiture standing with two other boys. I slowed my stride and walked directly to her.
"Oh, yes, she's brilliant! But... I think she and Snape have something going on if you know what I mean," she said and giggled. Her back was turned to me and obviously did not know I was coming up right behind her. The two boys however looked up at me coming nearer with their eyes wide.
I stopped behind her and tapped on her shoulder.
"Oh! Ms. Harlow!" she said horrified and embarrased. I pretended I didn't hear anything she said and gave her a smile- she did say I was brilliant after all!
"Hermione, you forgot your book. I expect you'll need it for your other homework tonight," I said and handed her her book.
She took it and smiled nervously, still unsure if I had heard what she said, "thank you." She continued to breathe heavily.
I winked at her, "it's no problem at all. If you need anymore help in potions, don't be afraid to ask. I don't have an office but you can come down to my room in the basement- it's right beside Professor Snape's." I gave her another big smile as well as the other two boys, and then turned and walked away making my way back to the basement. I wasn't sure if they knew where Severus's room was, but I thought it quite funny to say. I sighed, poor girl. I hope I didn't scare her. Honestly, I wasn't upset at all, but it was very amusing.
I entered Severus's classroom smiling widely. He looked up and looked confused, probably wondering why I was smiling so big it looked as if I had been laughing for hours.
"Severus, can I ask you something?" I said sitting back down on his desk. His eyes made sure to keep staring at the wall, this time.
"Yes?" he said and looked at me.
"What was that delectable thing you gave me for breakfast at the hospital wing?" I said as students started piling in.
"What thing?" he asked trying to find out what I was talking about.
I put my hand on his shouder once more and he looked at his students glaring, as if daring them to look our way.
"Oh you know," I said snapping my fingers, "that pastry thing. It had strawberries and syrup on top and jelly insideand some kind of sweet powdery substance."
"Stuffed french toast. The powder was powdered sugar," he said putting away his papers and getting up. I stood up with him as the class continued to file in and put their things in order.
"I wonder if we have them for breakfast everyday," I said.
"It's usually requested," he said without looking me.
"Did you request it for me?" I asked. Without turning around, he pointed his wands at the curtains and closed them, putting the classroom in darkness once more.
"Yes," he said to me quietly.
"Thank you, it was delicious," I said just as quietly and smiled at him.
"You're welcome," he gave a flicker or a smile and then walked around his desk to the front of the class. I walked to the backcorner of the classroom to listen.
"Well, what are you all staring at? Copyyour notes!" Severus said in a tone I havenever heard before. He sounded cruel and intimidating. He did his lecture that lasted only fifteen minutes until the students were instructed to get started on a potion that they would have to finish for homework, the same potion that Hermione had requested my help on. I wondered why a fourth year student was doing sixth year work.
Almost everyone in class was having a hard time with the potion and Severus did not make them feel better about it by continually criticizing their work. I wondered who this Severus was from the Severus I had been speaking to.
Near the end of class, no one was where they should be with their potions and were scowled for it.
"This draught is due tomorrow and worth 20% of our grade," he said as a parting good-bye to his students.
After everyone has left, I appraoched him with a sad look. After seeing me come out of the shadows, he looked sad as well.
"Why must you be so cruel to your students?" I asked politely.
"I'm not their mother, I shall not baby them," he said curtly.
I put my hand on his arm, the same arm I always touch. "You don't talk like that to me," I said.
"You're not a student," he said.
"What if I was? Would you scold me like you do them?" I asked pouting.
"No."
"Why not," I inquired.
"You're the Headmaster's daughter," he said simply.
I dropped my hand and looked down, "oh." So that was why he was being so nice to me, because I was the Headmaster's daughter. I sighed and walked away without saying anything. In this world, in this time, is that all I would ever be? Would I forever live in the shadows of my father, Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts and the greatest wizard of the world?
