“Come on, Albus, please!” the small pale boy begged just out of sight of the Fat Lady. “They’ll break my wand if I don’t do it and I can’t write to Mother and Father that I broke my wand! It was Draco’s wand! They’ll kill me!”
“Calm down, Scorpius,” Albus Severus Potter hissed as he glanced back down the hall to make sure the Fat Lady was still sleeping in her frame. Once he was satisfied he turned back to his friend. “How will they even know if you won’t go? It’s not like they’ll be able to follow you,” he pointed out.
Scorpius pulled out a silver snake ornament. “I’m to leave this there and then the older kids’ll count how many are there in the morning while everyone’s at breakfast,” he explained. “If mine’s not there they’ll start breaking things. They’ve already thrown all my things ‘round the dorm twice and broken the lock on my trunk. They said my wand’s next.”
Al sighed some. “I don’t understand why they’re even doing this but alright. Dad’s been in the Forest a dozen times and he’s still around.”
Scorpius glared slightly. “Yeah well when your Dad’s Harry Potter a little Forest filled with nasties is hardly anything to worry about,” Scorpius said before taking his friend’s sleeve in hand and started dragging him through the halls. If he didn’t Albus was likely to get lost. He still hadn’t quite managed to get a hang of all the changing staircases and doors yet. Luckily, Scorpius was much less directionally challenged (even in a school that was constantly changing) and often led the way.
That was how they’d first met after all. Albus had gotten hopelessly lost on the fourth floor corridor while trying to get to the dungeons for potions. Somehow, despite always heading down the stairs, he never seemed to actually get downstairs. He’d kept going through a moving staircase that would spit him out right where he began. Scorpius had found him cursing up a storm in frustration and assisted him in getting to where he had to go.
“Speaking of my Dad, he get’s wind of this and he’ll ground me for weeks, ya know,” Albus said as he allowed his friend to dictate their path.
“Yeah, well that’s nothing compared to what my Dad’ll do if I write and tell them I broke Draco’s wand,” Scorpius retorted.
After a short detour around Peeves, they were out of the castle and carefully making their way across the grounds to get to the forest. Albus made certain that they were staying well away from Hagrid’s hut. That would be a disaster and a half. Albus would rather not see that disappointed look on the kind half-giant’s face. The two first years hesitated at the tree line before Scorpius reluctantly took a few steps in. Both boys sighed some when nothing terrible had happened instantly.
“What’re we so nervous for?” Albus asked with a slight laugh. “Not like anything’s gonna jump us right away!” he said slipping into the dark forest with his friend.
Scorpius shook his head some before running a hand through his slick hair nervously. “Nothing’s gonna happen,” he agreed. “But still, let’s hurry this up, yeah?” he suggested as he pulled out a piece of parchment that had a hastily scribbled map on it.
“That tell us where we have to go?” Albus asked, moving closer to look at it better. Scorpius nodded and pulled out the wand that had once belonged to his much older brother. Albus pulled out his own phoenix feather wand and they both turned to face deeper into the forest.
They hesitated again before laughing a little from the nerves of deliberately going deeper into a place with monsters in it. They were just about to take a step when a hand landed on each of their shoulders. They screamed and whipped around instantly, wands pointing at what was behind them only to see James standing there. The elder Potter quickly slapped his hands over the first years’ mouths. “What are you two doing out here?” he demanded.
Finally realizing who it was, Albus and Scorpius relaxed a bit and lowered their wands. Albus glanced between his friend and brother before sighing a little. “If Scorpius doesn’t put this thing on a tree in the forest his house is gonna break his wand,” he explained.
James didn’t look impressed. “There is no way you two are going into this forest anymore than you already have,” he stated firmly. “We’re going back to our dorms before Dad finds out we’re out of bed.”
Scorpius scowled. “Fine! You go, but I have to do this. They’ve already broken some of my things so I know they’ll break my wand if they want to.”
James sighed and reached out a hand to catch the smaller boy before he could walk any further into the forest. “Hold on now, why don’t you just tell one of the teachers about this?” he asked. “They won’t let the other Slytherin’s break your wand.”
Scorpius gave a humorless laugh. “Right, and get a reputation of being a snitch. You want my next seven years to be hell, don’t you?” he demanded in annoyance. “My house’ll kill me.”
James thought about that for a moment before nodding a bit in agreement. “Alright fine, just how far in the forest is this place?” he asked turning his eyes to the near pitch black of the forest ahead of them.
“Not too far. You have to be able to get in and get back out before anyone notices we’re gone after all,” Scorpius said holding up the parchment with the directions on it.
James regarded Scorpius for a minute before glancing at Albus’ determined look and then sighed. “Alright, I guess if I can’t stop you I might as well go with you,” he said. “Least that way you two can’t get in too much trouble. Let’s go. Sooner we get this over with less likely something’ll happen.”
Scorpius looked mildly surprised as James took the map and lit the end of his wand before leading the way. “Why are you helping me?” Scorpius asked as he hurried to keep up. He could understand Albus. He was Scorpius’ best friend. But his brother most certainly was not.
“Because if something happens to Al, Dad’ll kill me. Plus I can’t just let a first year wander into the forest all by himself. And it looks like you’ll try it if I take Al back,” James explained though he didn’t look all that happy about it.
After that, the three boys fell into silence. None of them were remotely relaxed though. Every tiny rustle of leaves made them jump and it was clear that no matter how James pretended otherwise he wasn’t any less scared of the forest than the first years were.
Slowly, as nothing happened for minutes and then half an hour and then an hour, the boys relaxed some though any large noises still made them jump. All three of them had their wands lit and were concentrating most of their attention on following the trail. James stopped for a minute beside a large rock that had an impact crack right in the middle from where it looked like something had rammed into it hard. “I think we turn down here,” James said softly, pointing to a small path that broke off right beside the rock and led down a steep hill. Nearby they could hear water roaring slightly, as if they were near white water of some sort.
“Great,” Albus muttered glancing around. “This place is giving me the creeps,” he said as they broke off onto the smaller path.
“It’s just a normal forest, Al,” Scorpius muttered, trying to sound annoyed but not quite managing it. Though nothing had happened there was a very eerie atmosphere to the place that made just walking seem like they were making far too much noise and bringing attention to themselves despite the noise they were making easily being covered by the sound of water.
The trio carefully made their way down the hill and hesitated at the bottom at what they saw. It was a tiny valley with a near cliff forming the other side only a few hundred yards away. The valley was mostly cleared area save for a large tree with hundreds of little silver snake ornaments hanging from the branches and a pond off to one side that was fed from where water fell over the edge of the cliff. The waterfall kicked up a fair amount of mist, which bounced the moonlight back up, making the whole strange little area seem to glow slightly. The light bounced even more off the silver ornaments in the tree, making it almost sparkle if one didn’t look close enough at it.
“Okay, now this is creepy,” Scorpius muttered glancing around. The place didn’t seem entirely natural.
“But pretty,” Albus commented, eyes glancing up at the clear view of the moon and stars through the forest canopy.
“Let’s just leave the thing and go,” James suggested, not lowering his wand. The hairs on the back of his neck were standing up and he just wanted to get out of there as fast as possible.
Scorpius nodded and pulled out the small ornament he’d been given. Now seeing how many there were in the tree he had to wonder if his housemates were telling the truth about coming back out and counting them. It didn’t seem like it’d be an easy job to do. Ignoring the slight annoyance he felt at his house, Scorpius found a string and tied it to the little loop that was attached to the coils of the snake.
He was just beginning to approach the tree when Albus grabbed his arm. “What was that?” he asked looking around frantically.
“I didn’t hear anything,” Scorpius said though he began to look around as well.
The three boys were still for several minutes before James sighed. “It was nothing just hurry up,” he urged.
Again Scorpius nodded and started for the tree. Just then the sound of a low hiss filled the air and all three boys froze where they were. Two pairs of green eyes and one grey darted around the valley looking for the source of the hiss. “O-okay, can we get out of here now?” Albus asked edging backwards.
Before anyone could answer him another, louder, hiss followed by a sputter made them all jump. “Over there,” James said pointing to a small cave they’d overlooked earlier. It was tucked near the end of the valley where the roots of the trees at the top of the cliff were hanging down almost like a curtain -though they didn’t block off all of the entrance.
There was more hissing and sputtering and Scorpius dropped the ornament before quickly backing up to where the Potter brothers were standing. “Look!” Albus said pointing to the ground. All three of them looked down and saw countless serpents of all types slithering across the ground, apparently originating from every tiny crack around the valley. Occasionally one or two would hiss at the boys, who were already backing up.
“There’s something moving in there,” Scorpius said, eyes riveted to the cave again. The Potter Brothers looked up to see that there was clearly something making the shadows of the cave shift. A thin, pale, surprisingly human hand with long slightly ragged nails grabbed the side of the cave before a large coil of white scales slipped too close to the light where the boys could see it. It was far larger than any snake the boys had seen before, at least as thick around as they were.
A loud hiss from the cave and all the serpents stopped where they were and reared back to show their fangs. The boys jumped and ran as the snakes hissed almost as one unit. The hissing continued even as the boys scrambled up the hill and bolted back down the pathway towards the exit of the Forbidden Forest.
