-Chapter Three-
Leaning against his car, Nick watched as Monroe drove up in his own car and climbed out, standing stiffly and sniffing at the air while watching him.
“Calm down, Eddie. You know we can't do this right now.” Nick said, holding the small backpack in front of his chest as if it could protect him from the aroused Blutbad.
Growling, Monroe said, “Is that the missing kid's?”
“Yeah.”
“Good give it here.” He said holding out his hand while he shifted. His ears became pointed, hair sprouted over his chin and up the sides of his face and seemed to become slightly wilder and wrinkles seemed to become more pronounced on his face.
Pulling out the first thing his hand encountered, a pair of tattered pants, Monroe sniffed at it, trying to memorize and get a good idea of the scent.
After a few seconds, he lifted his head towards the sky and took the same deep breaths until he turned and started running into the woods.
Cursing, Nick stumbled as he instantly started to run after the Blutbad, dodging fallen branches or tall patches of grass since Monroe just started running, ignoring the trails.
At the pace they were running at, it didn't take long before Monroe was stopping at a fallen tree.
“He was here. He spent some time here before he moved on.” Continuing on, it was only a few seconds before Monroe stopped and said, “He caught himself on something. He started bleeding and there's another scent here, but I can't tell what it is. It smells like...gingerbread that isn't good.”
“Gingerbread? And why isn't that good?”
“Gingerbread is often the scent that witches give off when they're on the hunt and to mark their 'prey'.”
“Prey?”
“They kill and consume children usually between the ages of five and ten years old.”
“How soon after taking them do they kill them?” Nick asked, his eyes slightly widening.
“It depends on the size of the child. They like them slightly plump, but not overweight where it will be all fat they're eating.”
“So we still have a good chance of finding him alive because Harry is skinny and small. She'd have to over feed him for a while before he started getting bigger.” Nick said, remembering the picture that had been in the file.
“Do you really want to assume that? You know what they say about assuming.”
“I know. Now can you follow the trail still or has it gone cold?”
Lifting his nose to the air, Monroe inhaled deeply then started walking again, motioning for Nick to follow him.
Twenty minutes later, they walked into a small clearing where a crooked house sat with smoke rising from the chimney. There were no lights in any of the windows and, if it weren't for the smoke, it would have seemed abandoned.
“Here. He was brought here.” Monroe said.
Approaching the house cautiously, Nick pulled his gun from the holster and held it at his side before banging on the door and shouting, “Police open the door!” He waited a few seconds and when there wasn't an answer banged on the door again with a , “This is the police, if there's anyone home I need you to open the door now!”
“Doesn't look like anyone is home.” Monroe said before reaching out and turning the doorknob and pushed the door open. “Not too worried about security I guess.”
Shaking his head with a soft chuckle, Nick followed Monroe inside, looking around. The inside of the house looked as if it hadn't been lived in for years; everything was coated in layers of dust. Just like outside, however, the steam and boiling pots of water on the stove gave away the fact that someone did live there.
“Do you smell him here anywhere?” Nick asked, pushing a rotten apple that had fallen to the floor away from him.
Inhaling deeply, Monroe moved over to a wall that looked fairly new and said, “The scent is strongest here.”
“Pretty new wall, scent ending at the wall...I'd say that's a fake wall.” Nick said with a shrug.
Reaching for a small hatchet which had been leaning against the fireplace near the split wood, Monroe pulled his arm back, ready to strike when a screech from the front door startled them and a heavy weight landed on his back.
“You can't have him, wolf. That child is mine. I chose him first!” The old, ragged looking woman screamed, trying to rake at his eyes with her claw like fingernails.
Snarling, Monroe grabbed her by her long, gray hair and threw her to the ground then pounced on her and wrapped his clawed fingers around her neck. He had barely began to squeeze, before her claws slashed down his face, leaving bloody gashes from just below his eyes to his chin.
Jumping away from her, Monroe scrubbed at his face, trying to alleviate the pain.
Raising his gun, Nick warned her to stop as she grabbed a long knife and started towards the distracted Blutbad. When she didn't stop, he pulled the trigger and shot her twice; once in the forehead and once in the heart.
As she fell to the ground with a thud, muffled screams came from behind the wall that looked new.
Looking at one another, Monroe picked up the hatchet he had dropped when the witch attacked him, reared back, and hacked away at the wall until he was able to use his strength to yank the wall down. Behind the wall sat a cage with a huddled figure inside of it and rotten and old food sitting in and outside of the cage.
Holstering his gun, Nick rushed forwards and crouched in front of the cage.
“Harry my name is Nick and I'm a police officer. This is my friend Eddie. We're gonna get you out of there okay?” Nick asked, placing his hand on the cage.
Peering at him with his piercing green eyes, Harry nodded and said, “Please let me out. I was a good boy I swear.”
Grabbing the key, which had been left hanging on a nail in front of the cage, Nick unlocked the door to the cage and opened it up.
“Come on, bud.” Nick said, holding out his hands.
Hesitating slightly, Harry crawled out of the cage and into Nick's arms, allowing himself to be held and carried away from the cage.
As they turned around, Nick turned Harry's head into his shoulder and said, “Don't look around until we get outside okay?”
Nodding, Harry kept his head in Nick's shoulder until he felt the slight breeze from outside hit his cheek.
Walking back through the woods with Harry in his arms, Nick shifted him slightly when the child fell asleep on his shoulder.
Getting back to their cars, Nick settled Harry into the back of his car then took a few minutes to thank Monroe, by pinning him against his car and kissing him.
“I'll see you at home later and I'll thank you again for helping.” Nick said with a wicked grin.
“I look forward to it.” Monroe called after him as Nick made his way over to his car and climbed into the driver seat.
As he drove away, heading back to the station, Nick couldn't help looking into the mirror constantly, keeping an eye on Harry.
