Chapter 4 - The First Day, The First Encounter
“Well you think that you can take me on
you must be crazy
there ain’t a single thing you’ve done
that’s gonna faze me
oh but if you wanna have a go
I just wanna let you know...”
- Bryan Adams
After breakfast, I was walking with Harry down to Hagrid’s hut for Care Of Magical Creatures with Skylar stubbornly clinging to my shoulder, refusing to be left behind. Hermione and Ron didn’t have this class with us, because they were pursuing other careers.
“What are you gonna be Harry?”
“An Auror.”
“Wow, that’s pretty advanced stuff there.”
“Yeah, but after the whole Voldemort thing...I dunno. I just want to keep that from happening ever again.”
I gave him a sideways glance.
“I don’t blame you a bit, and I can tell you right now, you’ll accomplish that goal.”
I noticed him give me a weird look.
“Thanks, but...how do you know?”
I smirked and shook my head.
“Look at the evidence. You single handedly beat Voldemort and his death eaters at the age of fifteen. Merlin himself might not’ve been able to do that, and that’s really saying something.”
He looked thoughtful for a minute, then shook his head.
“How are you so sure about all this? There’s no way you could possibly know...is there?”
I shrugged.
“Just trust me on this okay? I have my ways.”
I could tell he was unsatisfied with my answer, but he didn’t ask anymore questions.
We soon arrived at the hut, and I scanned my classmates for familiar faces. I saw very few Gryffindors, and none that I knew. Most of the class was Hufflepuff, with a scattering of Ravenclaws, and two Slytherins.
I smirked when I saw the two of them, immediately recognizing Draco Malfoy and one of his friends. He seemed to sense my stare, because he looked up, directly making eye contact. My smirk grew into a fanged smile, and I knew my eyes shone with a challenge, as they had done on the train.
He smirked and checked me out again with his silver gaze. I raised an eyebrow, and gave him a deceptively uninterested once-over. The truth was, I was very interested in what I saw. His lean, muscular form was clad in a light gray muscle shirt, which showed off his unique eyes as well as his muscles, and black jeans just tight enough to quicken a girl’s breath, finished off with simple, black leather boots. His hair fell across his face just so, in feathery wisps the color of white gold. As I took in more of him, I felt my indifferent mask begin to slip. Luckily, his friend caught my attention.
I slid my gaze from Draco to the other guy. He was nothing special to look at, at least by my standards. He wasn’t bad looking at all, and was tall and lean. He had less muscle than Draco did though, and his hair and eyes were just plain ordinary in color and texture. He looked tarnished standing next to Draco’s luster. He smirked, and licked his lips suggestively. Immediately, my eyes turned cold and narrowed.
Hn, I dare him to make a move! I’ll teach him a lesson so fast...
Thankfully, Hagrid chose this opportune moment to emerge from behind his hut carrying a carton of what appeared to be some kind of red lizards. I eagerly turned my full attention to the reptiles, forgetting about the Slytherins for the moment, and failing to notice the expression on Harry’s face.

What’s going on? Please tell me she’s not checking out that slime ball Malfoy! She wouldn’t, not after all she’s been told about him...would she? Bloody hell! She’s checking out Blaise too? Wait...good, she doesn’t seem to like him...what-hold on! Where are all these thoughts coming from?
My inner tirade came to a sudden halt at the familiar sight of the red lizards Hagrid had brought out.
Oh no, Blast Ended Skrewts...great, here we go again...

“Grr, Blaise, you stupid jerk! What did you have to go and do that for?”
“What did I do?”
I sighed, shaking my head. Blaise could be so dense sometimes.
“Never mind Blaise.”
I stared at the girl, now focused on those slimy little reptiles Hagrid had carried out.
Great, it’s those damned things again.
I focused once more on Shadow.
Shadow...even her name holds a hint of mystery.
I looked her over again, taking in every detail I could. She wore yet another belly baring black muscle tank, this time paired with faded blue jeans with rips in the knees and a worn denim mini vest with the hem and neckline cut away to make a frayed and jagged edge. Her rugged look was completed with fingerless black leather gloves and simple black combat boots. A single chain dangled from her studded belt and a matching studded choker was fastened around her neck. Her only makeup was light gray eyeshadow and basic black liner. He noticed her hair was pulled back in the same style as yesterday, and he took special interest in her piercings. She had replaced the skeleton with a dangling crystal, but otherwise they were the same.
I struggled to pay attention to what Hagrid had just said.
“Hey Blaise, what did he say? I wasn’t paying attention.”
“Oh you were paying attention alright, to Shadow’s perfect, luscious, curvy, - ”
I interrupted with a growl.
“Blaise, I’m warning you...”
I glared at him as he laughed and said
“Alright mate, take it easy. He said to pick a partner and get a Skrewt. Come on, I wanna get a big one-hey! Where do you think you’re gong?”
I ignored Blaise and continued to zero in on my target.

When Hagrid said to pick a partner, it became obvious that Harry was a popular candidate. All the Gryffindors and most of the girls, even those from Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, began to gather ‘round him, inadvertently pushing me out of the way.
I just stood back with my hands in my pockets, grinning. Inside, I was laughing at the sight they made. Skylar just cocked his head to the side, probably wondering what all this human nonsense was about.
Poor Harry was trying to extricate himself from his admirers, evidently having some trouble. His face flushed as he grew increasingly discomposed, as it seemed these people were relentless.
As Hagrid went over to rescue Harry, I caught Draco out of the corner of my eye. It seemed he was making his move.
Oh great, that friend of his is following right behind him too...
I turned to face them and waited. Draco smirked as he came up to me. I ignored the other guy and focused instead on Draco. I put on one of my fang baring grins and waited for him to say something.
“I don’t believe we’ve officially met yet. I’m-”
“I know who you are. Draco Malfoy, the alleged king of Slytherin.”
He arched a brow, and surprise graced his features. He grinned.
“And you are Shadow, mystery woman of Hogwarts.”
Now it was my turn to be surprised, and my grin grew.
“I didn’t know I had a title.”
He chuckled softly, and the sound caused a slight shiver to run through me.
“Neither did I, so I suppose we’re even.”
“Yes, I guess so.”
He gave me a speculating look, as if he were considering something.
“Would you care to be my partner?”
I ignored his friend’s protest and said
“The King of Slytherin wants to partner with a Gryffindor? There’s definitely something wrong with this picture.”
Draco looked taken aback for a minute, then said
“Yes, but I don’t believe you’re pure Gryffindor...you’re too different from them.”
He must have seen my eyes turn to ice because he quickly added
“And I mean that as a compliment.”
I allowed the ice to melt some.
“And what is so bad about Gryffindors?”
“Nothing! er...well...good question.”
“That’s right.”
I let the ice return, and this time it reached my voice as well.
“However, I can tell you exactly what is wrong with most Slytherins. They’re pompous, rich, spoiled brats with bad attitudes and a lot of trash to talk.”
I paused for a moment to watch the anger spreading over his face. He looked like he was about to come back with a retort when I cut him off.
“But, I’m hoping they’re not all like that.”
He seemed to sense a hidden meaning behind my words, because I saw his anger fade, replaced by confusion, then once more with his trademark smirk. I took a closer look and saw that it seemed softer somehow... He interrupted my musings, saying
“You never did answer my question.”
I paused, then gave him a genuine smile.
“Sure.”

I watched as she went to get a Skrewt, reviewing our conversation in my head. Hmm...what is so wrong with Gryffindors?
My musings were interrupted by that irritating friend of mine.
“Just great Malfoy, now who am I gonna partner with?!”
I shrugged and followed Shadow.
“That’s your problem, not mine.”
When I reached Shadow, she was petting one of the lizards, happiness evident on her face. I grimaced when I saw how big it was.
Ugh...did she have to get the biggest of the lot?
I sighed and walked the rest of the way over.
“So what are we supposed to do?”
“take care of it for a day and write a report on it.”
“What!? No way.”
“Draco! What’s the matter with you? It’s cute...”
“Shadow, you know that’s a Blast Ended Skrewt, right?”
“Yeah, I like to call ‘em Ass Blasters though. They’re not so hard to take care of if you know how to handle them, and this one’s really sweet.”
She must have seen the look I gave the thing, because she asked
“You’re not much of an animal person, are you?”
“No, not really. I’ve got a bad history with animals in this class.”
And that’s putting it lightly...
“Then I’ll take care of it and you write up the report. Sound fair?”
I nodded.
Anything’s fair as long as I don’t have to touch that thing.
“Good, now let’s go get one of those glass jars Hagrid’s passing out.”
“Sure, but what for?”
“We’ve got to catch it’s food.”
I gave her a cautious look.
“I’m almost afraid to ask, but what does it eat?”
She laughed.
“Don’t worry, it only eats Fireflies.”
I let out the breath I didn’t even realize I was holding.
Well that’s a relief! At least it’s nothing slimy or disgusting.
She put the Skrewt on her other shoulder, as her hawk seemed to have taken up permanent residence on her right one, and we walked in silence over to where Hagrid was passing out the jars. Shadow took one, and we left again. We wandered over to a tree not far from the class, and she sat under it and I sat beside her. I observed her as she softly stroked the sleeping Skrewt, which seemed not to even notice Skylar.
I had noticed a change come over her once she was around a new animal. She seemed happier...more approachable somehow.
“You really love animals, don’t you?”
She turned toward me, and I almost gasped. Her eyes had changed to a rich, pure blue. They gave me the impression of an innocent, happy little girl.
“Yeah, I do.”
“Just out of curiosity, what career are you pursuing?”
“Dragonrider.”
I was about to reply when Blaise came up to us, seemingly out of nowhere.
“What a coincidence, me too.”
her eyes lost their coloring and returned to ice, as did her voice, and she stood to face him.
“You know, it’s rude to eavesdrop. Who are you anyway?”
“I’m Blaise.”
I glared at him as he tried to bring her hand to his lips for a kiss. I was surprised, however, by her reaction.
I heard her emit something akin to a hiss and saw her hand move in a blur. I was astonished to see a fine line of blood running down Blaise’s face from a barely noticeable scratch.
Skylar let out a shrill warning cry and fluttered his wings, clacking his beak. The Skrewt around her shoulders had awakened and was menacing him with it’s sharp teeth. Blaise fell back in shock and fear.
“You listen, and you listen good ‘cuz I’m only gonna say this once. You ever touch me again, and you can bet anything I’ll fix you good. Now scram!”
Blaise tore off as if the devil was after him. I looked at Shadow with a new respect, and fear too.
Wow, Shadow doesn’t play around. I almost feel sorry for Blaise, even though he deserved it...
I took a cautious step forward, not entirely certain it was safe yet.
“Shadow?”
“I’m fine Draco, but I’ve just had about all I can take of Blaise. He’s been eyeballin’ me since he saw me on the train, and I’m getting sick of it.”
She turned to face me, and what I saw in her eyes made my blood run cold.
“Tell him that if he’s smart he’ll stay as far away from me as possible.”
I stood up and nodded as she soothed the aggravated animals. Attempting to lighten the mood, I said
“I’d hate to imagine what you’d do to me if I tried to kiss you.”
She rolled her eyes and grinned.
“I’m in no mood for jokes right now Draco.”
I smirked, leaning against the tree just so to flatter my figure.
“Or are you just afraid that I might charm you with my silver tongue?”
She laughed, and said
“At the rate you’re going, your tongue will soon be platinum, not silver.”
I noticed her eye moving over my body as she said this. When we made eye contact again, I winked roguishly, and was rewarded with another laugh.
“Stop it you villain! I’m single and I like it that way.”
