She could hear them muttering behind their breath, scrambling about in her mind as they discussed exactly what they –thought- was the best way for her to proceed forward. And their suggestions had never bordered any further than the most childish, easiest way to end up in front of the Elders (complete with the narrowed eyes, twitching mouths and the entire sarcastic tone that made someone feel three inches tall).
The latest one from them had been a doozy.
Exactly –how- had Bill and Charlie thought that it would be possible for-
-Amy- said Oli, in a long suffering voice as that made an attempt to over-ride the extremely annoying voices of her Older Brothers –You can not be still arguing with yourself over that conversation-
Amy sniffed.
Was there any point in Amy even trying to answer that? Oli didn’t need her confirmation. He –knew- the reply to that.
She let out a soft growl, barely noticing the sudden scattering of the small groups of students who had earlier gathered around her to study in the vain belief that their numbers would keep her from hurting –all- of them. It was an uneasy truce between the Hufflepuffs and the Slytherins (the Hufflepuffs, even with their easy going nature weren’t stupid enough to think that this would gain them any leeway in any other situation and for the Slytherins having to admit that they actually needed the help of a much lesser House) but agreed upon simply for…survival.
Unfortunately in the case of both Houses, they forgot that Amy had a quick hand and was able to send spells after them, even if they had managed to disappear out of the Main Doors of The Great Hall.
And of course there was the small point that the Homework Hours was being chaperoned by Remus Lupin.
Along with James Potter and Sirius Black.
Amy’s nose twitched.
And Amy was, as she promised to the Elders from the very first night of the school year, trying to keep under the radar as much as possible. Other than the expected public experience and responses out of her, Amy was hiding even more than usual. Making any of her appearances to the rest of the school even rarer and…
Hell.
It made everything worse.
How was she supposed to be able to meet up with Oli, Anto, Cedric and Penny properly if they had to keep up with their Public Social Gatherings and she had to be kept out of the Public Eye? Smoke and Mirrors, along with Half/Complete Silences, could only get them so far.
The purpose for her being here was only due to the Elders Banning her from disappearing into any of the dungeon rooms frequented by Slytherins. They had a new fear (for Merlin’s sake, it had not been that big of an explosion and it wasn’t as if anyone else, other than Slytherins, the Elders and her Kata and Allies [due to having to rescue her from the Elders’ rants] had even noticed!) of her going off on one of her own little projects and so had demanded that she do any paperwork she had planned (whether it was due to school or not) be done in The Great Hall.
Amy wondered at one point had the Elders remembered that Remus Lupin was the one over-seeing Homework Hours today at that time.
And then what had driven them to decide that they wouldn’t retract it once they had.
Amy gave another low growl.
For Merlin’s sake! They knew how hard it was for her to be around Remus Lupin and had seen the repercussions (there had been instances when the Elders had had to interfere for her own good) with greater frequency than any other School Year. And yet they still…
Amy shot a glance at the laughing forms of Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and James Potter, only to immediately hear the disapproving growl from Anto.
-Amy- said Anto from his position of the closest point of the Gryffindor Table to the Professor Table –You can’t. You know you can’t!-
Amy could feel her growl grow.
-What?- said Oli’s voice, his Scottish brogue coming in even more clearly than normal at his sudden realization of the entire situation –Amy!-
With a very public rolling of her eyes, Amy thumped the table, earning herself even more space.
-We need to get her out- hissed Penny, her own little note of annoyance creeping through.
Undoubtedly, that was more due to not noticing until now. Oli could get away with it (at least Publically and within the confines of his own Kata and Allies as even though the ones he cared about were the most important Creatures in his life, he still… Well, sometimes he still allowed himself to be consumed by one subject and left everything else fall to the wayside so to speak), but Penny…
Penny prided herself in knowing every situation that may lead to her needing to play a part in it.
-We can’t- said Anto –The Elders have ordered her presence in The Great Hall and if she was to leave-
-They would have to understand- said Oli –Amy is on the other side of The Great Hall to Remus, Sirius and James and you can see how badly they are still affecting her!-
-I’m fine- hissed Amy –I just need-
-You need to be given some time away from all of this- said Oli –For Fuck’s sake, you’ve just had to endure a long talk with Bill and Charlie over the cons of them taking a little trip to Hogwarts to see Remus for their own selves!-
Amy sighed.
They were stubborn asses. Always had been. Always would be.
And their demands to be allowed to return to Hogwarts had only partly been for Amy’s own welfare. Spread the amount of pain between the lost Mates. Have it so that Amy wasn’t the only one who had access to Remus Lupin, but unable to do anything about it.
But also because they…
Just because they had more time to spend with Remus Lupin and the other Marauders, it didn’t mean that they wouldn’t welcome any more seconds, minutes or hours they could increase that. And Amy couldn’t feel any anger towards them because of that.
How could she?
Any time they could spend with their Old Mates…was precious.
-They are definitely not going to travel back without a valid excuse?- said Penny, in a disparaging voice.
Amy snorted.
Did she have to answer that?
-Depends on what you term as a valid excuse- muttered Anto –Last time they barely gave any real reason to the Elders before taking short-term leave from their jobs-
Told the High Dragon Master (as it was in the case of Charlie) and the Overseer (for Bill) that there was a family emergency that needed to be taken care of, sent a quick note to the Elders (already long gone before the Elders could reply with their Ban) and had vanished into the complexity that was Russia.
Josh had, of course, tried to get the word out to everyone.
Bill and Charlie had arrived to make it in the First Wave of getting Josh out of trouble. Brian had swooped in shortly after and by the Second Wave…
All of them were there, Amy managing to sneak out of Hogwarts before Bill and Charlie’s owls had arrived.
The Elders had not been pleased, especially as there had been a near –incident- of the ones who were expected to be return as Students to Hogwarts had nearly not made it. Or at least, that’s what the Elders had yelled.
But one week before the 1st of September was still plenty of time. And just because Oli, Anto, Amy, Cedric and Penny hadn’t immediately returned to Hogwarts once they had travelled back to the United Kingdom was no reason for the Elders to argue that they had a right to inflict an even harsher Ban on them.
The only reason they had chosen to go to The Three Broomsticks first was because Rosmerta had agreed to always allow them to leave a second change of clothing there should they need it. And yes, it did give them some extra time before they would have to face the wrath of the Elders.
Amy had –told- Bill, Charlie, Brian and Josh that they weren’t to Contact the Elders or allow themselves to be Contacted until after Amy, Penny, Cedric and Oli had faced the first hit of the Elders’ displeasure. If any of the Elders did get through to the Older Ones first…
It was wildly acknowledged by both Katas, the Professor Elders and their Guardian Elders, that Brian, Josh, Bill and Charlie (this was one that he was all too easily swayed on this subject) only managed to anger the Elders further on this point. It was one of the times when their Common Sense shone through as in very small supply and couldn’t be disputed.
At least by the Females who did try to hide this and keep the Older Males (publicly) acting as though they had it.
And it was bloody hard to do too.
The Older Members of their Kata thought nothing of pissing the Elders off (since they believed that they all too easily fell into the nonsense of thinking they were right and wouldn’t move from that point of view), and didn’t think anything twice of telling the Elders they were over-reacting. Didn’t matter if they were only feet away and the Elders could –enact- a Detention on them. Those Males would…
Amy inwardly rolled her eyes.
It had been enough touch and go over that entire –incident-. Amy had had to threaten the lot of the Males with several curses she had been hoping to keep hold of a little longer (since they were so serious) in order to keep them in line. Bill had actually laughed at her in the beginning, until…
Slight flicker of her lips.
But in the end, he had realised that she was completely serious and had –agreed- that it was for the best if they did hold off.
Only taken until she was half an hour from Hogwarts on the return journey to get to that too.
Bloody stubborn Males.
Why couldn’t they have just understood immediately that she was not willing to be the one to face an even angrier group of Elders than the –incident- involving Josh? Why did the force her to have to argue it out with them? To spell out each bit to make them see…?
Why was the bloody sea fucking blue on a clear day?
-Maybe- muttered Penny –but this time they’ll be travelling to exactly where the Elders are. See how they manage to sweet talk themselves out of that?-
Amy snorted.
-Easy- she said with a growl –They’ll drag us into it. We’ll be forced to think of an excuse for them because now it will be our problems as well-
-It’s already our problem- muttered Anto –They’re Members of our Kata-
-Too true- said Penny –So why can’t they figure out to be –nicer- to us by not bringing such trouble to our door?-
-Because they’re Males- said Amy.
-Oi!- said Oli –I do not-!-
-That crystal ball incident, Oli- interrupted Amy, stringing along the Alpha Female voice for good measure, just in case Oli did try to argue –Don’t pretend that you had nothing to do with that-
-I wasn’t the one who threw the stupid crystal ball at Trelawney!- said Oli.
Amy snorted.
-I wasn’t aiming at her!- she snapped, before a little thought nudged itself to the forefront of her mind.
Amy could feel her growl increasing
–Besides, the ball missed!- Amy insisted.
It had.
Bloody Bat had ducked.
-Amy- said Anto, with quite a disapproving Tone that gave her quite a clear picture of exactly what he thought over the entire event.
But there was in no way that Amy could be blamed. It wasn’t as if she had gone and tried to seek out the twisted Old Bat. Or had several spells and objects at the ready because she had known beforehand that she would bump into Trelawney.
Those had been in case she had to spend any time with Slytherins or, if she absolutely had to (for the most part she did try to leave it to snarky remarks) the other students.
And, despite Amy’s continuous vision of that witch, Amy doubted that the stupid Seer would try and find Amy.
After the few incidents during the classes the Elders had forced Amy to take during her Third Year before everything had gone so pear-shaped that the Elders had finally realised… They’d have to retract it.
Having two such similar people around each other…was a stupid idea.
Amy snorted again.
The Elders should have figured that out considering they knew all about Amy’s long running battle with the Potions Master. They’d seen the aftermath and even witnessed a few of the –arguments-.
So adding Trelawney as yet another Creature that pissed Amy off…
Not a good move.
And the bloody bitch-
-And she bloody well deserved it!- said Amy.
A soft groan from Anto.
-Oh, Amy- he muttered.
Amy sent another snort his way.
-Shh- suddenly cut in Cedric’s voice –You’ve caught James Potter’s attention-
Hunching her shoulders slightly, Amy risked glancing over at Cedric. And then gave a soft sniff. Never would think that he was in the middle of a Silent Conversation. He looked too engrossed in the conversation with his other Hufflepuff Quidditch mates.
And at the same time of carrying off a public talk with three fellow Hufflepuffs, and the Silent Conversation with Penny, Oli, Anto and Amy, he was acting as Watcher for the two Katas.
No one ever suspected him of anything but being of as innocent as a Member of The Resistance could be.
-Who he’s keeping an eye on?- murmured Anto, his thread of Silence even more muted as the two Katas tried to make it harder for anyone to find out they were having this conversation.
Or to trace it.
To the individuals who were involved.
-Oli, mostly- said Cedric –but he’s now…-
Amy dropped her eyes, scratching another phrase of possibilities to get her hands on a certain plant (carefully coded just in case anyone who might cause trouble for her if they got their hands on it) as she could feel the anticipation grow among them.
It wasn’t as if there was anything Oli could give away to any of The Marauders. He was an expert in hiding (even from the Pack he used to be a part of once), and he was currently involved in one of his most usual public duties. Not that he was complacent because he did it so often.
Oli was always careful and so…
They shouldn’t have anything to worry about Oli.
-Cedric?- said Anto softly –He’s now what?-
Another pause before there was a sudden hiss.
-Amy- said Cedric –Freeze now!-
Amy’s body seized as she stared resolutely at the large textbook she had propped up against another. It was undoubtedly the wrong response. She shouldn’t make it more obvious that she knew she was under observation but it was first reaction, wasn’t it?
Hide.
Go invisible as possibly can.
-Right- hissed Oli –I’ve had enough. Amy is getting out of there-
-No- Amy murmured. –No. I can’t-
-Amy- said Oli –You can’t stay here-
-But I can’t leave either- said Amy –How are you going to manage it without making everyone even more suspicious-
-So far it’s only James Potter- said Penny.
-Yes- said Amy –in the beginning. But believe me, if he’s having any thoughts of me, he will be informing the other two-
-We can get you out without making anyone think twice- said Oli.
-How?- said Anto.
Exactly. That was the big question.
How would they get her out of here? No student was allowed to leave The Great Hall during the first hour of Homework Hours. And it hadn’t gotten to that yet.
If Amy had known beforehand that Remus Lupin would be the Overseer, she’d have thought twice of following the orders of the Elders. And if she had realised before she had sat down, spread out all of her things and started the long process of trying to figure out how to approach the problem with the Older Males of the Katas and the smaller matters of what she needed to work on, that Sirius Black and James Potter were going to join Remus Lupin…
She’d have gone nowhere near The Great Hall, despite what the Elders wanted.
But here she was, instead, trying to figure out a way of getting out.
-One way- said Oli softly.
She could feel his gaze on her, before he quickly moved his attention somewhere else.
-I’m sorry Amy- he said –but we’re going to need to start a ruckus-
Amy sighed.
Yes. That was completely believable. All of the student body knew that she would argue at the drop of a hat, and that everyone had a very short temper with her. And so it would only take a few words, throw out some of the Dancing Argument and soon enough…
-She’s nowhere near us- said Anto –We on purpose placed ourselves on opposite sides of The Great Hall so that there was no chance of anyone thinking we were up to something. Give us a chance to have a Silent Conversation-
-We’ve started ones where we are even further apart- said Oli –We can do this-
-We don’t even have any little pranks on us- said Penny –We all agreed that we’d stop taking those around with us during Homework Hours because the Elders kept doing those on the spot checks-
-We’ve still got our voices- said Oli –and we’ve more than once proved that that can be enough-
-Oh bloody Hell- murmured Amy, as she felt her body give a little.
This wasn’t going to go well.
Not that any of the Argument Dances ever did. They always took so much out of them. Just having to parrot the old words and mimic the exact same movements and…
It was something that was plausible and would get her out.
But she hated the repercussions.
…They’d need another night of just being with each other.
-So what are we going to yell at each other about?- said Anto.
-I think it should just be between myself and Amy, Anto- said Oli –Easier and…effective enough-
-I’m not having only you two having to go through all of this- said Anto –Not bloody likely. I’m playing a part-
-But…- said Oli, undoubtedly his thoughts reminding him of the exact state Anto had been in for the past couple of days. They had made up, and were speaking to each other again (a bloody miracle as there had been a second bust up) and hopefully…
Hopefully that would continue.
The pair of them just had to be careful speaking to each other again.
-There are no buts in this, Oliver- said Anto –I will be doing something in this-
A slight snort.
-Even if all I am doing is yelling at the pair of you for disturbing the peace- said Anto –I don’t care if I have to resort to my Public Persona and be the pain in the ass who is more consumed with getting his homework done than House loyalty-
-Anto- said Oli in a wear voice, though carefully controlled so that he might not annoy his Mate.
Amy sighed.
Well, at least he was trying.
-So what will the two of you be screaming at the top of your voices?- said Anto –with of course your voices magnified due to the wonderful acoustics of The Great Hall?-
Oli and Amy snorted in sync.
-Is James Potter still watching Amy very closely?- said Penny softly –This won’t work unless you can get it off her long enough to initiate it-
-We have managed it even when under the direct gaze of the Elders- said Oli.
-This is different- muttered Anto –This is James Potter. And Sirius Black. And Remus Lupin. You know how it can be-
A slight pause.
Yes.
They did.
But it did mean that they had a better understanding of how to get around it.
-Other Quidditch?- said Cedric softly, only to be immediately met with slight hisses.
-No- said Amy –My Public Persona is in no way interested in the sport-
Oli snorted.
-Only because you always swore that you would never support the Slytherin Quidditch Team- he said –and as you hate every other House Quidditch team, though slightly less-
-Which is why I wouldn’t bother getting into an argument with you over it- said Amy –Has to be something else-
