Ch. 4: That Which Is Hidden Will Always Reveal Itself.
The doors opened and Harry blinked, Lucius was curled up in the strangers lap, purring as his hair was stroked. By the time that they sat down he had finally had enough.
“Alright, that’s it! What is going on here?” Harry wondered, briefly, if perhaps the Death Eaters had captured him and tortured him to insanity. It was becoming increasingly harder to not believe that he was in Saint Mungo’s alongside the Longbottoms.
The stranger only chuckled and handed him a tumbler of firewhiskey, “I have the feeling you’ll need it,”
Harry drank it down quickly and Severus sighed, “No, don’t check it for poisons or anything!”
“Poison!” Harry squeaked, though if you asked him later he would tell you it was a very calm question.
“Hush, like I’d let them poison you,” Draco said, rolling his eyes and pulling Harry into his lap.
“Be quiet Potter, and listen!” Severus snapped, on edge and untrusting of how Harry would react to the truth. He sighed at Draco’s hiss even as Tom began.
“I am Tom Riddle-” Tom was abruptly cut off from Harry moving, nearly too fast to be seen, to the door trying desperately to open it. Fear and betrayal ran off his body in waves powerful enough that even Draco hesitated to go to him. Draco’s need, however, to care for and protect his mate carried him forward to wrap Harry in his arms and coo.
“No, no no no no, no!” Harry screamed.
With a look between them – Severus’s a deep scowling “I told you so”- the trio stood and went over after Lucius grabbed a pensieve. As Tom and Severus added memories to it Lucius sighed.
“Maybe we should have just done this at first,” He glanced over to his son and distraught mate, “Might have been easier…”
At Draco’s urging – alright, forcing- Harry’s head was dipped in and the stream of memories began.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, 33 years ago (Snape’s 5th Year - beginning)
The Dungeons looked just as damp and dreary as they were in the future, Harry noticed dimly as he felt calm fill him as he straightened up, used to the odd almost out of body experience of being in another’s memories. He watched as a young, and frankly nerdy looking, Severus Snape hurried down the hall with… His mum?
“What is going on?” Harry asked only to be hushed and told to look.
“Lily?” Young Severus asked, “what is going on?”
“Severus, you have to promise me you’ll tell nobody,” Lily said, looking around as if expecting spies to surround them in the empty corridor.
“Who am I going to tell? I only ever hang out with you and those blasted marauders!”
Lily only slightly relaxed and nodded, “Well it’s just… You know how Dumbledore has been talking to James and me about this whole Voldemort person? I… I found this Diary and I don’t think that Dumbledore is being at all… honest.”
“Come on now Lily! It’s Dumbledore, and you’ve read the papers and know what that psyco believes in-”
“That’s just it! This Diary is… HIS,”
“What?! Lily are you insane?!”
“Severus just read this!” Lily shoved a tattered old book at Severus, flipping through the pages and letting him read them. At the end they were both looking around, wondering if the walls could hear them.
“Lily… If this is true… We’re not the only ones that Dumbledore has been lying to,” Severus still seemed a bit unconvinced,
“Look, it has to be true, James… James is sure,” Lily whispered, and Severus gasped.
Harry felt lost. From the way that his mother said it, it was as if his father was… Well he wasn’t sure but from Snape’s reaction it couldn’t be anything good. However his attempts at questioning the man were once again hushed as the scene changed.
Riddle Manor, two years later (Snape’s 7th year – end)
“Albus, stop this monstrosity!” Tom Riddle yelled, “I tire of this game, this war, which you’ve created, it is helping no one!” Around the young – and admitably hot, Harry noticed with a slight blush- man stood several cloaked figures. The animosity coming from them a nearly palpable thing, but oddly, it didn’t seem evil to Harry, more like they were fed up and at their wits end.
“No, Tom, I can’t do that, this is for the greater good,” Albus said with that damning twinkle in his eye. Though, Harry supposed, it could have just been an errant spark in the fire through which the duo were arguing. Finally Albus disappeared and Tom ran a frustrated and through his thick and dark, glossy, hair.
“Malfoy!”
“Yes, sire?”
“Your son and his friends? Are you sure they are not under that baboon’s thumb?”
“Yes sire,” He said, “They will be here in less than a week when school lets out, according to the muggleborn girl they have enough evidence that would bring everyone in the wizarding world to our side by opening their eyes to that bastard’s ways,”
“Good, good. When the train arrives simply apparate them here, we don’t want any chance of that fool getting his hands on them. Especially if he knows,”
“Of course,”
Harry was ripped out of the pencieve by Draco’s gentle hands and he relaxed against his mate, looking at the three around him.
“Now, Potter, will you actually listen?” Snape sneered.
Harry merely nodded, head wrapping around what he had seen and heard from undoubtedly real memories. They hadn’t had the odd foggy quality that slughorn’s had had over the summer. One thing stood out to him most though and he had to ask, “Why?”
Tom gave a bittersweet smile, “Defeating Grindlewald wasn’t enough. Not nearly enough, for Albus. Other than that, your guess is just as good as mine,” He rose to his feet, gesturing for everybody to follow him.
“I’ll start at the beginning… Or at least, your, beginning in this whole sordid tale,” Tom once again gave the bitter smile, reaching for his own tumbler of firewhiskey
“After that night Dumbledore renewed his attempts to sway your parents, and severus, and lucius, and well everyone, back to his side. When they left, and he knew he had failed, he kidnapped them – as far as we know they never got on the train,”
“That night,” Tom stopped, taking a deep breath, pulling his wand out and putting it to his temple. Draco had to suppress the need to bat at the silvery blue ribbon as it danced at the end of Tom’s wand. His father, however, didn’t.
“Lucius!” Severus snapped, but one half of his mouth quirked up so quickly that Harry wasn’t entirely sure he had seen it in the first place. Once again they all went into the memory. Harry tried to steel himself for what he might see, his hand gripped Draco’s in what he knew had to be a painful tightness. Still he wasn’t sure that anything, anyone, even his mate, could help him in what he was about to see.
Godric’s Hollow, 17 years ago.
Several heavily cloaked figure appeared at the doorway of the fidelus charmed house, or in better, more fit terms, prison, of James and Lily Potter. Harry knew who was under there, knew that it wasn’t what he had thought, but still he was surprised when his father opened the door, him on his lap, to give a releaved shout.
“Tom, Severus, Lucius! Thank merlin!” James stepped out of the way, quickly allowing them in.
Once everyone was seated around the small, and admitably cozy, living room it seemed as though no one knew what to say. An over whelming sense of pure catharsis filled the room and for several minutes everyone just seemed to bask until Severus coughed, gently reminding Tom that they didn’t have all the time in the world to spend here!
“Right,” Tom sighed
“How did you guys find us?” Lily finally asked.
Another moment of silence and then a heavy sigh, “I’ve convinced Dumbledore that I’m on his side,”
“Severus! How? Why?” James asked, startled, Dumbledore may be a sadistic fool but he wasn’t stupid and it certainly wasn’t easy to gain his trust. James would know, he had been trying for months now to convince Dumbledore of his –false- loyalties to the light. Hoping that in doing so he could at least get Lily and Harry out and to safety. Every time he was shot down, Dumbledore seeing right through his charade with well practiced ease.
“The how isn’t important right now, and you damn well know why!” Severus said angrily, a soothing arm joining Tom’s around Lucius’s quivering frame. When James went to press, Lily stopped him with a look. She already had a feeling what it was, and none of their three friends were doing anything to discourage her line of thinking. Suddenly a small chiming sound filled the room and Harry started to scream bloody murder. Lily went pale as she took him to his room, motioning for Severus and Lucius to follow her.
17 year old Harry made a move to follow them, wanting to see more of what happened for him, but Draco wrapped his arms around him forcing him to stay and watch as Dumbledore burst the front door in. The rich mahogany wood splintering with ease and falling like shattered glass all through the entry way. James was up and facing the enraged Dumbledore, Tom at his side.
“How did you get in here Tom?” For all his anger the words were almost melodic and calming.
Tom simply sneered before saying, “This ends here, old man,”
Harry shot a look and present day Tom, his eyes filled with ‘you have got to be kidding me?’
A scream from upstairs however had James gesturing for Tom to go. His eyes saying it all, ‘it’s your Mate, I understand,”
Harry watched, with an almost tunneled vision as his Father tried desperately to give the people upstairs time to protect and save themselves. Finally Dumbledore had had enough.
“Stop! This is the last time I will offer you, James, join me and the light,”
In that moment Harry saw the look in his dad’s eyes, the knowledge and settlement within him. He knew what he was about to say, and the consequences, he watched as his Dad refused and Dumbledore, the leader of the light, killed him without blinking. The shocking green of the Avada Kedevra spell the last thing that he saw in real detail. He saw as the green tongues caressed around his father’s body, seeming to wrap him in its insidious embrace as though he were its lover.
Harry only dimly remembered the memories that followed: his mother trying to push him into the fire while it was still green but Dumbledore bursting in in time to put it out, Severus coming back later, the perfect spy, and how he tried to get Dumbledore to allow him to keep Harry. The last one however was very short, and Harry found that he couldn’t look away.
#5 Privet Drive, some months later.
A shaky legged Draco stumbled around the living room of one #5 Privet Drive, looking with still Baby Blue eyes at the dark haired baby who was just learning to crawl. On the couch sat the Squib, Ms. Figg, was talking with a hassled looking Lucius.
Harry ignored them, focusing instead on how Draco got down from his shaky legs to crawl over to Harry and seemed like he was trying to teach him, of all things, to crawl. As the two infants squeed over Harry finally accomplishing the fact he heard Ms. Figg’s say, “That the first I’ve ever seen him smile,”
