Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: First off I want to say sorry for taking so long with this chapter. I had it all written out and thought I would just proofread it for mistakes but then decided I wanted to go a whole other way with it. So there won’t be any Hermione/Draco interactions in this chapter, but we will be meeting Blaise.
Secondly, I just want to say, I know Blaise is supposed to be black in the books. However, I never really noticed the Blaise character while reading the books. It wasn’t until I read a few fanfics that I became acquainted with him and he happened to be described as Italian in those. So my mental image of him is still of that first impression: tall, dark and of Italian/Greek descent. I’m sorry if this annoys anyone but I can’t change my mental image of him any easier than I could make Draco be short with dark hair.
Lastly, I want to thank everyone who reviewed this story. I was so encouraged by all of the positive feedback that I've gotten so far!!

The door to the head compartment slid open and Blaise poked his annoyed-looking face inside.
“Mind if I hang out in here” he asked “I can’t stand being back there with the lovebirds anymore.”
Draco tiled his head in acquiesce and closed the book he was reading so Blaise stepped in and sat down. “How was the meeting?” he asked.
“It went fine; I let Granger run the whole thing although she’s probably not too happy about that. I expect a lecture on fulfilling my duties as soon as she’s able”
“You are Crabbe and Goyle’s hero now more than ever. When they did take a break from discussing their wondrous shop it was to extol on your bravery by being willing to deal with Granger and her sidekicks all year”
“It’ll be fine” Draco said, “She’s too professional to allow her dislike for me to get in the way of her duties. We’ll just have to come up with some ground rules and then we’ll only have to deal with each other occasionally. And hopefully I’ll never have to deal with her Gryffindork friends.”
“Well good luck, better you than me, although it would be worth deal with her to be able to get away from the rest of our housemates.”
“Trust me, I’ve already thought of that” Draco replied.
“Well if you don’t mind, I’m going to try to get some sleep before we get there” Blaise said, already beginning to yawn. “I’ve been so tired lately, haven’t been sleeping well at all.”
Draco just nodded in reply and went back to reading the book from before.
As Blaise felt himself drifting off, he also felt himself drifting away. He tried to grab ahold, keep it here with him so he could get some rest but his Veela half was too strong and it slipped through his mental hold and floated up and away. It had been happening ever since he turned 17 and his Veela half had emerged to search for his mate… and Blaise was bloody sick of it. Most of the effects of being a Veela were great: the strength, the magical boost, and the fact that he inherited the good looks that made women swoon. However, he could live without the searching. Practically every time he slept his Veela half would leave his body and go soaring around the world, searching for the woman who was supposed to fit him. It wouldn’t come back until right before he awoke, leaving him mentally exhausted even though his body was rested. The Veela knew how far he could push Blaise and would occasionally give him some time off when he became too fatigued, but after a couple nights he would be back on his quest.
Blaise settled in for a nonrestful nap and decided to test out his abilities since he wouldn’t be getting any real rest anyway. He forced his Veela to allow him to see through his Veela eyes. It was a shock the first time he figured out how to do this. His Veela eyes saw everything more clearly, colors were more vibrant, and the biggest difference: he could literally see magic. It was one way that the Veela determined an eligible mate. Everyone had a magical aura, the strength of which determined how well they would be able to harness the magic that surrounded them in nature or, in rare cases, that resided within them. To be an eligible mate for a Veela one couldn’t just be a conductor of magic but had to have a magical core as well. A golden or silver core was one of the genetic indicators of a viable match.
He floated out the door and down the hallway, glancing in the compartments holding the first and second years as he went by. He could see their magical auras, some stronger than others, but all unfocused and wild. He could see their magic leaking out of them and back into nature, which was good since none of them had the control necessary to deal with all of their magical potential at this age.
As he was passing by the compartments holding the younger years, three Gryffindor students came out of the changing rooms. As they were male he immediately dismissed them as anything of interest until he saw Neville. The bumbling Gryffindor had always been a puzzle to him. It had always seemed odd that he had landed in Gryffindor at all, he seemed much more suited to Hufflepuff what with his seemingly stunted magical abilities. Curiously, a dark cloud of magic appeared to be encompassing Neville, blocking what seemed to be a very impressive aura. He recognized the signature of a dark curse immediately but who had placed it on Neville and how long it had been there was a mystery to him. It wasn’t until the Gryffindors turned into their compartment that Blaise realized how long he had been following them. He tucked the Neville issue away for later when he had time to muse on it; he had a more important job to do now.
He glanced into the compartment and his eyes were immediately drawn away from the puzzle Neville posed to a gleam coming from the window seat. There sat the head girl, laughing with the girl Weasley, but it wasn’t her bright aura that attracted his gaze, but the golden light emanating from her core… the golden light that indicated a possible match. He drew closer to her, passing into the compartment.
The moment he passed the threshold of the room her head snapped up, her eyes focusing on where his head should be. Startled he almost stepped back, but she was too quick. In a flash her wand was out and she muttered a spell that sent a pink fog swirling around the cabin. He recognized the spell, it was a simple one used to find invisible objects. Even if the object was concealed from the naked eye, the fog would part around it, creating a silhouette that would be visible. As he was non-corporeal the fog floated right through him.
Everyone stopped talking to look over at the head girl.
“You ok Hermione?” the Weaslette asked.
“Yeah, just my imagination getting the best of me” Hermione replied, although she continued to look around suspiciously. Her eyes focused on where Blaise was standing for another few seconds before she turned back to her friend.
Blaise breathed a sigh of relief, for a second he had been concerned that something was wrong. The only people who were supposed to be able to see the mental projection of a Veela were other Veelas who were in that form. The fact that she could sense him showed an interesting level of power and instincts that were far superior then the average person.
He looked the girl over, he could hear his human half’s thoughts on her and knew that he had no outright objections. It seemed that his human half had never given her much thought as anything other than the Muggleborn who hung around with Wonderboy and seemed to live for lessons and her friends. It seemed that his human’s only doubt of her suitability was that he always figured Draco had a bit of a soft spot for her. After all she wouldn’t bother his best friend so much if he felt nothing but annoyance at her existence.
He studied her appearance: long, curly locks of hair fell around her shoulders and down her back, framing an attractive face. Wide eyes sparkled with amusement at whatever her friend was saying and her lips were turned up in a slight grin…lips that looked good enough to eat if he was honest with himself. They were plump and perfect for kissing, and would be perfect for other activities his human half thought salaciously. The rest of her was obscured from view due to her position and her cloak covering most of her body but he could detect the curve of her breast and couldn’t recall anything objectionable about her figure from previous years.
Blaise knew she was intelligent from the classes they had shared and had seen her loyalty to those she cared about. He could also tell from her aura she was very powerful indeed and had heard the rumors that she had been integral in the demise of the Dark Lord. She would be a very powerful mate, with sensibilities and traits that would attract both the man and Veela. But Draco was his best friend, his only real friend if he was honest with himself, could he live with himself if he went after her? He decided to return to his body in order to give his human half time to process everything and decide whether or not he wanted to pursue the pretty girl.
Blaise’s head jerked up as his Veela slammed back into his body.
“You alright there Blaise?” Draco asked from across the aisle, looking at him with concern. Blaise looked into his friends eyes with confusion and shook his head to clear it of the perplexing thoughts.
“Yeah, I think so”, Blaise responded, turning to look out the window. Draco looked at him for a few more moments before leaving his friend with his thoughts and going back to his book.
A/N: Don't worry, the Neville thing will play a part in the story later on but not a romantic part. This is strictly a Blaise/Draco/Hermione story.
