<><>{Chapter 4: New Horizons}<><>
“What are you doing Miss Granger?” Her Potions Master inquired, watching her crawl around on the floor of her new home at Hogwarts. It was a two bedroom suite in the family wing of the castle.
“Baby proofing.” She replied matter of factly. “Benny still hasn’t started crawling but he grabs at everything.” She looked up at him and couldn’t help but notice his eyes lingering on her chest briefly before being averted to the window. She blushed, hoping her imagination had gotten away with her.
She had developed a crush on her then Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor in her sixth year. He did have that tall, dark and brooding thing going for him after all. Plus the fact that he was risking the most during the war had helped soften her heart to him, but she hadn’t had the time to give her crush a second thought since leaving Hogwarts after her sixth year; her mind was otherwise occupied since then.
She looked down and realized that the V of her neckline had pulled forward revealing a lot more of her, now much larger, chest. She blushed and sat up straight.
“I guess I can do this later…” she decided still blushing, a fact which Severus Snape noticed.
“Indeed. Before my castle is flooded with Weasleys, yet again, I was hoping to go over exactly how things will work while you apprentice under me.” He replied.
“Of course sir, why don’t we sit down in the living room?” She moved to stand and Severus extended a hand to help her up. His large hand completely enclosed her smaller one.
“It’s Severus,” he replied capturing her eyes, “You are no longer a student at Hogwarts, you can call me Severus.” She tried to suppress a shiver and looked back into his dark eyes.
“Okay Severus, then you should call me Hermione.” He nodded briefly and released her hand moving to sit down in the arm chair. She sat across from him on the sofa still blushing slightly.
“So, Hermione,” he tested her name out and she couldn’t help but like the sound of it. “Becoming my apprentice is much different than being a student at Hogwarts. Part of your duties will include keeping my personal potions stores filled, you will be asked to manually procure ingredients and we will be reading and discussing current and old potion texts and theories.” He paused; she liked to think for dramatic effect.
“You will also be assisting me in my own potions work, helping me brew potions for the apothecaries’ I am under contract for and for the school’s medical wing. As you well know, I accept nothing but perfection and will expect the same from you. We will make arrangements to meet daily to review any readings you have completed and to review any questions you may have. I will of course be busy with my Headmaster duties, but I will make myself available in the potions laboratory when you decide upon your schedule. Any questions thus far?” he inquired.
“No questions yet.” She replied and couldn’t help but notice the slight bulge of his eyes when she hadn’t immediately pelted him with questions.
“You will be allowed two days off every week, you can choose them. Seeing as you are not a faculty, staff member or student you are not required to attend meals in the Great Hall. You are more than welcome to attend, but your presence is not required.”
She nodded her agreement. “Hogwarts is your home, you are permitted to roam the halls and grounds freely, however your son must be with you at all times when he leaves your quarters. Any guests you may have are to remain in your quarters only, unless you have notified me ahead of time. Do these terms seem agreeable to you?” He inquired.
“Yes, very agreeable.” After years of being his student she knew better than to pepper him with questions and excess chatter.
He stood and walked to a door near the fire place. “This leads to the private potions laboratory I have made available for our usage. If you will follow me, I would like to show you the lab before you start moving in.” he opened the door and held it open for her.
As she stepped into the lab she had to stop short and marvel at it a minute. To her left was a large work space with two desks and the whole back wall was covered in potion texts. There were two matching leather arm chairs in front of a fireplace.
Directly across from her was another door.
To the right were 3 rows of cauldrons. They were made of various metals and sizes. Behind the cauldrons there was a door.
That’s when she felt Severus run into her from behind. Hermione caught the scent of cedar and fresh cut grass.
“Miss… Hermione,” he corrected, grabbing her shoulders and moving her further into the room. “I hope you don’t make it a habit of lingering in doorframes.” He chided her.
She just glared at him and moved further into the room and away from him.
“That door” He pointed to the one across from them “has been enchanted to lead to my office, and the one behind the cauldrons leads to our storeroom. This storeroom is for both our uses and there will be no need to sneak in or burgle.” He glared at her pointedly causing her cheeks to flush.
“I have no idea what you are talking about.” She maintained. For years he had been trying to sneak a confession from her but she always denied any involvement in his lost ingredients.
“Of course you don’t.” he dismissed. “Since there are no students present you and your guests may wander about freely. If you have no further questions I will take my leave.”
“Alright, I need to finish baby proofing before everyone gets here.” She thought aloud. He nodded curtly and disappeared through the other door.
She took one last look around before returning to her own quarters.
Hermione cast some safety charms on the corners of the tables and she secured the rickety furniture. She tied up all the curtains and cords to a safe height and then made her way into the kitchenette and cast locking charms on all of the bottom cabinets but one. She liked to leave one cabinet of Tupperware open for Benny to play with.
Once she was satisfied that the place was safe for her son she called Molly with the floo. “Alright, Come on in!” she called and stood back to give her family room to enter.
Harry came through first carrying Benny and one of her enchanted bags. Then Molly and Ginny followed each carrying two enchanted bags. George was the last to arrive holding all of the enchanted boxes.
George and Harry took the boxes into the second bedroom and started to put together the baby furniture for Hermione. The Weasley matriarch busied herself in the kitchenette putting away all of the flatware and dishes.
Ginny took over Hermione’s bedroom and that left Hermione to putting away her very large and extensive library. By the time she had unpacked her last book, Wandering with Werewolves, her extended family had her all moved in.
Molly cooked them a huge lunch and they all tucked in and after lunch they all went down to visit with Hagrid. It was an interesting sight to watch Hagrid playing peek-a-boo with the little wizard. Hermione had to pull her son out of his large hand’s path a couple of times.
George and Ginny had meetings in the late afternoon and Mrs. Weasley decided to leave then too. Fleur and Bill were bringing Victoire over to the Burrow for dinner and she wanted to start preparing. George still had to practically shove his mother into the fireplace; she was very reluctant to leave Hermione and Benny alone.
“Remember to floo if you need anything! I can be here in minutes.” Molly called.
“Don’t scare the women mother!” George teased. “She may move further away!” he finished causing his mother to playfully hit his arm.
Soon it was just Harry, Hermione and Benny, who was looking all around at his new home.
“So, I got you a house warming gift.” Harry said as he produced a bottle of Ogden’s finest. “We should break in your new place…” he trailed off gently shaking the bottle.
“It’s still before dinner Harry! We would at least have to wait until Benny goes to bed!” She chided him slapping his arm. “How long can you stay?” she asked, still a little nervous about being alone with her son for extended periods of time.
Harry plopped down in her chair with a leg draped over the arm rest. “Till you kick me out!” He exclaimed with a cheeky grin. She just tosseled his hair as she walked passed him to get to the couch.
Benny was done observing the new place and was now fixating on the fireplace. He had already learned that his loved ones enter and leave through the fire and he was expectantly awaiting his missing family members. When they did not return he lost interest and instead began to fuss, looking for his mum.
“Over here love.” She called to her son as she watched him turn very slowly in a sitting position to face her smiling. He was hitting all his milestones at or before the correct times, except two. Talking and crawling.
The young wizard still refused to crawl anywhere. No one pondered how the wizard got to be so stubborn. He could take steps as long as he was holding onto something, but he would not crawl anywhere. In desperate situations he would scoot to his destination but he would only do that when he thought he was alone.
Benny held up his arms toward his mum and started to whine a little. Indicating he wanted to walk over to her. Hermione was tired from moving and was perfectly content to let the little guy cry it out on the floor but Harry could never stand to see Benny cry. He got up and offered Benny his hands and walking the now grinning, almost toddler, towards his Mum.
Benny was not a very vocal baby. Yes, he cried and he laughed too, but that was about all he did; no babbling Benny. Hermione wondered if she should worry that he was so quiet, but she ultimately decided that her son was just fine. He was just taking things at his own pace.
Molly would always try to repeat words over and over to him to encourage his speech. He would always stare at her lips, as they over exaggeratedly formed the letters, concentrating then smiling and clapping when she finished.
Hermione secretly thought that Benny believed they were playing a game, which only made her want to laugh along with her son.
When they got to the couch Harry let go of his hands and Benny stood for a second on his own before grabbing the end of the couch to hold himself up. Smiling he started to bounce on his legs grinning as Harry went to sit down.
“It’s crazy where life can take us.” Harry remarked. “Crazy in a good way.” He grinned.
“I know, who would have thought I’d be the first one with a kid. I thought it would be you and Ginny for sure!” Hermione teased. “How are things going anyways?” She inquired.
Harry reached in to his pocket and pulled out a small felt box and tossed it to her. “I was waiting to see if this whole Ron thing was going to blow over, but I am tired of waiting for that wanker to smarten up. Do you think she’ll like it?” Harry asked.
Hermione opened the little box and revealed a white gold band with a large square cut diamond placed in between two smaller square cut rubies.
“It’s beautiful! She will love it!” His friend cried.
“I got it from my vault, I think it’s the same one my father gave my mother.” Harry remarked watching Hermione admire the ring.
“When are you going to ask her?” Hermione inquired shutting the box and handing it back to him.
“I was thinking I would do it on Sunday after the family dinner.”
“Fantastic! I am so happy for you! We are defiantly celebrating after Benny goes to bed!” she declared grinning. “When did we grow up anyways?” she teased causing Harry to smile and shake his head.
“No clue. I guess we blinked… and must of missed it!” He teased. A comfortable silence fell upon the group as they watched the little baby toddle back and forth along the edge of the couch.
“Hermione, do you miss him?” Harry asked very quietly. He didn’t say his name, but they both knew he meant Ron.
“Of course I do. You don’t know how badly I wish things had gone differently that day but I have accepted that I cannot control the actions of others.” She stated, but her lip was beginning to tremble.
“I can’t help but feel responsible for his absence though. I see the way Molly stares longingly at his picture on the family clock. It kills me Harry.” Harry noticed her tears and was at her side in less than a second.
With Harry supportive arms around her it was hard not to feel loved. “Hermione, you have no idea how hard it was for Ron, that night. He was a mess; he could hardly stand right and he looked to be in physical agony.” He told her rubbing her back.
She pulled out of his embrace and looked him in the eye. “Are you trying to make me feel better, because now I feel worse.” She stated. Benny had scooted closer to Hermione’s leg and he rest his head on her knee, nuzzling his cheek against her in support.
“Just hear me out. Ron wanted nothing more than to save and protect you that night and he failed you. Then Benny comes along and I am sure Ron, being the charming bastard that he is, probably sees Benny as a reminder of his own failures that night.”
She felt the now familiar calming energy and began to stroke her son’s platinum curls.
“He always did have a problem with perspective…” she trailed off causing Harry to stare.
“What a nice way to put it.” Harry laughed hugging her tight again. “
“I guess we have to change his perspective then.” He said to both Hermione and Benny. Benny just looked up at the smiles on his caretakers’ faces and grinned back.
<><>{Chapter Four}<><>
After putting Benny to bed Harry and Hermione celebrated with fire whiskey shots. Harry only took two, not wanting to be impaired while flooing. Hermione had four, which was two too many in Harry’s opinion. He had finally managed to get her into bed and turned the lights off. He set up the baby monitoring spell for her and made sure she was tucked in.
After checking on Benny one last time, Harry flooed to his office. It was high time someone gave Ron a change of perspective. Harry had tried to find the time to talk to Ron but he didn’t want to have it out at work in front of all of their co-workers.
Ron had blocked his fireplace from Harry and his family but Harry knew that the Aurors’ were required to keep an open floo connection to the office. After popping in to work he checked to see if any of his co-workers were burning the midnight oil. Once he was sure the place was empty he flooed over to Ron’s flat.
Upon arriving at the flat Harry’s nose was assaulted by the most disgusting odor. It was a combination of stale food, old trash and fire whiskey.
It was dark in the flat and Harry promptly tripped over empty bottles. The clanking sound was soon followed by a loud moaning and Harry realized that Ron was in fact here.
‘He can’t be LIVING here.’ Harry thought disgustedly. After casting a quick Lumos he located Ron on the couch covered in old Daily Prophets and food wrappers.
He walked over to Ron and not so gently gave him a poke with his wand
“Ron, get up!” he called quite loudly but Ron didn’t even move. “Wake up! I need to talk to you!” Harry called a little louder roughly shaking the drunken wizard by the shoulders.
Ron began to stir. “Whaaat?” he moaned, blinking and rubbing his face. “Harry? Issss tha you?” he slurred sounding very confused.
“Yes it’s me you wanker, we need to talk.” He said pulling the man up into a sitting position on the couch. Harry stood in front of his old friend and crossed his arms.
“What is your problem?” he asked Ron looking at him pointedly. Ron just scowled at his friend and looked away stubbornly.
“Oye! Listen up mate! I asked you a question.” Harry persisted.
Ron looked up at him in disgust. “Do I have to say it… her ba… it’s a Malfoy.” Ron finished, running out of steam.
Harry just shook his head. “Really? That’s what this is all about?” Harry asked sounding annoyed. “Last I checked his surname was Granger, like his mother.”
“But…” Ron tried to interrupt but Harry cut him off with just a look.
“It seems to me that you are punishing everyone for something that no one wanted, planned or expected. That seems rather selfish, don’t you think?” he asked his one-time friend.
“Do you have any idea how much I understand what you are feeling. I empathize, I do. But you need to stop this. Today. You can’t always protect everyone you love all the time. That is part of life. You need to man up and face where life has taken our family. You have missed so much already, Bill and Fleur had their baby girl, Percy is engaged and on Sunday I want to ask your sister to marry me. I want our whole family to be there and that includes you, but you need to let go of this and come home.”
He offered his hand out to the wizard in a sign of camaraderie. But Ron just shook his head looking down shamefully.
“You are right, Harry. I have been horrible. I rejected her when she needed me the most, all because of how the situation made me feel. I am so selfish. How could anyone forgive my actions?” he asked his friend honestly.
Harry brought his hand down to his friend’s shoulder. “Well you’re lucky that we all know you are selfish Ron.” He teased lightly.
“We just miss you, say you’re sorry and let’s all be a family again. Come to dinner on Sunday. Everyone will be there and it will be the perfect time to come home.” Harry offered.
“Hermione will never forgive me. I said horrible things to her…” Ron trailed off dejectedly.
“Ron give her a chance to decide for herself. Give them all a chance.” He said and Ron just nodded his acceptance.
“Okay, I will come.” He acquiesced to his friend’s request. Harry pulled Ron into a hug and clapped his back.
“Now let’s get this place cleaned up.” He said looking around at the months of filth that had built up. He immediately seized the half full bottles of liquor and headed for the sink.
“You don’t need these anymore, right mate?” Harry questioned his friend pointedly gesturing at the bottles in his hands.
Ron just waved his hand dismissively “Go ahead and toss ‘em and while you’re at it tell me about everything that I have missed.”
The two wizards caught up and cleaned. By the time the sun was shining in the windows, it was as if no time had elapsed between the two young men.
<><>{Chapter Four}<><>
The early morning hours found the Headmaster of Hogwarts in his private potion lab. He was just finishing up a large batch of the Pepper Up potion for the Hospital Wing when he found himself staring at the door that lead to his new apprentice’s quarters.
Severus had always held a begrudging respect for the young know-it-all. He had to admit the girl was remarkable, even if she and her friends spent six years of his life annoying the hell out of him.
Her two male counterparts were easily dismissed as dim, but she was anything but and he found it infuriating that he couldn’t dismiss the young witch.
He knew it was her that stole from his stores throughout the years and he was able to guess what potions she was brewing by what went missing and in what quantities.
Although most of the missing ingredients were hard to procure, he had to give the girl credit for her tenacity; not many attempted to brew potions as difficult as the Polyjuice Potion at the age of 13.
After seeing her yesterday it was hard to believe that was the same person. Hermione Granger, the student, had always been just that, a student, an annoying, overly chatty, know it all, just like all the others. But Hermione Granger the apprentice was far from a girl anymore.
Her body had defiantly taken to motherhood well. He had a hard time not noticing her newly rounded hips and chest as she unknowingly put her assets on display for him. He was a man after all.
The potion turned the desired shade of orange; he waved his wand and the potion magically appeared into the waiting vials all neatly labeled in his spidery handwriting. After casting a quick Scourgify on the cauldron, he began to box the vials when his apprentice entered the room through her door.
He observed her out of his peripheral vision carrying her son in one arm and massaging her temple with her free hand. She was in a pair of hip hugging pajama shorts and a spaghetti strap shirt with a short, cotton robe casually thrown over and hanging open. Not wanting to scare the poor girl he decided to make his presence known.
“Miss… Hermione” he corrected, still not use to the new level of familiarity. He watched as she gasped and quickly pulled her robe more securely around her torso.
“Bullocks!” she cried and then blushed for using such profanity around her superior. “Professor… I mean Severus,” She amended. “sorry, you startled me. I wasn’t expecting you… I mean, I just need a Hangover Relief draught. I thought I could sneak in and…” she gestured to the storeroom when he interrupted her looking up.
“First, I told you before you don’t need to sneak anywhere in this lab, second I would like to point out that you are not properly attired to brew anything,” he gestured to her robe which was pulling forward again thanks to her son’s grasp. “And you really should plan ahead next time and brew the draught before you indulge.” He chided her softly which only caused her to scowl at him. He watched as her cheeks and neck began to flush.
Severus always did love to taunt her, mainly because she was so responsive to his advances. He watched as the blush reached the V of her robe and spread across her chest. Her reactions now were alarmingly more interesting he decided, thinking he would have to be careful to maintain boundaries; for both their sakes. Keeping her in his peripheral he returned to his previous task.
Even if he did decided to pursue her, he knew this young woman was damaged, and would need a decidedly more delicate hand to introduce her into the world of consensual adult relationships; Severus Snape was not that man, no matter how attractive he was beginning to find her.
Also they both had reputations to maintain. It simply didn’t make sense for him to engage her in any type of carnal relationship. ‘Yes keep telling yourself that.’ He said as she pulled her robe closed again and shifted her sons weight onto the other hip.
“Go back to your quarters. I will bring you the the potion when it’s done.” He commanded not looking up from his task of boxing. He covertly watched her stand there for a second trying to decide if she should protest. Ultimately she conceded to his request and with a sigh she left the laboratory and returned to her residence, muttering a quick thank-you.
Once he had finished the potion, went over to her door and knocked. He waited a minute then promptly knocked again. He hated to be kept waiting. After the third knock went unanswered he pulled the door open and walked right into Hermione.
The force from his body caused her to fall back. If not for quick reaction’s on his part she would have fallen to the ground. As it were, he managed to wrap his arms around her waist and steady her. He could feel every one of her curves as he pressed her scantily clad form close to him. When she regained her footing he begrudgingly released his hold on her.
“Do you make a habit of leaving your guests waiting for such long periods of time?” He inquired noticing she had her robe tied closed now.
“Do you make a habit out of bursting into young women’s quarters unannounced?” She countered with her hands on her hips.
He merely raised an eyebrow at her, noticing that the curtains were all still drawn and that there were two shot glasses on the coffee table.
He produced the medicine from his inside his robe pocket and handed it to her. “I hope you didn’t embarrass yourself last night…” he commented as he watched her knock back the vial.
“Hardly, it was just Harry and I.” she dismissed easily and they were interrupted by a whistling sound coming from the kitchenette. “That would be the tea!” she exclaimed rushing over to remove the heating spell she put on the pot.
“Would you like a cup,” she asked then quickly added “Severus?” Maybe it was the way she said his name, or the fact that her robe went past her shorts making it appear she was less dressed than she was, but he found himself accepting before he realized what was going on.
‘What happened to boundaries old man?’ he thought to himself as he took a seat at the table where her son was seated in his highchair. The two men sized each other up. The younger wizard was carefully studying the older one’s facial features and expression, taking an extreme interest in Severus’ long dark hair that was just reaching his shoulders. The young boy was trying to decide if he wanted Severus' attention.
Hermione unknowingly interrupted the silent interrogation by arriving with the tea tray and a plate of what looked to be mashed up bananas in a bowl. Severus noted that she had three tea cups on the tray. ‘Surely the third was not for the toddler.’ He thought to himself inwardly smiling at the idea of a baby enjoying a nice cuppa.
Severus watch as her son smiled and clapped his hands at the sight of the banana concoction until it was placed in front of him. To Severus’ disgust, Benny proceeded to shove his pudgy little hand into the mess and push it up into his face getting more of it on his cheek rather than in his mouth.
Severus looked over expecting the young mother to share his disgust but she was happily preparing her tea with a twist of lemon and a spoon full of honey.
“Miss… Hermione, look at your son!” he cried when the young boy put his goo covered hand on top of his head, getting banana goo in his curls.
She looked over at him and smiled. “Yes he has gotten to be so big.” She mused not even noticing the mess.
“No, he is covered in that, goo! Are you planning on stopping him?” He questioned as the boy again tried to insert his hand in his mouth but instead hitting most of his other cheek.
“Severus, he is a baby, they make messes.” She stated simply. “We only have to worry if,” but she was distracted by a flying glob of goo headed straight for Severus and she watched, in horror, as it landed in his hair. “he starts throwing it.” She finished quickly grabbing a napkin and rushing to his side.
She tried to hide her mirth at the disgusted look on his face but the situation was too comical to ignore and she succumbed to the giggles.
“I’m glad you find this situation funny,” he said while holding the goo afflicted locks away from the rest of his hair. “maybe next time you will heed my warnings.” He chided her as she helped remove the goo from his hair.
As she stood hovering over his person, Severus was presented with her chest at eye level. She was so concerned with extracting the goo that she did not notice him hungrily looking down her shirt but someone else did. Another glob of goo flew over and landed on table near Severus, causing him to glare over at the young wizard.
“I think your son protests to the attention I am getting.” He remarked indicating the pouting boy. She just looked over at her son and smiled.
“He is used to getting all of the attention, I’m afraid the Weasleys may have spoiled him.” she admitted telling her son no, very firmly and casting a quick Fianto Duri charm to block them from anymore projectile goo blobs.
Suddenly their tea was cut short by a knock at the door. “Shite!” she called putting her tea cup down and running into her bedroom. In her haste she closed the door softly, but without the needed force, it bounced back open slightly.
Severus watched transfixed as she stood with her back to him and began peeling off her pajamas. He couldn’t help but notice the beautiful curve of her back or the way her, now full, breasts were slightly visible from the side when she raised her arms. This was defiantly not helping him maintain boundaries.
She replaced the pajamas with a lacy white bra, long sleeve t-shirt and a pair of jeans and came running back into the room towards the door, which by this time had been knocked on three times.
Severus watched as she threw the door open and apologizing to what appeared to be an empty door way.
As Hermione and her new guest entered the room Severus recognized him at once. He was none other than his colleague Filius Flitwick.
“We are in the kitchen.” She stated.
“We?” Severus heard his colleague question.
“Yes, Severus and I were just enjoying a pot of tea while Benny, my son, had some breakfast.” She replied easily coming into the kitchen.
“Filius, won’t you join us? We can work out our schedules together since we are all here now.” She stated looking to Severus for confirmation to which he nodded.
Filius only asked to meet with their apprentice once a day to review questions and findings. They arranged a time after lunch during Filius’ off period and Severus and Hermione would meet in the mornings after breakfast in the great hall was finished. They both made their floos’ available to the witch if any questions or guidance was needed throughout the day. Severus also planned to make himself available in their lab from eight until ten in the evening. She told both men she wished to have Saturdays and Sundays off to spend with her family.
Once all of the important topics had been covered Severus felt the conversation start to shift to the frivolous side; he quickly excused himself from the merry group bidding the adults goodbye and nodding curtly at the young toddler.
He was beginning to think this woman was going to be trouble. His mind instantly replayed the strip tease she had unknowingly preformed minutes earlier and felt the blood rush towards his groin.
Yes, big trouble indeed he decided as he entered his office.
<><>{End of Chapter Four}<><>
A/N: okay I know what some of yall are thinking… “Wait, I thought this is a Hermione/Lucius Fic?!?” well it is. Severus is just a rebound! Think of him as an appetizer. Lucius is and always has been my main course for Hermione on this fic! Lol Sorry I waited so long between updates! My friend just had her baby and I was off visiting her! I made the chapter a little longer this time to say sorry!
My first draft of the chapter had a little smut, but after re-reading it I thought it felt way too rushed so I re-wrote the chapter to develop the characters and the tension a little more! Sexual tension makes everything better! Lol!
