Fenir stormed across the village, Maya following closely on his heels. Fenir rushed past Nero, who had been lightly dozing against a stick he found from somewhere, and threw open the tent door. Ram had pulled a log seat in from somewhere and was currently sitting with his arms resting on his knees and his chin on his hands, his eyes trained on the sleeping wolf intently. He stood up quickly when the Alpha approached.
"Alpha?"
"Has he moved?" Fenir asked, walking over to the prone body on the bed.
"Not since you left but he seems to be sleeping now," Ram responded. He turned quickly as the out-of-breath healer rushed through the door. "Maya, how is the other one?"
"A lot worse off than Lupin," Maya replied.
Fenir turned his head slightly, his eyes low and dangerous. "You shouldn't be here. Go back and stay with him."
"I will not have you waking up my other patient when he should be resting." The young healer placed his hands on his hips and jutted his chin out in defiance. Fenir gave a low growl but Maya stood resolute. He walked up to Fenir's side and checked Lupin's forehead.
"I need to know what the hell is going on here. I need to know what that was in there," Fenir said under his breath. "The longer this goes on for, the more people who know, the worse the situation. We need to know what is going on."
Maya leant in to Fenir to reply. "I know but if you start yelling and blustering you'll wake up the entire pack and then what will happen? This can wait until morning. Go back to your hut, and for Elousie's sake get Evan to do the same. Sleep if you can and we will see what he has to say once he is rested. Even if you wake him up right now you aren't going to get much out of him." Fenir looked down at Lupin. His grey pallor was almost gone, a rosiness appearing on his cheeks. "Please, Fenir, let him sleep"
Fenir dropped his head in agreement before stepping away from the bed. "Okay, but you have to stay with the boy and I mean it, no doms are to go anywhere near him." Fenir lifted his head and voice. "Ram, can you stay with Lupin until morning?"
Ram nodded. "Namile will have your head though." Fenir agreed with a nod and moved back to the outside whilst Ram took up his stool again.
"I'll get Blue to bring you another fur. It is going to get colder tonight." Maya said as he moved to follow Fenir.
"I will be fine, healer, we were sleeping in worse than this not long ago. I'm not old yet."
Maya gave him the best 'I'm a healer you will listen to me' look he could. "That was then this is now. I'm not going to let you get sick just because of stupid pride. Honestly, doms!" Maya threw up his hands and left the tent. When he arrived outside Fenir was giving fresh orders to Nero, who was looking a good deal more alert than he had been moments earlier when they had entered.
"No one is to enter that tent until I come back not even you, clear?"
"Yes Alpha." Nero bowed his head slightly as Fenir moved away, Maya once again following.
The healer leant into Fenir to speak privately. "Are you sure Nero's okay to stand guard? He looked pretty tired when we went in."
"He is fine. As he put it he has no mate waiting for him back at the tent just three smelly doms. I would hate to have another sub on my case in the morning." Fenir grimaced slightly as Maya gave a small laugh.
"Oh yes, Namile is going to be in one hell of a mood in the morning. Good luck dealing with that. I am going to go back and check on the boy. Please convince those idiots to go to bed." Maya gestured over to the small dying fire in the village centre currently being used to warm three doms. Fenir gave him a nod before wandering over to the circle as Maya return to his patient.
The three wolves stood as their Alpha approached, inclining their heads with respect.
"What are you three still doing up? Especially you Evan. Maya is going to have your hide in the morning."
Evan huffed. "I'm not scared of him. I am capable of staying up late without having a healer wiping my backside."
"And what about Elouise, hum?"
Evan began laughing, "Now her I am scared of!" The rest of the doms joined in the laughter. "So you'd better tell me what is going on so I can save my skin." The other two doms quietened down to listen to the Alpha.
"Look, I don't even know what is going on at the moment so go to bed all of you. I'll tell everyone what I know in the morning, hopefully we should have more answers by then."
"Oh come off it, Fenir!" Bej said earning a glare from the Alpha.
"Look that is all I am going to say. Go to bed, don't go to bed, I don't care, but you are not going to find anything out until the morning. I am going to see if I can get at least a little shut eye. Tomorrow is going to be interesting." he turned and walked back to his hut before they could try and convince him again. They would probably stay up a little longer but then hopefully they would all make their way back to their huts, mates and beds.
****
It was early when Fenir decided he had lain awake for long enough and left his hut. The sun was just reaching over the horizon, filtering through the trees, giving the world a golden tinge. Fenir took a deep breath of the crisp air, enjoying the silence of the morning. He resisted the urge to storm straight in to Lupin's tent and demand answers, as much as everyone was as curious as him after the late night before he doubted they would appreciate being woken before the sun. Instead he walked down to the lake, his water bucket mysteriously empty, to wash away the lack of sleep.
The lake nearest the village was a beautiful sight first thing in the morning. It was small, not large enough to attract too much prey, but had an underground supply to keep it fresh. It was the main reason they had chosen to create their permanent village here. They had been mostly nomadic out of necessity during the war, wizards couldn't apparate if they didn't know where you were, and it had taken some time before they had been comfortable enough to attempt to set down roots and even longer before they had started building the permanent huts that now made up most of their homes, with only three tents remaining, a large one for the unmated doms, one for their youngest mated pair, Lemmy and Matty, and finally one for the only unmated sub in their pack, Melim. Soon enough even those tents would become tatty and old, replaced by warm and sturdy huts, and moving on would be next to impossible. The thought both excited and scared him, moving towards the future, trusting that their peace would last.
Fenir knelt down to the lake and splashed the freezing water on his face before sitting back and staring across the lake. The lake always calmed him, cleared his mind but today he couldn't stop the thoughts whirring around his brain. He couldn't fathom why Lupin would return to the pack after all this time. It had been 2 years since the end of the war and another year where the 'light' side were clearly loosing. Why would Remus Lupin return to them now? Although he was confused Fenir couldn't help the small part of him that was happy at his homecoming. Remus had been his family and now he was where he belonged, where he always should've been. Very few of the stolen children had survived the war but those who had had been forgiven by their people, if they had managed to forgive themselves. They had been only children when they had been tortured, drugged and brainwashed. Some had killed themselves with the shame but Wolfsbain addiction had taken most of them, killed them with the pain of disconnection from the pack, or sent them mad with bloodlust so the kindest thing was to put them out of their misery. Lupin was strong, he had survived without Wolfsbain before, maybe he could get through the withdrawal, maybe they could be a pack again?
Ripples moved across the water in front of him, startling him out of his thoughts. He looked up and across the lake, following the ripples back to their source. Melim looked across the lake back at him, a rock in her hand. She threw it into the lake and looked down at the ripples before turning to walk back around the lake. Melim had always been strange, even when she was a child. She had had this funny way of talking and looking at people, and she knew things, things that people shouldn't know. Most of the pack had stayed away from her, scared of magic and not knowing what she was going to do next. That was until Tucker had come along. The difference having a mate had made to her was remarkable. She had still been a little odd but gone were the strange looks, the weird predictions and the pack's nerves around her. It had made it all the worse when Tucker and their two small pups had been killed. It was amazing that Melim had survived the heartbreak, but sometimes Fenir thought it would have been better if she hadn't. She barely spoke to anyone, if anyone spoke to her she would just stare at them, as if she was seeing something else. She approached the Alpha, her head cocked to one side, like she was listening to something. Fenir turned away from the lake to face her.
"Melim," Fenir acknowledged with a nod. He had always felt uneasy around her and talking to her had not become easier since her loss. She stood still in front of him, still listening to whatever it was she could hear. "Melim?"
"Change is coming. Good and bad." She leant forward and touched her finger tips to Fenir's chest. "Listen" she stood up straight and looked at him for a moment, before turning and walking back towards the village.
It took Fenir a moment to recover. That was probably the first time in months that Melim had spoken to him and she had left him completely confused. Usually she just seemed to know things, when winter would begin, when a pup would be stillborn, once she had even fingered the father of an illegitimate pup which made most of the pack avoid her for months. She had only been a few summers herself then, young and foolish some might say. As far as he knew she had never given a prophecy before, known what was about to happen and tried to warn the pack, but what did it mean? What should he listen to? It was so vague but from what he remembered prophecies usually were. He looked down at the water. She said there was bad coming. Should he get rid of them now? Call the Dark Lord and get them taken away before they could hurt his pack? But what if they were the good? Fenir stood, brushing his hands down his legs. There was no way of knowing especially with as he didn't really know anything. One thing was sure, Melim was right, change was coming. Fenir smiled to himself as he took one last look at the lake before turning to return to the village. It was time to question the man who had once been his son.
There were a few other awake by the time he returned. Saf was washing Rich down in what was left of her saved water whilst he struggled to get away, obviously not enjoying his morning bath. Someone had started a fire, boiling up some water to brew up, whilst the shaggy heads of Han, Charl and French rolled out of their tent, all three looking a little worse for wear but then they always did in the morning. Maya emerged from Evan's hut, Pelim clutched in his arms. The boy seemed to be still half asleep, unconsciously grabbing for his mother, pups hated being away from their mother's even for one night, and even with Nanny El, as she liked to be called, spoiling them rotten. Maya gave him a short nod before walking over to meet Fenir.
"I take to you are going to wake him up?" He was careful not to mention names, they both knew what he was talking about. Fenir nodded. "Can you wait a minute? I want to be there when he wakes up to check him over but I need to leave Pelim with Blue and I only I got him to go sleep with the bachelors a few hours before dawn. I will get one of them to guard the hut for me and then come and see him with you?" Fenir nodded.
"Get Charl to do it, he looked the most awake out of all of them." Melim nodded and hurried off to the large tent. Fenir walked over to the hastily erected tent at the far side of the village, where Nero was sitting outside hunched over.
"You alright there?" Fenir asked. Nero's body jumped up, suddenly awake.
"Whaaa…?" he said coherently.
"Go to bed, although you might find Blue in it!" Fenir gave him a playful kick. "Off with you!" Nero didn't need to be told twice and moved off quickly before the Alpha could change his mind and keep him on guard. Fenir chuckled to himself as he pulled aside the fabric door and entered the tent. Ram was still in the same position he had been when they had left him earlier, his hands holding his head, staring at the sleeping body.
"Ever vigilant, aren't you Ram."
Ram didn't stir, his eyes never wavering. "Yes I am, Alpha. Wouldn't want something to get past me now would I?"
Fenir smiled, "Why don't you go and find your bed before Namile comes storming in here?"
Ram lifted his head to look at Fenir and returned his friend's smile. "I'd rather not, if you don't mind." He turned again to stare at Lupin. "I have been sitting here all night trying to work it out. Why would he come back now? I could understand when the Auror's fell or when Hogwarts was sacked but he has been nearly two years. What has changed?" Fenir sat down on the log beside his friend. His face drawn.
"I know. It makes no sense but we will have our answers soon."
"You look worried Fenir. Does this have anything to do with the boy?"
Fenir hesitated for a moment. "It is Harry Potter." He looked over towards Ram whose eyes and mouth were open wide in surprise.
"Potter! How… wh…"
Fenir gave a little laugh. "Now you know how I feel."
Just then Maya came rushing in. "Have you woken him yet? No? Good. Glad to know you are still listening without going off half baked."
"And a very good morning to you to Maya." Fenir said. Ram still looked dumbfounded, staring at thin air as his brain tried to process the identity of their second mystery visitor.
"I take it you told him?" Maya said, ignoring Fenir and nodding his head towards the stationary Ram.
"He wanted to stay whilst I questioned Lupin. Everyone is going to know soon anyway."
Maya made a non committal noise under his breath whilst he walked over to check on his patient only to be stopped in his tracks by the prone body sitting up.
"No need to wake me." The voice was croaky and broken. Lupin sat up fully, his knees moving up to support his head and arms. Ram stood up quickly, immediately on the defensive.
Maya scoffed and continued his short walk over to the bed. "You shouldn't be sitting up, you know."
"Healer?" he said motioning his head towards Maya.
"Yes," Fenir answered. "Hello Lupin." Maya set about checking his forehead temperature.
"Hello Alpha." Lupin nodded his head in a quick bow. "I suppose this is my interrogation?" he gave a rough laugh under his breath.
"You will keep a respectful tongue in you head, traitor!" Ram growled, moving forward, his fist clenched in front of him.
Maya turned his head "Keep your voice down! He doesn't need your blow hard…"
Lupin smiled as he took up Maya's hands, interrupting their examination. "I thank you for your care, healer, but I doubt I will be able to enjoy it." He push Maya away gently. "I would like to know how my companion is?"
"He is recovering slowly I have no experience treating wizards," the distaste in his voice was obvious. Lupin inclined his head slightly, acknowledging the disdain.
"I thank you for your care." Maya huffed under his breath but remained quiet. "Now, Alpha, I assume you have many questions for me, most of which I can guess."
"Why are you here, Lupin? You know I should kill you on sight for everything you have done?" Fenir asked, his voice taking on an almost desperate tone.
"I know and I thank you for giving me the chance to explain. We are here because we have nowhere else to go. Harry…" he looked around the faces making sure there was no surprise before he swallowed and continued. "I couldn't leave him there with them." he bowed his head down, resting his forehead on his knees. "I know that…" another swallow "I know that my life is forfeit and you have every right to kill me but please" his face shot up and he looked directly at the Alpha. "you have to save Harry, please."
Ram started to growl under his breath again. "And why the hell would we save your little murdering bitch, hey?!" Ram turned to his Alpha. "He should be given to The Dark Lord. He is our ally not this… this disgusting excuse for a dog!"
"Ram!" Fenir barked. His beta silenced automatically, his eyes glowing with anger. Fenir turned again to Lupin. "He is right, why shouldn't I just hand him over? He is nothing to us. Just another stinking wizard, one with a hefty reward." Maya gave the Alpha a slight sideways glance. He was digging for information, trying to find out what the hell had happened in the hut last night.
Lupin lowered his forehead. "He is special. Like he was born a wolf but in a wizard's body. And he is strong, I had to cover him in anything I could find to stop his smell form attracting every wolf within a ten mile radius. I know that they have set him up as your enemy but really he is gentle soul. He doesn't want to hurt anyone. He is a sub, through and through."
"Ha!" Ram said, Fenir shooting him another withering glance which he ignored. "I stood against him at the battle of Hogwarts. I saw the murder in his eyes as he cut us down. He is no gentle soul!"
Remus glared at him. "You were attacking his pack, the only family he had even known. Would you do any different?" Ram stopped the retort he was gathering. "They taught him that the sun rose and fell with them, that he was nothing without them, a freak. They beat him down so they could control his every thought and when he didn't deliver, when he showed compassion they destroyed him."
Maya placed himself in front of Ram. He had heard this story before from countless pups who had been taken by the wizards for 'reeducation' and judging from the scars littering his small patient's body he was tell the truth.
"If you knew this, why did you let it go on. Why didn't you seek us out sooner."
Lupin hung his head in shame. "I thought I could keep him safe by myself. I… The wolfsbain… without it the agony, the loneliness, it is unbearable. It controlled me, I couldn't even consider giving it up. I didn't want him here, didn't want him to be used but it was the only way I could think of to keep him safe. He will be something special to you, you won't throw him aside." Lupin leant towards them, his hand entreating them, desperation in his eyes. "You can turn him and then he will be safe and he will be what he was always meant to be. And he can have a family, a proper family! Please, you have to…" tears of frustration fell from his eyes. Maya was instantly at his side, brushing the hair from his eyes and slowly pushing him back down on the bed.
"I think that is enough," Maya said. "He is still weak, he needs to recover his strength."
Fenir looked at the healer about to protest only to be silenced by a stern look.
Lupin looked up at the healer. "Please, you have to make sure…" His voice was quiet and strained.
"Shhh, it's fine, I know. Fenir get me the blue bottle now, over with the furs I bought in last night." Fenir did as he was ordered, knowing better then to argue. Maya held the small vile to Lupin lips. "Drink it down now. I will keep Harry safe." Lupin dipped is head backwards, allowing the thick mixture to slide down his throat whilst he kept his eyes trained on the healer until his eyelids slowly dropped down and he fell in to a healing sleep.
Maya slowly moved away, careful not to disturb him. "He should be ok to leave. His fever is gone. All he needs now is sleep and food and he should recover."
Fenir nodded and pulled back the fabric door and led them all out into the morning light. They squinted for a second whilst their eyes adjusted quickly to the bright light. The rest of the pack had appeared whilst they had been questioning Lupin. They were all in the village circle, most had turned to look at them as soon as they had appeared whilst the rest whispered to each other.
"We need somewhere private to talk." Maya and Ram nodded. Suddenly one of the subs stood up and stomped over to them. Namile. Maya rolled his eyes cautiously. As much as Namile was the Alpha sub he really couldn't stand her tantrums.
"Well? Are you going to tell us what is going on or are we meant to keep on guessing, hum? I had Luc in fits last night thinking that the aurors were coming back to get him and where were you oh almighty…" Ram's lip curled up.
"Not now woman!"
Namile's jaw dropped "How dare…"
Fenir cut in before they started at it. "Not now, Namile. We will let everyone know what is going on soon but now is not the time for this." Namile opened her mouth to argue but was silenced. "There is nothing to fear at the moment that is the only thing you need to know." He turned to Maya and Ram. "We will speak in my hut." They nodded in unison.
"I must get back to my patient soon." Maya said before the three of them walked away, leaving a gobsmacked Namile to stare after them and the sound of laughter and a voice that could only be Evan shouting.
"Told you you'd have no more luck then me! Ha!"
Fenir smiled a little at Ram who rolled his eyes back. His mate had always been difficult but since Luc's birth, the first pup of the new generation, she had become more of a harpy. Fenir pushed back his hut's door and led the other two in.
"So" he said sitting down cross-legged on his bed furs. The other two found their own spots and sat down in a small circle. "what are we going to do?"
"I don't see the problem," Ram said, "we kill the traitor and send Potter off to the Dark Lord. Done and dusted."
"He was a child, my child, Ram. You saw for yourself what happened to those who were taken. You saw the mines, the sick torture. Most of the wolves killed themselves rather then come back to their own kind. Can you blame him for fighting." Fenir turned to Maya. "How sick is he? How is the withdrawal?" Maya looked down.
"It is hard to say. I don't know how long he has been going without but he is certainly feeling the effects and he knows it."
"Has anyone ever got over the addiction?"
"No one I have seen" Fenir looked down at the ground. "but I did hear that he was off wolfsbain for six years whilst he was at school. You never know. He might be able to do it."
"And in the mean time we have a mad dog man with a lust for blood running around every full moon. Who knows how long it would take all of that poison to get out of his system. Can we really risk it?" Fenir bowed his head in thought. Ram was right, wolves addicted to wolfsbain were mad rabid beasts, part wolf part man, twice as large and twice as blood thirsty, a monster. But if Lupin could control it…
"There is the boy as well." Maya said.
"I don't even know why we would discuss him. He is a wizard, and not just any wizard but the leader of their whole fucking war and you want to, what exactly? Invite him in? Not to mention what happens when the wizards find out he is here, hum?"
"There is more to this, Ram. You haven't seen him. He is covered in scars, all over his body. Words carved into his skin like brands. Burns, whipping, ra…" Maya stopped himself. Fenir lifted up his head.
"Rapes?" Maya nodded.
"His insides are scarred up pretty bad." Maya turned to Ram. "Does that sound like something they would do to their general? Their leader?"
Fenir spoke up."There is more. What Lupin was talking about, how powerful he is. It is true."
"What do you mean?" Ram asked.
"When I… I went to see what his injuries were, he was so covered in muck when we found him it was amazing that we even found them. He smells like a sub, more than that, he smells like the perfect sub. I could barely keep myself controlled. I wanted him more than I have ever wanted anything before."
"You would put your desire above your pack?" Fenir turned to Ram, his lip up in a snarl.
"Bite your tongue! I would never do that but a sub of that kind of power would be an asset to our pack and, face it Ram, we need subs. We currently have four unmated doms, five if you include me. Luc will be of age soon, not to mention Heps. It was one thing when there was a war to fight but now we have to look to the future. Han is already starting to talk of moving on and Charl will not be far behind him, they even talk of trying to force Melim into taking another mate! Can I just throw one away?" Ram started to growl.
"If they paid attention to their instincts they would not talk so!"
Maya nodded his head solemnly whilst Fenir look confused. "What will you do about the Dark Lord? Ram is right he will come for him, possibly for both of them," Maya asked.
Fenir shook his head."No, Lupin is one of ours. Part of the treaty was that all wolf business is ours. He has no jurisdiction over us. Potter, on the other hand, is a wizard. At least Voldemort has taken the death order from his head, we may be able to offer him something in return for keeping him." Ram stood up feeling that the conversation was coming to a close.
"I still think you should let The Dark Lord deal with him. You risk the entire treaty over a piece of pretty arse." Fenir shot to his feet with a roar and grabbed Ram's throat, lifting him from the floor.
"Watch your tongue!" Ram's fingers scrabbled at the hand enclosing his throat whilst Fenir's face contorted into a fearsome snarl. Maya leapt at the Alpha, grabbing at his arm, trying to pull him off.
"Fenir, no!" Maya was shrugged off and fell to the ground. Fenir's grip loosen slightly, allowing Ram to breathe but still holding him in place. He leant his head in closer.
"Remember your place." Fenir whispered in to Ram's ear before withdrawing his hand and dropping Ram to his feet. The Alpha remained still, staring at his beta, his breathing heavy and laboured. Maya got up quickly and rushed over to Ram to check over his neck only to be pushed away.
"I'm fine." Ram said, under his breath. Fenir turned quickly on his heel and walked out of the hut. Ram moved quickly to follow only to find a small hand pressing again his chest.
"No, I'll go. He is going one of two places and I don't think you want to be there for either of them." Maya let go and moved towards the door quickly. "Get Blue to get you some bruise ointment from my sack or Namile is going to have a fit." Ram's hand when instinctively to his bruised neck and nodded but Maya had already run out of the door.
A/N well this is an ultra long chapter, one of those filler chapter that I hate writing but it is out of the way. Next chapter Harry wakes up!
A/nN I actually finished writing this a while ago but hadn't posted it for reasons I am not certain of. I am quite glad I did now as I had my husband look over the direct speech and it was really confusing. Hopefully this should be better. There is, however, something I need your help on. I am writing the next chapter for 'Punishment' and it is not going well. It seems to be completely full of little inconsequential details. The things is I am not sure whether they add to the story or just distract everyone? Answer's on a postcard… only joking (that may be just a British joke I don't know). If everyone could let me know whether they like the little details (like the twins sleeping arrangements or Harry learning to burp them) or if they are frustrating and just get in the way. Thanks!
