Chapter Four: Explanations
Sun streamed through the open window illuminating the couple curled up on the bed, wrapped in each other’s arms. Hermione stirred from her sleep and couldn’t help but feel content. Who ever had their arms around her made her feel safe.
‘Wait.. arms?’ Hermione’s eyes snapped open and she was faced with the sight of Draco Malfoy’s face. She almost let out a scream but quickly muffled it.
What had they done? More so why had they done it?
Hermione started to pull away from him but froze. She was naked. Hermione glanced down to see the sheet barely covering his front, a thigh sticking out of the side.
‘Oh Merlin.’
The sound of a clearing throat came from behind her. Hermione whipped around to face the noise and saw a painting trying to get her attention. It was the lady from their portrait hole painting.
“Sorry to disturb you but,” the paintings eyes flickered down to Hermione’s uncovered chest.
“Oh! Sorry,” Hermione pulled the sheet up around her chest, trying to regain some modesty.
“There’s, um, two young men at the entrance demanding to see you,” If paintings could blush, she was.
“Fuck. Tell them to give me a few minutes,” Hermione quickly gathered the sheet around her and started to move for the door.
The painting gasped. Hermione looked to where she was looking to see a fully naked Draco Malfoy. He had a broad chiseled chest, defined abs, and a rather large hard on. Hermione had read about how guys usually woke up with an erection but she never thought it would be that hard. Her breath shuddered as a tingling erupted between her legs.
A banging from downstairs broke the both of them out of their trance. The portrait lady ran out of the painting and Hermione ran to her room. Hermione threw on some underwear, a baggy t-shirt and some shorts. She was about to leave the room when she saw the hickies on her neck. A growl of frustration came from her throat and she cast a concealment charm over them.
The banging echoed again and Hermione quickly ran to get it.
“Geez guys, don’t put a hole in the painting,” Hermione said as she opened the portrait hole.
“Sorry, we were just worried,” Harry said.
“Why weren’t you at breakfast?” Ron asked.
“Breakfast? Wait, what time is it?” Hermione asked shocked that she would have slept so late.
“11am. You’re usually such an early bird we knew something must have been wrong. Did Malfoy do something to you?” Harry asked concerned as his eyes flickered up at the Head Boys door.
“No, no it’s just I was kept up late last night..” Before Hermione could finish a stark naked Draco Malfoy came out of the room.
“Hey babe, where’d the sheet go?”
Hermione let out a squeal and her friends let out disgusted groans.
“Merlin Malfoy put some clothes on!” Ron said covering his eyes.
“It’s my common room,” Malfoy smirked.
“No it’s not, it’s the both of ours. Now go put some clothes on, you’re entertainment from last night already left with your sheet,” Hermione scowled. ‘Please don’t say it was me, please, please, please.’
Draco gave her a confused look but turned around and went back into his room.
“No silencing charm?” Harry asked sympathetically.
“Yeah. I think they were at it into the early hours of the morning,” Hermione said shyly.
“You know you are welcome back at the Gryffindor dorms at any time,” Ron put a supportive hand on her shoulder and smiled at her.
Hermione tried to return the smile with the same enthusiasm. Ron had had a crush on her for a while now but Hermione just didn’t see him in that capacity. All of his advances had always made her feel awkward but she had always dismissed it. He would get over it eventually.
“Did you want to hang out today or catch up on your sleep?” Harry asked.
“I’ll be by later today; I have to go see Dumbledore about some head business.
“Ok and you know we’re here for you if Malfoy tries anything,” Ron said squeezing her shoulder.
“Thanks. You guys are the best friends a girl can have,” Hermione smiled and gave each of them a hug.
They left the common room and Hermione let out a sigh of relief. Now to her next problem. Hermione looked up at Draco’s door to see it cracked open. She walked up to the door and pushed it open, knocking slightly.
“Malfoy?” Hermione edged into the room.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate for you to be calling me that now, considering the circumstances,” He said from the bed, in his hands was a piece of white parchment.
“What do you mean?”
Draco handed the paper out to her but kept his eyes on the floor. Hermione took the paper and kept her eyes on him. Why was he acting so strange? She looked down at the paper and gasped. It was a marriage certificate for her and Draco. It was dated from last night and off to the side was a moving image of her and Draco in a lip lock and rose petals cascading around them. Hermione plunked down on the bed.
“How can this have happened?” Draco mumbled.
Hermione swallowed. She knew she had to tell him it was all because of a spell, but how?
“Maybe we can get it annulled?” Hermione suggested.
“We can’t. That’s a marriage contract that’s been in my family for generations. It’s legally and magically binding. There are only two ways to legally break it. One is by infidelity but the magic part won’t let that happen. It’s designed to stop wandering in arranged marriages, particularly into their later years when the spark may not have developed. The second is if the woman cannot provide a male heir but it cannot be from lack of trying. Again the magic detects if we have really put in the effort to get pregnant,” Draco explained.
“Oh,” Hermione said almost silently. “Look Malfoy I have something to tell you.”
He looked up at her for the first time.
“What happened last night was because of a spell..”
“You mean you did this?!” Draco exploded.
Hermione leaned away from him as he looked angrily down at her. Her mother had told her that some men’s reactions were like this.
“Not purposely! And technically it’s your fault, you stole my skin!” Hermione stated back at him. “Why didn’t you do some research first? It is because of you that we are stuck like this; do not dare try to blame me! You stole my seal skin and so you triggered the spell!”
Draco looked at her confused.
Hermione ran a hand through her hair. “I’m not a muggle. I am a magical creature called a Selkie, the seal cousin to Mermaids. I take the form of a seal in the water but have the ability to shed my skin and walk on land.”
Draco tried to interrupt but she shushed him with her finger. A flash from the night before entered both their minds. Draco about to protest but Hermione told him to just watch.
“Please let me speak. When we shed our skin we have to keep it safe. If it is stolen we become entangled with the thief’s will. This only ever happens to female Selkies because males are better at hiding their skins and have the power to control or influence people. Last night you stole my skin. Being of the opposite sex it triggered the Selkie’s spell. Part of the spell is that we become one in married bliss. We had no control over our actions last night. As soon as you took the skin from my trunk the spell took a hold on you. I could feel the pull but the full effect didn’t happen to me until you put us in an intimate position. That usually happens when the Selkie confronts the thief.” Hermione was silent after she explained this.
“You said part of the spell was that we get married, what’s the other part?” Draco asked quietly, not sure if he wanted to know the answer. He knew they had unprotected sex last night but he was sure she would have been on some sort of contraceptive potion.
“That we become one in physical bliss. The result of which is a child,” Hermione looked away from him.
“But we can just use a spell to stop that, or a potion,” Draco said hopefully.
Hermione shook her head letting a tear escape. “I was on a contraception potion but the spell overrides the contraception methods and any abortion methods we might seek.”
Draco looked deflated but suddenly his head perked up. He walked over to his cupboard and pulled out a box. Draco stood there for a second, he could feel the magic inside and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to part with it.
“What if I gave you your skin back?”
“What’s done is done. For the entirety of this pregnancy we will feel a connection. It’s basically residual magic from the spell. Some Selkies are able to overpower it and if given their skin back, will return to the sea. Our situation is different because of the marriage certificate.”
“What did your parents do? I assume that you get your Selkie blood from your mother,” Draco said facing her, the box still in his hands.
“My father, being a muggle, was more influenced by the residual magic than you are. You’re used to magic whereas he was not. Dad kept mums skin hidden from her until I was a few months old. By then the magic had worn off and despite the feelings he had developed for mum he was willing to let her go back to the sea. Mum decided to stay with dad because if she returned to the sea she wouldn’t be able to come back on land for seven years. It’s the price we pay for letting our skin be stolen. She wanted to raise her pup with dad. Luckily dad was a carrier of the magical gene so I was gifted with the ability to do magic. Being able to come here has really helped me learn about my heritage, it would have been a lot harder if I have been raised in a solely muggle environment.”
Draco came over to the bed and sat next to her. He played with the edges of the box. Hermione’s hands itched to snatch it out of his hands.
“Here,” Draco said as he handed the box back to her. “I don’t want you to be tied to my will. If we are truly stuck like this I’d rather you be my equal, not my slave.”
Hermione took the box from him. “Thank you.”
She opened the box to reveal her seal skin. Hermione reached inside and took it out of the box, checking for tears. The colouring of each Selkies skin differed. Hermione’s was much like a Weddell seal’s. The back of the skin was a dark brown colour which slowly faded into a light brown/grey underside which was speckled with light cream markings.
“It’s beautiful,” Draco muttered.
“Thankyou,” Hermione smiled up at him. “I got the spots from mum.”
Draco looked over at her and his eyes flickered to her stomach. “Will our baby be a Selkie?”
Hermione looked at him and followed his gaze. “Yes I imagine so. He or she will appear like me.”
Draco looked confused again.
“Mum is a full Selkie so she appears as a full seal in the water. Me being a half, I appear half human and half seal. Any Selkie pups I have will look like me in their seal form.”
A silence drifted over the couple. Draco continued to stare at her stomach, refusing to believe that in nine months he would be a father. Hermione ran her hands over her skin, neatly folding it and putting it back in the box.
“What now?” Draco asked.
“I think we should tell Dumbledore. Maybe we can somehow conceal this without revealing my secret to the whole school,” Hermione bit her lip. How were Harry and Ron going to take this?
Draco nodded and went into the bathroom, locking the door behind him. Hermione heard the water start to run followed by a series of bangs. She assumed he was bashing the wall. Hermione quickly got dressed, locked her seal skin away and waited for Draco in the common room. A book sat in her lap, forgotten as she drew circles on her stomach.
“I’m sorry to have to bring you into the world like this,” Hermione said to her stomach. “But what’s done is done and I know you will be the most adorable little pup in the entire world.”
“I’m sorry,” a voice said behind her making her jump. “I’m sorry for taking your skin. I was just so obsessed in finding out what you were hiding. Then I saw you in the lake that night and I just had to know. You have no idea how many tries it took me to get that trunk unlocked.”
Hermione smiled.
“You really are a powerful witch,” Draco said as he walked in front of her. “Shall we go?”
Hermione nodded and together they made their way up to Dumbledore’s office. They waited nervously outside his door until the previous appointment was finished. The doors opened to reveal the Headmaster escorting a first year to the stairs.
“And remember, life is like a box of Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans. You never know what flavour you’ll get next just like you never know what is next for you just around the corner of life.”
“Thank you Headmaster,” the boy squeaked and descended the stairs.
Dumbledore turned and spread his arms wide. “Mrs Malfoy, Mr Malfoy, shall we proceed?”
Both the students’ jaws dropped.
“How.. How’d you..?” Hermione stammered.
“You forget Mrs Malfoy that although I am old, I am not senile,” Dumbledore smiled, a twinkle in his eye. Dumbledore ushered them into his office and closed the door. Spells and charms of silencing and secrets went up around the room. Hermione looked quizzically at the old man. “I felt the need for absolute reassurances that whatever is said in this meeting stays in this meeting.”
“Thank you Headmaster,” Hermione smiled.
Dumbledore directed them to the lounges in front of his desk.
“Mr Malfoy, may I please see the marriage certificate?” Dumbledore held out his hand.
Draco handed the parchment over and watched the Headmaster carefully.
“Hmm. It is as you both feared. There is no legal or magical way to get this undone. The contract is binding and unless either one of the conditions comes to pass; there is nothing I can do to help you in this situation. Hermione, if you wish to remain a Granger during the rest of the school year, it can be done. However after you leave here you will be known as a Malfoy.”
“Are you absolutely sure there is nothing to be done? My parents will not stand for this. They will never allow Hermione or our child to be a part of the Malfoy line, despite being bound by marriage. They will never accept that there is a mud..muggle-born in the family,” Draco caught his slip but he saw the look Hermione gave him and knew she had heard it.
“A child? I believe you both go married last night. How do you know you have a child on the way?” Dumbledore asked, looking over his spectacles.
Hermione took a breath and explained the situations like she had to Draco. Although she had a sneaking suspicion that the Headmaster already knew what she was.
“The spell wouldn’t have lifted until we had conceived a child and I can assure you Headmaster that I am completely clear headed right now,” Hermione sent a glare towards Draco.
“I see,” Dumbledore rested his chin on his hands. “I will inform the staff of your predicament, they will need to be informed of what you are Ms Granger but they will be confined to secrecy. In the meantime I will consult with a Selkie expert on how best to handle the situation. We still have quite a few months before you start showing, and the school robes will hide it for a while longer. It is up to you who you choose to tell now but do not wait too long. Close friends will figure it out quicker than strangers.”
“Thank you Headmaster,” Hermione and Draco echoed.
“I will send you an owl when everything is sorted,” Dumbledore waved his hand at the door and it opened.
The couple exited his office and stood at the bottom of the stairs for a while.
“I need some time alone,” Hermione mumbled and started to walk away.
“Wait! About what I said in there,” Draco started but stopped as Hermione faced him.
“No it’s ok. I get it. Even after what this situation is putting us through you are still the pompous, pureblood arse I always thought you were. I was stupid to even consider that my carrying your child would change your outlook,” Hermione shot him one last glare and stormed off.
Draco stood there stunned. He needed someone to talk to, get his mind off of her. Blaise would know what to say. Draco made a beeline for the dungeons.
****
Hermione sat down by the lake on a rock overhang, her feet just dangling in the water. A mermaid had come up to see if she would be joining them but Hermione just shook her head. The mermaid looked unsympathetically at Hermione as a tear dropped into the water. Being part fish made them cold like the water they dwelled in. Being able to keep in touch with the land Selkie’s had a much nicer disposition.
“Go away you slimy fish, you’re not helping,” a woman’s voice said as she sat beside Hermione, waving her hands at the mermaid.
“Hi mum,” Hermione sniffed and rested her head on the older woman’s shoulder.
“Oh sweety,” she put her arm around Hermione and pulled her close. “Dumbledore told me what happened. I don’t blame you. You did everything right.”
More tears spilled down her face and sobs racked her body. Emer Granger held her daughter close and sang a song in the Selkie tongue. Hermione always felt better when her mother sang.
“What am I going to do mum? I’m too young to have a pup,” Hermione said sadly.
“Sweetheart you are only too young by human standards. As soon as a Selkie is of breeding age she is required to find a mate and have pups,” Emer ran her fingers through Hermione’s hair. “Come; let us find some things for your hair.”
Together they walked around the edge of the lake picking up shells.
“Oh look! That is the perfect spot,” Emer started wading into the water out to a rock sticking out of the water. Hermione followed and together they sat on the rock combing out each other’s hair with their fingers.
Emer used her nails to puncture the shells with tiny holes so they could be threaded onto the hair. While she did that Hermione started to braid her mother’s hair and thread the first of the shells into it. When Hermione was done it was her turn. Emer started to braid Hermione’s hair with the shells and she pulled out some strips of fabric from her pocket to weave in as well.
“Beautiful,” Emer said and turned Hermione towards her. “You are a strong, beautiful young woman Hermione. Being a Selkie is both a gift and a curse. Tell me about this Draco. I know you’ve mentioned him in the past.”
“He’s a pompous, arrogant, snivelling little ferret. I was stupid to think that the spell would have some kind of good effect on him. He seems to have accepted the fact that we are stuck being married to each other but his old prejudices about my blood are still there. It hurts because this child will be part his. I don’t expect him to love me or like me but I just wish he would let that go because in the end it will only end up hurting our child. I was hoping that after school I would visit the sea for a while but now that I am tied to him I can’t return for seven years. Maybe I should just take the pup to the sea and never return,” Hermione said looking out over the lake.
Emer’s head shot up to look at her daughter. “Hermione!”
“What? It’s not like the pup is ever going to know what it feels like to have a family. His family is pureblood. They won’t accept me nor the pup despite being married to their son. At least I know in a Selkie community pup will know what it is to be loved,” Hermione said sadly.
“Would you really do that? Even when you have me and your father, your friends?”
“They won’t understand mum! As soon as I tell them what I am they’ll freak and think I’ve betrayed them by keeping it a secret. Oh Merlin, Ron! He will never forgive me,” Hermione put her face in her hands.
“They will honey and if they don’t then they don’t deserve your friendship. Your secret is a part of you that should not affect their decision to be friends with you. It was not just your secret but one that affected me and your father. If you explain that to them I’m sure they will understand,” Emer brushed a strand of hair out of Hermione’s face.
“But they won’t understand the situation with Malfoy. They won’t accept that I’m pregnant with his child.”
“The sooner you tell them the better, that way they have more time to come to terms with the situation before pup is born. Please just promise me you won’t do anything rash,” Emer lifted Hermione’s face, “Like returning to the sea. Stay on land for your pregnancy and let things work out.”
“Ok mum. I promise,” Hermione smiled at her mum. She always knew how to make her feel better.
“Walk me back to Dumbledore’s office?” Mother and daughter linked arms and strolled back up to the castle and to outside Dumbledore’s office. “Good luck honey and remember you can owl me at anytime. Oh before I go, take this. It is a binding potion to protect secrets.”
Emer handed Hermione a vile of blue liquid.
“Always handy for a Selkie,” Emer smile.
“Thank you mum,” Hermione smiled.
They hugged goodbye and Hermione wandered the corridors back to her dormitory.

AN: Originally I wrote this and the next chapter as one but it got so long it was daunting. I decided to split it for my sanity’s sake.
I chose the name Emer from an Irish mythology story about a woman who had six gifts by which women were judged: beauty, voice, sweet speech, needlework, wisdom and chastity. I wanted a name for her from around the region that the Selkie mythology comes from.
What is now chapter 5 is being edited as we speak. How will Harry and Ron feel when Hermione reveals her secret?
